The title for the book is too much for what you can find inside. They cared much more about the definitions than the actions. It's not really a "guide" when you can't find in few words what are you looking for.

Editorial Review:

A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)—2000 Edition is now available in eight additional languages to help project managers around the world.

Each of PMI's official translations includes a bilingual glossary of newly translated and standardized project management terminology. This allows candidates to study the guide in the same language in which they plan to take the Project Management Professional (PMP®) certification exam.

PMI undertook a rigorous, year-long process to ensure the maximum effectiveness of each official translation. Each translation team included qualified bilingual PMPs as well as professional translators and editors.

Official translations: Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Korean, German and Italian.

Editorial Review:

Contemporary Management by Jones and George distinguishes itself through its authorship, comprehensive, current contents, rich and relevant examples and applications and experiential exercises provided in every single chapter. The cutting-edge 5th Edition continues to redefine what principles of management texts should look, sound, and feel like. As an author team Gareth Jones and Jennifer George are uniquely qualified to write about both the strategic and organizational challenges managers face. Contemporary Management is a comprehensive text that surveys the theoretical underpinnings of modern management thought and research. Through a variety of examples from small, medium, and large companies it shows the reader how those ideas are used by practicing managers. A hallmark of this text is its focus on the "Manager as a Person," which discusses managers as real people with their own personalities, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and problems.

I passed the PMP on my first try today. I bought Andy's book (The PMP Exam - How to Pass on Your First Try), the PMBOK Guide, and Rita Mulcahy's PMP Examp Prep. I studied in the order of PMP Guide first, Andy's book second, and then Rita's third. Although Rita's book gave a few different perspectives, it wasn't really necessary to buy it. You can pass the PMP with the PMP Guide and Andy's book. It's a wonderful resource. Make flash cards, they work great!

Not very good 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is quite bad. You can tell it is the ninth edition because the material does not flow or build upon itself, it contradicts itself from section to section, and fails to use the same terminology from one section to the next. The questions at the end of the chapters often have nothing to do with the content in the chapter and sometimes even refer to non-existent figures or charts, which further leads me to believe that this book suffers from bad editing. Finally, there are literally thousands upon thousands of bullet points in this book (it reminds me of one big boring PowerPoint presentation), so it is really tedius to read. In fact this book put me to sleep more often than not, so if you suffer from insomnia, this might be just what you need.

Editorial Review:

This Ninth Edition of the industry-leading project management “bible” applies its streamlined approach to new, authoritative coverage aligned with the Project Management Institute’s Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMI’s PMBOK), the new mandatory source of training for the Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification Exam. Written by one of the best-known authorities on the subject, this extraordinary edition gives a profound understanding of project management.

Simplicity at its long-winded extreme 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is essentially a 4-5 page instruction manual to go along with a reporting spreadsheet, which has been stretched out to a 129 page book using large font, small pages, lots of white space, and repetitive figures/screen shots. The tool itself makes some sense as a nice concise report format, but the book goes on and on puffing up its abilities and the author's creativity. Some 20 or so pages are filled up by showing the sheet with a section empty, and then full; empty, and then full, as if the user (having already been told where to put info and seen screen shots of the sections in question) can't figure out how to fill in the blanks.

I found disconcerting that the image on the cover is a "modified" version of the tool they're describing, undermining the claim that this tool is well-suited for any project. If that's the case, why wouldn't they feature the basic form on the cover, rather than a customized version?

It seems like the tool could be useful to improve communication and management of projects, but the communication discussed is primarily bottom-up. The book barely touches upon how it can be used for top-down communication or how to use this to work with areas that are falling behind or going over budget. So, it's not really so much a "manager" as a "status report".

If you're looking for a simple read and a simple tool for tracking your team's progress, check this out of a library. It's not worth the money to actually buy a copy. If you're hoping to actually learn some useful project management skills, look elsewhere.

Editorial Review:

The One-Page Project Manager shows you how to boil down any project into a simple, one-page document that can be used to communicate all essential details to upper management, other departments, suppliers, and audiences. This practical guide will save time and effort, helping you identify the vital parts of a project and communicate those parts and duties to other team members.

Media Reviews
  • "I have been doing project management for over 30 years and am considered a subject matter expert in the PMBOK(r) Guide -Third Edition primarily because I am the Project Manager who led the team that developed this edition. As a consultant I was hired to review and evaluate eight of the top selling PMP Exam Preparation books for their accuracy in following the PMBOK® Guide - Third Edition. I have developed and taught a PMP Exam Prep course for a leading R.E.P., and taught PMP Exam preparation classes for PMI Chapters. I can honestly say that Head First PMP is by far the best PMP Exam Preparation book of all I have reviewed in depth. It is the very best basic education and training book that I have read that presents the processes for managing a project, which makes it a great resource for a basic project management class for beginners as well as a tool for practitioners who want to pass the PMP exam. The graphical story format is unique, as project management books go, which makes it both fun and easy to read while driving home the basics that are necessary for preparing someone is just getting started and those who want to take the exam."
    --Dennis Bolles, PMP DLB Associates, LLC and co-author of The Power of Enterprise-Wide Project Management

  • "This looks like too much fun to be a PMP study guide! Behind the quirky humor and nutty graphics lies an excellent explanation of the project management processes. Not only will this book make it easier to pass the exam, you'll learn a lot of good stuff to use on the job too."
    --Carol Steuer, PMP and PMBOK(r) Guide, 3rd Edition Leadership Team

  • "This is the best thing to happen to PMP since, well, ever. You'll laugh, learn, pass the exam, and become a better project manager all at the same time."
    -- Scott Berkun, author of The Art of Project Management and The Myths of Innovation

