Two boys' review: We like The Very Hungry Caterpillar better 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is eligible for Amazon's 4-for-3 promotion, so you are not risking a lot of money should you buy this book.

It isn't one of our favorites from Eric Carle. The story is supposed to address anger issues -- and it does -- by hitting you over the head as the ladybug flies from page to page trying to pick a fight with larger and larger animals.

The problem isn't the message it is the entertainment value. This book simply didn't engage our sons' interest. I suppose it is difficult enough to relate to a bug, much less an angry bug.

For our bedtime reading collection, we prefer these Carle books instead:

an annual favorite with our kids 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Our kids (ages 5 and 8) are in love with this item. This is our 3rd or 4th year of buying the calendars. I pre-order them, and the kids anticipate the calendars' August arrival date the way they would anticipate Christmas or their birthdays. They spend a lot of time discussing what they will draw for each month, and they enjoy the coloring parts and putting on the special occasion stickers. It is a long-term project. They will spend weeks or even months on their calendars. This is a perfect gift for kids with a long attention span who like art projects. If you give this gift in December, though, it probably won't be finished by January 1, so give it earlier in the fall.

Editorial Review:

Make Your Own Calendar is back for 2009! Each month features a space for kids to create their own pictures, as well as clever border designs to color in. There are also over 200 colorful stickers included to mark special dates. Whimsical artwork from Steve Haskamp gives this calendar a fresh look, and invites kids to personalize it and make it their own.

high quality learning 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book teaches how to tell time with minutes in an easy to understand, visual way. I bought this for my 6 year old son and he is learning with ease. The book is very high quality. I also bought several of their other books for gifts and have been very pleased with every one. I highly recommend the Kumon products!

Very Helpful 4 out of 5 stars.

We liked it. Dd age 6 at the time thought the beginning exercises were too easy so we skipped those. I appreciated the concentrated study of time concepts and my dd liked the colorful format.

Excellent!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book teaches children how to tell the time in the most simplistic, yet effective way, that even a child who has trouble learning will get it! The graphics are very appealing yet do not distract from the subject matter being taught. When a child has completed this book, they will be able to tell any time on an analog clock. I would recommend completing all of the pages, even if the first few seem a bit easy. These pages help to reinforce the concept of telling time and lets the child build confidence for the lessons that come later.

Editorial Review:

This second book in the Telling Time sequence helps children learn how to tell time down to the minute. By using a variety of different activities to keep children engaged, this workbook helps children learn this difficult skill without feeling frustrated or anxious.

Another Excellent Book from Kumon 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

We have bought over a dozen Kumon books, and I was thrilled that they had one for teaching the basic concepts of time. Some of the other ones that my son has completed are My Book of Coloring (Kumon Workbooks), My First Book Of Tracing (Kumon Workbooks), and My Book of Mazes: Things That Go! (Kumon Workbooks). We are currently working on several others.

My son just turned three in August, but he showed a real thirst for learning. I also wanted to help him learn pencil control, especially since he is a lefty. With the help of this book, my son already has a good grasp on the passing of time, and it compliments his other work with numbers in general.

The illustrations in this book are simple and straight-forward. If your young child has trouble with their vision, they will probably have an easier time with this book versus another style. Regardless of how many pages your child completes in one session, they will always feel like they have made progress.

Some of the other workbook series we have tried are School Specialty Publishing and School Zone Publishing. Kumon is definately our favorite.

I loved using this book with my kindergarten class!! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful book to use when explaining the concept of hibernation and change of season. There is a terrific flow from page to page with a "surprise" ending that my students loved. It is a wonderful spring-board for class discussions and "acting - out" activities!

Teaches a valuable lesson 5 out of 5 stars.

My 3 year old loves this book for the beautiful illustrations of the animals and the forest during Autumn. However, one night after we read it a bedtime, she looked over at me and said that she liked "how all of the animals took care of each other." If she can get this simple, yet crucially important lesson from a children's book, I would say that the author has gone above and beyond her intentions.

