Two boys' review: We like The Very Hungry Caterpillar better 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is eligible for Amazon's 4-for-3 promotion, so you are not risking a lot of money should you buy this book.

It isn't one of our favorites from Eric Carle. The story is supposed to address anger issues -- and it does -- by hitting you over the head as the ladybug flies from page to page trying to pick a fight with larger and larger animals.

The problem isn't the message it is the entertainment value. This book simply didn't engage our sons' interest. I suppose it is difficult enough to relate to a bug, much less an angry bug.

For our bedtime reading collection, we prefer these Carle books instead:

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Mixed-Up Chameleon

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

Editorial Review:

This beloved Eric Carle classic returns once again in a colorful new board book format. For generations, The Grouchy Ladybug has delighted readers of all ages with the story of a bad-tempered bug who won't say "please" or "thank you," won't share, and thinks she is bigger and better than anyone else. As children follow the Grouchy Ladybug on her journey, they will learn the important concepts of time, size, and shape, as well as the benefits of friendship and good manners.

This is a great collection of books. It literally has a number of ways to use them and will grow with your child.

Wonderful ! 5 out of 5 stars.

This collection of Eric Carle is one of my favorites. I gave it to a friend for her sons first birthday. It will hold up since the book material is sturdy & great for small fingers to hold on to. The illustrations are beautiful with colors that young children enjoy!
You will be pleased with this collection. Start reading with your child when they are young~ it is a gift for a lifetime!

Editorial Review:

Here is the perfect gift for young children learning their colors, shapes, and numbers. All four of Eric Carle’s popular new split-page board books are now packaged together in a slipcased library. A game as well as a learning experience, these early concept books are both fun and smart.

Children can turn the top pages independently from the bottom pages, creating a matching game that offers all the charm of Eric Carle’s bright collage illustrations. Collected here are My Very First Book of Colors, My Very First Book of Shapes, My Very First Book of Numbers, and My Very First Book of Words. Irresistible fun for young hands and minds!

Good first book for children learning about shapes 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a very cute book about shapes and is perfect as an introduction for children who have moved beyond basic circles, squares, and ovals. It introduces children to the triangle and works its way up to a decadron (although it defines a dodecadron at the back of the book when the story is over). I liked how it showed children where different shapes can be found in everyday life, and how a shape morphs just from adding one more side to an already existing shape. The story is cute, and it is a much nicer way for children to learn about shapes than most of the standard books that just show a drawing of something and then show a word to describe the object.

Editorial Review:

Bored and dissatisfied with his life, a triangle visits a local shapeshifter to add another angle to his shape. Poof! He becomes a quadrilateral. But then he gets greedy and keeps adding angles until he's completely transformed. Kids will enjoy this boldly colorful introduction to shapes and basic math concepts.

Now available in Scholastic Bookshelf editions, the Brainy Day Books have been developed by nationally acclaimed math educator and best-selling author Marilyn Burns. Using entertaining fictional stories, these books dispel the myth that math is dry, inaccessible, and unimaginative. At the end of each book, there's a special section that further outlines math concepts and provides questions to further engage children.

an old favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I "met" this book many years ago when I was a student teacher. It has supplemented and enriched many lessons on measurement since that time. Recently, I purchased it in order to pass it on to 2 younger teachers, for their classrooms. Its charm and humor are still appealing.

Measurement 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book to use as an introduction to a measurement unit. Quality, print of book, and size could be better, but this is the way it was published.

Great Book 4 out of 5 stars.

The King wants to give the Queen something special for her birthday. The Queen has everything, everything except a bed. The trouble is that no one in the Kingdom knows the answer to a very important question: How Big is a Bed? because beds at the time had not yet been invented. The Queen's birthday is only a few days away. How can they figure out what size the bed should be?

Not appropriate for learning shapes by "feel" 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I am a speech-language pathologist, and many of the children I work with benefit from using touch to learn. However, the cards in this set are not good for learning the shapes because the "feel" portions of the card are not always in the shape being described! A child should not be feeling a crooked ribbon shape while s/he hears the word square! Also, there is no need to have color associated with touch, because color is purely visual. Touching a fuzzy duckling and saying yellow is going to confuse a language impaired child and perhaps some very young children. It would be better to have more shapes (made properly) or numbers.

Throw these away and start over, DK. I know you can do better!

Fun cards that teach and entertain! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My daughter is a flashcard connosieur! She loves all kinds - even just the plain ones with pictures and words. But these...oh these are a flashcard baby's version of Shangri-La! How fun to feel the textures and connect those right and left sides of the brain! And now that she's 18 months old, the fun is even greater because she's "getting" it. We will use these until they are worn and bent and then, after my newborn son has also had his fun, we will cut them apart to add to my children's scrapbooks. Fun for every child!

Editorial Review:

Perfect for helping children develop early language skills, this exciting range of interactive flash cards reinforces learning through touch.

Pima Community College- Student Review 5 out of 5 stars.

