Editorial Review:

The financial sectors in South Asia Region (SAR) are dominated by commercial banks, which account for the vast majority of the financial system's assets. The domestic debt markets including the government bond and corporate bond markets are at an early stage of development and there are few institutional investors. In recent years, countries in SAR have attempted to develop local debt markets, although the pace of development remains uneven and slow due to many regulatory and institutional impediments. With the notable exception of India, governments in SAR have yet to implement measures required for the proper development of the domestic bond markets. The book will provide a comprehensive overview of the major bond markets in SAR (Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) highlighting the areas which need further reforms. It is hoped that the book will contribute to our knowledge of bond markets in South Asian countries and create a broad based ownership of the recommendations made by the authors.

Editorial Review:

The frequency and virulence of recent financial crises have led to calls for reform of the current international financial architecture. In an effort to learn more about today's international financial environment, the authors turn to an earlier era of financial globalization between 1870 and 1913. By examining data on sovereign bonds issued by borrowing developing countries in this earlier period and in the present day, the authors are able to identify the characteristics of successful borrowers in the two periods. They are then able to show that global crises or contagion are a feature of the 1990s which was hardly known in the previous era of globalization. Finally, the authors draw lessons for today from archival data on mechanisms used by British investors in the 19th century to address sovereign defaults. Using new qualitative and quantitative data, the authors skillfully apply a variety of approaches in order to better understand how problems of volatility and debt crises are dealt with in international financial markets.

Superb at Building on Fundamentals 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Fabozzi succeeded writing a good book. In his preface, he shared his challenge of writing a book that CFA candidates could clearly understand. In his words, "this book has been the most difficult to write". It's clear he took the time to make sure readers would benefit from this material. I certainly came away with a better understanding of fixed income analysis.

The book has 15 chapters, divided into two parts. The first part is considered "Level I" material and covers:

1) Features of Debt Securities
2) Risks Associated with Investing in Bonds
3) Overview of Bond Sectors and Instruments
4) Understanding Yield Spreads
5) Valuing Debt Securities
6) Yield Measures, Spot Rates and Forward Rates
7) Measuring Interest Rate Risk

Chapter to chapter concepts seemed to fold together, unifying fundamentals of fixed income analysis and setting the stage very nicely for Level II studies. I wish I bought this book right from the start, but am glad I "backtracked" and read these initial chapters. They consistently provided much-needed detail that the Schweser books (great as they are) seemingly glossed over.

Part II jumps around a lot more than Part I. Despite this, this book examines the term structure of interest rates, valuing bonds with embedded options (think "prepayment"), mortgage-backed securities and their valuation, and also asset-backed securities, interest rate derivatives and basic credit analysis. In a nutshell, some very practical stuff. I'm in the mortgage sector and learned a lot about this area of fixed income analysis.

My only criticism is that the chapters on asset backed securities and credit analysis seemed to be a bit shallower compared to his other chapters.

The best part of this book is the chapter end questions and answers. They provide practical opportunities to apply concepts covered in the chapter material. I really enjoyed going through the exercises. The answers were really additional instruction, providing more insight to the subject matter.

A great book and a good read - I give it 4 1/2 stars.

Editorial Review:

This book gives an introduction to the bond markets for practitioners and new entrants who need to understand what they are, how they work and how they can be used, but do not want to be intimidated by mathematical formulae. By the end of the book readers will be able to decide whether to invest in the bond market. The mathematical formulae will be relegated to the appendices and supplemented by a companion website which allows users to enter their own bond market investments, to simulate anticipated events and see the results.
  • Patrick Brown is well-known as Chairman of the European Bond commission (recently retired)
  • The only bond book that does not rely heavily on mathematical formulae

Editorial Review:

Interest rate swaps - used globally by both corporate finance departments and investment firms to control interest payments, manage debt, and enhance investment portfolios - constitute a growing $1.9 trillion market. Now, financial personnel, swap traders, corporate treasurers, and professional cash managers can turn to this clear, authoritative guide to master all the methodologies used in the international swap market. Written for anyone whose work is touched by swap market activity, the guide uses diagramming techniques to first explain what swaps are, and how and why they are traded. It then addresses more sophisticated financial transactions, such as rate setting, analysis of swap desks, market-to-market, speculating, and financial statements. Readers will find detailed coverage of more than two dozen derivative products, including spreadlocks, swaptions, caps, and flows, and learn how swap trading works in foreign currencies and interest rates. Critical light is also shed on questions regulators are currently raising about the security and future of the swaps markets.

I'm not quite sure where else to send this, however... 1 out of 5 stars.

Please DO NOT post this e-mail. It is not a review- It is a request for assistance from Amazon.com... ------------------------------------------- To whom it may concern: I work for a financial firm and deal with both consumer loans as well as real estate loans (equity lending secured by a deed of trust). I am being given a chance to become involved in aquisitions of portfolios of loans from mortgage bankers (to be purchased, following a due diligence spread and review, by my company). I am currently intensively studying 'Fabozzi's' book, "Mortgages and Mortgage Backed Securities Markets" by Harvard Business School Press. This book is a bit above me--a little bit too much, in fact. My question is this: Can you send me information on books with related subjects, which might be a bit more elementary? I need to learn this field if I'm to effectively deal with experts in the field. I've thought of writing Fabozzi directly and asking for his advice. Perhaps, short of that, however, maybe you can help? Subjects: Mortgages and the secondary markets- Securitization- FNMA, FHLMC, GNMA (agency investors), private investors and conduits- Types and structures of securities and valuation of MBS's- **Process of Due Diligence in spreading and the valuation of both individual and packaged loans and/or securities collateralized by loans-** ANY books in the field that might assist me in moving in the right direction. I'm looking for books written in theory as well as realistic practical advice, preferably for a student rather then for the expert. Please keep this in mind as I'm very new to this field. I need simpler books with which to move up. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Ron Foltz R_S_Foltz@msn.com -If the books are those that I need, I will gladly purchase them from you.
