Editorial Review:

With a new Afterword to the 2002 edition. No Logo employs journalistic savvy and personal testament to detail the insidious practices and far-reaching effects of corporate marketing—and the powerful potential of a growing activist sect that will surely alter the course of the 21st century. First published before the World Trade Organization protests in Seattle, this is an infuriating, inspiring, and altogether pioneering work of cultural criticism that investigates money, marketing, and the anti-corporate movement. As global corporations compete for the hearts and wallets of consumers who not only buy their products but willingly advertise them from head to toe—witness today’s schoolbooks, superstores, sporting arenas, and brand-name synergy—a new generation has begun to battle consumerism with its own best weapons. In this provocative, well-written study, a front-line report on that battle, we learn how the Nike swoosh has changed from an athletic status-symbol to a metaphor for sweatshop labor, how teenaged McDonald’s workers are risking their jobs to join the Teamsters, and how “culture jammers” utilize spray paint, computer-hacking acumen, and anti-propagandist wordplay to undercut the slogans and meanings of billboard ads (as in “Joe Chemo” for “Joe Camel”). No Logo will challenge and enlighten students of sociology, economics, popular culture, international affairs, and marketing.“This book is not another account of the power of the select group of corporate Goliaths that have gathered to form our de facto global government. Rather, it is an attempt to analyze and document the forces opposing corporate rule, and to lay out the particular set of cultural and economic conditions that made the emergence of that opposition inevitable.”—Naomi Klein, from her Introduction

Editorial Review:

Praise for THE TRAVELS OF A T-SHIRT IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY

"Engrossing . . . (Rivoli) goes wherever the T-shirt goes, and there are surprises around every corner . . . full of memorable characters and vivid scenes."
Time

"An engaging and illuminating saga. . . . Rivoli follows her T-shirt along its route, but that is like saying that Melville follows his whale. . . . Her nuanced and fair-minded approach is all the more powerful for eschewing the pretense of ideological absolutism, and her telescopic look through a single industry has all the makings of an economics classic."
The New York Times

"Rarely is a business book so well written that one would gladly stay up all night to finish it. Pietra Rivoli's The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy is just such a page-turner."
CIO magazine

"Succeeds admirably . . . T-shirts may not have changed the world, but their story is a useful account of how free trade and protectionism certainly have."
Financial Times

"[A] fascinating exploration of the history, economics, and politics of world trade . . . The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy is a thought-provoking yarn that exhibits the ugly, the bad, and the good of globalization, and points to the unintended positive consequences of the clash between proponents and opponents of free trade."
Star-Telegram (Fort Worth)

"Part travelogue, part history, and part economics, The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy is ALL storytelling, and in the grand style. A must-read."
—Peter J. Dougherty, Senior Economics Editor, Princeton University Press author of Who's Afraid of Adam Smith?

"A readable and evenhanded treatment of the complexities of free trade . . . As Rivoli repeatedly makes clear, there is absolutely nothing free about free trade except the slogan."
San Francisco Chronicle

In writing the book, Charles Hill draws on his expertise in teaching, writing, and consulting to create the most thorough, up-to-date, and thought-provoking text on the market. I have used this book for an undergraduate course in global marketing
for more than 10 years. My students generally love this book, except the cost.

The book is complete with everything from import, export, culture, supply chain, letter of credit, etc. Anything you name, it got the content. No wonder it is the 13th edition now.

I recommend this book to all instructors and students. Yes, it is bulky. But that is what global marketing is about. You can also use it for MBA students. The difference is, you need to cover case studies in depth.

For any professor that did not work in global marketing as a practitioner, this book may not be for you.

Editorial Review:

Cateora and Graham's "International Marketing" is far and away the best selling text in the field, with a pioneering approach to making the material accessible and relevant that has become the standard by which other books are judged. Providing a well-rounded perspective of international markets that encompasses history, geography, language, and religion as well as economics, Cateora helps students to see the cultural and environmental uniqueness of any nation or region. The 13th edition reflects all the important events and innovations to affect global business within recent years, while including several new and updated technological learning tools.

Editorial Review:

It is well known that with a population of 1.3 billion people, China's market is moving quickly toward surpassing those of North America and Europe combined. Companies from the United States and around the globe are flocking there to buy, sell, manufacture, and create new products. But as former Wall Street Journal China bureau chief turned successful corporate executive James McGregor explains, business in China is conducted with a lot of subterfuge -- nothing is as it seems and nothing about doing business in China is easy.

Destined to become the bible for business people in China, One Billion Customers shows how to navigate the often treacherous waters of Chinese deal-making. Brilliantly written by an author who has lived in China for nearly two decades, the book reveals indispensable, street-smart strategies, tactics, and lessons for succeeding in the world's fastest growing consumer market.

Foreign companies rightly fear that Chinese partners, customers, or suppliers will steal their technology or trade secrets or simply pick their pockets. Testy relations between China's Communist leaders and the United States and other democracies can trap foreign companies in a political crossfire. McGregor has seen or experienced it all, and now he shares his insights into how China really works.

One Billion Customers maximizes the expansive knowledge of a respected journalist, well-known businessman, and ultimate China insider, offering compelling narratives of personalities, business deals, and lessons learned -- from Morgan Stanley's creation of a joint-venture Chinese investment bank to the pleasure dome of a smuggler whose $6 billion operation demonstrates how corruption greases the wheels of Chinese commerce. With nearly 100 strategies for conducting business in China, this unprecedented account combines practical lessons with the story of China's remarkable rise to power.

