Doubles as inexpensive textbook on operations research 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Some of the primary tools used by operations researchers are statistics, optimization, stochastics, queueing theory, game theory, graph theory, and simulation. Because of the computational nature of these fields operations research also has ties to computer science, and thus this outline is useful to people from both fields. OR is concerned with optimization problems in which one seeks to maximize or minimize a specific quantity. The first part of this book is on optimization via linear, integer, and nonlinear programming. Next, network analysis is covered. Network analysis is the general name given to certain specific techniques which can be used for the planning, management and control of projects. Two different techniques for network analysis were developed independently in the late 1950's - PERT (Program Evaluation and Review Technique) and CPM (Critical Path Management). These techniques are also covered in the outline. The next subject tackled is that of inventory models - allowing shortages, allowing price discounts, risk conditions, etc., and their mathematical modeling. Game theory, decision theory, and dynamic programming are all explained in the context of inventory models and forecasting. Finally, there is coverage of Markov chains and queueing theory. Queuing Theory arises from the use of mathematical analysis to theoretically describe production processes along with statistical/probabilistic techniques to account for varying dynamic patterns within the stages of a productive process. The problem to be met is simply entitled "congestion", what happens when a system does not operate smoothly or efficiently.
I really liked this Schaum's outline, and I used it to teach myself most of the mathematical processes covered without the need for any additional resources. The theory is given in small doses along with very illustrative examples. The mathematics starts with simple algebra and works up to nothing more complex than probability and statistics. I highly recommend it for anybody enrolled in an operations research class as well as computer scientists and mathematics students that are studying any subset of the topics covered in this book.

12 Step Program for Underearning 3 out of 5 stars.
35 of 35 people found this review helpful.

I first read a book written by Mundis when looking for help with my cronic writer's block, and while his system didn't produce an instant cure it continues to give me a bit of understanding and support for times when the pen won't write and the keys won't move. Like many writers Mundis confesses to periods of ineritia, and underactivity, and uses the 12 Steps to help guide the underemployed and underpaid to rightful livelihood. This is not an business book in the strict sense, he's more a kindly godfather whispering good advice, and dishing out the daily chores for making a living. If you wonder why your friends always seem to have more, why raises never come to you and why you are always starting over, the answers are here; and the advice is reasonable even for people adverse or unwilling to do a 12 Step program,

Great Intro to Deming 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Mary Walton presents a detailed biography of the Guru of Quality, Edward Deming, based on her lengthy involvement with Deming and his quality training programs. Also, this book features an introduction by Deming.

The majority of this book is dedicated to Walton's interpretation of Deming's 14 points, which encourages organizations to: have a constancy of purpose, adopt a new philosophy, not rely on mass inspections, not to accept contracts based on price alone, constantly improve processes, train and retrain, institute solid leadership, drive out fear in the workplace, breakdown departmental barriers, eliminate slogans, eliminate quotas, remove barriers to pride in workmanship, and take action to transform the organization.

Walton's book does a good job of presenting Deming's theories, which I highly recommend to newcomers to the quality movement. Those experienced in this area and familiar with Deming's 14 points may not benefit as much from this book, but may enjoy a different take on Deming's ideas and somewhat dated examples.

Editorial Review:

Whether you are the owner of a small business, a middle manager in a mid-sized company, or the CEO of a multinational, this book can show you how to improve your profits and productivity. Change, Dr. Deming believes, should start at the top with an informed, quality-conscious management. His 14 points for managers offer practical applications for everyday business life.

Beginners Guide to Product Management 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This and the handbook are very similar, you need only one. This is a difficult topic to cover when you are not sure of the depth of background of the reader. Does the reader have knowledge of marketing or not. To this point it appears in many places the book assumes you do not, so any general marketing text could be a better source.

Best for beginners in Product Management 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a very good book if you are new to product management or are making a career switch from a non-managerial career to product management. If you have managed one or two product life cyles in the past, you are less likely to benefit from it.

A significant portion of this book is devoted to general management, but in the product management context. Nonetheless, the book is very well organized and systematic. It develops concepts in detail and offers a wealth of information, that you would otherwise have to pay a lot more to collect from other sources. I would highly recommend it to all beginners in this discipline. Experienced individuals may use it as an occassional reference.

Editorial Review:

The ideal companion to the author's bestselling The Product Manager's Handbook, The Product Manager's Field Guide expands upon the overview and the responsibilities of product managers and delves into specific skills, abilities, and competencies to help them improve their performance. It provides readers with tools and exercises for functions such as marketing, planning, forecasting, and new product development and offers step-by-step instructions for activities designed to monitor and assess product-planning efforts.

In a world where customers regard flawless products as a given, service is the key differentiator between competitors in any field. This wise and inspiring book by Leonard Berry, our leading service expert, moves far beyond his pioneering work in services marketing and service quality to explain how great service companies meet their toughest challenge: sustaining long-term success.

