FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE BUSINESSWEEK, USA TODAY, AND WALL STREET JOURNAL BUSINESS BESTSELLER HOW TO MAKE MONEY IN STOCKS!

Simple-to-follow strategies for making--and keeping--profits in today's perilous stock market

More than 80 million investors lost 50 to 80 percent of their savings in the recent stock market crash. Investor's Business Daily publisher William J. O'Neil, however, was one of the first to see--and warn investors about--the dangers inherent in what had been, up to that point, a historic bull market run. Those who followed his counsel were able to sidestep devastating losses and emerge with their sizable bull market profits largely intact.

In The Successful Investor, O'Neil steps up to tell all investors how they can make money and, more important, avoid losses in up markets, down markets, and everything in between. Showing how mistakes made in the recent market collapse were amazingly similar to those made in previous down cycles, O'Neil reveals simple steps investors can follow to avoid costly mistakes and:

  • Buy only the best stocks at only the best times
  • Follow a market-tested 3-to-1 Profit-and-Loss Percentage Plan
  • Know when to sell for the biggest possible profit
  • Recognize chart patterns that presage enormous market moves
  • Manage a portfolio over time to maximize its returns

William O'Neil has succeeded in virtually every market environment by following a stable, nonemotional investment plan. In his latest book, O'Neil explains how anyone can follow that plan to become a profitable long-term investor, regardless of market tides or turns.

The Successful Investor will bring reason and welcome relief to all investors buffeted and bewildered by the perils and uncertainty of today's stock market.

Editorial Review:

"Once I picked it up I did not put it down until I finished. . . . What Schwed has done is capture fully-in deceptively clean language-the lunacy at the heart of the investment business."
-- From the Foreword by Michael Lewis, Bestselling author of Liar's Poker

". . . one of the funniest books ever written about Wall Street."
-- Jane Bryant Quinn, The Washington Post

"How great to have a reissue of a hilarious classic that proves the more things change the more they stay the same. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent."
-- Michael Bloomberg

"It's amazing how well Schwed's book is holding up after fifty-five years. About the only thing that's changed on Wall Street is that computers have replaced pencils and graph paper. Otherwise, the basics are the same. The investor's need to believe somebody is matched by the financial advisor's need to make a nice living. If one of them has to be disappointed, it's bound to be the former."
-- John Rothchild, Author, A Fool and His Money, Financial Columnist, Time magazine

Humorous and entertaining, this book exposes the folly and hypocrisy of Wall Street. The title refers to a story about a visitor to New York who admired the yachts of the bankers and brokers. Naively, he asked where all the customers' yachts were? Of course, none of the customers could afford yachts, even though they dutifully followed the advice of their bankers and brokers. Full of wise contrarian advice and offering a true look at the world of investing, in which brokers get rich while their customers go broke, this book continues to open the eyes of investors to the reality of Wall Street.

nice overview of a wide range of topics 5 out of 5 stars.

i give 4.5 stars.

many reviewers comment that this book lacks depth, but hey, it just tries to give a general overview on a variety of fixed income securities, that's what it is, and this book does reasonably well on this purpose. it never means to contain everything on every fixed income securities.

the only thing i am concerned is that the page numbers listed on the index sometimes do not match.

Editorial Review:

John Maynard Keynes was the world-changing English economist whose theories dragged the Western world from the doldrums of the Great Depression. A many-sided figure – in addition to his contributions to economics he was a best-selling author, a Baron in the House of Lords, and a key member of Virginia Woolf’s celebrated Bloomsbury Group – Keynes was also one of the few men to master the financial markets in practice as well as in theory. Over the course of his investment career Keynes’ net worth swelled to the present-day equivalent of $30 million and the college endowment fund under his management vastly outperformed the broader market.

In KEYNES AND THE MARKET, Justyn Walsh examines the secrets behind Keynes’ incredible stock market success.

A determined foe of conventional wisdom in all spheres of his life, Keynes’ unorthodox approach anticipated the investment philosophies of some of the world’s most successful investors, including the legendary Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway. Keynes’ six key investment principles, developed in the wake of one of the greatest financial crises in history, represent a straightforward and time-tested system for exploiting the periodic irrationality of financial markets.

Amid the current market turmoil and wild swings in investor sentiment, Keynes’ observations on stock market behavior are more relevant than ever. KEYNES AND THE MARKET explores what the modern masters of the market have absorbed from Keynes, and reveals how the everyday investor can profit from the stock market techniques of one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century.

