Editorial Review:

This book takes a very simple approach on investing and helps explain it in a story about two children. It is intended for children and teenagers aged 10 to 15, but also is a book that adults can use to easily understand concepts about investing. The basic premise of the book is that a child investing only $10 a month in mutual funds and adding more per month starting as a teenager can create wealth of about a million dollars over their lifetime, due to the length of time the money is invested. The book is intended as an educational source for both children and adults. Children and adults can learn that if they start investing early and regularly they can create significant wealth over their lifetimes. If children learn this lesson early they will develop good money habits and be investors throughout their lifetime. This book would be a great gift to a child to help them start to learn how to invest, which will be something that will stay with them for the rest of their lives and hopefully help them be financially independent.

The boy in the story is a child with an attitude. He loves ice cream, watching Star Trek and basketball, and watching his money grow. The story talks about why and how to invest in mutual funds, but also leaves the message that there are many more important things in life besides money.

I loved this book because it explores all mutual fund vehicles including sub-accounts of life insurance products. Many consumers will be introduced more to the insurance products in his next book "100% tax free investing"

Enlightening 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book! You can really tell that Mr. Dick Fabian's objective is to help out small investors to make money on the market. He outlines a specific trading strategy that will get you into the market when the trend is up, and out of the market when the trend is down.

About the 39WAR that the other people are complaining about, saying that it cannot be found anywhere on the web, and that it is a sales pitch. This is not true. 39WAR is the same as 200-day moving average, which are generally available on any charting software, as well as online charting sites like Yahoo Finance, Stockcharts, and Big Charts. How did I came into this conclusion? Easy: 39 Weeks = (39 x 5) days = 195 days - five days, since the market only trades during the weekdays.

I believe the 39WAR is a relic from the past, since during the earlier days, market data are most accessible via weekly reports on newspapers. Furthermore, most investors would not want to calculate 200-day averages by hand - it's just too tedious. But of course, with the advent of computers and the Internet, any decent spreadsheet can do this calculations for you.

Editorial Review:

"The Fabian trend-following plan is one of the simplest [and] most understandable, and is one that investors can actually live with." --The Hulbert Financial Digest Over the past two decades, even before the introduction of enhanced index funds, Dick Fabian has helped thousands of individuals average an astonishing 17 percent compounded growth. His mutual fund-based investment plan was ranked #1 nine times by the respected Hulbert Financial Digest. Now, in The Mutual Fund Wealth Builder, Fabian gives individual investors the tools to trade mutual funds with lowered risk and increased rates of return. This plain-spoken book shows investors how to: *Follow six investment steps to increase returns *Understand concepts including compounding and indexing *Perform--and act on--their own market analyses

Good discussion of Mutual Fund investing from the experts 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Morningstar is the recognized name in evaluating mutual funds. This book shares some of their insight. The advice is fairly straightforward and not earth-shaking: set your goals, pick an assett allocation in line with your goals and risk tolerance, diversify. From there they go into picking funds addressing such things as evaluating fund manager, looking at costs, judging past performance etc. I found the book helpful, but I am more philosophically aligned with the advice in Bogle's book (Common Sense on Mutual Funds : New Imperatives for the Intelligent Investor by John C. Bogle) that emphasizes index funds. I thinking chasing hot funds can almost be as bad as chasing hot stocks. Finally, the book deals strictly with mutual funds. Probably need a second reference to fully deal with you investment life (insurance, etc).

morningstar.com not this book 1 out of 5 stars.

I purchased the 3 books in this series hoping to find a way to bring the invaluable content of morningstar.com to my classroom [where our WiFi is spotty] in a book. The books are quite weak -- a light version of the information contained in the Learning Center / Morningstar University. Save your money; visit the morningstar.com website.

Editorial Review:

SOMEONE WILL MAKE MONEY ON YOUR FUNDS-WHY NOT YOU?

