Very Disappointed 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I am using this text for a managerial economics class for MBA students. I selected this text because it includes chapters on statistics, linear programming and risk, which I am covering in the class. Unfortunately, it is filled with errors - typos, incorrect formulas, and misrepresentation of basic economic concepts, such as derived demand. Some of the typos and other mistakes make concepts very confusing for the students. I am extremely disappointed. I expected much better from a book that is the eighth edition. I do not understand how it went to print with so many mistakes. I have contacted the publisher. I will not be using this text again.

Editorial Review:

The seventh edition of this market-leading text continues its tradition of providing a solid foundation of economic understanding for use in managerial decision making. It offers a practical treatment of economic theory and analysis in an intutive, algebra-based format. Its focus is on presenting those aspects of economic theory and analysis that are most relevant to students of business administration, and a wide variety of examples and simple numerical problems are used to illustrate the application of managerial economics to a vast assortment of practical situations. The nature of the decision process and the role that economic analysis plays in that process are emphasized throughout. This major revision is designed to maximize accessibility for an audience with little or no background in economics or higher-level mathematics. The text focuses on the economics--not the mathematics--of the managerial decision process.

Could be better 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This was an assigned text book for a class and even my professor barely used it. It seems to be written from a limited point of view for project management, such as assuming that all project managers interact with customers or that all project managers write proposals. It does, however, go over key subjects from a high level...but not very in depth at all. I hoped for a better textbook for my Proj Management Systems class.

Just right! 4 out of 5 stars.

I have about a decade of PM experience and I decided to finally get a formal education in Project Management. This is the textbook for one of the core graduate-level courses.

The book is organized, well written, and replete with appropriate illustrations and real-world anecdotes. In addition, the case studies at the end of every chapter are very realistic.

I entitled this review, "Just right!" because it is neither too elementary nor too complex for a student learning Project Management for the first time.

Editorial Review:

This text covers everything students need to know about working successfully in a project environment, including how to organize and manage effective project teams. Communication is also emphasized, with a focus on how to document and communicate project developments within and outside of the team. In-depth coverage of planning, scheduling, and cost estimating is also included.

The great megapolitical shift to the information-based society 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

From the back cover:
"In the Sovereign Individual, Davidson and Rees-Mogg explore the greatest economic and political transition in centuries - the shift from an industrial to an information-based society."

The book was first published in 1997. It is now 2008 and I was struck by how prescient and relevant "The sovereign individual" is, several of the changes described in the book are already happening.

In the first chapter they describe four stages for society:
1- hunting and gathering societies
2- agricultural societies
3- industrial societies
4- information societies

Most of the book is devoted to explaining the transition from the industrial to the information society. Chapter 2 "Megapolitical Transformation in Historic Perspective" provides a useful framework for understanding the four stage of society and it's transitions:
1- Topography
2- Climate
3- Microbes
4- Technology

According to the authors technology is the most important factor, because of it's impact on the means of production and on the use of force.

They spend quite a bit of time discussing the importance of violence in each of the four stages of society in shaping the political and social organization.

They share their views on how the information-aged society will impact:

- politics and violence (weakening of the nation-state and the rise of organized crime)
- wealth creation and distribution (unequal and unequal)
- the changes to morality, especially among the elite

The book is written in a friendly but somewhat dark tone. 'Join us on a tour of the past, present and future' they might say. Read it.

Editorial Review:

Two renowned investment advisors and forecasters present their prognostications--political, social, and economic--for the coming years and outline the practical consequences of adapting to the new global economy and the information age. 100,000 first printing. Tour.

Editorial Review:

He’s an American legend, a straight-shooting businessman who brought Chrysler back from the brink and in the process became a media celebrity, newsmaker, and a man many had urged to run for president.

The son of Italian immigrants, Lee Iacocca rose spectacularly through the ranks of Ford Motor Company to become its president, only to be toppled eight years later in a power play that should have shattered him. But Lee Iacocca didn’t get mad, he got even. He led a battle for Chrysler’s survival that made his name a symbol of integrity, know-how, and guts for millions of Americans.

In his classic hard-hitting style, he tells us how he changed the automobile industry in the 1960s by creating the phenomenal Mustang. He goes behind the scenes for a look at Henry Ford’s reign of intimidation and manipulation. He recounts the miraculous rebirth of Chrysler from near bankruptcy to repayment of its $1.2 billion government loan so early that Washington didn’t know how to cash the check.

ISO 9000 Quality Systems Handbook 4th Edition - David Hoyle 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 25 people found this review helpful.

With the introduction of the ISO 9001:2000 standard, a number of publications offering ideas, advice and assistance to anyone who have been charged with implementing quality systems, have made their appearance on the bookshelves. The ISO 9000 Quality Systems Handbook 4th Edition, by David Hoyle is one of the best I have read on this subject. In this 4th edition, David analyzes each section, clause and requirement of the ISO 9001:2000 standard in detail.

David Hoyle has over 30 years experience in quality Management and has authored or co-authored more than five books on ISO 9000. He is also the director of Transition Support, a firm that provides training and consulting in business improvement.

The book is easy to understand and is suitable for students, managers, instructors as well as auditors. The novice ISO practitioner as well as the seasoned ISO 9000 enthusiast will find this book a valuable tool when implementing ISO 9000 quality management systems. For those making the transition from the 1994 version of the standard, this book helps to point out the changes from the 1994 to the 2000 standard.