Recommended for professional certification by the Market Technician's Association, this is the Original - and Still Number One - Technical Analysis Answer Book. "Technical Analysis Explained, 4th Edition", is today's best resource for making smarter, more informed investment decisions. This straight-talking guidebook details how individual investors can forecast price movements with the same accuracy as Wall Street's most highly paid professionals, and provides all the information you will need to both understand and implement the time-honored, profit-driven tools of technical analysis.Completely revised and updated for the technologies and trading styles of 21st century markets, it features: technical indicators to predict and profit from regularly occurring market turning points; psychological strategies for intuitively knowing where investors will seek profits - and arriving there first!; and, methods to increase your forecasting accuracy, using today's most advanced trading techniques.Critical acclaim for previous editions include: "One of the best books on technical analysis to come out since Edwards and Magee's classic text in 1948...Belongs on the shelf of every serious trader and technical analyst. " - "Futures". "..."Technical Analysis Explained" [is] widely regarded as the standard work for this generation of chartists." - "Forbes".Traders and investors are creatures of habit who react - and often overreact - in predictable ways to rising or falling stock prices, breaking business news, and cyclical financial reports. Technical analysis is the art of observing how investors have regularly responded to events in the past and using that knowledge to accurately forecast how they will respond in the future. Traders can then take advantage of that knowledge to buy when prices are near their bottoms and sell when prices are close to their highs. Since its original publication in 1980, and through two updated editions, Martin Pring's "Technical Analysis Explained" has showed tens of thousands of investors, including many professionals, how to increase their trading and investing profits by understanding, interpreting, and forecasting movements in markets and individual stocks.Incorporating up-to-the-minute trading tools and technologies with the book's long-successful techniques and strategies, this comprehensively revised fourth edition provides new chapters on: candlesticks and one- and two-bar price reversals, especially valuable for intraday and swing traders; expanded material on momentum - including brand new interpretive techniques from the Directional Movement System and Chaunde Momentum Oscillator to the Relative Momentum Index and the Parabolic; expanded material on volume, with greater emphasis on volume momentum along with new indicators such as the Demand Index and Chaikin Money Flow; relative strength, an increasingly important and until now underappreciated arm of technical analysis; application of technical analysis to contrary opinion theory, expanding the book's coverage of the psychological aspects of trading and investing. Technical analysis is a tool, nothing more, yet few tools carry its potential for dramatically increasing a user's trading success and long-term wealth. Let Martin Pring's landmark "Technical Analysis Explained" provide you with a step-by-step program for incorporating technical analysis into your overall trading strategy and increasing your predictive accuracy and potential profit with every trade you make.

Its alright 3 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

When I bought this book, I was expecting really in-depth analysis of various Greeks and their effects on basic option positions as well as complex spreads. However, I was bit disappointed.

If you have read any decent preliminary option trading books (Natenberg, McMillan et al) or if you have been trading option spreads for say 1+ year, this book would be useless. In aggregate there would be about 10-12 page material which may useful for such people. Last chapter on relationships between implied and realized volatility is OK.

For some reason the author has morbid fear for graphs of positions and greeks. He ends up giving tables after tables to illustrate effect of various greeks on option position.

If you are at a stage where you think I buy call option when I am bullish and I buy put option when I am bearish, this book will help you understand the effects of other equally important variables in pricing and trading, but then there are so many other which give this information in a better fashion in my opinion.

Editorial Review:

Veteran options trader Dan Passarelli explains a new methodology for option trading and valuation based on the "greeks"--the five factors that influence an option's price. Using the greeks can lead to more accurate pricing information that will lead to trading opportunities. The "greeks" (Delta, Gamma, Theta, Vega, Rho) are tools for measuring minute changes in an option's price based on corresponding changes in: interest rates, time to expiration, price changes in the underlying security, volatility, and dividends. In straightforward language and making use of charts and examples, Passarelli explains how to use the greeks to be a better options trader. With an introduction to option basics as well as chapters on all types of spreads, put-call parity and synthetic options, trading volatility and studying volatility charts, and advanced option trading, "Trading Option Greeks" holds pertinent new information on how more accurate pricing can drive profit.

Shorting is a Art form as well as technical 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I learned of Gill Morales though Gary Kaultbaum's radio show and then Subscribed to the Gilmo Report as a result, A lot of this book is his writing and is well done. I have been trading now for over 20 years and you never stop learning. Shorting stocks is a stressfull endevor for me and the more I can learn proper entry the better. The book goes though how to spot tops in stocks and speaks of general market direction as well. There are lots of charts that should help you to get the basic theme of how to spot these stocks. You should have a good foundation in Technical Analysis and back that up with company fundementals. You can make much more money going short if you know how to do it correctly. Traders want out of the Pool a lot faster than they want to get in. This can result in 15 to 20 percent gains in several days.

Editorial Review:

There are two sides to everything, except the stock market. In the stock market there is only one side--the right side. In certain market conditions, selling short can put you on the right side, but it takes real knowledge and market know-how as well as a lot of courage to assume a short position.

The mechanics of short selling are relatively simple, yet virtually no one, including most professionals, knows how to sell short correctly. In How to Make Money Selling Stocks Short, William J. O'Neil offers you the information needed to pursue an effective short selling strategy, and shows you--with detailed, annotated charts--how to make the moves that will ultimately take you in the right direction.

From learning how to set price limits to timing your short sales, the simple and timeless advice found within these pages will keep you focused on the task at hand and let you trade with the utmost confidence.

Well I took the Financial Markets course at my university, both of my professors are very good at conveying information. Then when I read this textbook, man all the things in my head were messed up. This textbook is kind of Reviews of Money, Banking and FN Markets. It never really add more information to your brain if you have already taken couple of FN courses. I do recommend Financial Markets and Institutions by Jeff Madura or Money, Banking and Financial Markets by Stephen Cecchetti. Those guys are easier to read and follow.

Fast service. excellent condition 5 out of 5 stars.

great book for finance/money 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a student in Romania and I always feel uncomfortable about spending the 20 dolars needed to pay for some of the coursebooks that our teachers recommend. I always feel that i'm probably going to toss any coursebooks in the attick once i'm done with it. But after reading a few excerpts from Mishkin's book, I felt like spending six times the amount would be a worthwhile investment. And I have not regretted it since! It is an excellent book for anyone looking to learn more about modern financial systems and finance in general. The fact that makes it such a great book is that mishkin actually wants you to understand what he's taling about by using an accessible vocabulary and lots of examples.
