Editorial Review:

A business parable about how companies can achieve remarkable results by helping their employees fulfill their dreams

Managing people is difficult. With disengagement and turnover on the rise, many managers are scratching their heads wondering what to do. It’s not that we don’t dream of being great managers, it’s just that we haven’t found a practical and efficient way to do it. Until now . . .

The fictional company in this remarkable book is grappling with real problems of high turnover and low morale -- so the managers begin to investigate what really drives the employees. What they discover is that the key to motivation isn’t necessarily the promise of a bigger paycheck or title, but rather the fulfillment of crucial personal dreams. They also learned that people at every level need to be offered specific kinds of help and encouragement -- or our dreams will forever remain just dreams as we grow dissatisfied with our lives and jobs.

Beginning with his important thought that a company can only become the-best-version-of-itself to the extent that its employees are becoming better-versions-of-themselves, Matthew Kelly explores the connection between the dreams we are chasing personally and the way we all engage at work. Tackling head-on the growing problem of employee disengagement, Kelly explores the dynamic collaboration that is unleashed when people work together to achieve company objectives and personal dreams.

The power of The Dream Manager is that simply becoming aware of the concept will change the way you manage and relate to people instantly and forever. What’s your dream?

Great simple insights in a pleasurable format 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have read or listened to a number of Patrick Lencioni's books. The fable format makes them entertaining, and the simple management principles ring true. I gave this four stars because it is eclipsed by another one of Pat's books that shares some of the principles and has a better story line to bring it home. The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable

In the four obsessions book we learn that the secret of company success is
1. Build and maintain a cohesive leadership team
2. Be very clear about your message/mission/values
3. Over communicate your message/mission/values thoughout the org.
4. Set up systems that reinforce this organization clarity.

Of course that are more details with the above (which I have paraphrased).

Pat adds a helpful review of the model at the end of the fable. I really recommend this book!!

Editorial Review:

In this stunning follow-up to his best-selling book, The Five Temptations of a CEO, Patrick Lencioni offers up another leadership fable that's every bit as compelling and illuminating as its predecessor. This time, Lencioni's focus is on a leader's crucial role in building a healthy organization--an often overlooked but essential element of business life that is the linchpin of sustained success. Readers are treated to a story of corporate intrigue as the frustrated head of one consulting firm faces a leadership challenge so great that it threatens to topple his company, his career, and everything he holds true about leadership itself. In the story's telling, Lencioni helps his readers understand the disarming simplicity and power of creating organizational health, and reveals four key disciplines that they can follow to achieve it.

A true classic. The grand grand father of all self help books. Stand the test of time. Very helpful indeed. Must read.

p.s. Below please find some of my favorite "and classical" passages for your reference.

Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe it can achieve. pg 32

Knowledge becomes power only when, and if, it is organized into definite plans of action and directed to a definite end. pg 76

Success requires no explanations. Failure permits no alibis. pg 138

Genuine wisdom is usually conspicuous through modesty and silence. pg 141

Men who accumulate great fortunes are generally known as cold blooded, and sometimes ruthless. Often they are misunderstood. What they have is will power, which they mix with persistence, and place back of their desires to insure the attainment of their objectives. pg 151

Greatest book of all time! 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

John Kotter's international bestseller "Leading Change", struck a powerful chord with legions of managers everywhere. It acknowledged the cynicism, pain, and fear they faced in implementing large-scale change - but also armed them with an eight-step plan of action for leaping boldly forward in a turbulent world. Now, Kotter and coauthor Dan S. Cohen delve deeper into the subject of change to get to the heart of how change actually happens. Through compelling, real-life stories from people in the trenches, in all kinds of organizations, the authors attack the fundamental problem that underlies every major transformation: How do you go beyond simply getting your message across to truly changing people's behavior?Based on interviews within over 100 organizations in the midst of large-scale change, "The Heart of Change" delivers the simple yet provocative answer to this question, forever altering the way organizations and individuals approach change. While most companies believe change happens by making people think differently, Kotter and Cohen say the key lies in making them feel differently. They introduce a new dynamic - "see-feel-change" - that fuels action by showing people potent reasons for change that spark their emotions. Organized around the revolutionary eight-step change process introduced in "Leading Change", this story-driven book shows how the best change leaders use not just reports or analysis, but gloves, video cameras, airplanes, office design, and other concrete elements to impel people toward positive action. The authors reveal how this appeal to the heart-over the mind - motivates people to overcome even daunting obstacles to change and produce breathtaking results. For individuals in every walk of life and companies in every stage of change, this compact, no-nonsense book captures the heart - and the how - of successful change. John P. Kotter, world-renowned expert on leadership at the Harvard Business School, is the author of many books, including the award-winning, best-selling" Leading Change". Dan S. Cohen is a Principal with Deloitte Consulting LLC.