Editorial Review:

A warm, inviting bedtime book from a Caldecott winning illustrator.

Bear sniffed once.
She sniffed twice.
"I smell winter in the air," said Bear. "It is time to crawl into my cave and sleep. But first I must tell Snail."

Denise Fleming presents a warm-hearted story about animals of the forest settling down for their winter nap. But, like children who must go to bed for the night, they each find a way to put it off just a little bit longer. Richly illustrated in fall colors, Denise Fleming's story book world is right on target for preschoolers.

Get 'Tails' instead 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I got this book because another Van Fleet book (Tails) has been a run-away hit with the toddlers I know. Incidentally, the book/puppet is larger than I expected, which is neither good or bad, just unexpected.

The first criticism is I was expecting a functional book puppet. While you do stick your hand into the frog and open his mouth, you have to control the pages with your free hand. The pages can be difficult to open wide enough to get a good look at them when there is a hand inside of the puppet part.

Secondly, while most storylines for kids this age are pretty weak, this one was just plain dumb - although the idea sounds promising, the book didn't deliver. It is about the different things a bullfrog eats during the week, with him eating 'you' showing a mirror on the last page. One child went into hysterics at the end when she found out the frog wanted to eat her. Granted, she's not the bravest kid in existence, but I generally try not to frighten little kids out of their wits on a regular basis.

On the positive side, the tactile elements are wonderful, as I've come to expect of Van Fleet.

It made for a nice shower present (for a boy =), but it's not something I'll keep in my kids' bookshelf - and that poor girl who was so frightened still asks about the frog when she comes over. Tails, on the other hand, is used so much that it never has time to get onto the bookshelf. If you don't have Tails, buy that instead. If you already have Tails, I would be content with that instead of getting this one.

Editorial Review:

Monday the Bullfrog Book is the multi-concept book from the best-selling author Matthew Van Fleet. This book slips onto the hand to make a puppet that introduces the days of the week with textures, colors, and colorful critters. Every page provides clues as to what is next on Mondays menu, ending with the sweetest dish of all!

Telling Time After Reading Through Once! 4 out of 5 stars.
45 of 46 people found this review helpful.

Our almost 6 year old has been wanting to be able to tell time for the past year. We've tried many different manipulatives with not much luck past the o'clocks and X:30. After reading this book just once, she's now actually telling time on analog clocks. It's slow going, but she really gets it now. Our daughter LOVES the poem at the end. It also covers calendar time - from one day to a millenium.

The book is VERY interactive in the way it's written when the parent reads to the child. My only complaint is that it's never explained about what hour it is when the hour hand is between numbers or almost on the next number.

Editorial Review:

Humorous text explains the concept of time, from seconds to hours on both analog and digital clocks, from years to millennia on the calendar.

Gentle and calming beautiful illustrations with poetic prose 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

A story set in a suburban neighborhood with a girl and her dog doing various activities as the sun rises or sets. The first part of the book is about dusk and the second part is about dawn. The text is poetic and beautiful. The text is on one page and the illustrations are on the other page; this is a larger sized hardcover book. The illustrations are beautiful paintings, all with the special hues of dusk or dawn. Some of the scenes are: the girl and dog playing in a sprinkler while bats fly overhead and fireflies fly at their feet, two fisherman on the shore of a lake, and the girl and dog taking a walk through the woods at dawn. The poetic nature of the text is rarely found in modern children's books and is a joy to read. "When the sky is full and singing with stars you know that twilight has given way to true night." This is a gentle and calming book to read.

Editorial Review:

Free-verse text describes the transition from day to night and from night to day, revealing the magic in these everyday moments.

With beautiful cut-paper art work 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

It's Winter is the third book in a highly recommended series of four titles on the various seasons, and is packed with insights about winter, beautiful cut-paper art work, and suggestions for activities to enhance an appreciation of the season. All this comes in the form of a first-person story of a girl who observes and appreciates the pleasures of winter.

Editorial Review:

A child observes the coming of winter and its effects on the weather, animals, and plants. Includes suggestions for wintertime activities.
