Editorial Review:

I know some Big Words.
I'll teach them to you.
Although you are small,
you can use Big Words too.

Big Words aren't scary.
They're big fun to learn.
I was taught once
and now it's your turn.

The eighth hilarious picture book by the #1 New York Times bestselling team of Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell helps little people communicate in a big person's world. With grown-up words like cooperate, respect, patience and considerate, a big, boisterous and zany family celebrates the power of language and discovers that words—big or little—are the bridge that connects us all.

About the Author

Jamie Lee Curtis loves big words but doesn't know how to spell many of them. She adores her family life, which includes the amazing Annie, the miraculous Tom and the hilarious and loving Christopher. She advocates for children around the world and appreciates her friends, family and colleagues. She lives in stunning and sunny southern California with her rotund dog, Frances.

not for older children 1 out of 5 stars.

I ordered this book for my granddaughter who is 8. She loves to read and loves to use big words. However, the book is geared more toward a 4 or 5 year old and is not suitable. I have not returned the book but will give it to my just born granddaughter when the time comes. Amazon should readdress the age appropriateness stated for this book.

Makes me laugh 4 out of 5 stars.

I learned a bunch of new words in this silly book about girls. My favorite words in the story are on the "G" page: Gorgeous and Glamorous. My Mom says that I am gorgeous. The book says that so-in-so is glamorous. I also like the "D" word "Dapper." I told my Dad he was "diaper" today and he laughed. I had to show him the page so he would understand; that made him laugh more! I also like to say the "O" word "Ooh la la!" This is another way of saying something is fancy. This book makes me laugh.

Parent's Comment:

"Fancy Nancy's Favorite Words: From Accessories to Zany" by Jane O'Connor is a great idea for a book, endless possibilities; maybe the author will write more. Great illustrations of adorable little girls all dressed up. Lots of fun with vocabulary!

Editorial Review:

Fancy Words Are Simply Fascinating!

From everyone's favorite fancy girl comes an alphabetical guide to enhancing vocabulary. Why say beautiful when there are fancy words like gorgeous and glamorous? Instead of hello, try bonjour, which is French and so much fancier. An umbrella will keep you dry, but a parasol will make you feel like a Hollywood movie star!

With this helpful A-to-Z guide, Fancy Nancy shows that making plain words into fancy ones is not only educational, it's fun!

Two boys' review: Suess with simpler rhymes than Fox in Socks 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is one of our first bedtime books for our sons along with "Hop on Pop" and "The Foot Book". This beginner's book provides simple rhymes that are easy to learn and repeat.

We don't read this book as much anymore. We later graduated to "Fox in Socks." My oldest has returned to this book as an early reader. (I have to mix up the pages because my boys have much of the book memorized).

An Under-rated Classic!! 5 out of 5 stars.

"Cat in the Hat" and "Green Eggs and Ham" get all the fame and glory, and I actually don't remember ever reading "One Fish Two Fish" as a child. But I've discovered this book now that I have a three year-old of my own, and it has become our favorites. Dr. Seuss is exceptionally skilled at playing with words and rhymes and coming up with hilarious, fun, well-crafted sentences. This book contains some of his best work. The books make learning language great fun. I was amazed last night when my daughter started rattling off the sentences in the book from memory as I read it to her, and she had great fun doing it. A children's book that both children and adults can appreciate and one that inspires in children a love of learning language: what more could a parent want?

And one other editorial comment...now that I've spent much time scouring the library shelves for good books for my child, I have come to have tremendous appreciation for Dr. Seuss's talent and wit. Almost all children's book authors fall far short of the standard Dr. Seuss set decades ago. Give me "One Fish Two Fish" or "The Lorax" over "The Polar Express" any day!

Editorial Review:

First published in 1963, Hop on Pop remains a perennial favorite when it comes to teaching kids to read. Here, as in most of his extensive body of work, Dr. Seuss creates uncomplicated, monosyllabic rhymes to foster learning and inspire children to read. But what was radical about this little book at the time of publication (and what makes it still compelling today) is Seuss's departure from the traditionally dull pictures and sentences used in reading primers. In contrast, the illustrations here are wild and wonderful, and the accompanying language, while simple, is delightfully silly. For example, the rhyme "THREE TREE / Three fish in a tree / Fish in a tree? / How can that be?" is brought to life with a trio of plump, self-satisfied fish perched atop globular branches as two stymied hybrid dog-rabbit-humanoids look on in consternation. Hop on Pop does much more than teach children the basics of word construction, it also introduces them to the incomparable pleasure of reading a book. (Ages Baby to Preschooler)

I love Dr. Seuss's books! This is such a cute one! My 11-mo old loves it!

Not as good as his others 3 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book because I own several other Dr. Suess board books, including Mr. Brown can Moo, Hop on Pop, the Foot Book and The Shape of Me. I like all of these books, because they contain simple rhymes, colorful pictures and are great for helping a baby learn language.

I was a bit disappointed with There's a Wocket, because most of the words are made up. I don't mind a few made up words, but all the characters in this book are made up (there's a nooth grush on my toothbrush?)

I would recommend waiting until your child is old enough to no longer need board books, and purchase the full version. I'm sure older children who are already talking would love the silly made up creatures & rhymes.

