mind over body 3 out of 5 stars.

Joan Chittister, a Benedictine nun, has written over twenty-five books that map the terrain of the Christian life, with special attention paid to issues of feminism, international justice, the monastics, and reform in the Catholic Church. I've especially enjoyed Scarred By Struggle, Transformed By Hope (2003) based upon the Jacob narrative, Listen with the Heart (2003), and Called to Question (2004). In The Gift of Years she writes for a broader audience that is not necessarily Christian or even religious.

Now that she has passed her seventieth birthday, Chittister explores what it means to grow older gracefully. To do this she has written short (3-5 pages each) meditations on forty themes like regret, ageism, adjustment, letting go, sadness, solitude, success, etc. She begins each chapter with a pithy aphorism from a broad range of poets and prophets, both ancient and modern -- Plato and Picasso, Browning and Byron, Emily Dickinson and Jung. After the brief meditation, she summarizes the chapter by observing both the "burden" and the "blessing" of the theme under consideration. On the idea of the future, for example, she writes, "The burden of these years is to assume that the future is already over. A blessing of these years is to give another whole meaning to what it is to be alive, to be ourselves, to be full of life. Our own life."

Which is to say that much of my future of growing older is what I intentionally choose to make it. We all face the inexorable biology of the body and the deterioration of our physical condition. But we also enjoy the possibilities of the "eternity of the spirit" and the frame of mind we choose to follow. One can choose to age passively or actively, says Chittister. That is wisdom worth pondering, especially when you consider that the average retirement age is about sixty-four, which means the average American also has another twenty years to live and to love. Having worked long and hard to make a living, Chittister advises that our older years offer us the chance to make a life.

Editorial Review:

Not only accepting but celebrating getting old, this inspirational and illuminating work looks at the many facets of the aging process, from purposes and challenges to struggles and surprises. Central throughout is a call to cherish the blessing of aging as a natural part of life that is active, productive, and deeply rewarding. Perhaps the most important dimension revealed lies in the awareness that there is a purpose to aging and intention built into every stage of life. Chittister reflects on many key issues, including the temptation towards isolation, the need to stay involved, the importance of health and well-being, what happens when old relationships end or shift, the fear of tomorrow, and the mystery of forever. Readers are encouraged to surmount their fears of getting older and find beauty in aging well.

Saving and Savoring the world-what a concept! 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Most of us have bookshelves weighed down with all kinds of personal development and self help books-I do!
Most of the ones for midlife tend to be around health and wealth issues....will we have enough of both? Often the answers are scarcity driven, not giving us much hope for a positive aging experience.
This is the very best one I've read that gives us the GPS or road map to midlife and beyond. What a great job Richard and David have done to provide the readers with practical principles AND lots of inspiring stories of others who are living the good life in their second half of life. Millions of us are embarking on this journey -much of it unknown territory. Until now.
Richard and David show us the way to find and use our unique gifts and talents so this second half of life becomes a rich and satisfying time of our lives.
Imagine living this time of your life, savoring and saving the world: living an authentic life of purpose and meaning, while creating a life of vitality and joy! If you are interested in creating this vision for yourself in the second half of your life then you must read this book. I have NEVER underlined and marked a book up this much before. I found that much wisdom woven through each page. Let's start the conversation of redefining "positive aging" in the second half of our lives.
Elizabeth Harrington, [...]

Editorial Review:

Drawing on ancient and contemporary wisdom, as well as modern research, Richard Leider and David Shapiro provide insightful ways of thinking and being that help us find meaning and purpose in the second half of life. This deeply reflective book uses a safari, (referencing a trip the authors took to Africa in 2006) as a metaphor to show how the second half of life can be a journey of discovery. In what may be their most personal book to date, Leider and Shapiro share dozens of moving stories, from both their own experiences and those of their safari companions, that offer sometimes surprising examples of lives well-lived, lives that exemplify the qualities of authenticity and wholeheartedness that they believe are essential to finding meaning and purpose in the second half of life. There are many pathways to putting our whole selves into life, especially during the second half, and in "Something to Live For," Leider and Shapiro explore many routes to vital aging.

