Editorial Review:

Work, Work, Work is the story of an industrious gopher whose lifework is to burrow from dawn to dusk under an enchanted land that he never sees. While he grumbles about his unceasing labors, the morning sky is spray-painted from a dirigible (and the sun gets a drop of blue in its eye), two UFOs from different planets meet for a strange exchange, an enormous octopus-like creature (who has just come from laying waste to Las Vegas) is subdued by a barrage of hats, hotdogs, and toasters, and, at the close of day, a window opens at the horizon so that a purple giant can hang the moon in the sky. Surfacing in the twilight, the gopher sighs, “Well, at least something happened. I ran into a rock!”
Parents will find that Work, Work, Work, with its colorful and detailed illustrations, is something different from the usual. It’s a book that brings readers and read-to together in a highly interactive entertainment, with the child investigating and elucidating all the strange goings-on that occur above the gopher’s underground travels.

Editorial Review:

"Good friends always stick together. That's what Charlie Rooster, Johnny Mouse and fat Percy, the pig, always said -- and that was what they did all day long. First they woke the other animals in the barn; then they went off adventuring on their bicycle, along the roughest paths and up the steepest cliffs, quite fearlessly.

One day they stopped by the village pond to play hide-and-seek. Hiding in the tall grass, Johnny Mouse discovered an old boat. The three friends decided to play pirate and later turned to fishing. When they failed to catch any fish, they went off and picked cherries to satisfy their hunger. By nightfall, they were tired and ready to sleep, but they wanted to stay together. Only disaster resulted from their attempts first to spend the night in Johnny Mouse's house, next in fat Percy's pigsty and finally in Charlie Rooster's henhouse! But though they had to sleep in their own beds, they dreamed of each other, the way true friends do.

This is a joyful book, an exhilarating celebration of friendship. Its lovely, fresh watercolor paintings by the author/artist, Helme Heine, who is widely known for his earlier book, The Pigs Wedding, are filled with carefree exuberance, childlike humor and an irresistible sense of happy sharing that will captivate young and old. This is a treasure not to be missed.

Moja Means One - a review 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a lovely little book by a couple who have lived and taught in East Africa. They obviously loved the experience because they were inspired to produce this Caldecott winner.

Though the book was written with African-American children in mind, I believe all children can benefit from reading it. Each number is accompanied by a two-page grayscale drawing. The lack of color may be a problem for younger readers. My 3 year-old son, for example, was not interested in a second read-through. My 5 year-old daughter however was intrigued by how African culture (grantedly of the late 1960's) was different from our own. The counting was not of particular interest to us but all of the other aspects of non-urban African life were.

Pictures depicted are snowy Kilimanjaro, a children's game called Mankala, coffee trees, mothers carrying their babies on their backs (which we now do in the US), savanna animals, styles of dress, Nile river fish, busy market stalls, musicians and their instruments, and, at last, a storyteller entrancing young listeners.

My only complaint is that there is not more to this book: more beautiful drawings; and more explanations of the activities that are depicted. Still a nice book for children who seek an introduction to the broader world.

Editorial Review:

"Primarily a Swahili counting book, Moja Means One is also meant to be a gift of heritage, a glimpse of what is unique about East Africa."--School Library Journal. Full color.

My kids adore this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The younger loves the beautiful pictures and singing along. The older loves looking for all the little details in the pictures. They both love substituting the names of the characters for their own friends' names! Both learned their colors through this book without realizing what they were actually doing. This is one book I don't mind reading over and over.

This is the first book I ever learned to read 5 out of 5 stars.

I remember reading this book back in kindergarten and the first grade. It was the first book I ever learned to read. I loved this book so much that I read it until I had it memorized. It's too bad the original cover is not printed in this edition. I'm going to pass this one down to my cousin, Adam, whose only 4. Hopefully, we can continue the tradition so this will be his first book he ever learns to read.

Amazingly Fun Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book for my nephew and the entire family has enjoyed his singing the pages, he had it memorized in no time and he is only 2 years old!!! I would recommend this book to anyone with young children, not just for their enjoyment but for the entire family.

4 1/2* Hide and Seek at Spots Birthday Party 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Spot plays hide and seek at his birthday party in Eric Hill's great series for both young and slightly older toddlers. The guests are hidden under flaps, but both Spot and your reader can find clues to who's hiding even before lifting the flap (e.g., a silhouette, a banana peel, his mom's tail sticking out from beneath a table). Bright colors and a variety of uncovered animals make this a fun book, though the title is a bit misleading. The book really has very little to do with Spot's birthday until the very last page, when all the animals are shown bringing presents. The bold black text also makes this a nice book for the beginning reader. 22 pages.

Inappropriate for the Baby/Preschool age, as recommended 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I was disappointed with "Spot's Birthday Party" because the format was totally inappropriate for the Baby/Preschool age-group I searched/purchased under. The inside pages are paper (which, believe it or not, isn't an issue even tho I have 2-year-old twins). The problem isn't the paper, per se, but that it's paper pages WITH FLAPS for the kids to open and close. My kids are gonna want to open those flaps, and since the pages/flaps are flimsy paper instead of cardboard, those flaps are going to stay on for only two or three readings--max. [Suggestion: the only lift-the-flap books that you recommend for this age-group should be cardboard books with cardboard pages.]

Editorial Review:

Spot and his animal friends play hide-and-seek at his birthday party. Flaps conceal the hidden guests.

Very cute 5 out of 5 stars.

My little girl loves this book! This book features Cookie Monster as he prepares for a dinner party for some of his friends. The story is told in rhyme and it's full of pictures of Sesame Street characters. There are a few "interactive" parts whre Cookie Monster addresses the reader. This is destined to become a quick favorite.

