The high, clear call of the Spirit in a deadly quiet world. 5 out of 5 stars.
33 of 34 people found this review helpful.

"I believe we are under positive spiritual obligation to pray effectively till the present veil is torn away and the face of God is seen again by believing men," Tozer writes.

There is an irony that A.W. Tozer is more prolific and widely-read today than when he was alive. How I wish I could sit at his elbow and ask him about today's events, the future of the church, the coming King...In some ways, he answers those questions in "Keys to the Deeper Life."

Smith Wigglesworth once referred to the gifts of salvation, baptism of the Holy Spirit, and the deeper life as "Good, better, best." I think Tozer would agree.

Never afraid to speak truth, the first chapter sets the tone for the enitre book: "Leaning into the wind". Just like him. Eschewing the hypocritical, the false glory found in man's praise, and the shallow life, Tozer puts the trumpet to his lips to issue a clear call of the Spirit, to engage God at a deeper level. He urges believers to "1.)surrender, 2.)ask, 3.) obey, and 4.)believe in order to recieve the fullness of God, the Holy Spirit.

In the chapter, "Touching Heaven in Prayer", Tozer writes:
"What then shall we do?
We must deny self, take up the cross and count ourselves expendable.
We must cease to exercise the world's judgements and try to think God's thoughts after Him.
We must rekon ourselves dead to gain and glory and allow ourselves to become inextricably invloved with the cross of Christ and the high honor of God."

Putting God first and ourselves dead last.
What a concept.
Sounds like Christ.

Editorial Review:

In this revised and expanded collection of Tozer's most popular essays readers will discover the way to a vital, personal Christianity as they read commentary on revival, renewal, and much more.

Simply Magnificent 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This volume contains essays revolving around GK's conversion to Catholicism. As always, GK is illuminating and entertaining--several parts of these essays had me laughing out loud. GK has a marvelous talent for utterly dismantling an argument, an attitude, or a belief, while remaining so good natured about it that even his intellectual enemies must have liked him at least a little. Here, he mainly takes on Protestantism, modernism, secularism, Liberalism, and several other "isms" of the day that challenged the Catholic Church--some of which at one time or another had even attracted GK himself. In the end, he makes as convincing an argument for Catholicism that anyone could make. In the process, he throws much light on many political and social trends that were just gearing up in the 1920's, like birth control, divorce, moral relativism and secular humanism. GK offers grave predictions for these insufficient ideas, many of which sadly have come true beyond probably even his imagination.

Editorial Review:

The preeminent resource guide for more than twenty years, this one-of-a-kind book, now available in paperback, has been updated to include those recently canonized and beatified.

Since its original publication in 1980, John J. Delaney’s Dictionary of Saints (more than 200,000 copies sold) has become the leading reference book for the scholar and general reader alike. With more than five thousand biographies of the saints—from the well known to the obscure—this new edition brings to life the inspiring accomplishments of these men and women of God. The martyrs and the monks, the mystics and the virgins, the doctors and the peasants are all contained in this essential volume. To know the saints, how they thrived in their achievements, how they lived in destitution, is to meet a fascinating company of people whose actions have influenced and enriched the history of the world.

Reset in an easy-to use-format, it contains substantial listings for the more popular saints, and thumbnail sketches for those less well known. From Aaron to Zosimus, this modern dictionary has been updated with the entries for the newly canonized, including Italian mystic Padre Pio, Mexican Nahuatl Juan Diego, Polish Franciscan Maximilian Kolbe, and Americans Katharine Drexel and Rose Philippine Duchesne. It also contains a complete listing of feast days, an index of patron saints, and several other useful appendixes.

Es uno de los mejores libros que he leido. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Editorial Review:

If you think a novel about a saint is likely to be a dry and airy sort of thing, think again. Godric was a 12th-century saint--born to Anglo-Saxon parents in Norfolk almost in the year of the Norman invasion (1066 for those of you long unschooled!). He was a peddler and wanderer long before he settled into the life of a hermit in northern England, led there by the famous hermit St. Cuthbert, who told him, "your true nesting place lies farther on, [and] until you reach it, every other place you find will fret you like a cage."