I'm at that age where sometime in the foreseeable future, I'm going to have to deal with the passing of one or more parents in our family. In addition to the grieving process, there's something that often doesn't get discussed until it's too late... what do you do with all the "stuff" your parents have accumulated over their lifetime? Julie Hall has made a career of working through that process with people, and she's written a book called The Boomer Burden: Dealing with Your Parents' Lifetime Accumulation of Stuff. Even though it may not be a subject you want to think about, time spent reading The Boomer Burden now can lead to infinitely fewer headaches and fractured relationships when that time comes. And if you're the parent, reading and acting on the information here is one of the best gifts you can give to your children.

About the Author

Hall has a business called The Estate Lady, and she brings 17 years of experience to this often ignored (but inevitable) part of life. She documents in painful detail how normal families can turn into dishonest, contentious enemies over the process of clearing out and dividing up the contents of the parents' estate. It's also quite normal for "friends" to want to help out with the process, but those friends often help themselves to items when no one is looking. Add antique dealers and consignment agents on top of that, and valuable keepsakes can wander out the door for pennies on the dollar, often before you even know what happened. Hall has a process which helps you make difficult decisions beforehand (when emotions aren't running high), as well as steps to follow which makes the process of emptying the house something which doesn't have to be completely overwhelming. She also counsels parents to take the time beforehand to make a will, record where all the important papers are, and to list out any items of value and who they would want them to go to when they die. These simple acts can make all the difference in the world to the survivors who have to sort it all out.

It's tempting to think that your family will be one of the 20% (yes, it's that low) that smoothly handles this unfortunate event. Odds are, you won't be. While I'm not in the position of having Depression-era parents who saved EVERYTHING, there's still "stuff" that will have to be handled when that time comes for me. Based on the information in this book, I know I'll be in a much better position to do the right things than I would have been without it. I would recommend this book be standard reading material for anyone over the age of 35. Trust me, you'll need it at some point...

Editorial Review:

A practical guide to advise Baby Boomers how to deal with the daunting task of facing a parents' eventual passing as it relates to residential contents, heirlooms, and the often difficult family interactions and feuds that accompany them.

With fascinating stories and comprehensive checklists, professional estate liquidator Julie Hall walks Baby Boomers through the often painful challenge of dividing the wealth and property of their parents' lifetime accumulation of stuff. From preparation while the parent is still living through compassionately helping them empty the family home, The Estate Lady® gives invaluable tips on negotiating the inevitable disputes, avoiding exploitation from scam artists, and eventually closing the chapter of their lives in a way that preserves relationships and maximizes value of assets.

Very Rich In Resources 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Angeles Arrien is a cultural anthropologist who uses images, poetry, metaphor and other forms of symbolic language from world cultures in her work. I have enjoyed and learned from all her books: The Four-Fold Way: Walking the Paths of the Warrior, Teacher, Healer, and Visionary; Signs of Life: The Five Universal Shapes and How to Use Them; The Nine Muses: A Mythical Path to Creativity; and The Tarot Handbook. They have inspired my writing and the writing I do in community with others. Arrien is a consultant to many organizations and businesses, serves as president of the Foundation for Cross-Cultural Education and Research, and is a Fellow at the Institute of Noetic Sciences.

In her latest book, The Second Half of Life, Arrien invites readers to reconnect and resurrect their dreams that may have been derailed along the way. She describes the thresholds we must cross, in our middle years, in order to fulfil the final stages of our destiny. It is a real honouring of our elder years, which I very much appreciate in a culture that wants us to look and act as if we are not aging at all.

The book was elegantly designed by Bren Frisch and Karen Polaski for Sounds True. The hand images at the beginning of chapters and the foot images at the end of chapters are symbols of entering and leaving the eight gates. They also symbolize much more, including the purifying or marking of hands and feet before or after an initiation, as is done in many cultures of the world.

