eh.... 3 out of 5 stars.

This book is just okay. The pictures are cute and vivid which I like, but it's very simplistic and VERY short. My kids (3 years and 18 months) just aren't all that excited by it. It's a fine book, but I'm surprised by all the 5 star ratings. Expectations were set a bit high, I guess.

My 9 Month Old loves this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

She loves the holes in the book and the surprise at the end! (her image in the mirror) it is her current favorite. Peek a boo is an often used phrase for her right now and her favorite game, so using different words for "boo" is super funny to her!

Where's the beef? Oh, page 3. 2 out of 5 stars.

In looking for another whimsical, creative, offbeat baby book like Pat the Bunny (from the book within the book: "How big is bunny? Soooooooo big.") I found that this title and two Boynton books were purchased on Amazon by people who bought Pat. Because of the connection with Pat I was expecting something more than just five peek-a-s and I also expected that every image would be tied together in a story.

The peek-a-s are as follows: Owl/Who, Cow/Moo, Ghost/Boo, Animals/Zoo, Train/Choo-Choo, and the predictable You. The cutouts through which you see part of the full image are the same rotated peanut shape on every page.

I would have expected the partial views at least to contain multiple interesting hints about the uncovered image that encourage the baby to think. Only the Zoo page really has anything approaching that (leaves and animal designs...but in that image the partial view of the giraffe looks like a quilt so it may be more confusing than helpful). It would have been nice if the cutout shapes had some relation to the images behind them.

I know that you didn't ask but in my opinion the four- and five-star baby books should have some or all of the following elements: (1) little visual details that the baby can gradually notice after repeated readings (plentiful, for example, in Big Red Barn), (2) an actual story about something in the real world, perhaps repeated in a few different ways (as in Bear Hunt) or with different types of characters (as in More, More, More Said the Baby) or even just an underlying structure that can be learned along with individually engaging images (like in ABC Kids or 100 First Words), (3) interactivity that involves the baby in more than one action (as in Pat the Bunny or the color/object books with things to feel or move), (4) creative or whimsical elements that aren't in any of the hundreds of other books the baby will read (like in Pat or the Very Hungry Caterpillar), (5) a style (story or images) that has become archetypal and hasn't been ripped off or repeated by everyone else (any of the above), (6) Lyrical text (Brown Bear or Bear Hunt), (7) a story with an enlightening theme that isn't sappy or preachy (like What Daddies Do Best).

I gave this as many as two stars because baby's mom says that it will help her practice similar-sounding words.

Editorial Review:

Colorful pictures and simple rhyming texts help children guess what's peeking through the die-cut windows in these two fun board books. The anticipation of what's hiding on the next page and th bright, engaging illustrations will keep youngsters guessing and giggling all the way to the suprise endings.

Didn't realize this was a mini-version of the book till I received it. It's about the size of an adult's hand (fingertip to palm). Doesn't make the best gift.

The Christmas Edition
This was a bedtime favorite of my children. Now our oldest is about to have her own child (its a boy). So I bought a parcel of books for the baby. When Kimberly saw this book, tears sprang in her eyes remembering me reading this to her while she sat on my lap. In a few more months someone new will be in her arms on her lap, and she will be reading this book to him.

Editorial Review:

In a great green room, tucked away in bed, is a little bunny. "Goodnight room, goodnight moon." And to all the familiar things in the softly lit room -- to the picture of the three little bears sitting on chairs, to the clocks and his socks, to themittens and the kittens, toeverything one by one -- the little bunny says goodnight.

In this classic of children's literature, beloved by generations of readers and listeners, the quiet poetry of the words and the gentle, lulling illustrations combine to make a perfect book for the end of the day.

Forgiveness without remorse 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Briefly, the story revolves around Max, a young boy who behaves naughtily and is sent to bed without supper. In his room, he is transported to another world "where the wild things are" where he is made king of the wild things. After having his fill of leading the wild things, he returns to his room to find his supper left on his dresser.

This story strikes an interesting balance between the real world of Max and his family and Max's dream world "where the wild things are". Whereas in the former world his actions are seen as naughty and are decried, the dream world provides Max not only with the ability to act in the way he wants but also to have those actions sanctioned and praised by those around him.

