I purchased this book because I am interested in starting my own Freight Brokerage Business. In order to start your own brokerage company you "must" already know how to broker freight. What I am looking for is detailed information about where to start and everything that is needed to startup. This book just gives a "very simple" explanation about how you broker freight. This was a total waste of my money!!!! I have been in the trucking business for 21 yrs and have brokered freight for about 8 years so I already know in general what needs to be done. I need a book that is much much more informative about HOW TO START A FREIGHT BROKERAGE!!!

Editorial Review:

Freight brokerage is an easy-to-start, profitable business. It's even easier with these helpful hints on market research, choosing a location, financing, finding customers, hiring employees, and more. This edition includes updated information, additional resources, and current contact information.

Editorial Review:

In Getting the Goods, Edna Bonacich and Jake B. Wilson focus on the Southern California ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach--which together receive 40 percent of the nearly $2 trillion worth of goods imported annually to the United States--to examine the impact of the logistics revolution on workers in transportation and distribution. Built around the invention of shipping containers and communications technology, the logistics revolution has enabled giant retailers like Wal-Mart and Target to sell cheap consumer products made using low-wage labor in developing countries. The goods are shipped through an efficient, low-cost, intermodal freight system, in which containers are moved from factories in Asia to distribution centers across the United States without ever being opened.

Bonacich and Wilson follow the flow of imports from Asian factories, exploring the roles of importers, container shipping companies, the ports, railroad and trucking companies, and warehouses. At each stage, Getting the Goods raises important questions about how the logistics revolution affects logistics workers. Drawing extensively on interviews with workers and managers at all levels of the supply chain, on industry reports, and on economic data, Bonacich and Wilson find that, in general, conditions have deteriorated for workers. But they also discover that changes in the system of production and distribution provide new strategic opportunities for labor to gain power. A much-needed corrective to both uncritical celebrations of containerization and the global economy and pessimistic predictions about the future of the U.S. labor movement, Getting the Goods will become required reading for scholars and students in sociology, political economy, and labor studies.

Fascinating read; another good job by author 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book covers the history of the railroad to California, but with a special emphasis and focus on the wheelings and dealings of the railroad barons/masterminds who pulled it off. Sometimes through means (stock fraud, etc) that look pretty shady in retrospect. If you find this aspect of interest, this is the book. The author has written previously about charlatans and frauds who left little behind (see his delightful "Drake's Fortune" book). Here, to the extent the railroad barons were shysters, they also created a longstanding, monumental feat of engineering with vast economic benefits and consequences. In this, lies the tale.

Editorial Review:

A true-life tale of ruthless ambition, staggering greed, and the making of a nation.

One hundred forty years ago, four men rose from their position as middle-class merchants in Sacramento, California, to become the force behind the transcontinental railroad. In the course of doing so, they became wealthy beyond any measure—and to sustain their power, they lied, bribed, wheedled, and, when necessary, arranged for obstacles, both human and legal, to disappear. Their names were Collis Huntington, Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker, and Mark Hopkins, and they were known as "The Big Four" or "The Associates." Their drive for money—nothing more, nothing less—was epic. Their legacy is a university, public gardens, museums, mansions, banks, and libraries--and to a large degree California itself, a state that even today owes its aura of "can-do" and limitless possibilities to The Associates.

A great disappointment 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Others have made the points well. This book takes an excellent, interesting subject and makes a hash of it. It is erratically written and poorly edited. There are some interesting passages, but they are interspersed with long segments of the authors undocumented assertions and broad generalizations. The analysis is superficial and unsystematic. I had hoped for something along the lines of the excellent "747: Creating the World's First Jumbo Jet and Other Adventures from a Life in Aviation" by Joe Sutter, but was sorely disappointed. There is rich material here, but sadly it is poorly edited and executed.

Editorial Review:

The commercial airline industry is one of the most volatile, dog-eat-dog enterprises in the world, and in the late 1990s, Europe’s Airbus overtook America’s Boeing as the preeminent aircraft manufacturer. However, Airbus quickly succumbed to the same complacency it once challenged, and Boeing regained its precarious place on top. Now, after years of heated battle and mismanagement, both companies face the challenge of serving burgeoning Asian markets and stiff competition from China and Japan. Combining insider knowledge with vivid prose and insight, John Newhouse delivers a riveting story of these two titans of the sky and their struggles to stay in the air.

Editorial Review:

A saga about one of the oldest and most romantic enterprises in the land - America's railroads - "The Men Who Loved Trains" introduces some of the most dynamic businessmen in America. Here are the chieftains who have run the railroads, including those who set about grabbing power and big salaries for themselves, and others who truly loved the industry. As a journalist and associate editor of "Fortune" magazine who covered the demise of Penn Central and the creation of Conrail, Rush Loving often had a front row seat to the foibles and follies of this group of men. He uncovers intrigue, greed, lust for power, boardroom battles, and takeover wars and turns them into a page-turning story for readers. Included is the story of how the chairman of CSX Corporation, who later became George W. Bush's Treasury secretary, was inept as a manager but managed to make millions for himself while his company drifted in chaos. Men such as he were shy of scruples, yet there were also those who loved trains and railroading, and who played key roles in reshaping transportation in the northeastern United States. This book will delight not only the rail fan, but anyone interested in American business and history.

