Editorial Review:

Every marketer tells a story. And if they do it right, we believe them. We believe that wine tastes better in a $20 glass than a $1 glass. We believe that an $80,000 Porsche Cayenne is vastly superior to a $36,000 VW Touareg, which is virtually the same car. We believe that $225 Pumas will make our feet feel better-and look cooler-than $20 no-names . . . and believing it makes it true.

Successful marketers don't talk about features or even benefits. Instead, they tell a story. A story we want to believe.

This is a book about doing what consumers demand-painting vivid pictures that they choose to believe. Every organization-from nonprofits to car companies, from political campaigns to wineglass blowers-must understand that the rules have changed (again). In an economy where the richest have an infinite number of choices (and no time to make them), every organization is a marketer and all marketing is about telling stories.

Marketers succeed when they tell us a story that fits our worldview, a story that we intuitively embrace and then share with our friends. Think of the Dyson vacuum cleaner or the iPod.

But beware: If your stories are inauthentic, you cross the line from fib to fraud. Marketers fail when they are selfish and scurrilous, when they abuse the tools of their trade and make the world worse. That's a lesson learned the hard way by telemarketers and Marlboro.

This is a powerful book for anyone who wants to create things people truly want as opposed to commodities that people merely need.

Bosworth is a proven sales performer, trainer, and leader 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Over the decades I've had the chance to work with the author at an early high tech company where he led the internal sales training classes. Later he become a consultant training some of today's largest high tech sales organizations in the world. Mike's always had tough, high standards. His ability to create a repeatable process to selling intangible products to complex organizations has led many of his pupils to excel. Many of them are now SVPs of Sales or CEOs and would be names you recognize.

But, as another reviewer says, you have to use the methodology. Reading the book is just the start.

Great approach to selling, but must focuses on long sale cycle 4 out of 5 stars.

Great approach to selling, but must focuses on long sale cycle and does not pertain to all selling

The Step-by-Step Guide for Selling Solutions 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Solution Selling is the first book that exposed me to the world of complex, intangible and solution (vs. product) selling.

I had wanted to title this review as "The Idiot's Guide to Selling Solutions" BUT found that even though the instructions in the book literally takes a novice in sales through the process of selling complex solutions in a very straightforward manner, there STILL needs to be some thinking required by the sales person to profit from the knowledge within.

Solution Selling is the comprehensive guide for novice to learn the ropes, and a good reference book for seasoned sales pros as well. It is also a useful tool for sales managers to manage the pipelines of their teams too!

Editorial Review:

``Solution Selling is the most comprehensive sales and sales management process available today. Mike Bosworth has the best understanding of sales process in corporate America.''Jeffrey M. Fisher, Vice President, Symix Computer Systems.

You Can Get There 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a seven step guide. Get to the top on Google will help you get your site to the top of the rankings - large or small, your business will show a greater increase in visibility, accessibilty and sales conversion. Although the book doesn't go into the deepest of details, it remains a pretty decent book.

Well worth a read - from an experience ecom guy 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I believe this is my first review on Amazon, but please dont discount me as a newbie. I've been a customer here for many years. I also own a web development studio & business consulting company - and I've been involved with ecommerce for about 12 years...including owning a well established & well performing ecom site for 12 years. I am also a voracious reader, and I appreciate the advanced as well as the basic stuff.

When I found this title on Amazon, I ordered it, and frankly expected a dissapointing pulp about Google basics. While I did get the basics, I was very pleased to find a clear, concise instructional manual of best practices - online resources included.

A few of the other reviews mention the authors continual prodding to visit his website (and consequent promotion of his site)...but after reading the book and visiting (and taking advantage of the resources), I am a believer. The book (after all) is about "promotion," and the author does it well.

While any experienced webmaster, designer, developer (et al) should not be shocked or surprised by any of the information provided in this book, it is a great, all in one resource of the basics - and some things that are easily missed.

I would love to see the author put out a version dedicated solely to the US audience with updated web resources geared specifically towareds us hosted sites.

David - thanks for a good book! I recommend this and will benefit from the information you've provided.

A Must-Read! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have purchased and read a number of books about SEO, PPC and web usability -- as I manage the internet marketing campaign for our small business. We have a large PPC monthly spend & bid prices have continued to skyrocket -- so we have focused on improving our organic search results and also making our PPC campaigns more effective. But we never focused on how well our site converts -- until I read this book. I know this is a common remark I've read about other SEO tips or books -- someone will say that they hope their competitors never get ahold of the same information. Well, I'm always skeptical of those types of claims. But this book is truly an invaluable guide to making your web site more profitable and to convert your visitors into buyers. This is a must-read! And when I read it, I was thinking, I hope our competitors don't read this book -- because all those visitors who are clicking away from the competition because of poor site design can click over to us! And now that we've put these principles into practice, we'll be converting them into customers. I've never written a review on Amazon -- and I've bought & read a lot of books. But I just had to review this one, because it has impacted our web design in such a positive and productive way.

Editorial Review:

Call to Action includes the information businesses need to know to achieve dramatic results from online efforts. Are you planning for top performance? Are you accurately evaluating that performance? Are you setting the best benchmarks for measuring success? How well are you communicating your value proposition? Are you structured for change? Can you achieve the momentum you need to get the results you want? If you have the desire and commitment to create phenomenal online results, then this book is your call to action.

