Learn to understand the point of view of others 4 out of 5 stars.

After reading this book, you'll put yourself in the other's position. This knowledge will lead to more sales, and richer relationships with clients and co workers. Love it.

The master promoter strikes again 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Jeffrey Gitomer sells the idea of believing in yourself. He gives more than 100 presentations a year, motivating people - probably sales forces - to get out there, believe in themselves and get the job done.

And he does the job well. I've never seen one of his presentations, but this is the second of his books that I've purchased and, frankly, I like them.

Gitomer doesn't pretend to be an intellectual or to be original. What he does do is repackage the basic ideas that have been around for years - and he does it with gusto and style.

If you've never been in sales, then you don't know just how brutal modern commercial life can be. Imagine being in a job where most people are simply going to say no to you, to reject you and sometimes not politely at all. Sales is not a calling that most people could survive in.

And that's why Gitomer is such a welcome voice. That's why his outrageously upbeat style is refreshing. Gitomer is like those kids who come out before a college game and try to rouse the audience. He's far more than a cheerleader: he wants to incite passion in his audience and, just maybe, help them learn a thing or two.

In this little book, he tackles the art of persuasion, which is of course, the essence of sales and marketing. His points are sometimes blindingly apparent, but are overlooked by many, if not most, people. For example, Gitomer tells us "It's not just a presentation. It's a performance." You bet. But so many people just drone on and on boring their audience, not persuading them.

Gitomer is, as I said, a self-promoter. He is proud of himself, perhaps even arrogant. He lards his books with preening self-referential pull-quotes. But the value is not in observing that Gitomer has an outsized ego, but in what he has to say. Even if not original to Gitomer, the concept of "The more you give value, the more you will get your way" is not only easy to understand, but inherently accurate.

Overall, Gitomer is fun to read and, frankly, inspiring. Kind of like that high-school coach you always wanted, but never had: someone who will shout in your ear "You can do it! Here's how!"

Editorial Review:

Why do advertising campaigns and new products often fail? Why do consumers feel that companies don't understand their needs? Because marketers themselves don't think deeply about consumers' innermost thoughts and feelings. Marketing Metaphoria is a groundbreaking book that reveals how to overcome this "depth deficit" and find the universal drivers of human behavior so vital to a firm's success.

Marketing Metaphoria reveals the powerful unconscious viewing lenses--called "deep metaphors"-- that shape what people think, hear, say, and do.

Drawing on thousands of one-on-one interviews in more than thirty countries, Gerald Zaltman and Lindsay Zaltman describe how some of the world's most successful companies as well as small firms, not-for-profits, and social enterprises have successfully leveraged deep metaphors to solve a wide variety of marketing problems. Marketing Metaphoria should convince you that everything consumers think and do is influenced at unconscious levels--and it will give you access to those deeper levels of thinking.

"An imaginative and insightful application of cognitive science to the world of business, rich with implications for both fields."

-Steven Pinker, Johnstone Family Professor, Department of Psychology, Harvard University, and author, How the Mind Works and The Stuff of Thought.

"Marketing Metaphoria is one of the most fascinating business books I have read in a long time. A brilliant combination of deep insight and actionable advice, it will forever change how you think about marketing."

-Daniel H. Pink, author, A Whole New Mind

"Despite the availability of increasingly sophisticated methods, most customer relationships remain standardized, superficial, and lacking in informed customization. Through deep metaphors, the Zaltmans provide an insightful and provocative framework for identifying and learning from the implicit cognitive influences on customer decision making that can enhance and deepen intimacy and loyalty."

-Gary W. Loveman, Chairman, CEO and President, Harrah's Entertainment, Inc.

"Any business seeking to build global brands should read the Zaltmans' groundbreaking work on metaphors. The universal power of deep metaphors crosses borders and generations, and enduring brands trade off this thinking, whether their owners know it or not."

-Tom Long, President and CEO, Miller Brewing Company

"A disruptive book that will change how you think about customer insights. The emotional power offered within these pages will energize you to dig deeper into your business and turn thin functional insights into rich emotional messages that will propel your business."

-Donna J. Sturgess, Global Head of Innovation, GlaxoSmithKline

"With the profound advances in psychology and neuroscience over the past two decades, I'm convinced that now is the time for practitioners to rewrite the 'principles of marketing.' Marketing Metaphoria transforms insights from the authors' research into a rich framework that will help you think more deeply about your consumers and develop more innovative ideas for action. Read it twice, then keep it on your desk for ready reference."