This is my kind of book! 3 out of 5 stars.

What better way to set up your kid's eating disorders than a nice cookie monster book for toddlers? So settle down with some cookies and read this book with a loved one.

Great story, grammar not the best for pre-readers 4 out of 5 stars.

The story of Cookie Monster planning a turkey dinner is fantastic and our 3 year old LOVES it. It's very fun to read even for mom and dad! My only complaint is that the book is written in Cookie Monster-ese. For example, instead of saying "I want to cook a dinner, I need some help from you", this book says "Me want to cook a dinner, me need some help from you". We just change the words to speak the sentence correctly and everyone ends up happy!

Editorial Review:

Cookie is planning a party! There's a lot to do--make invitations, shop, clean the house, and cook. But Cookie's favorite time is when all of his Sesame Street friends are seated at the table and he says, "Let's eat!"

Perfect for one-year-olds! 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I've read this book so many times to my 15-month-old, I can recite it from memory! He started going nuts for it around the time he turned one; that's when he wanted a little more of a story line. This book and the other three in the group (Maisy's Bedtime, Maisy Dresses Up, and Maisy's Pool) are one step up from the one-picture-and-one-word per page kinds of books for babies, but not so high up that they start having way too much text per page. A typical page in this book is "Maisy puts the cookies in the oven." Just one simple sentence and one wonderful bright Lucy Cousins illustration per page-spread; ten page-spreads total.

Thoroughly engaging! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

All the Maisy books are wonderful, and this is no exception. The text is simple and straightforward, but the illustrations are where the book really shines. Bold and bright, they are attractive to everyone from the youngest child to adults. My 2-year-old daughter asks for her Maisy books again and again, and currently this and "Count with Maisy" are her favorites. In this book Maisy bakes cookies in simple steps (including licking the bowl!) and then Charley and Tallulah stop by just in time to have a cookie shaped just like them. It's so much fun it makes it easy to read it again and again when your child asks for the same book every night!

Editorial Review:

Maisy the mouse makes gingerbread cookies and shares them with her friends Charley and Tallulah.

Entering a Magic World 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

"Our Big Home: An Earth Poem" is a delight for both children and adults. The words and images on each page joyfully engage the child in each of us to awaken to the interconnectedness of all life. If you're looking for a book to inspire and reinforce a young child's sense of wonder, I recommmend "Our Big Home." Linda Glaser's text is poetic, informative and sunny, with an enticing, playful lilt throughout. The accompanying illustrations by noted children's book artist Elisa Kleven are brimful of charming details that children will enjoy discovering and re-examining over and over. The poet Hopkins once said, "There lives the dearest freshness deep down things." Remember how a book in your childhood opened up a whole new world? This book captures that "dearest freshness" of our "big home" in a magical way.

Editorial Review:

A beautifully illustrated celebration of the air and water and soil and sky and sun and rain that we all share! Long-time Millbrook favorite Linda Glaser teams with best-selling illustrator Elisa Kleven in this clear and direct concept book about the coexistence of human beings with other living things in this big home we call Earth.

A Wonderful Way To Read With Your Child 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The format of this book and the others like them give a young reader a very enjoyable experience. The adult side helps to embellish the story but the children's side lets a new reader be part of the story not just a listener. Our first grader takes great pride in his part of the book and seems to have better comprehension. These are a great find.

A delightful gem 4 out of 5 stars.

Generally, I do not care for audio books; many of the readers speak in a dull voice that rapidly drives me either away from the story or to sleep. However, there are a few exceptions; this is one.

Understand, that this is not the normal audio book; this edtion has a large cast of actors who collaborated to produce this item as a fund raiser for Starbright.

The result is an ensemble piece that is witty and charming. Part of the fun for me, was guessing who was reading before looking at the cast list included in the box.

Other folks feel that this isn't for children; I don't know as I don't have children, but I found that my "inner child" was highly entertained for 40 minutes with this tape.

If you are a fan of one or more of the actors in this edition or like puns (there are many here!), then you will probably like the Starbright edtion of the Emporer's New Clothes.

Editorial Review:

"I love clothes," cries the Emperor, and he's not kidding. He doesn't care a fig for anything or anybody else--he doesn't have to, he's the Emperor. What a spoiled pig! He's so vain and stuck-up that he's the perfect target for two sly swindlers, who weave him a suit of clothes no one will ever forget--especially not the Emperor!

One of my son's favorites! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

My two-year-old absolutely loves this book. Unlike most of the other good books for expectant siblings, this book doesn't discuss any abivalent feelings concerning a new baby. While this could be a detriment in another book, here it seems beautifully appropriate. The autobiographical main character, Tommy, wants a baby sister more than anything else, and the happy ending comes when he gets his wish and meets his little sister. This is a beautifully simple and charming story with lovely, gentle pictures. I know that this book helped us to announce our pregnancy to my son. Even though he has other books on this topic, 'The Baby Sister' is his favorite, with 'Julius, the Baby of the World' taking a close second.

The Baby Sister 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The Baby Sister is a great book with gorgeous illustrations. The illustrations are very colorful, which attracts the eye of the reader. Tommy, the character of the book, is anticipating the birth of his baby sister. Unlike most youngsters, Tommy is excited and eager for his sister to join the family. He specifically wants a baby sister with a red ribbon in her hair, which I thought was very funny and cute. And what do you know, his wish comes true!
This book would be great for a classroom because students can voice their feelings about the time a baby brother/baby sister came into the family. Some would be able to relate to Tommy, some might not. This is a very family oriented book, which portrays love and care.

Editorial Review:

Follows the story of young Tommy, who reluctantly prepares for the birth of a new baby sister while interacting with his strict Italian grandmother Nana, whom he comes to appreciate during a busy time.