From Berry's exacting study of fourteen mature, highly successful, labor-intensive companies comes an astonishing revelation: the single most important factor in building a lasting service business is not a matter of savvy business practice, but of humane values. In all fourteen award-winning companies -- Bergstrom Hotels, The Charles Schwab Corporation, Chick-fil-A, The Container Store, Custom Research Inc., Dana Commercial Credit, Dial-A-Mattress, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Midwest Express Airlines, Miller SQA, Special Expeditions, St. Paul Saints, USAA, and Ukrop's Super Markets -- values-driven leadership connects with strategic focus, executional excellence, control of destiny, trust-based relationships, generosity, investment in employee success, acting small, and brand cultivation to drive customer satisfaction, innovation, and growth. Dedicating a chapter to each of these nine drivers, this book is the most far-reaching and insightful vision ever presented of the principles and step-by-step actions that continuously bring success to life in a company.

Berry's comprehensive model reveals the soul that underlies the strategies and day-to-day operations of great service companies, guiding the thousands of daily decisions of individual employees. Editorial Review:

This introduction for practitioners offers a balanced view of project financing, integrating legal, contractual, scheduling, and other areas that participate in large multiparty projects, large single-asset purchases, and broad-based financing programs for fleets of assets. It mixes theories and case studies but avoids becoming too oriented toward applications in any one particular industry. It focuses on the concepts and techniques required by project finance people without being overly academic or beset by case studies. The author, who has a legal background, recognizes that some legal information is necessary, but he doesn't attempt to write a law book.

Project Finance refers to the techniques of financing projects which are dependent on cash flows for repayment, as defined by the contractual relationships within each project. By their very nature, these types of projects rely on a large number of integrated contractual arrangements for successful completion and operation. Project finance is an element within the larger field of project management. Many organizations around the world utilize project management to enable innovative processes, to plan, organize, and control strategic initiatives, to monitor enterprise performance, to analyze significant deviations, and to forecast their impact on the organization and project(s). Project management can be found in many industries today, from construction and information systems to healthcare, financial services, education, and training.

Key Features:
-A comprehensive and authoritative guide to the theory and practice of project finance.
-An international scope, covering projects in both the developed and developing worlds.
-The book describes and explains:
-Sources of project finance.
-Typical commercial contracts (such as those for construction of the project and sale of its product or services) and their impact on the project finance structure.
-Project finance risk assessment from the points of view of lenders, investors, and other project parties.
-Structuring the project finance debt.
-The key issues in negotiating a project finance debt facility.
-Extensive glossary and cross-referencing.
-No prior knowledge of project finance or financing techniques is assumed.

I just read the Philippy review... 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

...and feel compelled to write in response. I must say it is hard to believe that Mr. Philippy and I are looking at the same book. I wrote an extensive review of this book already some time ago (it is listed below) and still feel the same way, even stronger. The Improvement Guide has continued to be, for me and my students/clients/mentees the "here's how" of Dr. W. Edwards Deming's philosophy. I am at a loss to find any hint of self-promotion of the authors in the book, save what one could reasonably infer about the competency and knowledge of the authors given the wealth of useful, in depth examples it contains. These could only come from deep knowledge of the theory and extensive successful experience in its practice. This book is as devoid of self-aggrandizement as any I have ever read.

I take considerable comfort from the fact that given the principles exemplified by the book, it is unlikely that the authors will over-react and over-adjust their professional aims in response to a single review, and will instead continue the fine work that has been done in this volume. My only question is, will there be a second edition? I would love to see it. In tenor and tone, I for one hope that it is exactly like this one....

A statistical approach to project management 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This book is part of the DeMYSTiFied series. These books are a little more sophisticated than the "For Dummies" or "Idiots" books. Of course they are sneaky with statements like "No fancy formulas" or "No staggering statistics" both statements that must have been written by rocket scientists. That is what this book is "Plain monstrous Formulas" and overwhelming statistics." But the truth is there is no other way to explain "Six Sigma."

The book seems more geared towards Quality than projects but the same thinking process is there. Just as there is a TQM mystic and now PMI's PMBOK we have a Six Sigma culture with it own language that also usurps terms as green and blank belt.

In the end they take what should be a strait forward mathematical problem and attempt to apply it to the unknown to come up with a working risk analysis.

Using this method most projects will survive nicely on two to four sigmas. However this is one tool that I would what to know is at my disposal when tackling the next project. And this book does a good job of getting you off the ground.

Editorial Review:

Taking the mystery out of Six Sigma implementation

This easy-to-understand reference in the popular Demystified series teaches the methods of Six Sigma, explains their applications, and tests expertise without confusing statistics and formulas. Expert Paul Keller and Six Sigma guru Tom Pyzdek describe helpful tools for Six Sigma teams, identifying their uses, limitations, and application during multiple stages of DMAIC. They also outline additional tools for full effectiveness and provide necessary calculations and assumptions. In addition, they provide:

  • Detailed examples and diagrams
  • Practical exercises and complete solutions
  • A final exam to test overall knowledge
  • Materials ideal for self-study or for training groups of Black Belts and Green Belts
