Editorial Review:

This book has been updated and revised to help beginning students and grantwriters write an effective proposal, which increases their chances of success. The Third Edition of Proposal Writing: Effective Grantsmanship is not an exhaustive text on proposal writing; its purpose is to provide a solid foundation upon which to add years of experience to fine-tune grant writing skills. Authors Soraya M. Coley and Cynthia A. Scheinberg de-mystify the grant writing process and provide a guide to writing that is as jargon-free and simple to use as possible.

New to the Third Edition

  • Provides greater coherence and logic in the presentation of the chapters: A new organization around The Fundamentals of Proposal Writing; The Three Lens of Proposal Conceptualization; and Writing the Proposal.
  • Includes new topics: New chapters cover Using Technology in Proposal Development and Understanding the Agency and Funding Environment.
  • Offers an accompanying Web site: A student study site at http://www.sagepub.com/proposalwriting3study/ helps readers create their own proposals and further develop and practice concepts in the book.

Intended Audience
This is an excellent guide for beginning grant writers as well as graduate courses such as Grantwriting and Fundraising for Social Work, Social Work Program Planning, and Social Work Administration in the department of social work.

Solid Overview of AdSense, AdWords, Froogle and Catalogs 5 out of 5 stars.
36 of 36 people found this review helpful.

"Building Your Business with Google For Dummies" by Brad Hill is one of many options for learning Google's tools. This one is focused on using it to promote business websites.

You might not need this book. To find out, go to Google's website, and create an account. Look at the FAQs, testimonials and the help areas. Much of what's in Hill's book is logical, but is organized in as sensibly as any I have seen. I need this book for that reason. It saved me time from having to learn this information in a too slow trial-and-error way.

You'll learn a few important things about Google, and how to help them help you attract traffic, sell products, or create interest in your website.

AdWords
I have an online e-commerce site, and need to know Google. As a smaller business, I can't compete with the major companies in being listed in categories I feel are important. That's where Google AdWords comes in. It allows me, for a fee per click, to compete.

Hill's explanation of strategies and process is solid. There are ways to lose money, and he helps show how to test keywords, use ad groups, edit ads, and how to bid intelligently. He also looks at the premium service that allows big businesses to use oogle with less worry about click-through rates.

AdSense
AdSense, the tool that places Google ads on websites based on the page's content. While I only make a few cents when a vistor clicks through an ad, it helps me provide a service to my customers who do not feel my site met their needs.

Hill explains how AdSense makes money, and warns against cheating.

Increasing Your Page Rank
No one knows Google's formula for ranking pages. The most important factor is having useful information, being linked on other like-minded sites, not abusing the process.

Hill tells you what page rank means, and how to avoid mistakes many webmasters make. This includes tips on design, domain choice, keyword use.

Using Froogle and Google Catalogs
These are two features I have never used. Hill gives a good overview of this Google tool, which provides exposure to those websites selling products in a catalog-style, or through AOL and Yahoo shops.

I fully recommend "Building Your Business with Google For Dummies" by Brad Hill.

Editorial Review:

  • The first-ever book to show businesses step by step how to capitalize on advertising programs offered by Google, the world's #1 search engine, with more than 200 million search queries per day
  • Written by a veteran For Dummies author working in cooperation with Google, which will help support the book
  • From selecting the right keywords to crafting the right message, the book explains how to boost site traffic using AdWords, Google's hugely successful sponsored-link advertising program, which now has more than 150,000 advertisers
  • Also details how to make money with AdSense, a Google program that funnels relevant AdWords ads to other sites-and pays those sites whenever someone clicks on them

Editorial Review:

Whoever heard of raising $1,000 gifts (not to mention $3,000, $4,000 and $5,000 gifts) by mail? That's the realm of face-to-face fundraising, right?

Not exclusively, says Mal Warwick, in his book, The Mercifully Brief, Real World Guide to Raising $1,000 Gifts by Mail.

And Warwick should know. He's spent the last decade perfecting the art of high dollar direct mail.

Take just one mailing Warwick cites (he's produced scores of them to draw from). Nearly $150,000 was raised from only 2,400 donors, many of whom had never given more than $100 to the organization sending the mailing.

Just as remarkable, the final fundraising cost for this effort was … eight cents! per dollar raised.

How do you do this? Must you tap a professional firm or be a prizewinning writer?

Absolutely not. Warwick touts self-reliance. He shows you - with carefully selected examples and illustrations - how to succeed on your own, walking you step by step through the process of identifying your prospects, crafting the right letter, the right brochure, the right response device, and the right envelope.

In this pioneering work, Warwick convinces even the most doubting Thomas. Commit to the strategies he outlines, and you'll be startled, if not astounded, by the results.

