excellent reference for beginners and those needing a refresher 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This book is concise and has many of the key ideas that beginning SAS programmers need. It is a good reference even for advanced SAS programmers but does not go far beyond the basics. If you use SAS regularly this will not have enough information for you. However, it is the quickest way to find out how to do something basic that you either have never done or forgot how to do. I only have the 2nd edition, so I can't comment on any changes that may be incorporated in the third edition.

Editorial Review:

Getting started with SAS is easy with The Little SAS Book. This friendly, easy-to-read guide gently introduces you to the most commonly used features of SAS software plus a whole lot more! The book has been revised to include concepts of the Output Delivery System; the STYLE= option in the PRINT, REPORT, and TABULATE procedures; ODS HTML, RTF, PRINTER, and OUTPUT destinations; PROC REPORT; more on PROC TABULATE; exporting data; and the colon modifier for informats. You'll find clear and concise explanations of basic SAS concepts (such as DATA and PROC steps), inputting data, modifying and combining data sets, summarizing and presenting data, basic statistical procedures, and debugging SAS programs. Each topic is presented in a self-contained, two-page layout complete with examples and graphics. This format enables new users to get up and running quickly, while the examples allow you to type in the program and see it work!

A good honest book about statistics 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

First.. when I thought of taking stats.. I thought of boredom, bunch of boring data to process

but this book is not at all that. It s approach and explanation is pretty understandable & user friendly to use. After reading I began to know how to understand and process data/statistic.

The problems for each chapter is not a lot! which I like. But there are reasonable amount of practice problems at least 30# per chapter, which I think is sensible and realistic for college students.

Editorial Review:

KEY MESSAGE: Intro Stats, Third Edition, continues and extends the successful innovations pioneered in the DeVeaux/Velleman/Bock books, teaching statistics and statistical thinking for today's readers. This book uses a fun, conversational writing style, real data, and short, accessible chapters. The consistent Think/Show/Tell model for worked examples reinforces thinking about how to approach a statistics problem, showing how to solve it, and reporting the conclusion in the context of the problem.

KEY TOPICS: Exploring and Understanding Data; Exploring Relationships between Variables; Gathering Data; Randomness and Probability; From the Data at Hand to the World At Large; Learning about the World; Inference When Variables are Related

MARKET: For all readers interested in Statistics.

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This is really a great book. I don't think I would have made it through stats without it!

Step-By-Step Guide 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent product... Without it I would have been lost interpreting findings after using the SSP 14.0 statistical program. arrived in excellent condition. Only issue, arrived later than I expected, having paid for expedited delivery.

Good Only for Review 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a good book if you have already taken a intermediate bio stats course.

It is good for review.

But this is not a textbook & suffers from all the pitfalls of "Industry Learning Books", it is not real explanatory & does not give the answers to problems assigned in the book. I always hated this, how am I supposed to know for sure, if I have the right answer?

These types of books seem too cheap, to spend more money on an extra half page of text (or less actually), explaining the answers to a problem.

I don't know why, & I would spend more money on purchase for this. But this is a theme all these industry books have, & it degrades them from textbook quality.

Statistics for Dummies - Like Making a Word Salad 2 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

The "For Dummies" series are funny books and are sometimes helpful but, much like Sparknotes or Cliffnotes, they are inherently flawed. This is ESPECIALLY true for anything that has to do with computerization; if you really need to earn something then you really need a book that will teach you a solid way to generate results. In the case of SPSS I really thinks this is true and then some - the program gives you all sorts of ways to test and to generate answers BUT the word dummies doesn't really play here.
If anything, it seems criminal to tell people they can learn something without hammering away at it.

A few of my students have used this book and the truth of the matter is this: they learn the most basic functions of the program but, when asked to perform something a little more difficult, they freeze and their eyes frost. The book doesn't add in the terminology needed, doesn't cover the ideas behind concepts, and doesn't even cover the stuff an introduction class would.
If you need help and need it badly, this would set you back and confuse you even more. Instead, you could buy a SPSS Basics book to grasp the immediate, look into an Experimental Design class to learn what SPSS is attempting (you can look online and see what classes require, then mirror the class without taking it if you can't afford the time), or you could consult the program and the book that accompanies it. Either way, this is not progression but the illusion of progression and you can tell that by reading exactly what it promises to teach you.
Very bad primed.

Editorial Review:

  • SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) is a data management and analysis software that allows users to generate solid, decision-making results by performing statistical analysis
  • This book provides just the information needed: installing the software, entering data, setting up calculations, and analyzing data
  • Covers computing cross tabulation, frequencies, descriptive ratios, means, bivariate and partial correlations, linear regression, and much more
  • Explains how to output information into striking charts and graphs
  • For ambitious users, also covers how to program SPSS to take their statistical analysis to the next level

comprehensive introduction to SPSS 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

SPSS is quite a powerful statistical package. If you have never used it, or any other stats package for that matter, then George and Mallery offer a comprehensive introduction to both SPSS and statistics.

The book emphasises what you can do at the graphical level, with the SPSS user interface. Myriad screen captures of menu options, panels and the like. These are given in the context of many tasks that you can do. You should also look at the graphing capabilities. In statistics, visualisation is often necessary, in order to understand the data.

As far as statistical theory goes, what is here is really a summary. There is no attempt at proving theorems, for example. But where SPSS shines is in making easily available lots of functions that can be applied to your data. Quicker than you having to code this in some other language.

The book does not touch on more advanced and specialised packages available within SPSS. For these, you might look up Norusis' texts. She has written several that are definitive expositions. Another possibility is to look up Using SPSS for Windows and Macintosh: Analyzing and Understanding Data (5th Edition). The presentation in the latter is somewhat like this book, but a little more advanced.