Meatball the Pirate 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Once upon a time many years ago I watched my daughter Emma play with her cousin Brian, whom Emma lovingly referred to as Meatball, and I wondered how long it would take before he began to cry. At eight years old Meatball looked like a smaller version of Rhett Butler, he talked with a squeaky voice that was struggling to mature, and his blondish hair oddly matched the color of his skin. Every game between the two kids eventually turned sour--a bump of the head, a twisted arm or even harsh words would send the boy reeling into the kitchen looking for comfort. While I admired his theatrics, I did not acknowledge them. Emma, on the other hand, like to pretend he was her plaything, a doll she collected. Take, for example, the afternoon she dressed him up like a pirate and sent him out into the yard with a steak knife searching for the neighborhood tabby cat. Florence, the woman that lived across the street and spent most of her days with her nose between the blinds of her front window, knocked on my door and demanded that I do something. I invited her in for coffee but she ranted and raved, cluck-clucking about manners and responsibilities and child-rearing, none of which I particularly cared to hear about. Meatball ran inside and tugged at Florence's blue polyester pants. "Don't worry," he said. "I buried the knife in the backyard." Florence grabbed his wrist and told him that he needed to dig it back up. He sighed heavily, stared at the ground and then began to cry. I pulled the cigarettes from the pocket of my robe, lit it, and waved him inside.

Charlotte, Meatball's mother, picked him up every day at 5 o'clock. She sat on the couch with Meatball on her lap and listened as he recounted his day. She disregarded any of Emma's attempts to defend herself when Meatball claimed she had harmed him. But who would believe an eight-year-old boy that said his cousin had instructed him to hunt for prey and bring back souvenirs?

Classic book for new babies 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Newborn babies' vision is not highly developed. High-contrast patterns or pictures are easiest for them to see in the first few months of life. Tana Hoban's black & white board books are terrific choices. With simple illustrations of objects that will be familiar to babies, this book meets all my criteria for choosing books for babies. A fantastic choice for a new baby gift.

Maybe Boring to You, But Thrilling to Your Newborn 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I used to work with children's books, and have probably tried 100 books out with my 2 1/2 month old. This is the only book she LOVES to look at that doesn't have moving parts. Sure, she likes to listen to other books, but this is the one that is visually exciting to her. I can prop it up for her to look at and she keeps staring, transfixed, even as I go run to get the phone or whatever. The folks who complain that it bores them or their older babies have missed the point. Bold black and white books like this are for very young babies, when their vision and brains are still developing. No, it doesn't tell a story; that is not the purpose of this book. It is all looking at an interesting shape. No, these aren't the most common things in your child's life; this is perfectly appropriate, because they wouldn't be able to connect any shape, object and word this young even if you tried. No, you won't use it for years, or even a whole year, probably. I think less than $10 is not too much to pay for something that is going to get my child excited about interacting with books from day 1. Plus so much is overwhelming as a new baby/parent, and this is one thing that you can definitely enjoy together. I am planning on giving Black & White, which I think is the fold-out version, as baby gifts from now on.

Editorial Review:

Share these familiar
shapes with your baby.

It is never too early

Excellent book - especially for middle school boys 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I'm a 46 year-old Mom and I bought this book because of the great reviews, but I didn't know which son to give it to. My 4th grader falls into the age-range mentioned here at amazon, but based on the plot synopses here I felt it was more a book my 7th grader would like.

So I read it myself first. I LOVED it. What a great, moving, inspiring, different book. As stay-with-you as Hoot, or Terabithia, or Stargirl, or... to date myself ... as The Outsiders.

It's well-written, it's gripping, it's multi-layered, and it manages to keep track of multiple story arcs within itself without dropping any or using any sort of deux ex machina to get out of any. It presents it's villains without caricature, and it's heroes without pandering. It surprises you at nearly every turn - but not in a forced we-need-a-plot-twist way.

I won't describe the plot as it as been so well-described here. I'll just reiterate that this is an amazing young adult novel that I thoroughly enjoyed for myself as well.

And I personally would not give this to my 4th grader. Not that the reading level is too difficult, but I think the content is too dark and the layers perhaps too subtle for a 10 year-old. I'm giving this book to my 7th grader tomorrow (I just finished it tonight!) and I know he'll devour it.

Editorial Review:

A season with the toughest soccer team in the county gives a teen the confidence to stand up to his wicked brother. "Smart, adaptable, and anchored by a strong sense of self-worth, Paul makes a memorable protagonist in a cast of vividly drawn characters; multiple yet taut plotlines lead to a series of gripping climaxes and revelations. Readers are going to want more from this author."--Kirkus Reviews

Great book for teaching shapes and cloud, fun to read with felt board activity.

great for preschool & art projects 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book for pre-school age kids. It's a simple story with lots of opportunities for the kids to participate, saying what each picture is. I know a lot of teachers use this book and then have the kids make their own "ink blot" type images and then say what they see in their cloud. Very cute book.

Fun Read 4 out of 5 stars.

I Can't Believe I Finally Found This Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I have looked for this book for years. I had read it in a Pre-K class for my students. Another teacher had borrowed it from her town's library and my class loved it.
Since then, I have looked off and on for years but could not locate it. I now have a 3 year old grandson and we love to find animals, birds, etc. in the clouds. We have read this book several times already and he loves it.

Thanks,
Jeri

The white shape silhouetted against a blue background changes on every page. Is it a rabbit, a bird, or just spilt milk? Children are kept guessing until the surprise ending -- and will be encouraged to improvise similar games of their own.