-Bob Woodard, Vice President, Global Consumer and Customer Insights, Campbell Soup Company

Uncle Harvey Sets Us Straight 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Wily ol' Harvey MacKay is a prototypical midwestern multimillionare. This means that even at his most Machiavellian, he comes across as a charming, down-to-earth folksy everyman - just the sort of person James Stewart used to play. This is Mr. MacKay's first book and it's well-worth reading for anybody who'd like to know more about why some people succeed in business while most fail. Some may dismiss many of Mr. MacKay's advice as merely 'common sense' but given that so many of us fall short of financial and personal success I doubt that the knowledge in here is all that common.

On the positive side, we have a successful business leader who stresses the importance of ethics, personal integrity, and steady hard work. I've rarely encountered a management or business-oriented author who stressed strength of character as much as Mr. MacKay does. He also tells personal anecdotes with a refreshing lack of swagger. This book may have first been written in the 1980s but Harvey MacKay does not reflect the Era of Greed at all. It's little wonder he's in demand as an inspirational public speaker, and that he still publishes a weekly advice/inspiration column.

Of course, in any book this old, there are bound to be dated sections and those are the only real negatives. Mr. MacKay's hiring practices (in which employees are visited and interviewed in their own homes so that he can learn more about their family values, yet in which no one calls to verify personal references) would raise a lot of eyebrows today. There's also an over-reliance on sports analogies. Other reviewers have noted this but I would like to add that Mr. MacKay's love of sports anecdotes reflects his age, because sports heroes and coaches of the past were not the money-driven free agents of today.

In sum, this would be a good graduation gift, or a welcome present for anyone beginning a job within the corporate world. Unlike many advice books, I left this one not only with good advice but also with a sense of who the author really was. And, I have to say, I enjoy Harvey MacKay a lot.

Editorial Review:

This straight-from-the-hip handbook by bestselling author and self-made millionaire Harvey Mackay spells out the path to success for readers everywhere. They will learn how to:

  • Outsell by getting appointments with people who absolutely, positively do not want to see you, and then making them glad they said "yes!"
  • Outmanage by arming yourself with information on prospects, customers, and competitors that the CIA would envy - using a system called the "Mackay 66."
  • Outmotivate by using his insights to help yourself or your kids join the ranks of Amercia's one million millionaires.
  • Outnegotiate by knowing when to "smile and say no" and when to "send in the clones."

This one-of-a-kind book by a businessman who's seen it all and done it all has sold almost 2 million copies, and is the essential roadmap for everyone on the path to success.

A front row seat into the world of high-stakes commercial real estate investing

“A must-read book … one of the best real estate investment books I have ever read. On my scale of 1 to 10, this unique book rates an off-the-charts 12.” ---Robert Bruss

Confessions of a Real Estate Entrepreneur is for the individual who is ready to get serious about investing. Not a rah-rah or get-rich-quick book, this book is for someone who is prepared to think about what he or she wants to accomplish. James Randel provides the how and why.

James Randel has been a successful investor and educator for 25 years. He teaches investing through stories and anecdotes – bringing to the limelight not just his successes (and there are some amazing stories of these) but also his mistakes. His candor is instructive and entertaining.

It is said that “those who can, do, and those who can’t, teach.” James Randel is a rare exception as he is both a highly successful investor as well as an excellent teacher. As said by Jeff Dunne, Vice Chairman of the largest real estate company in the world, CB Richard Ellis:

“I’ve tracked Jimmy’s incredible run of successful real estate investments for 20 years and more recently invested very profitably with him. His new book is a must read for anyone interested in real estate investing.”

If you are tired of the “same old, same old” and prepared to play in the big leagues, this book is calling your name.

Great Book for Sales Managers 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is great for those who have not read Now, Discover Your Strengths. There are some great statistics and ideas for sales managers, however, not too great for sales personnel. I would have liked to have seen more of a sales oriented spin on the interpretation strengthfinder assessment. It was the same interpretation as the assessment for Now, Discover Your Strengths.

Editorial Review:

In the ever-changing world of sales, there is no single, sure- fire, tried-and-true method that can be readily imitated by anyone to miraculously improve performance. In fact, the world's best salespeople are not characterized at all by their technique. But they do share one common trait: Successful sales reps use their individual aptitudes to succeed in their work environment. DISCOVER YOUR SALES STRENGTHS is an extraordinary program built upon the concept that every person already possesses the tools necessary to become an amazing salesperson. Grounded in extensive Gallup research conducted over 40 years and based on hundreds of thousands of interviews with sales managers, salesmen, and consumers, it teaches individuals to focus on personal strengths and talents, and then guides them to transform those assets into solid sales skills-and successful careers.

Editorial Review:

A world-renowned innovation guru explains practices that result in breakthrough innovations

. .

"Ulwick's outcome-driven programs bring discipline and predictability to the often random process of innovation."

.
-Clayton Christensen

. .