Editorial Review:

There's a Wocket in my Pocket is yet another prime catch in the vast sea of delectable Dr. Seuss books. It's difficult to find a Dr. Seuss book one wouldn't recommend highly, and this is no exception. Seuss's simple rhymes are consistently as amusing as they are useful; his books are bastions of creative nonsense that simultaneously encourage the joy of wordplay.

This edition of the 1974 treasure features vibrant full-color illustrations, with the added bonus of a virtually indestructible board-book format. Kids can hunt for the zamp in the lamp, the jertain behind the curtain, even the nooth grush on the toothbrush, and no matter how exuberant their exploring gets, the book will remain intact for the next reading. Best Kids Books 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I can't forget this book, because of it had several great factors. It covered almost every place a kid may see, with it's name to know what the object is. Each page shows kids different work spaces, lands, city life, even inside a home, room by room.
This would be an excellent book for preschoolers, and even younger as well. Children and their parents may create their own stories with the detailed scenes.

It really IS the BEST word book ever! 5 out of 5 stars.

I LOVE this book! I had it when I was a child. My favorite word in it is on the kitchen page "Batter Spoon"!!!

Great book if you don't mind having to read it all the time! 5 out of 5 stars.

My 17month daughter loves this book! I was into Richard Scarry books growing up and really wanted my baby to like it. Initially I was afraid the illustrations would be too busy for her, but that is clearly not the case. This book is one of three books (the others are big book of animals and book of words) she brings to me just about every thirty minutes, which is driving me a little crazy but I'll just have to deal with it. She really gets into the scenes especially scenes of the circus, zoo, farm, grocery, home, beach, ships, trains, etc. and has built up quite the vocabulary. She's saying the names of the animals and their sounds, bodyparts, the landscape such as tree, sun, moon, cloud, flower and can point to most anything in the pages. The scenes of the airport, trucks and "when you grow up" aren't engaging her yet but I'm sure later when she gets it more.

Richard Scarry books are a beloved classic, they are and will be on the bookshelf in our home (until the grandkids). ;)

fine children's book with lots to be learned 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Oh, the Thinks You Can Think! Is a charming book by the immortal Dr. Seuss who wrote many fine children's books in his time. Oh, the Thinks You Can Think! is no exception. This book encourages children to imagine and eventually explore the world without fear.

The book has excellent illustrations that amuse children--and adults; and the rhyming text always impresses me.

The book starts by encouraging children to use their imaginations to think up what other animals and/or places in the world may be like. This alone can stimulate a lot of conversation between you and your child about other places in the real world and what life is like there. This will go a long way toward teaching younger children about the world out there that one day they will be exploring for real. In addition, the book also has Dr. Seuss using his own imagination to give examples to children as to how to use their imaginations; we get words about foreign things and sounds like "guff" and "schlopp." This does a marvelous job of teaching children to always be optimistic.

The book has even more value. Younger children will profit from learning words critical to their growing vocabularies including yellow, blue, red, pink, black, white, night, day, left and right--and more! Excellent.

The book cover withstands some throwing around just in case your child accidentally mistreats it; and, as always, the paper quality of these books by Dr. Seuss is very good.

I highly recommend this fine children's book. It teaches much to both very young children and older children as well. Get this and enjoy it with your growing child!

Max's Words 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book because I thought it was cute (the cover intrigued me). I took it to my classroom to share with my lst grade students. They got so excited about it that they thought our class should start a word collection. So I drug out old magazines & newspapers and we began to clip and save the most fascinating words we could find. Then we decided that we should try to invent some sentences just like Max did. It was so much fun! The kids worked together for over an hour for 2 days straight. They came up with several sentences. We posted them in our hallway along with a review of the book. They are so proud! I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has anything to do with children!

Editorial Review:

Max’s brothers have grand collections that everyone makes a big fuss over. Benjamin collects stamps and Karl collects coins, and neither one will share with their little brother. So Max decides to start a collection of his own. He’s going to collect words. He starts with small words that he cuts out of newspapers and magazines, but soon his collection has spilled out into the hall. All the while, his brothers are watching. Benjamin brags that he has one thousand stamps. Karl is just a few coins short of five hundred. But a thousand stamps is really just a bunch of stamps, and a lot of coins is only a heap of money. A pile of words, however, can make a story.

Bright, bold pictures incorporating clever wordplay accompany this highly original tale about a younger brother’s ingenuity.

Excellent book 5 out of 5 stars.

Our daughter loves the Super Why series and this book is cute in attempting to explain why Santa comes on Christmas. I also like how it emphasizes making gifts from your heart (if you are inclined to do the gift thing) which makes both you and the recipient happy. Our daughter is three and is absolutely mesmerized by the pages, the pictures and the story. She loves to find the Super Letters and wants to read this book again and again. The pages are high-quality - they seem to be a bit thicker than your average book (nice for three-year-old hands) and I think we're going to have a hard time putting it away after Christmas. :)

Editorial Review:

The Super Readers are on a special mission to find out why Santa Claus visits children on Christmas. To find the answer to their question, the Super Readers fly into the classic story “’Twas the Night Before Christmas”. While in the story, the Super Readers meet Santa and discover that he visits all the children because it makes both him and them happy.

When Jill isn’t being nice to Pig, the Super Readers fly into the story “The Three Little Pigs.” There they come face to face with the Big Bad Wolf, who also struggles with making friends. Along the way, the Super Readers learn a lesson about friendship, practice the alphabet, rhyme with “-all” words, and use opposite words to change the story.
