A much needed book for nonprofit fundraisers to use when they want to get better at their job. Twothumbsup! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I loved this book. I have not read another book like it regarding nonprofit fundraising. It strikes me as kind of odd that one has not been previously written. But now one has! Awesome. Use it to establish a data-driven approach to fundraising in your nonprofit organization. There are 9 chapters in this book as follows:

1. Overview of fundraising analytics
2. Understanding your constituents
3. Analytics and prospects
4. Analytics and campaign planning
5. Data-driven prospect management
6. Annual giving analytics
7. Selecting data for mining
8. Descriptive analysis: Basic statistics and scoring models
9. Regression analysis

So much of fundraising involves building a database of donors. Then building relationships with the donors who want to get more involved with the organization. But how does a fundraiser funnel that database of donors into a filter so the donors with the commitment, connection, and capacity can be fully hosed down? The answer: fundraising analytics.

This book covers it all when it comes to fundraising analytics. And what it doesn't tell you can be easily dreamed up by the reader as she reads along. I particularly enjoyed the first Appendix entitled "Final Thoughts on Fundraising Analytics." However, I think it should have been included as a conclusion in the main body of the book. And the glossary included as an appendix was good, too. 5 stars!

PS. Don't expect to learn what tools or computer programs one should use to make all this analysis happen. But that is best saved for another book that I don't think has been written.

Editorial Review:

Fundraising Analytics: Using Data to Guide Strategy Fundraising Analytics shows you how to turn your nonprofit?s organizational data?with an appropriate focus on donors?into actionable knowledge. The result? A vibrant, donor-centered nonprofit organization that makes maximum use of data to reveal the unique diversity of its donors. It provides step-by-step instructions for understanding your constituents, developing metrics to gauge and guide your success, and much more.

A thoughtful, humorous account of the world of grassroots fundraising. The author brings her experience, warmth and humor to this very important book on fundraising. It is an excellent tool for non profit agencies. I recommend it for any non-profit agency staff member or volunteer board member that wants to break out of the fundraising doldrums into fundraising excellence.

This book is awesome! 5 out of 5 stars.

Most of the nonprofit "help" books are very dry, but this one is very readable. The information is extremely helpful and directly addresses the difficulties that we have to overcome in fundraising, particularly the "I hate to ask people for money" syndrome. I love that in places, the author says, "here is the attitude you may have.. but... get over it!" and then proceeds to tell you how TO approach things with humor and good advice. If you do fundraising or work with a group that does fundraising, you will find great information and ideas in this book!

Editorial Review:

In a world of limited funding, grantseeking is extremely competitive. Grant applications fail and succeed for a number of reasons, and careful proposal planning and writing are critical to success. Now in its 4th edition, this standard guide helps grantseekers navigate the funding process in the Internet age. As in earlier editions, this book discusses funding from government, foundation, and corporate sponsors. Included are practical advice and examples on developing proposal ideas, identifying funding sources, creating systems and procedures to support grantseeking activities, developing procedural components, budget forecasting, submission procedures, and follow-up techniques. New to this edition, though, are more extensive information on family foundations; updated websites, including 25% more than in the last edition; more examples of successful proposals, including 9 sample letters complete with annotations; expanded instructions on evaluation and outcomes assessment, which are critical to successful applications; and guidance on project sustainability after grant termination, a factor crucial to securing funding. The volume also includes checklists and a bibliography.

An essential tool for success 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I was very excited to read this book because it really is an essential tool to help plan a sponsorship strategy, prepare a proposal, get a meeting, gain committment and ultimately bring in dollars. It is laid out in a very easy step-by-step process that everyone can follow and helps you realize the value your organization can give to potential sponsors. Most importantly, it takes the fear out of selling and demonstrates the correct way to speak to and work with potential sponsors for maximum benefit.

I refer to this book constantly during my sponsorship work with the California Pacific Medical Center Foundation and the Junior League in San Francisco and can say that it has significantly helped me achieve my fundraising goals and advance my career.