In Godric Frederick Buechner captures the voice and the times of this saint with a style that recalls the richly alliterative language of Middle English poetry. So too does it recall the beautiful earthiness of that literature, reminding us that this time of deep spirituality was also a time of real flesh-and-blood folk. And in some ways this is the deepest point of this delightful (and at times comic) novel: these people, like those who live among us today, become saints not by leaving the body behind but by finding a way to live more deeply within it. They find a way to turn it to glory. --Doug Thorpe

A UNIQUE LOOK AT THE LIFE OF OUR SAVIOR AS A CHILD. 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Anne Rice, famous for books such as "Interview with the Vampire" an "Queen of the Damned," brings her skills to tackle her most challenging work to date: a look at the childhood of our Lord and Savior. "Christ The Lord: Out of Egypt," the first of a planned trilogy, takes a look at Jesus during His seventh and eighth years on this earth, struggling to come to terms with His identity, as well as pondering the special powers He seems to possess, while returning to the family home of Nazareth during a tumultuous time, as rebellion has broken out through Palestine.
For the most part, Rice's novel delivers the goods. It is a fascinating portrait of how Jesus came to learn Who He was, and what His life was meant for. However, there are certain passages that tend to drag at times. Instead of focusing on the life-changing events of the time, Rice gives us details that, while interesting, just drag the plot out. But overall, this is an interesting look at how the Son of God lived at an early age. Christians and non-Christians alike should enjoy "Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt."
Book Grade: B

Editorial Review:

Having completed the two cycles of legend to which she has devoted her career so far, Anne Rice gives us now her most ambitious and courageous work, an audiobook about the early years of CHRIST THE LORD, based on the Gospels and on the most respected New Testament scholarship.

The audiobook’s power derives from the passion its author brings to the writing and the way in which she summons up the voice, the presence, the words of Jesus who tells the story.

Bunyan's Masterpiece in Respectfully Modern English 5 out of 5 stars.
26 of 26 people found this review helpful.

Wiersebe has done a great job revising the English to make Pilgrim's Progress understandable to the modern American. His revisions are done sparingly, preserving the style of the original.
As a devout Evangelical himself, Wiersbe has no agenda other than making the work understandable. His notes and comments at the end of each section offer theological insights, both true to Bunyan and true to the Scripture.

If you are reading Pilgrim's Progress for you own edification, or if you are teaching a class, this is the best edition.

A Pilgrims Progress for the rest of us! 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 26 people found this review helpful.

Get this version of Pilgrims Progress if you want to understand it best. The notes in this book are outstanding and are presented along side the text so you don't have to flip pages. I have given out about 10 copies of this book to my friends and they have all loved it. I have read this book to young and old and they all enjoyed it. Yes, it is a paraphase but it lovingly captures the message and explains the historical context.

Do not forget that Bunyan was a simple tinker; a practical man. I don't think he would have objected to this paraphrase so long as the message he intended came through clearly and was accessible to everyone, and in this, it well accomplishes. Warren W. Wiersbe is a well known international Bible conference teacher, a gifted communicator, and is known as a "pastors, pastor." He has kept to Bunyan's meaning and gives about the best running commentaries available. Buy the original for its poetic language, but if you want to understand its timeless message and have a fun read, buy this version. In fact, buy five copies and share them with friends. It was the message, not the language, which made this one of two books almost every English family owned in Bunyan's times.

Editorial Review:

Makes the richness of Bunyan's work readily accessible to readers of all ages and backgrounds. Discover new truths that will enlighten and magnify your views of this encouraging classic.

"Every year you grow, you will find me bigger." --Aslan to Lucy in Prince Caspian

C. S. Lewis was, of course, a brilliant apologist, and his books contain much to feed your intellect. But Lewis was also very concerned about Christian formation and strongly desired to help believers deepen their faith and broaden their vision of God.

In this book Peter Schakel opens to you the more practical parts of Lewis's wonderful writings. Covering areas of potential struggle such as prayer, suffering, doubt and love, Schakel draws principles from Lewis's nonfiction as well as illustrations from the Chronicles of Narnia to stir your imagination and soul so that you might see God in new ways. In addition, the author quotes from contemporaries of Lewis, showing how their thinking fit with Lewis's.

With reflection questions included, this deeper look at Lewis's formational writings is valuable for your personal devotions or for group discussions. Either way, as you read you will find God bigger and bigger.

Inspiring 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 28 people found this review helpful.

In reading the few reviews of people who did not like this book, it seems that it is the genre more than the book itself which they don't care for. Is this book redundant, as one reviewer accused it of being? Most assuredly so, but that should hardly be a surprise in a text such as this which explores the inklings of a powerful intellect that is attempting to grapple with the "big" questions.

Augustine writes with a brutal honesty about himself & his weaknesses of which most of us, I would wager, would be incapable of duplicating. The book is filled with theological speculations and a sense of deep-seated guilt that Augustine feels because of his sins. Some of the passages regarding faith might seem a bit ad-hoc to the modern reader, but I suppose there is no way around that.

This is a good book, but it is not a book for everyone. I would recommend it if you have an interest in philosophy, religion, or the philosophy of religion. I would admonish those who do not have an enthusiasm for these three areas not to read this book.

Editorial Review:

Acknowledged in every age and every nation of the Western World for nearly 1,500 years as one of mankind's great literary treasures, this is the classic autobiography of a man who journeyed from sin to sainthood, from heresy to the heights of theological insight, and from the darkness of worldly ambition to the changeless light of grace.