The eight gates, each with a chapter devoted to it, include "the task," "the challenge," and "the gift" followed by "reflections." As Arrien points out, "Reflection is one of numerous contemplative wisdom practices found in all world traditions." Journaling your insights is suggested as "an old reflective practice" and one that will help you notice "what is arising in the moment." "Practice" follows "reflections" as a way to build upon reflection by taking daily action that supports change. For instance, the Silver Gate (the first of the eight gates) compels you to look back at what you already know of yourself and to begin the "long journey back home to our true selves." The practice is to track the five stages of the soul--the call, the search, the struggle, the breakthrough and the return.

The task at the White Picket Fence is to "uncover or awaken to the essence of who we truly are beyond masks..." The Clay Gate (the third gate) is "our initiation into intimacy, sensuality, and sexuality." Arrien quotes a wide array of poets, writers and thinkers, including Eduardo Galeano who wrote, "The body says: I am a fiesta." When you think of your body in that way, it helps to embrace it more fully.

The Black and White Gate is a double gate of relationships and the only one you must go through in the company of at least one other person. Relationships (including those between mates and lovers, parents and children, teachers and students), according to the author, "teach us about our capacity for love, forgiveness, and respect for others."

At the Rustic Gate of weathered wood, readers are asked to explore meaningful work, service, and creativity. The challenge of this gate is to stay connected to the Four Rivers of Life and ask, "How will we use our generative energies?"

The sixth gate is the Bone Gate, which brings us to the "bones of who we are"--a metaphor for our authentic self. The Bone Gate urges a development of character, integrity, and wisdom. Again, Arrien passes on the wisdom of indigenous peoples who say "In order to return to our true nature, we must befriend four essential symbolic bones in our body"--the backbone, the wishbone, the funny bone and the hollow little bone. The hollow little bone allows "the Mystery to work us rather than trying to work the Mystery."

The seventh gate is the Natural Gate, where "we are encouraged to come home to our natural rhythm and our internal sanctuary." Many spiritual traditions recognize four natural sanctuaries as the desert, the mountains, the waters, and the woods. In the Practice section of the chapter, Arrien suggests spending an hour outdoors every day and spending at least a half hour every day in silence "to deeply listen to the center of your being."

The final gate in the initiatory process of the "second half of life" is the Gold Gate, the gate of "surrender, faith and acceptance." The challenge is to release critical judgments, accepting circumstances rather than resigning ourselves to them. Theologian Mary Reuter, to whom Arrien refers, "says that we can experience fearlessness through three layers of detachment: detachment from material gain; detachment from self-importance; and detachment from the urge to control or dominate others. To hold onto nothing is the root of happiness and peace." In the practice section of this chapter, Arrien suggests creating a Book of Revelations, including favorite memories, turning points, spiritual practices and important dreams. It sounds like a worthwhile way to assess what one truly values and to acknowledge longings that have not yet been satisfied.

The Second Half of Life is very rich in resources throughout the book and in the extensive bibliography. That doesn't mean it's at all overwhelming. I found the book a very gentle way to initiate oneself into the fullness of our elder years. As wise elders who have honoured ourselves, we can pass along our lessons and unique gifts as a legacy to the generations that follow us.

Turning point in my life 5 out of 5 stars.
33 of 35 people found this review helpful.

Reading Passages by Gail Sheehy was a turning point in my life. I especially remember "The most important words in midlife are--Let Go. Let it happen to you. Let it happen to your partner. Let the feelings. Let the changes." "You can't take everything with you when you leave on the midlife journey." "You are moving out of roles and into the self." in Part Six "Deadline Decade" Chapter 17 "Riding Out the Downside". Knowing this, I felt a great sense of relief knowing that the only person I could change is myself. From that point on I was quietly inspired to look for more information that I could read or hear (tapes) that would help me pull myself together. I treated my family more lovingly and I went back to college to finish my degree. Everyone would benefit from reading this inspiring classic. Thank you Gail Sheehy for your wonderful insight.

Editorial Review:

The Catch 30s -- illusions shaken, it's time to make, break, or deepen life commitments. The Forlorn 40s -- Dangerous years when the dreams of youth demand reassessment, men and women switch characteristics, sexual panic is common, but the greatest opportunity for self-discovery awaits. The Refreshed (or Resigned) 50s -- Best of life for those who let go old roles and find a renewal of purpose.