Within these pages, New York Times best-selling authors Bryan and Jeffrey Eisenberg walk you through the five phases that comprise web site development, from the critical planning phase, through developing structure, momentum, and communication, to articulating value. Along the way, they offer advice and practical applications culled from their years of experience "in the trenches."

I feel like I've written another book just from the notes I've taken from Sugarman's work.

If you are involved in the marketing industry where the pen is your tool, you are way behind if you don't have this book.

If I lost this book I would panic. I feel that this could've been one of those $60 marketing reference books you see on the bookshelfs.

Editorial Review:

Why do advertising campaigns and new products often fail? Why do consumers feel that companies don't understand their needs? Because marketers themselves don't think deeply about consumers' innermost thoughts and feelings. Marketing Metaphoria is a groundbreaking book that reveals how to overcome this "depth deficit" and find the universal drivers of human behavior so vital to a firm's success.

Marketing Metaphoria reveals the powerful unconscious viewing lenses--called "deep metaphors"-- that shape what people think, hear, say, and do.

Drawing on thousands of one-on-one interviews in more than thirty countries, Gerald Zaltman and Lindsay Zaltman describe how some of the world's most successful companies as well as small firms, not-for-profits, and social enterprises have successfully leveraged deep metaphors to solve a wide variety of marketing problems. Marketing Metaphoria should convince you that everything consumers think and do is influenced at unconscious levels--and it will give you access to those deeper levels of thinking.

"An imaginative and insightful application of cognitive science to the world of business, rich with implications for both fields."

-Steven Pinker, Johnstone Family Professor, Department of Psychology, Harvard University, and author, How the Mind Works and The Stuff of Thought.

"Marketing Metaphoria is one of the most fascinating business books I have read in a long time. A brilliant combination of deep insight and actionable advice, it will forever change how you think about marketing."

-Daniel H. Pink, author, A Whole New Mind

"Despite the availability of increasingly sophisticated methods, most customer relationships remain standardized, superficial, and lacking in informed customization. Through deep metaphors, the Zaltmans provide an insightful and provocative framework for identifying and learning from the implicit cognitive influences on customer decision making that can enhance and deepen intimacy and loyalty."

-Gary W. Loveman, Chairman, CEO and President, Harrah's Entertainment, Inc.

"Any business seeking to build global brands should read the Zaltmans' groundbreaking work on metaphors. The universal power of deep metaphors crosses borders and generations, and enduring brands trade off this thinking, whether their owners know it or not."

-Tom Long, President and CEO, Miller Brewing Company

"A disruptive book that will change how you think about customer insights. The emotional power offered within these pages will energize you to dig deeper into your business and turn thin functional insights into rich emotional messages that will propel your business."

-Donna J. Sturgess, Global Head of Innovation, GlaxoSmithKline

"With the profound advances in psychology and neuroscience over the past two decades, I'm convinced that now is the time for practitioners to rewrite the 'principles of marketing.' Marketing Metaphoria transforms insights from the authors' research into a rich framework that will help you think more deeply about your consumers and develop more innovative ideas for action. Read it twice, then keep it on your desk for ready reference."

-Bob Woodard, Vice President, Global Consumer and Customer Insights, Campbell Soup Company

Worth not only the money, but the time 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I have purchased other similar books in the past that I skim, but never really take time to read. This book was not only worth the money, it was worth the time. Concisely written, clearly categorized, useful information. I only wish I had read it seven years ago when I first started selling my jewelry, as some of the lessons I have learned a much harder way!
My little company is currently turning into something much bigger and I am so glad I have the insight from this book to help me in negotiating and decision making.

Editorial Review:

Straight from a jewelry-business mentor, this guide to entering the bauble business compiles expert knowledge and wide experiences for those looking to take their hobby to the next level. Aspiring businesspeople will gain the advantage of experience from the numerous case studies and engaging personal stories. Starting with the basics of assessing style, time commitment, and target market, the sections progress through business licenses and tax numbers, developing a cohesive presentation for a business, and the fine art of pricing for a profit. Helpful appendices on display suppliers, business and government agencies, and recommended reading complete the handbook, making it a valuable companion for entrepreneurs.

Tongue Fu 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

If you want complicated - read something else. If you want to make selling easy and rewarding, read this book first.

Marshal arts teaches you to use your opponent's momentum. The Sandler Selling System and tactics are like Tongue Fu. His system gives the salesperson new leverage, which is in both the buyer and the seller's best interest.

I liked it when I first found it, because most sales programs tell you WHAT to do, but Sandler shows you tactically HOW to get it done.

This is the part most sales training misses.

As several reviewers and Sandler himself would have pointed out, reading the book is step 1. Selling requires skill and skills are built over time. These skills, while simple, require some effort to master because the best things Sandler teaches us are counter-intuitive. They are opposite of annoying traditional sales practices. So like any new habit it takes a sustained effort. Just like my new car with a keyless ignition. It took me about a month before I quit trying to put the key in.

Editorial Review:

A guide to the Sandler system of sales uses examples of successful and unsuccessful sales to illustrate Sandler's ideas on turning ordinary salespeople into crack sales reps who can control any situation. 15,000 first printing.