Great Marketing Tool For Any Career 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

When I picked up Gunn Sights, I did so in good faith that I wouldn't have to know the ins and outs of the aerospace sales industry to enjoy it, and I was right. I didn't expect that I would become engrossed in the high-stakes world of international aerospace--but I did. Although the products Gunn works with are worth millions--and sometimes billions--of dollars, his simplified eight tenants of selling would be able to encourage and revitalize any salesperson or marketer. Gunn exemplifies his steps through various case studies, making his lessons realistic and applicable to any business, not just aerospace sales. Furthermore, his writing style is frank and to-the-point without being dry; many personal anecdotes make him seem more human and less of the selling machine he actually was.

Needless to say, this is still a great book for anyone in the aerospace industry. Whether you buy, sell, manufacture, design, or simply enjoy planes, helicopters, missiles, etc., Gunn Sights provides in-depth information on the inner workings of McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) and exemplifies the struggles the company faced and overcame.

And, in addition to being a book about the business of selling, Gunn Sights provides very interesting information about international sales: proper etiquette, handling competition, and (my personal favorite) espionage. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in sales, marketing how-tos, the aerospace industry, or St. Louis' local business. You won't be disappointed.

Editorial Review:

Tom Gunn had a life-altering career change in 1975 when he went from an eight-year stint as staff lawyer with the U.S. Senate to a job in aerospace sales and marketing at McDonnell Douglas. He knew a lot about military appropriations and classified developments, but almost nothing about marketing. Over the next twenty-two years, however, Gunn and the team he assembled developed a process for strategic selling and marketing that delivered $250 billion in sales of military and commercial aircraft, missiles, space systems, and logistic support against strong and at times cutthroat domestic and international competition. His book is both the story of that success and a handbook for anyone who wants to learn about high-powered selling, about assessing the competition and understanding the customer, and about using a defined process to shape strategic planning.

Transportation Textbook 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a textbook provides good balance between transportation history and up-to-date transportation industry information. The case studies are well-written, reinforcing and complimenting what is presented in each chapter. Worth every penny.

Editing 3 out of 5 stars.

Purchased this book for instruction in entry level Transportation Course, to which it seems basically well suited. The book however suffers from chronic poor editing of the charts and graphs, poor layout of some charts, such as the motor carrier unit cost chart, and the chart detailing the quantities of foodstuffs consumed in New York. I would let this go if it occurs once, but lack of quality control in these areas comes through more than that. A good entry level text with good scope. I will have to fill in the gaps to assure understanding.

Editorial Review:

Transportation service isn't as simple as you think. TRANSPORTATION goes in-depth and explains the fundamental role that transportation plays in our society. By looking at both domestic and international transportation systems, as well as their legal issues, you'll get a thorough, easy-to-understand overview. Plus, TRANSPORTATION gives you the tools you need to succeed in this fast-paced and rapidly changing industry. In class or on the road, TRANSPORTATION gives you the edge.

Americans We All Admire 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Finally the Americans we (foreigners) have all admired in the past, are coming back to life. This book is a well written "easy read", about American entrepreneurs doing what Americans do best ... inspire the rest of us with new exciting things e.g. (almost) affordable space flight for all.
It doesn't get too bogged down in technicalities, but gives you a nice insiders view of these small companies and the people in them.
Read this book to give you inspiration or just to cheer yourself up ... after watching the latest TV newsreal about the latest multi-million dollar "precision guided munitions" destroying some simple schmucks in a cave in who-knows-where ...

Editorial Review:

On June 21, 2004, SpaceShipOne, built by aircraft designer Burt Rutan, entered space and ushered in the commercial space age. Investment capital began to pour into the new commercial spaceflight industry. Richard Branson's VirginGalactic will begin ferrying space tourists out of the atmosphere in 2010. Las Vegas hotelier Robert Bigelow is developing the world's first commercial space station (i.e., space hotel). These space entrepreneurs, including Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen and Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, now see space as the next big thing.

In Rocketeers, Michael Belfiore goes behind the scenes of this nascent industry, capturing its wild-west, anything-goes flavor. Likening his research to "hanging out in the Wright brothers' barn," Belfiore offers an inspiring and entertaining look at the people who are not afraid to make their bold dreams a reality.

Helpful Book. 4 out of 5 stars.

This book gives a lot of information that you need to operate a trucking business. Gives detailed instructions for DOT compliance. Good book.

Editorial Review:

This handbook of transportation industry rules and regulations will arm professional drivers with the knowledge they need to avoid penalties and infractions when driving coast-to-coast and state-to-state. Trucking Rules and Regulations: A Reference Guide to Transportation teaches variations in interstate laws for the education and preparation of drivers for over-the-road duty. It is written in a user-friendly style that provides explanations for many of the issues and terms relative and specific to local, state, and federal traffic policies in each of the 50 states including Hawaii and Alaska. Coverage has been compiled from numerous sources and includes regulations from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association, making this book an essential reference for carriers and interstate truckers alike.