Absolutely Awesome. Very Usable and Comprehensive 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Unlike most books about proposal writing, this book really gets down to the nuts and bolts. But it also provides persuasion strategies that really help land the client. The book would work with business or technical applications.

I've read many books on proposals, but this is the only one I would recommend. You won't need another book if you have this one.

Editorial Review:

Writing Proposals offers a comprehensive approach to proposal development which is often not found in other books on the subject. Chapters place the steps for developing an effective proposal in a rhetorical context, building a coherent approach to persuasive writing. Offers readers visual thinking strategies, encouraging them to tap into their own abilities to visualize complex situations and imagine solutions. Provides strategies for using the Internet to collect information toward writing proposals, including key word and topic tree search techniques. Helps readers sort out the monetary needs of their proposal by including a complete discussion on creating budgets. The book uses two case studies to illustrate the proposal writing process. Appearing in every chapter, these case studies show readers how people invent, compose, revise, and edit proposals. For those seeking a comprehensive guide to writing proposals.

Editorial Review:

Whoever heard of raising $1,000 gifts (not to mention $3,000, $4,000 and $5,000 gifts) by mail? That's the realm of face-to-face fundraising, right?

Not exclusively, says Mal Warwick, in his book, The Mercifully Brief, Real World Guide to Raising $1,000 Gifts by Mail.

And Warwick should know. He's spent the last decade perfecting the art of high dollar direct mail.

Take just one mailing Warwick cites (he's produced scores of them to draw from). Nearly $150,000 was raised from only 2,400 donors, many of whom had never given more than $100 to the organization sending the mailing.

Just as remarkable, the final fundraising cost for this effort was … eight cents! per dollar raised.

How do you do this? Must you tap a professional firm or be a prizewinning writer?

Absolutely not. Warwick touts self-reliance. He shows you - with carefully selected examples and illustrations - how to succeed on your own, walking you step by step through the process of identifying your prospects, crafting the right letter, the right brochure, the right response device, and the right envelope.

In this pioneering work, Warwick convinces even the most doubting Thomas. Commit to the strategies he outlines, and you'll be startled, if not astounded, by the results.

Everyone involved in fundraising for nonprofits should understand what is covered in this book. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I thought this was a wonderful book. It includes 14 chapters and a glossary. Although I'm not sure the glossary added to the book. I don't view the book to be a complete treatise on nonprofit fundraising, but the author says he did not expect it to be. There is no coverage of special events, grant proposals, volunteers, or local fundraising activities. What this book talks about, and does it well, is nonprofits and their development arms need to approach donors with mutual consideration, thoughtfulness, and appreciation.

The world has gotten competitive. And nonprofit fundraising exists in an environment where technology and aggressive marketing tactics are the norm in how to do business. This book points out that technology and aggressive marketing have the potential to undermine the trust and confidence that are so important to effective fundraising. Fundraisers who understand that fundraising is about "building relationships" will not be obsessed with fundraising techniques and formulas. Instead, they will merely practice the art of fundraising that is all about building relationships.

This book was first written in the early 1990s and made a substantial contribution to the UK fundraising community's library of tomes on how to practice fundraising. It presents a basic approach to fundraising that is time tested and works. Now, in the 21st century, the author has updated his book by incorporating his answers to questions he has received about the first edition, and by adding some new thoughts he has on the subject. The material covered in this book is important; everyone involved in fundraising for nonprofits should understand what is covered in this book and take that understanding with them when they do their work as fundraisers.

I would have liked the book better if there had been one more chapter included. The author is critical of technology and aggressive marketing tactics. But he doesn't provide his view as to how technology and marketing tactics should be used specifically. I think the book would benefit with a chapter that would cover some of these specifics. In my humble opinion, technology and marketing tactics are still very important and critical to fundraising success. It's just how they can be used so donors are trusting of nonprofits that could have been better explained.

This book was an easy read. Each chapter is followed by a summary called "action points." And I liked this feature. I also liked very much the summary of the book provided at page xxii of the book's Preface. At the end of the book is a lengthy bibliography. Many good books are included in that list, and the reader will probably want to search some of them out for further reading. 5 stars!
