Braun Mincher has a wonderful way of explaining everything from leasing or buying a car, all mortgage related items, credit card info and so much more.

I will make sure that all my friends and family get this wonderful book for gifts.

Editorial Review:

Daily headlines warn American workers that their retirement years may be far from golden. The average worker needs more retirement income than ever, due to increased life expectancy and soaring health care costs. But the main components of the retirement income system—Social Security and employer-provided pensions—are on the decline. What s more, fewer employers are providing retiree health insurance, forcing households to purchase their own coverage or do without.

This bleak picture has inspired calls to fix Social Security, shore up employer pensions, and redesign 401(k) plans. But as Alicia Munnell and Steven Sass show in this thought-provoking book, the most effective response to the retirement income challenge lies elsewhere—in remaining in the workforce longer. At first blush, it may seem almost Orwellian to suggest that saving retirement requires reducing its length. But working longer does not mean working forever. By staying on the job for another two to four years, retirees in 2030 can be as well off as those in the current generation.

Working Longer investigates the prospects for moving the average retirement age from 63, the current figure, to 66. The authors ask whether future generations of workers will be healthy enough to work beyond the current retirement age, as well as whether older men and women are willing to do so. They examine companies incentives to employ older workers and ask what government can do to promote continued participation in the workforce. Finally, they consider the challenge of ensuring a secure retirement for low-wage workers and those who are unable to continue to work.

Spending a few additional years in the labor force can make a big difference. By continuing to work until their mid-60s or beyond, most individuals should be able to secure a reasonably comfortable retirement. Implementing such a change on a large scale will not be simple, however. It requires thought and planning on the part of individuals, employers, and the government. In Working Longer, Munnell and Sass explain what each of these groups can and should do to keep the American dream of retirement alive.

There is always more to learn... 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I knew I would enjoy this book as I am a big fan of the Roth IRA, especially encouraging kid's to begin their own. It's not just the tax-free wealth the Roth provides, but also the flexibility of withdrawing contributions in a true emergency, plus the treasure you can pass on to your heirs that make the Roth very exciting!

This book is a winner! It definitely has some technical sections but they are certainly easier to read than the IRS publication. (There are also mathematical sections to demonstrate and back up statements -- for those of you might have a "show me the numbers" attitude.)

Perhaps you have already started your Roth because you believe in a tax-free investment. Will this book teach you something new? It seems there is always more to learn when it comes to the Roth IRA. For example: this was the first book I've read that has a section devoted to Social Security benefits. Depending on your income, the taxable amount of Social Security benefits can be impacted by your choice of a Traditional or a Roth IRA. There is a lot of discussion on conversions as well, which will help maximize your Roth balance. I honestly can't imagine anyone reading this book and claiming they learned nothing new.

Go Roth is a book to own, a book to highlight. You cannot just borrow it from the library because you will be using it again and again as your Roth IRA passes through the different possible phases (contributions, conversions, early withdrawals, distributions, or inheritance).

My assumption is that we are all smart enough to start a Roth (once we know what one is), but we still need to be educated on how to handle it, how to maximize it, and how to pass on what we don't use to our heirs. In addition to the IRS publications, this book will be our little reference guide.

Editorial Review:

This book makes it easy to learn how you can get the most from Roth accounts, including Roth IRAs and Roth accounts in 401k and 403b plans. In plain language it covers:

Choices. Deciding whether a Roth account is best for you.

Building wealth. Using contributions and conversions to build your account.

Managing the account. A sound investment approach for long-term growth without excessive risk.

Distributions. How to withdraw money from your Roth account without paying tax or penalties.

Go Roth! is a complete, authoritative guide to Roth accounts, covering all the rules and explaining strategies that will help you build and preserved retirement wealth.