"This book is a treasure trove of practical research and pithy thoughts based on Gastineau's decades of experience; a valuable guide for the thoughtful investor."
—Harold Evensky, Chairman, Evensky, Brown & Katz

"Someone Will Make Money On Your Funds - Why Not You? will jar armchair mutual fund investors out of their PJ's. If you think checking out your funds in Morningstar and Lipper has you covered, you best read this book."
—Maureen Nevin Duffy, Editor/Publisher, The Turnaround Tactician

"This book is a must-read for fund investors. Gastineau carefully discusses many important factors such as taxes, capital gains overhang, trading costs, turnover, benchmark selection, active management, expense ratio, and aggressive trading by market timers. These factors significantly affect fund performance but may be ignored by investors. Gastineau goes on to build a strong case for choosing ETFs over mutual funds, especially for long-term investors. I strongly recommend this book for investors."
—Vijay Singal, J. Gray Ferguson Professor of Finance and Chairperson of the Finance Department, Pamplin College of Business of Virginia Tech, and author of Beyond the Random Walk: A Guide to Stock Market Anomalies and Low-Risk Investing

"Gastineau's message is very powerful. He not only challenges some conventional wisdom on investing, but truly emphasizes how to add value to a portfolio. What is unique is his ability to move quickly from the big picture to implementation strategies offering investment solutions to both investment advisors and individual investors. Portfolio adjustments discussed can potentially have significant impact on a long-term investor's standard of living."
—Dan Dolan, Director, Wealth Management Strategies, Select Sector SPDRs

Just took the test 4 out of 5 stars.
67 of 67 people found this review helpful.

I have little financial background and needed to pass the test in about a month. Here is what I did with this book, the only book I have ever used.

1) read the book one time. Do all the chapter tests. Understand them as best you can. Read all of the material once.
I suggest 30-50 pages a night depending on what subject. Unfortunately the first few sections are a grind (Munis and Options are included) and take longer - make sure to read these to understanding.

Pay attentin to all "test topic" alerts in the book.

2) Buy the CD and take tests. Lots of tests. Lots and lots of tests. Take full section tests ( I took them in increments of 50 and 100) until you are getting 80% of them correct.

At the end of each section of the book - take multiple tests on that section on the CD immediately afterwards. AS you read more and more sections - combine more and more subjects into the tests you take along with taking some that are subject specific.

Take tests that include all of the subjects too - then find what sections and sub-sections you are scoring poorly on and take tests upon test of just those subjects until you know them.

The CD is a must. You HAVE to have it. I probably took 150 tests ranging from full 125 all subject practice tests (that are JUST like the real thing as far as form and questions) to 50 question tests focusing on subjects I was scoring poorly on.

1) study the book and do the tests in the book
2) get the CD and go to town like a madman. Take tests until you cant take any more tests. You cannot take too many.

I got 87 first try and finished the first 3 hour session in 50 minutes and the second 3 hour section in 1 hour and 15 minutes. Took under 2 hours total. About 30% of the questions were EXACT - the others similiar.

My only complaint is that the section on Order Entry/Confirmation/and Settlement sections. I was in the 60% range on the test for that section and was LOST during the test on q's regarding those subjects.

You can pass the test with a month, this book and the dearborn CD.

good luck

Pozen's 2nd edition (blue cover) is best mutual fund book 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

The great thing about Pozen's book is that it clarifies a lot of difficult subjects in the mutual fund area. The book is comprehensive but it is especially good on thoroughly demystifying:
(1) The different channels of distribution of mutual funds (direct, captured brokerage, independent brokerage, investment advisors, 401-k, etc.)
(2) The different service providers for each mutual fund (investment advisor, transfer agent, underwriter, distributors, accountant, etc.)
(3) The different types of mutual funds (investment styles, classes A, B, C, R, I,etc., fee structures -- 12b-1, fund end, back end, etc.)
(4) The structure and operation of mutual fund complexes
(5) The structure of the whole industry (incentives of different players, valuation of mutual fund complexes, etc.)
(6) Regulation and taxation.

These subjects are opaque to even long term observers of the mutual fund industry. But Pozen is uniquely positioned to write a clarifying book like this because he is a Phd in Economics, a career finance industry lawyer and the ex-head of Fidelity.

Pozen's book is the best so far on mutual funds. Its only close rival is Lee Gremillion's excellent book 'A Purely American Invention', but read Pozen's book first. Pozen's writing is clear, thought provoking and covers all facets of mutual funds as products and as an industry.

I am a Finance Professor at Dartmouth College and I teach and research mutual funds. I unreservedly commend this second edition of Pozen's book to anyone who wants a deep understanding of the mutual fund industry.

Editorial Review:

Pozen, a leading industry expert, offers a structured presentation of mutual funds for upper-level undergraduates and MBA students. The Mutual Fund Business, 2/e, covers the key principles of mutual fund investment theory through straightforward writing supported by selected articles and case studies. This text provides a comprehensive, firsthand look at the investment strategies supporting a $4 trillion industry undergoing significant growth in the U.S.
