Editorial Review:

This is the "green book" that started it all -- the first book in English on JIT, written from the engineer's viewpoint. When Omark Industries bought 500 copies and studied it companywide, Omark became the American pioneer in JIT.

Here is Dr. Shingo's classic industrial engineering rationale for the priority of process-based over operational improvements in manufacturing. He explains the basic mechanisms of the Toyota production system, examines production as a functional network of processes and operations, and then discusses the mechanism necessary to make JIT possible in any manufacturing plant.

  • Provides original source material on Just-ln-Time
  • Demonstrates new ways to think about profit, inventory, waste, and productivity
  • Explains the principles of leveling, standard work procedures, multi-machine handling, supplier relations, and much more

If you are a serious student of manufacturing, you will benefit greatly from reading this primary resource on the powerful fundamentals of JIT.

Editorial Review:

The Complete Project Management Office Handbook, Second Edition identifies the PMO as the essential business integrator of the people, processes, and tools that manage or influence project performance. This book details how the PMO applies professional project management practices and successfully integrates business interests with project goals— regardless of whether the scope of the PMO is limited to managing a handful of specific projects or expanded to oversee the total practice of project management within the organization.

The book first considers the five stages of PMO capability, each benchmarking a particular level of capability achieved if functions are fully implemented. Each stage is also indicative of the organization’s maturity in project management, with the PMO’s role and responsibilities advancing from project management oversight and control at the lower end of the competency continuum to strategic business alignment at the higher competency stages.

This revised edition then examines 20 function models that can be used to guide the organization through the deliberation and the development of PMO operational capability. These models suggest what project management capability can be realized through comprehensive implementation of each PMO function.

Providing project and business managers with a starting point that enables them to achieve desired results from project management, The Complete Project Management Office Handbook is an important resource for everyone involved in making project management work effectively within the organization.

Excellent Introduction 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I am half-way through this book and realize that I have used Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) for years. This was the approach we used because of HAZOP studies. If you look at the methodology, they are the same. It is an excellent book for first-pass economics of preventive maintenance (PM). Through numerous examples, he shows when to PM, when you are spending too much for PM, and when to just run the damn thing 'til it breaks. As I said, it is a great introduction. I have picked up Doc Palmer's book and can see I would be lost without preparation. If there are any short-comings, it is grammar and spelling. There are numerous typographical errors. Most engineers seem to have taken an-engineer's only english class in college. I found the errors troubling but the writing clear and concise. A very good book for a refresher (as in my case), or an introduction.

6-Sigma Explained 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Mr Joe Metter, a manager at American Burger, is suddenly laid off after 20 years of work there. By impulse and out of panic he calls his old buddy Larry Hogan. Larry turns out to be an executive with American Pizza. American Burger and American Pizza are subsidiaries of American Foods, and Larry and Joe had met each other while both worked in the mailroom at American Foods where they started their careers. The two friends agree to meet for lunch, and it is over lunch that Joe learns about 6-Sigma.

Larry's company, American Pizza previously a weak link in the American Foods chain, is doing very well; it is on the 6-Sigma diet, so to speak. And what is that? Six Sigma is "a statistical measure and a management philosophy" (p.17) that reduces error, waste, and corresponding cost. Page 28ff focus on the technical definition. By reducing error and waste, 6-Sigma increases customer satisfaction and company profitability simultaneously.

However, before there are satisfied customers and profitable firms, 6-Sigma empowers people. The book describes six steps to empowering people: problem definition, measurement, analysis, improvement, and control. See page 93.

Once people are empowered, it's time to put the process to work. The process aims at customer satisfaction. This is followed by product/service delivery. Profitability is simply a function of customer satisfaction. In other words, the goal of 6-Sigma is to reduce error and waste. The objectives for accomplishing those goals are: problem definition, measurement of desired outcomes, analysis, improvement, and control.

I have read six books of different lengths on Six Sigma in the last four years. This is by far the clearest and easiest to read. Kudos!

Editorial Review:

Never before has a business initiative transformed corporations so dramatically. While it has been credited with improving productivity, slashing costs, and improving profit margins, it can cause much angst among employees who need to change the way they currently work and adhere to a new philosophy.  That's where characters Joe and Larry step in to deliver The Power of Six Sigma. This fictionalized tale simplifies a complicated topic through the lives of two typical business professionals. Contrary to other books on the subject, The Power of Six Sigma explains the overall philosophy of Six Sigma effectively in a nonthreatening way, taking no more than two hours to read.

It's one of the hot topics for the 1990s - how to apply quality improvement techniques originally developed for the manufacturing sector to service industries. "How to Take the Lead in Business Process Management" details how to do it, providing a step-by-step formula that helps companies improve quality and productivity in the support areas. Here, in one comprehensive volume is all the information an organization needs to start the improvement process right away: how to determine customer needs and expectations and deliver the best service; how to establish which processes drive your business; how to create process improvement teams and train team leaders; how to eliminate bureaucracy, simplify the process, and reduce processing time; how to measure progress and provide feedback to participants; how to document the levels of improvement and certify operations and activities; and how to ensure ongoing improvement. Two special features further enhance the value of this highly practical guide: a chapter of case histories, showing the results of business process improvement, and an exhaustive section that guides readers in the application of problem-solving methods, value analysis and process analysis techniques, perfection analysis, work simplification programs, and more.

Editorial Review:

Today, a company's capability to conceive and design quality prototypes and bring a variety of superior products to market quicker than its competitors is increasingly the focal point of competition, contend leading product development experts Steven Wheelwright and Kim Clark. Drawing on six years of in-depth, systematic, worldwide research, they present proven principles for developing the critical capabilities for speed, efficiency, and quality that have worked again and again in scores of successful Japanese, American, and European fast-cycle firms.

The authors argue that to survive, let alone succeed, today's companies must construct a new "platform" -- with new methodologies -- on which they can compete. Using their model for development strategies, Wheelwright and Clark show that firms can create a solid architecture for the integration of marketing, manufacturing, and design functions for problem solving and fast action -- particularly during the critical design-build-test cycles of prototype creation.

They demonstrate further how successful firms such as Honda in automobiles, Compaq in personal computers, Applied Materials in semi-conductors, Sony in audio equipment, The Limited in apparel, and Hill-Rom in hospital beds have employed recent methodologies to bring new products to market at break-neck speed. Such innovations include design for manufacturability, quality function deployment, computer-aided design, and computer-aided engineering.

Finally, Wheelwright and Clark emphasize the importance of learning in the organization. Companies that consistently "design it right the first time" and follow a path of continuous improvement in product and process development have a formidable edge in the crucial race to market.

From noted Six Sigma consultant and author George Eckes, Six Sigma for Everyone explains the underpinnings of the revolutionary quality assurance methodology, offers in-depth examples, and outlines the impact and desired end result of implementation.