Beyond that, even, is the amount of control Max can exert in each world. The real world limits him and he is almost totally at the mercy of his parents who send him to his room. In the wild world, even before he becomes king of the wild things, he is able to control the other wild things and his power is unlimited. An interesting question to ask is whether Max would be as naughty as he is if he believed himself to have more power in the real world.

The conclusion of the story seems to come mostly as the author stumbles over himself to wrap up the story. It is unclear why the angry parents would reward Max's behavior or why they would negate the punishment meted out at the beginning of the story. I found the warm supper waiting for Max upon his return from the wild world to be somewhat out of place. I understand, perhaps, that even bad kids are loved and that may be the moral being taught here, but it is strange that Max just receives the food out of the blue with no remorse on his part.

The book is a fun story and holds the attention of my 3 year old. He loves when I improvise the roaring and gnashing. Throwing in a little Troggs "Wild Thing" during the rumpus makes story time a little bit more fun too. I don't think the strange lesson at the end ruins the story, and I'm not sure that the target audience of this book would be able to figure it out in the first place. 4 stars for a fun book that holds kids' attentions.

Editorial Review:

In the forty years since Max first cried "Let the wild rumpus start," Maurice Sendak's classic picture book has become one of the most highly acclaimed and best-loved children's books of all time. Now, in celebration of this special anniversary, introduce a new generation to Max's imaginative journey to where the wild things are.

great book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I LOVED this book when I was a kid! Now I am excited to be reading it to my own classroom as a teacher!

Imagine 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have been given many opportunities to read this book to children and each time I am able to hear the laugh of a child and see a smile on their face. A child's imagination is the most amazing thing. This book allows children's imaginations to be at work as they see the detailed images and hear the words. When doing my student teaching I read this story to my class and asked them to draw a picture of unusual weather they would like to encounter. The images were absolutely outstanding, but what was even more exciting was being able to witness children's imaginations at work.

Editorial Review:

The tiny town of Chewandswallow was very much like any other tiny town except for its weather which came three times a day, at breakfast lunch and dinner.

But it never rained rain and it never snowed snow and it never blew just wind. It rained things like soup and juice. It snowed things like mashed potatoes. And sometimes the wind blew in storms of hamburgers.

Life for the townspeople was delicious until the weather took a turn for the worse. The food got larger and larger and so did the portions. Chewandswallow was plagued by damaging floods and storms of huge food. the town was a mess and the people feared for their lives.

Something had to be done, and in a hurry.

Very cute book 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I love Sandra Boynton. I love the illustrated characters, the simple rhymes and so, evidently, do children. The Going to Bed Bed Book looked perfect for my toddler at bed time, so I couldn't resist picking it up recently at a local bookstore. The board-book format means less destruction, so if you can just keep 'em from chewing it, the book should last a long time.

The short rhyming story follows the adorable cartoon characters as they go through their bedtime routine. They take their baths, put on their pajamas and brush their teeth. Now this is the part where I had a teensy problem...after brushing their teeth, the characters all go and exercise before going to bed. Now I don't know about you, but a two-year-old exercising before bedtime around here is a recipe for...well...a two-year-old not going to sleep. So I freely admit that I kind of skip that page.

But the very last lines make up for it:

"The moon is high. The sea is deep. They rock and rock and rock to sleep."

It is at this point that I usually drift off and my son has to jar me awake so I can kiss him goodnight.

I do recommend the book if you don't have a problem with the exercise bit or if you have a child who does NOT feel the need to mimic everything they see or read. It really is a lovely toddler's book for either gender.

Editorial Review:

No child likes going to bed and as every parent knows, their little treasures will try and delay it for as long as possible! Discover all the antics children get up to before going to bed, in this hilarious board book, written and illustrated in Boynton's own unique humourous style. The perfect way to read kids to sleep!

Perfect book for little ones! 5 out of 5 stars.

My son is a little over 1 1/2 years old. I bought him this book and it is his favorite with the hidden animals. He really enjoys making the animal sounds. The pictures are great and makes learning fun!!

Fun book! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My son, who is 11 months old, got this book a couple of months ago. He loves to lift the flaps and hear me make the animal sounds. I like the sturdiness of the book...it has already been through the ringers and all the flaps are still attatched! A good book for babies learning animals and their sounds.

Great little book! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My daughter (now 2 years old) has loved this book since she was 8 months old. Its great for travel because it is small and because it has a lot of pages for a board book. I had to open the flaps for her when she was little but now she loves to do it herself. We used this book to teach her the sounds the animals make and now she is learning to say the names of the animals. It has held up well considering the heavy use its had. At two, it is still a favorite book. I'm glad we bought it.