A good book to understand what everybody else is doing 3 out of 5 stars.
29 of 29 people found this review helpful.

Well, where do I start? This book is useful to understand what every small time operator is doing in this business. You don't want to follow the crowd so I suggest you purchase this book and John Weiley Spiers Book "How Small Business Trades Worldwide". If you follow the techniques outlined by Weiss you're wasting your time, taking on too much risk, and making very little profits. I'm not saying you can't do it, for example, using trade bulletins to find buyers but so is everybody else! This is not an easy business if you do it this way. No real mention of the internet is made to make it useful nor does he focus too much on the marketing aspects which is the most important. Again, there are ways, and very few of them, to make some big profits. In a strange way, I am recommending this book so you understand what everybody else is doing to get into this business, and hopefully you don't follow. If someone is starting off in their own business, I highly recommend you start out as a Manufacturers representative and branch out as an importer/exporter as part of the overall business. [...]

Editorial Review:

The import/export business, buying a product in one country and selling it in another, requires understanding and managing numerous complex tasks - from finding the best product for the market to untangling reams of government regulations. This guide is designed to show entrepreneurs how to get started and prosper in the growing global market. It explains about choosing an appropriate product, targeting a market, preparing a business plan, and navigating the sea of regulations and tax laws.

Ted really knows China 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a must-read for any Western business people venturing into China.

As a Chinese living in US for 10 years, I am amazed by Ted's understanding and appreciation of some of the subtleties of the Chinese culture, e.g. reluctance to say no, huge concern for one's face or mianzi. His treatment of the expat life in China is objective and comprehensive. He also paints an excellent picture of what aspects of China are morphing to be more western-like. His opinions and advices are specific, and backed by facts and his 18-year first-hand experience on the ground. For the thorniest issue, corruption, Ted gave a sound advice of never getting your foot wet in it.

Ted's writing is easy to read. The summaries at the end of each chapter are very useful references.

One thing Ted did not give enough coverage, in my opinion, is the implication of the strong nationalism sentiment reinforced by the Chinese Community Party through the schooling system as well as the media. A lot of Chinese people view the Western powers as greedy and unfriendly because of the humiliation and exploitation suffered by the Chinese in late 1800's and early 1900's. That sentiment is at the root of a lot of the sensitivities.

Another thing I did not quite like is that the catchy subtitle is somewhat misleading. A more accurate subtitle would be "What you have to know before and during doing business in China". But that is a petty flaw in a no-nonsense book.

Editorial Review:

It's common knowledge that China has the fastest growing economy in the world. What is not common knowledge is exactly how Western companies can gain a foothold and increase their profits by doing business inside this next great superpower. Now, respected business journalist Ted Plafker has written a fully detailed, yet user-friendly handbook on how individuals and companies can succeed in this challenging and often confusing environment. Sections include:
- Pinpointing the Top Emerging Markets: A look at promising sectors such as agriculture, automotive, biotech, financial services, media, retail, and more.
- Laws, Rules & Regulations: A how-to guide to China's complicated and ever-shifting legal landscape.
- Understanding Cultural Differences: Vital topics include "Basic Communication,""Talking Politics,""The Little Things," and more.
- Sales & Marketing: How to promote and move products and services to Chinese consumers.

An outstanding practical reference for active exporters. 5 out of 5 stars.

Our copy of this book is being used constantly by our consulting staff. It covers the complicated process of shipping products to foreign markets. We recommend it to our clients, especially those who handle their own international shipping, insurance and payment processing. John R. Jagoe, Director, Export Institute.

Most comprehensive in the market 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

As the title suggests, this is a documentation book and does this job really well. I bought this book as a novice without any knowledge of the procedure and I can comment that now I have good knowledge of the process. Small companies can benefit and may need only 1/4 of this book and large organizations can search from the huge pile of information. Even if you are starting out a small export business, this is one book you should refer to.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive text provides a clear view of the entire export/import process and supplies ready-to-use forms for professionals making their way through the complex, ever-changing world of international rules, laws, regulations, and customs.

eeehhh! 3 out of 5 stars.

It has alot of info and facts. But doesn't help you make any decisions. Read: "The Maui CEO" by John Tennant instead.

A Good Starting Point 4 out of 5 stars.

I ordered this book knowing absolutely nothing about import/export. This book is great for novices. It does a fine job explaining the many facets of import and export. However, before attempting to start your own import/export business, you will need to do a lot more research. This book attempts to cover a great deal of info in just a few pages. Nelson's book is a great place to start your quest for import/export knowledge.

Great book 5 out of 5 stars.

I have bought and read the book. And I can say that this book provides great insights to the reader. I recommend it to everybody who wants to gen involved in international business.

This book was an excellent source of information!! -- A must have! 5 out of 5 stars.

I thought Mr. Nelson did a wonderful job covering the myriad topics involving Importing / Exporting. He did a WONDERFUL job covering the topic of "How to Obtain Financing"! I never knew there were sooo many sources out there to help. He also did a GREAT job covering and diagramming banking processes like Bankers Acceptances.

I could not believe some of the bad reviews--- did those people read the same book??!! No one person is going to be a panacia for any topic--- but Mr. Nelson comes close! Hats off to him for all the effort, research, and expereice that went into this book..........