For years, companies have accepted the underlying principles that define the customer-driven paradigm--that is, using customer "requirements" to guide growth and innovation. But twenty years into this movement, breakthrough innovations are still rare, and most companies find that 50 to 90 percent of their innovation initiatives flop. The cost of these failures to U.S. companies alone is estimated to be well over $100 billion annually.

. .

In a book that challenges everything you have learned about being customer driven, internationally acclaimed innovation leader Anthony Ulwick reveals the secret weapon behind some of the most successful companies of recent years. Known as "outcome-driven" innovation, this revolutionary approach to new product and service creation transforms innovation from a nebulous art into a rigorous science from which randomness and uncertainty are eliminated.

. .

Based on more than 200 studies spanning more than seventy companies and twenty-five industries, Ulwick contends that, when it comes to innovation, the traditional methods companies use to communicate with customers are the root cause of chronic waste and missed opportunity. In What Customers Want, Ulwick demonstrates that all popular qualitative research methods yield well-intentioned but unfitting and dreadfully misleading information that serves to derail the innovation process. Rather than accepting customer inputs such as "needs," "benefits," "specifications," and "solutions," Ulwick argues that researchers should silence the literal "voice of the customer" and focus on the "metrics that customers use to measure success when executing the jobs, tasks or activities they are trying to get done." Using these customer desired outcomes as inputs into the innovation process eliminates much of the chaos and variability that typically derails innovation initiatives.

. With the same profound insight, simplicity, and uncommon sense that propelled The Innovator's Solution to worldwide acclaim, this paradigm-changing book details an eight-step approach that uses outcome-driven thinking to dramatically improve every aspect of the innovation process--from segmenting markets and identifying opportunities to creating, evaluating, and positioning breakthrough concepts. Using case studies from Microsoft, Johnson And Johnson, AIG, Pfizer, and other leading companies, What Customers Want shows companies how to:

.
    .
  • Obtain unique customer inputs that make predictable innovation possible .
  • Recognize opportunities for disruption, new market creation, and core market growth--well before competitors do .
  • Identify which ideas, technologies, and acquisitions have the greatest potential for creating customer value .
  • Systematically define breakthrough products and services concepts .
. .

Innovation is fundamental to success and business growth. Offering a proven alternative to failed customer-driven thinking, this landmark book arms you with the tools to unleash innovation, lower costs, and reduce failure rates--and create the products and services customers really want.

Bosworth is a proven sales performer, trainer, and leader 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Over the decades I've had the chance to work with the author at an early high tech company where he led the internal sales training classes. Later he become a consultant training some of today's largest high tech sales organizations in the world. Mike's always had tough, high standards. His ability to create a repeatable process to selling intangible products to complex organizations has led many of his pupils to excel. Many of them are now SVPs of Sales or CEOs and would be names you recognize.

But, as another reviewer says, you have to use the methodology. Reading the book is just the start.

Great approach to selling, but must focuses on long sale cycle 4 out of 5 stars.

Great approach to selling, but must focuses on long sale cycle and does not pertain to all selling

The Step-by-Step Guide for Selling Solutions 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Solution Selling is the first book that exposed me to the world of complex, intangible and solution (vs. product) selling.

I had wanted to title this review as "The Idiot's Guide to Selling Solutions" BUT found that even though the instructions in the book literally takes a novice in sales through the process of selling complex solutions in a very straightforward manner, there STILL needs to be some thinking required by the sales person to profit from the knowledge within.

Solution Selling is the comprehensive guide for novice to learn the ropes, and a good reference book for seasoned sales pros as well. It is also a useful tool for sales managers to manage the pipelines of their teams too!

Editorial Review:

``Solution Selling is the most comprehensive sales and sales management process available today. Mike Bosworth has the best understanding of sales process in corporate America.''Jeffrey M. Fisher, Vice President, Symix Computer Systems.

In his best-selling book, BrandSimple: How the Best Brands Keep it Simple and Succeed, Allen P. Adamson showed in a straightforward manner how powerful brands get built. In a similarly engaging style, BrandDigital explains that in the quickly accelerating digital marketplace the basic principles of branding have not changed, but rather, are more important than ever. He clearly demonstrates that brand professionals have an unprecedented opportunity to use digital tools and media to learn more about their customers and offer experiences that better reinforce customer relationships – and build brand equity.

Based on over 100 interviews with top branding professionals, Adamson makes his point with case studies from companies including Ameriprise, Burger King, General Mills, Hewlett-Packard, Johnson & Johnson, Nike, PepsiCo, and Procter & Gamble. He provides numerous examples of why, particularly in the digital arena, it’s never been more important to gain significant insights about consumers; to establish a simple, compelling, and credible brand promise; and to make good on this promise. Along with putting into proper context the role Google, YouTube, Second Life, social media, and blogs play in the branding process, Adamson shows how the best companies are taking advantage of evolving digital technology to build stronger brands and stronger bonds with their customers.