A much needed book for nonprofit fundraisers to use when they want to get better at their job. Twothumbsup! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I loved this book. I have not read another book like it regarding nonprofit fundraising. It strikes me as kind of odd that one has not been previously written. But now one has! Awesome. Use it to establish a data-driven approach to fundraising in your nonprofit organization. There are 9 chapters in this book as follows:

1. Overview of fundraising analytics
2. Understanding your constituents
3. Analytics and prospects
4. Analytics and campaign planning
5. Data-driven prospect management
6. Annual giving analytics
7. Selecting data for mining
8. Descriptive analysis: Basic statistics and scoring models
9. Regression analysis

So much of fundraising involves building a database of donors. Then building relationships with the donors who want to get more involved with the organization. But how does a fundraiser funnel that database of donors into a filter so the donors with the commitment, connection, and capacity can be fully hosed down? The answer: fundraising analytics.

This book covers it all when it comes to fundraising analytics. And what it doesn't tell you can be easily dreamed up by the reader as she reads along. I particularly enjoyed the first Appendix entitled "Final Thoughts on Fundraising Analytics." However, I think it should have been included as a conclusion in the main body of the book. And the glossary included as an appendix was good, too. 5 stars!

PS. Don't expect to learn what tools or computer programs one should use to make all this analysis happen. But that is best saved for another book that I don't think has been written.

Editorial Review:

Fundraising Analytics: Using Data to Guide Strategy Fundraising Analytics shows you how to turn your nonprofit?s organizational data?with an appropriate focus on donors?into actionable knowledge. The result? A vibrant, donor-centered nonprofit organization that makes maximum use of data to reveal the unique diversity of its donors. It provides step-by-step instructions for understanding your constituents, developing metrics to gauge and guide your success, and much more.

Like many in the Jossey Bass series, Tempel's work is thorough and well-written, covering all important aspects of fundraising. A great introductory guide.

A nice introductory tome regarding fundraising in the nonprofit sector in America. 1 thumb up! 4 out of 5 stars.

I liked this book. It provided me with my introduction to the nonprofit world and fundraising for nonprofits back in 2004. It's not written by one person. And as a result, it is not tightly written. In fact, I think there are 27 different contributors to this book. Maybe I counted wrong? But this book is an excellent introduction to the ins and outs of fundraising in America as we know it today. It has 7 chapters:

1. Fundraising: Context and philosophy
2. Fundamentals of successful fundraising
3. Building blocks for successful fundraising
4. Sources of fundraising
5. Successful fundraising methods
6. Managing successful fundraising
7. Ethics, stewardship, and the future of the fundraising profession

I have read other books written by the following contributors to this book: Mal Warwick, Kim Klein, Kay Grace, and James Greenfield. And I've met and listened to Ted Hart who runs the nonprofit ePhilanthropy Foundation. I have gotten things from reading or listening to all these people. And my favorite fundraising book of all was written by Ms. Grace: Beyond Fundraising (ISBN: 0471707139). Kim Klein's "Fundraising for Social Change" (ISBN: 0787984558) comes in a close second.

What I liked the most about this book was the quality of writing and the breadth of coverage. It talks about annual giving programs, captial campaigns, endowment campaigns, and planned giving. It also covers ethics that fundraisers should adhere to. There is a lot to the art and science of raising funds for nonprofits. And this book seems to touch on much of it.

Don't expect to learn the specifics of how to do "an ask" in a major gift setting. Don't expect to be told how to manage a successful capital campaign, or to adeptly use the Internet as a fundraising tool. And I was happy there wasn't much if any coverage of grants and grant writing. Phew! But this book covers enough about everything that you can intelligently search out other books to supplement your read of this book. 4 stars!

Editorial Review:

This thoroughly revised and updated edition of the classic book in the field provides a conceptual foundation for the fund raising profession. Hank Rosso's Achieving Excellence in Fund Raising examines the profession's principles, strategies, and methods and is filled with practical examples. Guided by the enduring philosophy of fund raising master Henry A. Rosso, contributors explain the reasoning behind the planning and selection of strategies for all fund raising activities, including building your case for support, approaching donors, managing campaigns, and demonstrating stewardship.

Editorial Review:

The Logic Model Guidebook offers a concise, practical overview of the logic modeling process as applied to numerous organizational contexts. Authors Lisa Wyatt Knowlton (Ed.D.) and Cynthia C. Phillips (Ph.D.) examine the structures, processes, and language of logic models as an emerging tool that improves the design, development, and implementation of change efforts within programs and greater organizational initiatives. Through concise, step-by-step process articulation, enhanced by numerous visual learning guides (sample models, checklists, exercises, worksheets) and case examples, the authors provide students, practitioners, and beginning researchers with invaluable tools to develop and improve these models.