  • "Original, fresh, and fun... this is truly the perfect study companion for anyone aiming for PMP certification."
    --Teresa Simmermacher, PMP and Project Manager at Avanade

  • "I love this format! Head First PMP covers everything you need to know to pass your PMP exam. The sound-bite format combined with the whimsical images turns a dry subject into entertainment. The organization starts with the basics then drills into the details. The in-depth coverage of complex topics like Earned Value and Quality Control are presented in an easy to understand format with descriptions, pictures, and examples. This book will not only help you pass the PMP, it should be used as an daily reference for practicing project managers. I sure wish I had this when I was studying for the exam."
    --Mike Jenkins, PMP, MBA

  • "I think that under the fonts and formalized goofiness, the book has a good heart (intending to cover basic principles in an honest way rather than just to pass the test). Head First PMP attempts to educate potential project managers instead of being a mere "how to pass the PMP exam" book filled with test taking tips. This is truly something which sets it apart from the other PMP certification exam books."
    --Jack Dahlgren, Project Management Consultant

  • "Head First PMP is a great tool to help make sense of the Project Management Body of Knowledge for the everyday Project Manager."
    --Mark Poinelli, PMP

About the Book

A PMP certification is more than just passing a test. It means that you have the knowledge to solve most common project problems, and proves that you know your stuff. Once you're certified, your projects are more likely to succeed because you have the skills and knowledge to make them successful. Not only that, it can mean a better job, more money, and greater respect from your peers.

But studying for a difficult four-hour exam on project management isn't easy, even for experienced project managers. You want to remember everything that you're learning about project management, but your brain is working against you! Your brain craves novelty, and most PMP certification prep books are anything but novel. When you keep putting down a boring book instead of studying, it's because your brain doesn't think the information in it is worth learning. Your brain has more important stuff to think about, like how to keep you alive and out of danger-and it doesn't think that failing the PMP exam qualifies as life-threatening!

So how do you trick your brain into thinking that your life does depend on learning everything you need to know to pass the PMP Exam? Head First PMP is the answer! Using the latest research in neurobiology, cognitive science and learning theory, Head First PMP has a visually rich format designed for the way your brain works-a multi-sensory experience that helps the material stick, not a text-heavy approach that puts you to sleep.

Head First PMP offers 100% coverage of The PMBOK® Guide principles and certification objectives in a way that's engaging, not tedious. This book helps you prepare for the PMP certification exam with a unique method that goes beyond answers to specific questions and makes you think about the big picture of project management. By putting project management concepts into context, you will be able to understand, remember, and apply them-not just on the exam, but also on the job.

With Head First PMP, you get the best of both worlds: a thorough and effective preparation guide for the PMP certification exam with hundreds of practice questions and exam strategies, along with puzzles, games, problems, exercises and the unique Head First approach that makes learning easy and entertaining. When you're done with Head First PMP, you'll know your stuff, you'll pass the exam, and you'll be able to bring everything you've learned to your job.

Editorial Review:

Until the early '90s, project management was definitely located somewhere near the unsexy end of the business spectrum. But now, with the rise of downsizing and outsourcing, it has become one of the hot disciplines. Professional membership of the U.S.-based Project Management Institute has quadrupled in the last decade, and Microsoft claimed recently to have over 2 million users worldwide of its project-management software. The reasons for this growth are simple. Project management is about managing "projects," that is, unique pieces of work (as opposed to ongoing operations). Downsizing, outsourcing, and the accelerating pace of change have meant that, increasingly, work is carried out on an ad-hoc, one-off project basis. The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management is designed as an advanced textbook for businesspeople with a grasp of the basics and insufficient time (or inclination) to go back to school to learn more. Written by Eric Verzuh, president of the Versatile Company, a leading project-management consultancy, this is not a heavy academic text.

Like the rest of the Fast Forward series, this book is designed to let the reader extract maximum information in minimum time. There is a strong use of graphics with tables, charts cross-heads, and bullet points. Important passages are flagged in bold and/or emblazoned with the words key concept. When you read it, you realize that there is nothing magical about project management, just the application of careful common sense. The book covers all the basic stuff like planning, time-tabling, quantity and price estimation, resource allocation, and scheduling. But it also acknowledges that there is inevitably a political dimension to every project, no matter how small. So it has important sections on how to ensure that all the stakeholders in the project are kept "on board" and the importance of communication.

As Verzuh states in his introduction, "Every project participant from part-time team member to executive sponsor, becomes more effective once he or she understands the basics of project management." Really, this is a book about management that every manager should read, whether he or she has a project or not. --Alex Benady

Know how to respond when things don't fall into place.

Skydiving has its inherent risks. Even though a professional team, like the one depicted on the cover, can make skydiving seem perfectly choreographed; there are always uncertainties. Whether it's getting a skydiving team into the air or a new product off the ground, no project has ever been completed exactly as planned.

With Meredith and Mantel's Sixth Edition, you'll not only learn how to select, initiate, operate, and control all types of projects; you'll also learn how to manage risks and uncertainties. Written from a managerial perspective, the text equips you with the quantitative skills, knowledge of organizational issues, and insights into human behavior that you need to do project management effectively.

Updated and revised, this edition features current coverage of topics such as:
* Risk management
* Lifecycle costing
* Real options
* Organizational process assets
* Non-technical project terminations
* The phase/quality-gate process
* Requirements formulation analysis

Free trial version of Microsoft Project(r) and Crystal Ball(r)

This text includes a CD-ROM containing a 120-day trial version of Microsoft Project(r) and a student version of Crystal Ball(r). Microsoft Project and Crystal Ball screenshots appear where relevant throughout the text. Additionally, a number of end-of-chapter exercises encourage you to apply these computer software packages to project management problems.
