I wasn't too impressed with this text. I found that many of the chapters were incredibly verbose, and seemed to confuse me even more in some instances. Perhaps one of the problems (obviously not Brigham's fault) was that my prof "wizzed" through some of these chapters, so reading the "wordy, never-ending" chapters was overwhelming. Further, I think that some concepts could have been more simplified, when instead Brigham seemed to ramble and "lost" me.

In short, I think some "academics" (profs, grad students, etc) might be impressed with the depth with which Brigham wrote. However, not all of the students are on the same level, and this must be taken into consideration when the author revises the text. We are using the text as a guide for learning, not as a means to evaluate the author's aptitude in the field of finance...

Editorial Review:

"Why aren't you using the ONLY book expressly written for your Intermediate/Advanced Corporate Finance course?" This comprehensive text contains enough background material to refresh and reinforce earlier courses in corporate finance while still providing enough advanced material to stimulate the most advanced learner. The predominant strengths of clarity, current coverage, and friendliness to learner and instructors continue in this new edition. The instructor's resources enable outstanding easy prep and presentations.

Good reframing 3 out of 5 stars.

This book is still very timely, but I also highly recommend "Growing Great Employees" by Erika Andersen as an addition to this book. Growing Great Employees: Turning Ordinary People into Extraordinary Performers

THE reference on organizational theory 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The fact that Reframing Organizations is often used as a university textbook should be a subtle warning that this is not a quick-read or how-to book. However, it is THE overview of the broad practice of organizational theory. Bolman and Deal utilize models based on four different views of the organization to show how to analyse and comprehend the dynamics of organizational structure and function. As a software engineer I found this "multi-model view to understanding" similar to how we model software systems from a variety of perspectives.

While comprehensive, the book is yet readable and accessible to the layperson, and quickly gives the reader a broad understanding of organizational dynamics and structures viewed through the lenses of the four "frames." This book won't give you quick practical fixes for your organizational problems - but it will give you a broad base of understanding for thinking about the problems you face in organizational life and understanding why your organization functions (or dysfunctions!) the way it does.

Editorial Review:

At a time when managers everywhere are seeking strong but sensible ways to reorient their companies for the coming millennium, a new edition of Reframing Organizations: Artistry, Choice, and Leadership, by Lee Bolman and Terrence Deal, reintroduces the bestselling authors' clear and insightful approach to "big picture" management. Updated examples add to those previously drawn from business, education, health care, and the public sector to help today's leaders prepare more creatively for tomorrow's needs.

So-So 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Some things were explained in the book fairly well, however it is too wordy. Once again these textbooks do a bang-up job of taking your money and confusing the hell out of you. This is why people are afraid to take classes like Corporate Finance or even pursue a degree in related fields.

This book is written many levels above the students head and it is supposed to be BASIC! It's funny many of these authors are just instructors with an extremely high level of education (Phd's) and no REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE! Thankfully I had a great teacher that had oodles of experience, or else I would need some boots to step through this...

"Brigham/Houston: A Classic, redefined...because a classic never goes out of style." The market leader, Brigham/Houston, continues to grow in reputation and amount of users as the most effective approach for teaching the first undergraduate corporate finance course. The seamless, integrated ancillary package, still painstakingly prepared by the authors, is a hallmark of the Brigham/Houston package which reduces course preparation time for instructors and makes the subject more accessible for learners. New for this edition is the addition of iLrn Finance, an online student assessment and tutorial resource to help improve student performance. Additionally, access to Thomson ONE - Business School Edition, an online financial database that students can use to complete projects or select end of chapter exercises, is included with each new text.

Guest Reviewer: Marshall Goldsmith
Marshall Goldsmith has been recognized by almost every major business publication as one of America's leading executive educators and coaches. He is the author or co-editor of 22 books, including What Got You Here Won't Get You There--a New York Times bestseller and Wall Street Journal #1 business book.

I consider Leadership Challenge by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner to be the best research-based book ever written in the field of leadership.

What I love about this book is that it is actually written for its readers!

Let's face it--very few readers of business books are CEO's of multi-billion corporations. Yet many business books follow the same over-used formula--interviewing CEOs--talking about what they are doing so well--and suggesting that you do the same thing.

Leadership Challenge is based upon learnings from leaders at all levels--and shows how "regular people" can make a huge, positive difference in their organizations. It is written in a way that can help executives, mid-managers, first-line supervisors, project leaders--and even individual contributors--better understand how they can lead--and be able to immediately apply what they have learned in their work.