Praise for The Logic Mode Guidebook

“A very thorough treatment of the practice of logic modeling with concrete guidance based on actual programs and projects. The Guidebook is useful both as a teaching tool and as a more general way of familiarizing practitioners with logic models. I am impressed with the comprehensiveness and detail…”
-Richard Elmore, Ph.D., Graduate School of Education, Harvard University

“This book captures and explains a critical set of planning and thinking skills, and provides the tools that are useful for anyone engaged in management or development of complex programs and strategies. The logic model provides a powerful vehicle to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of nonprofit organizations. The Guidebook leads the field in providing both the theory and the practice of using logic models as a critical management tool – especially for the nonprofit sector.
-Kathryn Agard, Ph.D., Executive Director, Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership, Grand Valley State University

“The Guidebook contains refinements to the logic modeling technique and best practices that have accrued over nearly a decade. It links models to organizational learning in general and systems thinking in particular…It takes our thinking about models in a whole new direction!”
-Craig Russon, Ph.D., Evaluation Manager, W. K. Kellogg Foundation (former)

“I especially liked the learning aids , clear writing style, the many figures and examples, and listings of important points within each chapter. This is all good teaching methodology…Logic models are an important tool in planning and evaluation. Both planners and evaluators should know how to use them.”
-James R. Sanders, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Western Michigan University

“The Guidebook is easy to read and understand. I like how logic models make assumptions visible. This makes it more likely to choose effective strategies and secure desired results .”

VC Investing Basics 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Much updated from previous editions, David Gladstone's useful text provides a very cursory survey of deal and investment techniques, albeit for slightly later than "sexy" stage deals. However, as this book is designed for the novice, and as Lipper's text has fallen out of print, this sadly remains the only general text on VC investing for the inexperienced, and is useful in context of the level which it is designed to educate. While the many checklists may be somewhat annoying to seasoned VCs, they are probably indispensable to the novice investor, since they provide a summary framework when working through deal and business terms. And while the book is designed more for later stage (through certainly not LATE stage, as some have alluded to) deals, the book is, again, designed to educate the novice venture investor, who really shouldn't be doing high tech start-ups anyway. Irrespective of that, anyone who presumes to write a text on investing in high tech start ups would likely find his text applicable only for the next few months after printing. Ours is an industry that evolves very quickly, and changes rapidly in accordance to the latest trends. No one can teach you how to pick the winners in the trend that hasn't happened yet. Getting the basics from a text like Gladstone's, however, can give you the fundamentals on which to build that "knack".

Editorial Review:

In his classic bestseller Venture Capital Handbook, leading venture capitalist David Gladstone showed thousands of companies how to get funding and work with early stage investors. Now, in his revision of the classic, Venture Capital Investing, he looks at venture capital through the eyes of the investor. Gladstone shows all of you VC investors and angels exactly how to weed through scores of business proposals and find the gem that will deliver outstanding returns, especially in these soft economic times. You will learn what to look for in a business proposition; how to assess entrepreneurs and their management teams; how to evaluate financial statements, market niches, competitive environments, and product innovations; how to investigate a business that's already operating; and how to build effective partnerships with existing portfolio companies.

Best fundraising book on the market 5 out of 5 stars.

A thoughtful, humorous account of the world of grassroots fundraising. The author brings her experience, warmth and humor to this very important book on fundraising. It is an excellent tool for non profit agencies. I recommend it for any non-profit agency staff member or volunteer board member that wants to break out of the fundraising doldrums into fundraising excellence.

This book is awesome! 5 out of 5 stars.

Most of the nonprofit "help" books are very dry, but this one is very readable. The information is extremely helpful and directly addresses the difficulties that we have to overcome in fundraising, particularly the "I hate to ask people for money" syndrome. I love that in places, the author says, "here is the attitude you may have.. but... get over it!" and then proceeds to tell you how TO approach things with humor and good advice. If you do fundraising or work with a group that does fundraising, you will find great information and ideas in this book!

Editorial Review:

A guide that shows nonprofit organizations how to raise funds more effectively by working with their communities.

Editorial Review:

In a world of limited funding, grantseeking is extremely competitive. Grant applications fail and succeed for a number of reasons, and careful proposal planning and writing are critical to success. Now in its 4th edition, this standard guide helps grantseekers navigate the funding process in the Internet age. As in earlier editions, this book discusses funding from government, foundation, and corporate sponsors. Included are practical advice and examples on developing proposal ideas, identifying funding sources, creating systems and procedures to support grantseeking activities, developing procedural components, budget forecasting, submission procedures, and follow-up techniques. New to this edition, though, are more extensive information on family foundations; updated websites, including 25% more than in the last edition; more examples of successful proposals, including 9 sample letters complete with annotations; expanded instructions on evaluation and outcomes assessment, which are critical to successful applications; and guidance on project sustainability after grant termination, a factor crucial to securing funding. The volume also includes checklists and a bibliography.
