Good book but focus is more on how to get to answer fast than process 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Used this book in B-school and loved modeling using @Risk (@Risk is the modelling software that comes with the book - pretty much self intuitive). My only complain with this book is that it was very focused on getting to the answer fast than really exaplaining the process and modeling techniques. After doing few examples you start to develop the intuition ... but I feel that the author could have done a better work in explaing the process behing modeling.

Editorial Review:

This text takes an active-learning approach, providing numerous examples and problems so students can practice extensively with a concept before moving on. Four types of problems -- skill-building, skill-extending, modeling, and cases are graded within sections and chapters to help instructors assign homework. Another important feature is the way that the text integrates modeling into all functional areas of business: finance, marketing, operations management using real examples and real data. The text emphasizes modeling over algebraic formulations and memorization of particular models. Shell files are also provided so that instructors can give students as much or as little information as they need.

Review of current R&D cases 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Buderi explores the recent change of focus in research conducted in the U.S. American research during the 1950s and 60s enjoyed an unprecedented level of funding and latitude in pursuing projects. Basic research was lavishly funded by government agencies and many large corporations built ivory tower research organization that produced Nobel Laureates but not many commercial products. Corporate management has since taken a closer look at the R&D division; cost cutting and downsizing have dramatically changed top managements' perception of R&D. The days of the ivory tower are over and Buderi explores the radical mission changes at many R&D labs across the country. Through interviews with research managers the author gains some valuable information about how these business leaders view R&D, its role within the organization and their style of managing it. The author gives a detailed history of the corporate research division and discusses the attitudes and associated cultures being created at IBM, Siemens, NEC, GE, Bell Labs (Lucent), Xerox, HP, Intel and Microsoft.

Editorial Review:

An inside look at the corporate innovation and technological research going on inside IBM, GE, Lucent, Intel, and Microsoft offers profiles of the R&D "engines" currently operating in some of the biggest companies in America.

Editorial Review:

The subject of management for quality has undergone rapid and drastic change as a result of competition in the marketplace and the vulnerability of industrialized societies that depend heavily on the quality of goods and services. In this companion volume to his acclaimed Juran on Planning for Quality, J.M. Juran provides top-level managers with the specific, field-tested methods they need to successfully lead their companies on the quest for superior quality.

Managers have long recognized that the most sound response to a competitive challenge is to become more competitive. Today, informed managers also realize that quality improvement is the best source of competitive advantage. They know that return on investment in quality improvement projects is among the highest available. Yet, the means by which management can supply the leadership necessary to attain quality goals remains elusive. J.M. Juran has drawn on the experiences of thousands of chief executives in companies around the world to create a clear plan of action applicable to any industry, whether service or manufacturing.

The famous "Juran Trilogy," clearly presented step-by-step, shows how to apply the familiar business concepts of planning, control, and improvement to quality leadership. For each concept, Dr. Juran provides a succinct and proven series of actions. He gives criteria for selecting project-by-project improvements and mobilizing a team to carry them out. He also describes a realistic timetable of implementation and directs the formation of an ongoing quality council whose job is to launch, coordinate, and "institutionalize" annual quality improvement. The membership of this council, as Dr. Juran insists, must come from the ranks of senior managers; the stakes are too high for upper managers not to personally become the leaders and members of this vital council. Using real-world case examples of highly profitable quality improvements in such companies as Bethlehem Steel and Florida Power & Light, Dr. Juran illustrates how to guide a company into a continuing steep rate of improvement. The key, as Dr. Juran emphasizes, is that quality must be implemented from the top down. This essential handbook makes executive leadership the key to a company's quality revolution -- and to producing the real cost benefits over both the short and long run that superior quality brings.

Editorial Review:

Market Response Models: Econometric and Time Series Analysis is the leading source of information on the use of market response models for planning and forecasting. It has served as a text for graduate students in marketing, as a guide for marketing scientists and as a handbook for marketing professionals. In each case the purpose has been the same: capture the excitement and power of a technique so advanced it has literally changed the style of marketing mix decision making.
Now, in its second edition, the authors have provided a thoroughly-updated version for a new generation of marketing scholars and managers. From advances in technology and science to the recognition of database and Internet-age marketing, Market Response Models builds on its reputation as the authoritative text in its field.
The emergence of market response as an essential tool for world-class marketing has made this book even more relevant to practicing managers. Today no one can ignore the competitive edge that market response gives to companies: it is both the high-end of data mining and the basis for decision support. The fact that sales forecasts and marketing decisions can be improved with market response models is just one more reason that companies need to understand-and use-this technique.
As in the first edition, Market Response Models:
  • integrates state-of-the-art technical material with discussions of its relevance to management.
  • provides continuity to a decades-long research stream.
  • illustrates how marketing generalizations are the basis of marketing theory and knowledge.
  • shows how research can be applied to marketing planning and forecasting.
  • presents original research in marketing.
This second edition of Market Response Models:
  • places much more emphasis on the basic building blocks of market response modeling: markets, data, and sales drivers, through a separate chapter.
  • splits the design of response models into separate chapters on static and dynamic models.
  • discusses techniques and findings spawned by the marketing information revolution, e.g., scanner data.
  • emphasizes new insights available on marketing sales drivers, especially improved understanding of sales promotion.
  • demonstrates methodological developments to assess long-term impacts, where present, of current marketing efforts.
  • includes a new chapter on sales forecasting.
  • adds mini-case histories in the form of boxed inserts entitled Industry Perspectives, which are primarily written by business executives.
This book is truly the foundation of market response modeling.

Editorial Review:

This textbook provides a comprehensive modeling, reformulation and optimization approach for solving production planning and supply chain planning problems, covering topics from a basic introduction to planning systems, mixed integer programming (MIP) models and algorithms through the advanced description of mathematical results in polyhedral combinatorics required to solve these problems. This book addresses solving real life or industrial production planning problems (involving complex production structures with multiple production stages) using MIP modeling and reformulation approach. It is based on the twenty years worth of research in which the authors have played a significant role. One of the goals of this book is to allow non-expert readers, students in business, engineering, applied mathematics and computer science to solve such problems using standard modeling tools and MIP software. To achieve this the book provides an introduction to MIP modeling and to planning systems, as well as a unique collection of reformulation results, integrating them into a comprehensive modeling and reformulation approach, as well as an easy to use problem-solving library. Moreover this approach is demonstrated through a series of real life case studies, exercises and detailed illustrations.

Graduate students and researchers in operations research, management, science and applied mathematics wishing to gain a deeper understanding of the formulations and mathematics underlying this approach will find this book useful because of its detailed treatment of the polyhedral structure of the basic lot-sizing problems and simple mixed integer sets that arise in more complicated problems. Reading this book will allow the reader to improve formulations of non-standard MIP models much more effectively and produce state-of-the-art models and algorithms.

Good operations research book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book presents the subjects in a different and novel way which provides many new insights.

In it, there is a great concern with the practical, professional use of operations research, as can be easily seen in the modeling examples. This book could be named "Optimization theory with realistic applications". This book certainly enables the students to apply the theory learned in practical situations, while providing the necessary mathematical foundations.

Rardin exposes the subject in a very clear and non-orthodox manner, unifying all algorithms through the use of the improving-search framework. The text is also innovative, containing sections on Genetic Algorithms, Simulated Annealing, Tabu Search and Branch and Cut.

But if you want to go deeper in some subject (linear programming for example) you will need another book.

Editorial Review:

This book is specifically designed to change the way deterministic optimization is taught to introductory students. Toward this end, it exposes students to the broad scope of the topic, reinforces the basic principles, sparks students' enthusiasm about the field, provides tools of immediate relevance and develops the skills necessary to use those tools.

Poorly written and boring 1 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

The most boring business book I have read. After 95 pages, I have yet to gain any 'nuggets' and am disappointed with the poor standard of writing. Not only does Mr Cooper fail to provide actual step by step examples where his process has been followed successfully, quoted statistics are unhelpful and are clearly provided solely to support his case.
One extract from the book (page 16/17) tells all:
"We find the average success rate of developed products to be about 67%. But averages often fail to tell the whole story: This success rate varies from a low of 0% to a high of 100%, depending on the company!"
I don't think one has to read a book to know that statistic!
Much of what Cooper writes is common sense and I believe of little value to a dynamic organisation wishing to promote the internal development of breakthrough products and their succesful launch thereafter.
I cannot believe that there are not better books available on this subject.

Editorial Review:

As we learned from New Coke, Pets.com, Apple's original handheld device, the Newton, and the reissued Ford Thunderbird, all the promotion in the world won't save a product that somehow isn't right. Robert Cooper is the world's leading expert on making sure your new-product introductions are more like Apple's iPods and less like Newtons.Cooper invented what's called the "stage-gate" process of new-product development-a process used by 60% of all businesses today. For this second edition Cooper has completed a major new study-the largest study of product development practices and results ever undertaken. He analyzed thousands of new success and failures from hundreds of companies, with a particular emphasis on high-technology products and services. Product Leadership won't just tell you what things are helpful to your company's success. Now it will tell you how and how much they help.