The standard has changed considerably. In the 4th edition, the meaning of each of the requirements of the ISO 9001:2000 standard is explained in detail and some of the sometimes confusing ISO language is clarified. The author explains why each of the requirements is necessary. He shows how each requirement links to the eight quality management principles on which the ISO 9001:2000 standard was based. The book gives practical guidance on implementing each requirement. This is the strong point of the book.

After introducing some basic quality concepts, the book explains the role, the origins and application of the ISO 9000 family. The succeeding chapters, 4 through 8, correspond to each of the five sections of the standard. This makes it easy when looking for help in understanding and implementing a certain requirement of the standard.

The 4th edition has a summary, a questionnaire that provides food for thought for the reader, and a list of references at the end of each chapter. A glossary and a list of related websites are included in the appendix.

The 4th edition of ISO 9000 Quality Systems Handbook will find a permanent place on your desk. Auditors will find this book indispensable.

Editorial Review:

Since publication of the fourth edition in 2000, David Hoyle has collected the experiences of organizations, quality managers and auditors who have actually worked with the 2000 version of the ISO 9000 family of standards, and these are now presented in this new edition of the leading quality management systems guide.

* The best-selling ISO quality management guide
* Authoritative, clear and unambiguous guidance on all aspects of quality management systems from one of the world's foremost experts on the ISO 9000 family of standards
* Fully updated to the latest experiences of working with ISO 9000, with hard-won information from industry and the service sector, plus quality auditors, on working successfully with the standard

Editorial Review:

In today's information-rich environment, companies can no longer afford to rely entirely on their own ideas to advance their business, nor can they restrict their innovations to a single path to market. As a result, says Harvard Business School professor Henry W. Chesbrough, the traditional model for innovation - which has been largely internally focused, closed off from outside ideas and technologies - is becoming obsolete. Emerging in its place is a new paradigm, 'open innovation', which strategically leverages internal and external sources of ideas and takes them to market through multiple paths. This path-breaking analysis is based on extensive field research, academic study, and the author's own longtime experience working in Silicon Valley.Through rich descriptions of the innovation processes of Xerox, IBM, Lucent, Intel, Merck, and Millennium, and the many spin-offs that have emerged from these firms, "Open Innovation" shows how companies can use their business model to identify a more enlightened role for R&D in a world of abundant information, better manage and access intellectual property, advance their current business, and grow their future business. Arguing that companies in all industries must transform the way they commercialize knowledge, Chesbrough convincingly shows how open innovation can unlock the latent economic value in a company's ideas and technologies. Author Bio: Henry W. Chesbrough is an Assistant Professor and the Class of 1961 Fellow at Harvard Business School.

Editorial Review:

The first edition of Systems Thinking was the first book to develop a working concept of systems theory and to deal operationally with systems methodology. The author has been working for the last 5 years to incorporate parallel development in quantum theory, self-organizing systems and complexity theory, the sum of which is included in this new 2nd edition. He has tested these concepts with 200 executive MBA students, and also with Russell Ackoff, one of the founding fathers of systems thinking. Ackoff reported that it was the most comprehensive systems methodology he has seen.

The 2nd edition features the synthesis of holistic thinking (iteration of structure, function and process), operational thinking (understanding chaos and complexity), sociocultural systems (movement toward a predefined order), and interactive design (redesigning the future and inventing ways to bring it about).

Also added are the operational thinking and self-organizing aspect of sociocultural systems, with updates made to the holistic thinking and interactive design parts to incorporate recent new developments.

* Cutting edge thinking incorporates the interaction of holistic thinking, operational thinking, sociocultural systems, and interactive design to develop an all inclusive systems methodology
* Companion website built solely to accompany and compliment the new edition available at www.interactdesign.com
* Operational thinking and self organizing aspects of sociocultural systems added anew, with the holistic thinking and interactive design parts updated to incorporate new developments

Editorial Review:

Now beyond its 11th printing and translated into twelve languages, Michael Porter's The Competitive Advantage of Nations has changed completely our conception of how prosperity is created and sustained in the modern global economy. Porter's groundbreaking study of international competitiveness has shaped national policy in countries around the world. It has also transformed thinking and action in states, cities, companies, and even entire regions such as Central America.

Based on research in ten leading trading nations, The Competitive Advantage of Nations offers the first theory of competitiveness based on the causes of the productivity with which companies compete. Porter shows how traditional comparative advantages such as natural resources and pools of labor have been superseded as sources of prosperity, and how broad macroeconomic accounts of competitiveness are insufficient. The book introduces Porter's "diamond," a whole new way to understand the competitive position of a nation (or other locations) in global competition that is now an integral part of international business thinking. Porter's concept of "clusters," or groups of interconnected firms, suppliers, related industries, and institutions that arise in particular locations, has become a new way for companies and governments to think about economies, assess the competitive advantage of locations, and set public policy.

Even before publication of the book, Porter's theory had guided national reassessments in New Zealand and elsewhere. His ideas and personal involvement have shaped strategy in countries as diverse as the Netherlands, Portugal, Taiwan, Costa Rica, and India, and regions such as Massachusetts, California, and the Basque country. Hundreds of cluster initiatives have flourished throughout the world. In an era of intensifying global competition, this pathbreaking book on the new wealth of nations has become the standard by which all future work must be measured.