My favorite movie is The Wizard of Oz. Three of the movie's main characters are seekers: the scarecrow--who is searching for a brain--or wisdom, the tin man--who is searching for a heart--or compassion, and the lion--who is searching for the nerve--or courage. Leadership Challenge helps its readers, who are also seekers, find all three. It shows how real leaders can demonstrate the wisdom--needed to build a vision and show the way, the courage--needed to the challenge the system and do what is right, and the compassion--needed to care for and inspire others.

Although my Ph.D. is in Organizational Behavior, my undergraduate background is in mathematics. I respect people who gather real facts and don't just "shoot from the hip." Jim and Barry have developed the "Leadership Practices Inventory"--which is possibly the world's most widely-respected tool for 360° leadership feedback. They have thoroughly reviewed input from tens of thousands of respondents and used this data to form sound conclusions about what works--and what doesn't work--in terms of leadership behavior.

My recent book, What Got You Here Won't Get You There, talks about why it can be so challenging for successful people to make the changes that they need to "go to the next level." Jim and Barry have not fallen into the classic "successful author's trap." Given the tremendous success of the first edition of Leadership Challenge, they could have easily thought, "Why change this? It is a huge winner!" Instead they have put in countless hours to make each new edition of this classic better than the previous editions. They have worked to incorporate both what they have learned, through their ongoing research--and what they have observed, through their observations of the changing world of work--to make this edition the best--and most relevant--for today's readers.

My final comment for you as a reader: don't just learn from this book--do something with what you learn. This is a practical guide that can help you lead in a way that makes your organization a better place. Take advantage of this opportunity to make a positive difference in your own life--and in the lives of the people that you lead. --Marshall Goldsmith

Editorial Review:

Completely Updated and Revised

This revised edition of Peter Senge’s bestselling classic, The Fifth Discipline, is based on fifteen years of experience in putting the book’s ideas into practice. As Senge makes clear, in the long run the only sustainable competitive advantage is your organization’s ability to learn faster than the competition. The leadership stories in the book demonstrate the many ways that the core ideas in The Fifth Discipline, many of which seemed radical when first published in 1990, have become deeply integrated into people’s ways of seeing the world and their managerial practices.

In The Fifth Discipline, Senge describes how companies can rid themselves of the learning “disabilities” that threaten their productivity and success by adopting the strategies of learning organizations—ones in which new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured, collective aspiration is set free, and people are continually learning how to create results they truly desire.

The updated and revised Currency edition of this business classic contains over one hundred pages of new material based on interviews with dozens of practitioners at companies like BP, Unilever, Intel, Ford, HP, Saudi Aramco, and organizations like Roca, Oxfam, and The World Bank. It features a new Foreword about the success Peter Senge has achieved with learning organizations since the book’s inception, as well as new chapters on Impetus (getting started), Strategies, Leaders’ New Work, Systems Citizens, and Frontiers for the Future.

Mastering the disciplines Senge outlines in the book will:

• Reignite the spark of genuine learning driven by people focused on what truly matters to them
• Bridge teamwork into macro-creativity
• Free you of confining assumptions and mindsets
• Teach you to see the forest and the trees
• End the struggle between work and personal time

Statistics for Business and Economics (with CD-ROM)

This book is geared toward business majors who need to have a solid understanding of statistical data as it relates to business concepts. Algebra was a pre-requisite when I took this course, but being familiar with algebra and its concepts won't help you much. Topics are not explained thoroughly which leaves the task of finding the missing pieces to understand the concept to the reader. Working the sample problems provides you with an answer, but doesn't walk you through the steps to solving the problem.

The book also skips over some topics that are in other broader based basic statistics books. Some of which I feel are important for business majors to know as they work with their clients, who may not be business majors. I had to purchase another book to de-code what this one was saying. Once I did, I was able to understand the material better.

Editorial Review:

With Anderson/Sweeney/Williams' market-leading STATISTICS FOR BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS, 10e, you'll learn much more than simply how to solve statistical equations. You'll discover how statistical results provide insights into business decisions and present solutions to business problems. Numerous actual examples, proven methods, and application exercises provide practical clarity to even complex concepts, while self-testing exercises allow you to assess your personal understanding. Maximize your study time and efficiently complete homework with this edition's innovative CengageNOW online learning system that creates a personalized study plan focusing on the statistical concepts you still need to master. A useful CD-ROM, available at no extra cost with each new text, provides data files to help you master key statistical software for success in today's classroom and tomorrow's business world.
