Excellent content, deeply flawed concept 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I bought this because I have and like Gottesdiner's "Requirements by Collaboration." The idea of the "Memory Jogger" was very appealing. That is, my requirement was to have quick access to the essential requirements of the requirements process that I could use as a content and quality sanity check throughout the development project life cycle.

What "Memory Jogger" delivered was a good basic text on the requirements process presented in a virtually unusable format.

The rationale behind the "pocket-sized" format is beyond me. This will not fit into my pocket. I'm already carrying a laptop, a project binder (or two) and probably a flip chart; one more reasonably-sized book isn't going to make much difference in what I'm lugging around. Indeed, its size, shape, and weight guarantee that the "Memory Jogger" will either constantly slip from the stack I'm carrying around or get buried under the stacks on my desk.

The more serious problem with the format is that the type is too small. In attempting to fold a reasonably complete text on requirements into the inappropriate format, the publisher has reduced point size as well as cramped character spacing. In some sections the spacing between words has been reduced to the extent that the text is virtually unreadable.

An additional issue with the small page format is that most sentences are wrapped around multiple lines - one example that I'm looking at right now runs to five lines, making it hard to read and comprehend. Multi-column tables are obviously even worse. Let me emphasize that this is not because the content is verbose or poorly written; it's because of the constraints of the format.

The reviewer who was looking for flip charts or fold-outs is on the right track. I would also suggest that a more extensive use of color would have been useful, say by tipping the pages of each section in a different color. This would be a nice, fast visual indicator - one could flip quickly to the green section or the purple section as one needed.

If, like me, you are looking for a light intro to the art of Project Management then you need not look further. This book will give you an overview of the tools and methods that will help you on the path to successfully delivering projects. But what I also liked about it is that it emphasises the need for leadership and interpersonal skills and provides a few tips on these. Definitely a 'must' for starting off any Project Management library.

The updated and revised third edition provides an unparalleled introduction to project management, along with new tools and techniques for planning and executing projects on time, on budget, and with maximum efficiency and productivity.

Lots of insight 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

If Tom Sawyer had used this book, his friends would have done a far more than just whitewash a fence.

"Results without Authority" is just what most project people need to be successful. Projects where you control everyone are almost nonexistent. I have done project work for over a decade and this book was very helpful. The book contained so many insights that I used it as the basis for a 2 hour training session with my consulting group.

This stuff works! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This stuff works! "Results without Authority" is a powerful source of tools and common sense advice for people managing projects without formal authority. And most of the projects I have managed and most of the projects I am aware of are managed by people without authority. Tom Kendrick brings a depth of wisdom that can only be learned in the trenches.

Kendrick weaves theory and practice to build a comprehensive set of tools, templates, and checklists that can be used by everyone from the newly appointed project manager to the steely veteran. This volume is the most practical, down-to-earth, treatment of managing without authority that I have ever read. And, it is a good read and an enjoyable read. "Results Without Authority" must be required reading for all project managers, whether they have authority or not. Read it today and start using it tomorrow.

Editorial Review:

"Results Without Authority" explores a wide range of effective methods and tools project leaders can use when they have little or no formal authority over members of the project team. The book includes clear, insightful examples that demonstrate how to get exceptional results on any project, regardless of "who's the boss."

Execellent Resource 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent resource that will help you understand and review several concepts in the PMBOK Guide. The only problem is that the answers provide quotes from the PMBOK Guide and no explanations. The questions are simplistic: may be good for the CAPM exam, but not for the PMP exam.
To prepare for the PMP Exam, I used the PMP Exam Quicklet by Paul Sanghera, which contains very realistic questions.

Excellent quiz reference 4 out of 5 stars.

I will be taking my exam the first weekend in April and I feel that this book is an excellent tool to help you prepare. One of my co-workers who just took her exam said she saw 2 questions from the book on her actual exam. She passed and I am confident that I will pass also.

you wont regret it 5 out of 5 stars.

Just buy it - you wont regret it. :)

It's full of multiple choice questions. I use it as a summary, self assessment tool in conjunction with my PMBoK.

Excellent resource to reinforce PMI Knowledgebase 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book provides some excellent Project Management questions with detailed explanation of the right AND wrong answers following PMBOK book. This material will help reinforce the right PMI methodology and best practices.

This book is a valuable tool for preparing for the PMP exam. While the actual questions are atypical of the actual PMP Certification Exam, this book provides a great opportunity to reinforce learnings from the PMI's PMBOK Guide. The book is set up and laid out by each corresponding chapter making in it easy to navigate and use as a reference later for exam preparation.

The CAPM Exam - How to Pass on Your First Try 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I passed on the first try as the title suggests. Much of the credit is due this book. There was no need for an expensive week long crash course. I am very pleased with the purchase. I think the book might have missed the mark on how much attention to give to the Communications Management process as I scored "Below Proficent" in this area. However, I did well in all of the other areas. Obviously, I would recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

Designed for project managers looking to add the Project Management Institute’s (PMI) Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification to their resume, this guidebook presents everything needed to pass the exam—from glossaries of terms and definitions to professional testing advice. Test preparation topics, including complete explanations of all CAPM subjects, are accompanied by a breakdown of the processes, inputs, outputs, and techniques associated with this PMI certification. A final chapter packed with sample test questions is also included.
