Better Title: Intro to Statistics using Excel Add-ins 3 out of 5 stars.
27 of 27 people found this review helpful.

On the positive side, this book has many excellent case studies and examples. It is well written and interesting. However, I was disappointed, as I was expecting use of Excel to rigorously solve decision making and data analysis problems. The focus of the book is mostly traditional statistics solved using a group of commercial add-ins for Excel. If this is what you want, then the book would get five stars. However, for data analysis and decision making, I think a more thorough treatment using Excel without relying so much on the add-ins would have been appropriate.

Editorial Review:

Master data analysis, modeling, and spreadsheet use with DATA ANALYSIS AND DECISION MAKING WITH MICROSOFT EXCEL! With a teach-by-example approach, student-friendly writing style, and complete Excel integration, this quantitative methods text provides you with the tools you need to succeed. Margin notes, boxed-in definitions and formulas in the text, enhanced explanations in the text itself, and stated objectives for the examples found throughout the text make studying easy. Problem sets and cases provide realistic examples that enable you to see the relevance of the material to your future as a business leader. The CD-ROMs packaged with every new book include the following add-ins: the Palisade Decision Tools Suite (@RISK, StatTools, PrecisionTree, TopRank, and RISKOptimizer); and SolverTable, which allows you to do sensitivity analysis. All of these add-ins have been revised for Excel 2007.

Editorial Review:

Most organisations consist of multiple business and support units, each populated by highly trained, experienced executives. But often the efforts of individual units are not coordinated, resulting in conflicts, lost opportunities, and diminished performance Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton argue that the responsibility for this critical alignment lies with corporate headquarters. In this book, the authors apply their revolutionary Balanced Scorecard management system to corporate-level strategy, revealing how highly successful enterprises achieve powerful synergies by explicitly defining corporate headquarters' role in setting, coordinating, and overseeing organisational strategy. Based on extensive field research in organisations worldwide, "Alignment" shows how companies can build an enterprise-level Strategy Map and Balanced Scorecard that clearly articulate the "enterprise value proposition": how the enterprise creates value above that achieved by individual business units operating alone. The book provides case studies, actionable frameworks, and sample scorecards that show how to align business and support units, boards of directors, and external partners with the corporate strategy and create a governance process that will ensure that alignment is sustained. The next breakthrough in strategy execution from the field's premier thinkers, "Alignment" shows how today's companies can unlock unrealised value from enterprise synergies.

Editorial Review:

Now beyond its 11th printing and translated into twelve languages, Michael Porter's The Competitive Advantage of Nations has changed completely our conception of how prosperity is created and sustained in the modern global economy. Porter's groundbreaking study of international competitiveness has shaped national policy in countries around the world. It has also transformed thinking and action in states, cities, companies, and even entire regions such as Central America.

Based on research in ten leading trading nations, The Competitive Advantage of Nations offers the first theory of competitiveness based on the causes of the productivity with which companies compete. Porter shows how traditional comparative advantages such as natural resources and pools of labor have been superseded as sources of prosperity, and how broad macroeconomic accounts of competitiveness are insufficient. The book introduces Porter's "diamond," a whole new way to understand the competitive position of a nation (or other locations) in global competition that is now an integral part of international business thinking. Porter's concept of "clusters," or groups of interconnected firms, suppliers, related industries, and institutions that arise in particular locations, has become a new way for companies and governments to think about economies, assess the competitive advantage of locations, and set public policy.

Even before publication of the book, Porter's theory had guided national reassessments in New Zealand and elsewhere. His ideas and personal involvement have shaped strategy in countries as diverse as the Netherlands, Portugal, Taiwan, Costa Rica, and India, and regions such as Massachusetts, California, and the Basque country. Hundreds of cluster initiatives have flourished throughout the world. In an era of intensifying global competition, this pathbreaking book on the new wealth of nations has become the standard by which all future work must be measured.

Great How-To on a Difficult Subject 5 out of 5 stars.
70 of 73 people found this review helpful.

The attention to "emotional intelligence" started with Daniel Goleman's book "Emotional Intelligence" published in 1995. Although an excellent book, this Weisinger book is a better guide to how to USE emotional intelligence. It is full of practical exercises and real world examples. I have used it when I teach the subject and would recommend it if you really want to change and learn new responses when the going gets tough, not just think about it. Best wishes to all who are trying to develop these difficult skills. It ain't easy, but this book makes it easier. A good guide.

This textbook is TERRIBLE! 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book is written in unnecessarily complicated language and does not present information in a way that is easily understood. I teach graduate courses in quantitative methods and I made the mistake of ordering this book for one of my courses without reading it first. It was a disaster!

Unless you are getting a doctorate and need to know lots of complicated formulas without adequate explanations, DO NOT buy this book.

Editorial Review:

This revision of the classic Quantitative Methods for Business provides readers with a conceptual understanding of the role that quantitative methods play in the decision-making process. This text describes the many quantitative methods that have been developed over the years, explains how they work, and shows how the decision-maker can apply and interpret data. Written with the non-mathematician in mind, this text is applications-oriented. Its Problem-Scenario Approach motivates and helps the reader to understand and apply mathematical concepts and techniques. In addition, the managerial orientation uses examples that illustrate situations in which quantitative methods are useful in decision making.

Excellent concise strategic management manual. 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Fred David has written an excellent and concise book on startegic management. His methods of including easy to understand and use matrices is a godsend to most students at under graduate level. The TOWS matrice developed by Fred David is one of the best tools available in strategic management, it is so simple, yet on one page you can view a company's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and devise alternative strategies to make the best use of your SWOT analysis. The cases in the book are short and to the point and the low price should ensure it is used throughout the world by management students. John McElvaney. Management Lecturer. Melbourne Australia.

Editorial Review:

KEY BENFIT: Designed in functional four-color, this book offers a popular practitioner-oriented perspective, focuses on skill-building in all major areas of strategy formation, implementation, and evaluation, and weaves three very contemporary themes throughout each chapter—globalization, the natural environment, and e-commerce. Forty-one Experiential Exercises, and 41 cases are included. Topics covered include corporate culture, organizational structure, marketing concepts, financial tools and techniques, strategy implementation issues, as well as extensive coverage of global issues, concerns and idiosyncrasies. For anyone interested in the fields of Strategic Management, Strategy, and Business Policy.

Of the best business books ever 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

It's amazing this book isn't handed out to every literate adult in America. In so few pages, it completely challenges linear thinking about everything from running a meeting to raising kids, and you'll find yourself constantly finding real-world examples of what he's talking about after you read it. Though much of what he writes may not be new, as he frequently cites the predecessors he learns from, the ingenuity is how he coherently and concisely pulls it all together.

Editorial Review:

An original, contrarian philosophy that challenges today's leaders to look past the quick fix and deal thoughtfully with the real complexities of managing people.

In organizations, as in life, human behavior is often irrational -- and problems do not easily lend themselves to the simplistic answers and gimmickry offered in the myriad business "self-help" books and management training programs available today. In Management of the Absurd, Richard Farson zeros in on the paradoxes of communication, the politics of management, and the dilemmas of change, exploring relationships within organizations and offering a unique perspective on the challenges managers face.