Editorial Review:

The business world is a place of constant change, with stories of corporate mergers, layoffs, bankruptcy, and restructuring hitting the news every day. Yet as veteran consultant William Bridges maintains, the situational changes are not as difficult for companies to make as the psychological transitions. In the best-selling Managing Transitions, Bridges provides a clear understanding of what change does to employees and what employees in transition can do to an organization. Directed at managers and employees in today's corporations, Bridges shows how to minimize the distress and disruptions caused by change. Managing Transitions addresses the fact that it is people who have to carry out the change. When the book was originally published a decade ago, Bridges was the first to provide any real sense of the emotional impact of change and what can be done to keep it from disrupting the entire organization. With new information and commentary on layoffs, corporate suspicion, and the increasing tumult in the business world, Managing Transitions remains the definitive guide to dealing with change.

Much more than the title implies. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I purchased Book Yourself Solid because I was interested in expanding my therapy practice. But when I got to the part where the author asked what I would say if someone asked what I did I realized that this is much more about who I am and what inspires me than about selling generic counseling. Instead of saying that I'm a therapist who works with individuals and couples, I'm telling people that "I help couples rekindle the magic of their relationships." And "I help victims of violence feel safe again - and it happens very quickly."

This book is tightly written, every chapter is short, concise and builds on the last. As I read I did the exercises and by the time I had finished reading I was already marketing myself in a new way and it didn't feel like marketing. In fact, I had a different sense of myself and my work because my work more reflects who I am.
Whatever you are doing, or starting, or thinking about starting, if it's a one on one service business, get this book.

I supervise beginning therapists and I'm recommending this to all my supervisees. (And no, they can't borrow my copy.)

Editorial Review:

Original, wildly inspiring, personal, and provocative, BOOK YOURSELF SOLID is an easy-to-follow road map for starting and growing a service business based on seven core self-promotion strategies. The listener will learn how to develop a strong marketing plan and brand identity, why self-promotion is absolutely critical to their success and how to do it with passion and purpose.

This audio book was great. I needed to read this book for work and since I'm pressed with time I thought getting it on CD would be great. I would play it in the car while I'm driving to work. I would also listen and read along with it before I go to sleep. I would definitely by another audio CD again.

Good summary of the book. Return to the road after years of read the first Covey book.

Extremely Disappointed 1 out of 5 stars.

I am only rating this book 1 because there is no zero rating.

I have read and enjoyed the 7 habits and First Things First; however this book one ways or another is repeat of same concepts and materials in the 7 Habits book.

Way too long, badly written and too many irrelevant details. In brief I think it's a new many making attempt by S. Covey.

Editorial Review:

A Miniature Edition (TM) of Covey’s popular original, The 8th Habit, holds powerful insights that challenge us to find our voice and inspire others to find theirs. The principles in Covey’s pocket-sized The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People guided individuals to improve their lives and organizations. Now The 8th Habit inspires us to thrive, innovate, and lead in order to move beyond effectiveness and into greatness.

So you feel like you’ve started late?

You are not alone.

What if I told you that right now as you flip through this book, 70% of the people in the store with you are living paycheck to paycheck?

And he gives you the time tested plan to do it.

The Start Late, Finish Rich promise is bold and clear:

Even if you are buried in debt – there is still hope.

Real people, real transformations!

"Absolutely amazing! It completely shifts your paradigm for life. One of the most wonderful things about it is that the results are immediate. My whole perception and relationship to money has undergone a major, substantial change."
—Chris Attwood, writer and teacher, California

"I've spent most of my life trying to figure out what's true and what's real. I have to say I now have a clear glimpse into what it really is."
—Tom Hill, Colorado

"Before Busting Loose from The Money Game, I was very unhappy and frustrated in my life. I was driven to find more ways to make money. I changed jobs, cities, countries, went back to school, read books. Financially, the stress was causing anxiety attacks and migraines so severe I stayed in bed. The joy I feel now is priceless. Money is there when I need it, in the amount that's needed, no matter what occurs (car repairs, unplanned trips, etc.). It's absolutely amazing!"
—Suresh Thakoor, Texas

"As a retired professor on a fixed and limited income, I always lived from a tight budget and felt compressed by it-especially at the end of the year. I don't use a budget anymore and have opened up new streams of income that were always closed to me in the past."
—Howard Rovics, Connecticut

"It opened a whole new dimension for me and shifted my perspective on life completely. I especially love how practical it is. The application is so simple, so effective . . . and fun!"
—Doris Kahle, Hagen, Germany

"I'd had a lot of success in the corporate arena, made a ridiculous amount of money and lost a ridiculous amount of money. But I was caught in a cycle of making it, losing it. I needed to break that cycle-for myself and my family-and this gave me the keys to do that. Busting Loose from The Money Game opened a window I had no clue even existed. This is very cutting-edge, a revolutionary approach to unwrapping yourself from limitations. If you're not satisfied with where you are financially and you're concerned about your future, get this book!"
—Ben Coleman, Texas
