Real, Measurable Quality in Health Care 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This is my favorite example of a visionary solution since reading How to Measure Anything: Finding the Value of "Intangibles" in Business by Hubbard. Kenney's work would have been a great example for Hubbard and Hubbard's methods would have solved many of the challenges of Donald Berwick and Paul Batalden, the heroes of The Best Practice.

Whether the average patient can tell it or not, the quality of health care is improving measurably thanks largely to a passionate devotion of Berwick and Batalden to their cause. The biggest surprise for me in the book is how even a culture as entrenched as medicine can start to change its ways when quality becomes a quantity that is measured and used as a yardstick for improvement. Champions of the quality control methods W.E. Demming developed for other businesses, Berwick and Batalden decide to implement standards of quality already known in other professions to perhaps the profession perhaps most resistant to objective measurement. And we are all better off for it.

Editorial Review:

Americans have always thought their healthcare system was the best in the world. But starting in the late 1990s, shocking reports emerged that showed this was far from the truth. Treatment-related deaths or “complications” were found to be the fifth leading cause of death for Americans, and hundreds of thousands of patients were being harmed by botched medical procedures.

Spurred by the quality crisis, a group of visionary physicians led by Donald Berwick and Paul Batalden embarked on a study of industrial “quality improvement” techniques, daring to apply them to the practice of medicine despite resistance from the medical community. The Best Practice tells the story of this burgeoning movement, and of how the medical landscape is being radically transformed—for the better.

Simple! 3 out of 5 stars.

Good quick read!

In essence, this is yet another book to stop procastinating and start doing.

I like the style in which it is narrated, interesting.
There is nothing very new I found that I did not find in other similar books. What I however liked is the tittle and relating some content to the title.

A quick read. Borrow this book if you can. I would not recommend a buy!

This IS what a procrasinator needs! 5 out of 5 stars.

I've read a few reviews here that claim that Brian Tracy's "Eat That Frog" is useless and devoid of content. Well, I couldn't disagree more! I would like to meet Mr. Tracy and shake his hand; for his book has turned my life around! Recently, I have indeed actually doubled my income and I've learned to speak Lithuanian, which has been a goal of mine for 7 years. He does not go into lengthy discourses into the psychology of procrastination because that is exactly what a procrastinator does NOT need. As a hard-core procrastinator (it almost landed me in jail...yes...I was that bad) it was refreshing to hear someone say, "Hey! Just get on with it! You CAN do it!" Give this book an honest shot. Just start eating your frogs, one at a time, beginning with the biggest and ugliest one and I can tell you from experience that you will gain a great feeling of well-being and self confidence. And, most of all, you'll forget what being a procrastinator is like. Think about it too much, and you'll fall into the negative spiral that we all know too well. But, take action and you'll move into a new stage of life...the one you've been waiting for (the wait is over!...why were you waiting anyway?)

Editorial Review:

The legendary Eat That Frog! (more than 450,000 copies sold and translated into 23 languages) provides the 21 most effective methods for conquering procrastination and accomplishing more. This new edition is revised and updated throughout, and includes brand new information on how to keep technology from dominating our time.

Six Sigma (etc) tools Handy Desk Ref 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Worth a lot more than I paid for it. Two copies on my desk. One loaner. It gets lots of mileage. THIS IS A GREAT DESK REFERENCE.

A Concise Reference Book for Quick Review 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It is a handy reference book that packed with tools and key points. In view of its approach and its size, I would say it reasonably include the information. Yet, if would be better (a) if its size be reduced in view of its contents; or (b) expand the contents a little more for giving more details; plus samples would be better. The book contains samples but are very brief. Don't read it as a reference book, it is not. Neither don't regard it as a textbook. If you want to have a briefing or general idea, then, this is quite a good book. If you are new to Six Sigma, I also recommend it to you for its size and contents. May be some other people with in-depth knowledge of Six sigma would tell if it is also good for them for revision.

Editorial Review:

The world’s largest and most profitable companies – including the likes of GE, Bank of America, Honeywell, DuPont, Samsung, Starwood Hotels, Bechtel, and Motorola – have used Six Sigma to achieve breathtaking improvements in business performance, in everything from products to processes to complex systems and even in work environments. Over the past decade, over $100 billion in bottom-line performance has been achieved through corporate Six Sigma programs.  Yet, despite its astounding effectiveness, few outside of the community of Six Sigma practitioners know what Six Sigma is all about.

With this book, Six Sigma is revealed to everyone.  You might be in a company that’s already implemented Six Sigma, or your organization may be considering it.  You may be a student who wants to learn how it works, or you might be a seasoned business professional who needs to get up to speed. In any case, Six Sigma For Dummies is the most straightforward, non-intimidating guide on the market. This simple, friendly book makes Six Sigma make sense.

With a compelling foreword by Dr. Stephen R. Covey, the internationally recognized leadership authority and bestselling author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and The 8th Habit, and an afterword by Roxanne O’Brasky, President of the International Society of Six Sigma, Six Sigma For Dummies is the most complete and objective book in the market today.

Unlike most other works that are either graduate-level statistics treatises or thinly-veiled autobiographical success stories, Six Sigma For Dummies teaches the reader all the foundation principles, methods, and tools of this magnificent problem-solving system.

Intended to help readers understand Six Sigma and how they can use it to improve their performance, this no-nonsense guide explains:

  • What Six Sigma is all about and how it works
  • The benefits of Six Sigma in organizations and businesses
  • The powerful “DMAIC” problem-solving roadmap
  • Yellow, Green and Black -- how the Six Sigma "belt" system works
  • How to select and utilize the right tools and technologies
  • Speaking the language of Six Sigma
  • Knowing the roles and responsibilities
  • Mastering the statistics skills and analytical methods

Six Sigma For Dummies will become everyone’s No. 1 resource for discovering and mastering the world’s most famous and powerful improvement tool.  Stephen Covey is spot-on when he says, “Six Sigma For Dummies is a book to be read by everyone”.

This book is set up for anyone to have many tools for them to use at anytime. It has flowcharting, public speaking, many diagrams, and several team based exercises to help become better. In the front of the book it has a tool selector, and it takes some of the guess work out of tool selection. This is just one of many great books this company offers. Our copmany uses several of these in our professional training with our clients. This is a really good book for those looking for continuous improvement. The Memory Jogger Plus is an excellent book also and has many great tools and other goodies.