PRE- AND POST-RETIREMENT PLANNING THAT MAKES SENSE

GETTING STARTED IN A FINANCIALLY SECURE RETIREMENT

If you want to make the most of your retirement years, you have to seriously think about the retirement lifestyle you want and the path that will get you there. In order to do this, you need reliable retirement information that will allow you to properly chart your course. Nobody knows this better than author Henry Hebeler, who retired from the corporate world more than fifteen years ago--and quickly discovered that much of the retirement planning advice available wasn't helping people accomplish their goals.

Now, with Getting Started in a Financially Secure Retirement, Hebeler shares his experience in this field with you and reveals what it really takes to achieve the retirement you want. Written in a straightforward and accessible style, Getting Started in a Financially Secure Retirement dismisses the assumptions that many popular retirement planning methods make and addresses some of today's most important retirement issues, including everything from planning with realistic economic inputs to neglected subjects such as replacement budgeting, reverse dollar cost averaging, and the need for resiliency when encountering surprise events.

Filled with in-depth insights, practical advice, and helpful retirement planning tools, Getting Started in a Financially Secure Retirement will allow you to apply Hebeler's proven principles to your own specific situation--whether you're already retired or still working--and make more informed financial decisions as you plan for the years ahead.

WOW 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm not a big reader but could barely put this book down. Most of the book is about the non-financial impacts in retirement, which seem to be overlooked by most people. I highly recommend.

Good for retirement planning 3 out of 5 stars.

Says you don't need a million, but makes it clear that it should would help. Not much help unless you plan to have your house paid off prior to retirement, seems to be a basis for a lot of the recommendations. For those of us who will not have the house paid off, and are now upsidedown due to the economy it means more years of work prior to retirement. Should be updated to be useful.

Easy and Fun to Read 5 out of 5 stars.

I enjoyed this book so much, that my boss, brother & sister all wanted copies, so I gave them each their own to read!

Editorial Review:

Warner takes on the financial service industry's maxim that to avoid financial destitution in old age, Americans need to put aside larger sums of money that they are currently doing. Warner also advises readers on a number of other ways to enjoy the retirement years, including maintaining good health, having friends and close family ties, and enjoying varied interests and activities. Useful textbook 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I am enrolled in the Certified Financial Planner designation program. Tools and Techniques of Employee Benefit and Retirement Planning is the textbook for the Retirement Planning module. I found this to be the most useful and practical textbook in the course. It is a book that will remain on my shelf for future reference long after I finish the designation program. The information in the textbook in written in a practical manner. It is easy to understand, well-organized and to the point.

Text Book For Retirement Planning 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I needed this book for a Retirement Planning class in preparation for a CFP certificate. The book was a better value than from other sources, and I received it in time for my first class. This is my third class in Financial Planning and the text seems to be aimed at the practitioner in the field; so, it is somewhat difficult. However, it is very complete.

Required for CFP course; not sure why 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is difficult to use for studying for the CFP exam, because it is essentially unindexed. The topics are not very thorough, and so I found it hard to answer questions in my homework even after carefully perusing the relevant chapters. I think what is missing is enough analysis to help you APPLY the rules.

I am not sure that it would be much more useful for an employee benefits manager.

Very helpful if you are looking for a simple guide to benefits, but if you want more commentary on issues, books recommended by socialsecurity.org might be more informative.

Good Reference on Basic Law and Procedures 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Tomkiel has written a good reference for non-lawyers on the basics of Social Security law and how it is administered. It goes into some detail, so if you are looking for something light and breezy, it may be a bit much. But if you want to know what benefits are available, who is eligible for them, and how they are calculated, this book will fill the bill nicely.

Editorial Review:

For those looking for accessible assistance in using and understanding Social Security benefits, attorney and former Social Security claims representative Stanley A. Tomkiel, III cuts through the complex issues and explains the benefits in a clear and concise manner.

In addition to covering all the basics, included in this new edition are changes in the disability benefits schedule, explanations of the criteria used for working after retirement and still being able to collect Social Security benefits and example situations for easy understanding of complex regulations. Additional new material focuses on changes to Medicare/Medicaid benefits.

This complete guide will help you get all the benefits you are entitled to.