Illustrated in full color. Open the barn door and take a tour around the barnyard to find out just who's making all those wonderful animal sounds.

Repetitive, but that's the idea. Young kiddos, remember? 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

There are days when I am just thoroughly annoyed by this book.

And yet it remains a classic, and I grudgingly agree.

How can anyone not love the awesome repetitive rhymes and varying colors and animals? And how can you not get chills at how these animals are all staring at each other?

The original of interactive books and still probably the best.

Sweet brown bear 5 out of 5 stars.

Brown Bear's back! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I remember reading this charming story to my own kids and also to my preschool class. Now it's been reissued in board book format, artistically illustrated, and every bit as enjoyable. This is a perfect book for teaching color and animal names, in a catchy rhyming format. Each page foretells what the animal and color will be on the next. Recommended for reading to babies and for beginning readers to tackle on their own.

Editorial Review:

With more than two million copies sold, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? has opened up a world of learning to a generation of children. For this edition, created for the twenty-fifth anniversay in 1992, Bill Martin, Jr., restored his text to its original wording. And Eric Carle created all new pictures--based on the originals, but clearer, brighter, and truer to the colors they represent.

Great book to give to every new parent 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book tells the story of the 'circle of love'. It really touches your heart when you read how the mother took care of her little boy and when she became frail, the grown up son took care of her. Wonderful gift to give a new parent.

Love You, Forever 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a classic and a must have for all home libraries. It is a great gift for the new mom, parents of toddlers, or even a gift for your own mom or grandmom. Robert N. Munsch goes full circle with this book. Try it, you'll like it.

Lovely for Parents, Fine for Children ca. 4 and Up 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Like others, I choke up with tears every single time I read this, but I also don't think it's truly appropriate for very young children who still don't understand death or have a developed sense of time. I would think this would be appropriate for ages 4-5 and up.

That said, I think some of the complaints are misguided: they are missing the story's innocence and the veiled humor in the persistence of the mother. I also think that at some point even children have to learn about death, and what better way than through the story of a mother that loves her child no matter what?

However, I want to add another angle: the repetition of the main "chorus" "I'll love you forever, I'll love you for always, as long as I'm living, my baby you'll be." As musicians, my wife and I sing these lines to our son, and the repetition of these lines is heightened when sung. You don't have to be an opera diva or even sing in tune, but if you're musically inclined even a little bit, try softly singing it to these pitches (transposed up or down, one note per syllable):

I'll love you forever, I'll love you for aways, as long as I'm living, my baby you'll be.
G-C-D-E-E-D, A-D-E-F-F-D, B-B-C-D-D-B, B-C-D-E-C.

Crazy idea? Maybe, but it makes singing these repeated lines touching rather than boring.

All in all, I absolutely love this book and think it's innocence and presentation of the continuity of life through the love parents have for their children transcends any strange implications others are reading into it.

Editorial Review:

A young woman holds her newborn son and looks at him lovingly. Softly she sings to him "I'll love you forever, /I'll like you for always/ As long as I'm living/my baby you'll be".This is the story of how that little boy goes through the stages of childhood and becomes a man.

Needs better construction 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My son does love this book...especially the peek-a-boo page. However, I don't know why it's not constructed better. This book was about $10, and the pages are a thick paper instead of board book material. Since this book is geared towards the little ones, they really should make this into a board book. How much more expensive can that be? There are other touch and feel books that are board books that sell for $5 or $6.

disappointed 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was born and raised in another country, so I didn't grow up with this bunny, but I heard so much about it and was told it's a classic. I decided to purchase one for my son. I have to say it's a major disappointment because 1) it's poorly made that's not strong enough to sustain an infant's pulling, chewing, and abusing, 2) the sharp edge of the book always seems to hit my son's face (I'm afraid it will scratch his eyes one day...), 3) the fabric in the peek-a-boo page is very weak that it probably will come off in a few months, 4) the smell of the flowers is so storng (considering I try to buy everything organic and without perfume), 5) Daddy's scratchy face? it's a piece of sandpaper which is so rough that I would not let my son touch it in case it hurts his soft skin. Overall, I think it might have been a great concept in 1940, but time has changed and so should the construction of the book itself.
