Great Book - not just for adults 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful book for anyone wanting to know more about investing their money and managing finances. I believe it is a wonderful gift for teenagers and college students as most of us do not learn these things in grade school. It's an easy read and can be used as a reference when the young adult starts making their own income and has questions on what to do with it.

Point of contention 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The book is a good reference and overview of the different asset classes available in Exchange Traded Funds. However, his opinion on commodities is difficult to justify. He calls it "As Asset Class with No Real Return." Really? Where has he been these past 5 years. Just because an asset class underperforms other asset classes in the past is not a guarentee of future (poor) returns. One needs to consider hedging against currency mismanagement and inflation. Also, the future may be different than the past now that India and China are demanding more commodities in an unprecendented way. I think the book is a good one to take out of the library, but probably would not purchase the book. It certainly provides much information on the menu of investments available via ETFs.

Editorial Review:

Written by veteran financial professional and experienced author Richard Ferri, The ETF Book gives you a broad and deep understanding of this important investment vehicle and provides you with the tools needed to successfully integrate exchange-traded funds into any portfolio. Each chapter of The ETF Book offers concise coverage of various issues and is filled with in-depth insights on different types of ETFs as well as practical advice on how to select and manage them.

Taking asset allocation to the next level 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Discover how to make your portfolio hit the sweet spot. This book takes your investing to the next level --- the winning level.

I got a lot of valuable information from this book. For one thing, it deals with the allocation of the fixed income portion of the portfolio --- something no other book that I'm aware of has done. And this is important.

There's really nothing that this book doesn't cover when it comes to asset allocation. It certainly helped me to get my own portfolio back in shape.

It talks about your real tolerance for risk --- not those that you get from tests. It says that most of us have less tolerance than we admit. I think that's true. We talk like we can handle a lot of risk when in truth, we can't. This is good to know.

Asset allocation is a critical part of investing. It doesn't matter if you're a small investor or a big one. You need help with asset allocation. And you can't depend on the pros to give you any help.

If you invest at all, you should read this book and keep it handy. You'll need it to guide you from time to time when you reallocate --- as you should and as you need to.

The book talks mostly in terms of index funds. But it can be used for any sort of investing. It's especially helpful, however, for those who invest in index funds, mutual funds and etf accounts.

The one thing the book seemed to lack was an explanation as to how exactly diversification spreads or, one should say, lessens the risk and how each allocation does so.

Editorial Review:

All About Asset Allocation goes beyond sound-bite financial columns and TV programs to explain asset allocation in terms that anyone can under- stand. Using a concise style, it features straight- forward explanations of asset allocation, a review of the asset allocation process, and guidelines for implementing strategies and programs.

ETF Strategies 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book is perfect for students of the ETF market.
The ETF is a close cousin of the mutual fund.
The acquisition would be helpful because there are
pitfalls inherent for ETF investments. Despite these issues,
the instrument is easy to trade, low cost and a
known quantity. Examples of classic ETF investments are:

o FXI-China large cap ETF
o OIH in the oil/energy sector
o GLD- gold ETF
o SLV- silver ETF
o GDX for mining ETFs
o USO for oil

The authors advise to buy ETFs where movement or
turning points are expected. The standard deviation
measures risk levels. An R squared of 85-100 is
considered a good statistic. A strength of the work
is that the author provides important statistical
yardsticks for comparison purposes.

The basic choices with an ETF are to buy, hold,
rebalance the portfolio and avoid market noise.
The buying decision is dispositive in profit
determination and little else according to the authors.
Consumers would benefit from a basic knowledge of
statistics in order to read this book and fully
understand the contents.

Editorial Review:

Invoking the words and spirit of Thomas Paine, investor-turned-historian John Bogle concedes that his ideas for revamping the mutual-fund industry are perhaps "not yet sufficiently fashionable to procure them general favor." But despite likening the "ills and injustices suffered by mutual fund investors" to those "our forebears suffered under English tyranny," Bogle--founder of the Vanguard Group--makes a strong case for index funds with this exhaustive study of investing.

He begins with primer-like essays on investment strategy, championing mutual funds for their inherent investment value, and then grinding each point home with a bevy of graphs, charts, entertaining anecdotes, and common sense. He repeatedly stresses time as a basic tenet for investing, listing these simple rules: "Time is your friend"; "Impulse is your enemy"; "Stay the course." And then he proceeds to blast fund managers, who have become marketers rather than managers.

The trade-off between the profits that accrue to fund shareholders and the profits that accrue to the fund management companies seems subject to no effective independent watchdog or balance wheel, despite the fact that the shareholders actually own the mutual funds.
It's an interesting concept: smart, reasoned investors can all but secure their financial future, but the system itself, run unchecked by fund managers, needs a major overhaul. And considering the amount of reasoned, historically based support he includes, readers will have a hard time finding fault with the sometimes controversial Bogle. Equal parts instructional and crusade, Common Sense on Mutual Funds deserves the attention it's likely to receive. Recommended. --Rob McDonald

Every Investor Should Read This Book 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Like every book by Nick Murray, this book is excellent. As a financial advisor, this is one book that I would certainly give to every one of my clients and recommend to anyone else, but not for the reasons given in the previous review.

Statistics show the the average mutual fund investor consistently underperforms the mutual funds that he or she owns. Why? Because they sell AFTER the fund has dropped 10% and buy back in AFTER the fund has risen 10%. After five years, the fund has delivered 10% average annual returns, yet the investor has achieved only 5-7% average annual returns (or worse). Murray correctly believes that the secret to long-term investment success lies in the investor's behavior, not in his ability to pick the best stocks or mutual funds. In this, and every other book by Nick Murray, he teaches investors how to fight their emotions and look beyond short-term performance to become better long-term investors. He preaches about the wisdom of dollar cost averaging and about buying stocks when they are "on sale."

Murray also supports his bias toward equities with a clear, concise explanation of the "real" risks that every investor faces. Every investor will get something out of this book.
