This is a coloring book! 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

They describe this as being a board book with great illustrations, but it's not. It's a coloring book! I was very disappointed when receiving this in the mail because we're big Eric Carle fans and I was expecting to find a book of his colorful characters and numbers. A real let down.

Nice Counting Book 5 out of 5 stars.

My 3 year old likes this book as part of her at home preschool curriculum. It only counts up to ten, but I thought we'd try it just to add something to our usual math books. We don't just read straight through though, we interact with each other and the book by discussing as we go along. Today was the first time we read it & she had me read it twice. I would recommend it for anyone who likes Eric Carle's artistic style and is looking for a simple counting book for a young child.

My toddler loves this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book! I'm surprised it says for 4-8, I think younger would be perfect! We've had this book since my daughter was 1, she's 2 now, and she loves it! We talk about counting, sounds, names, colors, so many concepts in here, it's great!

I am very impressed and pleased with "A Pocketful of Kisses". It is an excellent sequel to "The Kissing Hand" whether or not there is another baby expected into the family. The book is well written; the illustrations amazing!! I recommend this book to anyone with a special "little one" in their lives!

This book was first introduced to me by my daughters preschool teacher. This book not only has a nice story for young children, but has beautiful illustrations. My children enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoy reading it to them.

New sibling book 5 out of 5 stars.

The book I purchased was in brand new condition and shipped quickly. Thank you. The book itself is an adorable follow up to The Kissing Hand and perfect for a young child becoming a big brother/sister. My son loves it!

Meet Oswald! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My children love the show and so I bought this book for them. They love it. It is repeative as Oswald keeps meeting more and more neighbors in Big City. This type of repeative reading is good for young children. Funny sounds and friendly characters adds to the charm of this tale of how Oswald meets all of his friends.

Editorial Review:

Moving to Big City is certainly an adventure for Oswald the Octopus. When he and his pet hot dog, Weenie, arrive at their new apartment, they realize they need some help moving Oswald's treasured piano. It's very heavy. But Oswald doesn't know anyone in Big City. Who will help him?

One by one, Oswald's friendly neighbors offer to help. Soon Oswald and Weenie meet Henry the Penguin, Johnny Snowman, the Egg Twins, and many other charming characters. And before they know it they've made lots of new friends.

Written and illustrated by Dan Yaccarino, a distinguished artist, this cheerful picture book will surely win over many new friends for Oswald and the folks of Big City.

Better versions out there... 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is not the best version available of this fairytale...Stephen Carpenter's is much better. In this version, the illustration and text don't even match. The troll is described as having a nose as long as a poker and eyes as big as saucers...but the troll in the pictures has a bulbous nose and unremarkable eyes. I don't know if it's an exact translation from Norwegian, but the grammar is occasionally ackward. The metaphors in the speech given by the biggest Billy Goat to the troll have to be explained to a younger audience...which isn't bad in itself but contributes to the uneven flow in the text. The pictures are good, too bad the writing isn't.

A Classic Children's Book 5 out of 5 stars.

When I was younger I would read this book every night before going to bed. I now have a three-year-old sister that I thought would appreciate the story as much as I did. She loved it, this book is a classic through and through.

Thank you for sending the book. I lost my copy and all the libraries around here said their copies were lost. It made the classroom enjoy doing their writing/reading assignment. They could compare and write easier because of your quickness in sending the book.

Wonderful children's book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book, based on the folk song, is delightful. It is imaginatively, whimsically, and humorously illustrated. There is an "Old Lady" rag doll that comes with all the creatures she swallows and can be placed in her mouth as the book is read. I bought both to give to a child as a gift.

This is a delightful read! 5 out of 5 stars.

My daughter had this book when she was 2 and she LOVED it. Now I'm a home daycare provider and my daycare kids love it. It has a great rythme and funny pictures. I haven't had one child who was scared yet. I have been doing daycare for 3 yrs.

Absolutely adorable! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is fantastic. Not only does it review the trials and tribulations of the old lady in the song I remember from my days at camp, but it is accompanied by hysterical illustrations that keep my husband and I both thoroughly entertained as we read/ sing the book to our son, who adores the book. People who would find the illustrations scary and disturbing are most likely also the people who believe Road Runner cartoons are too violent. We think this book is fabulous... but then again we always cheered for Wile E. Coyote...

Editorial Review:

A cumulative folk song in which the solution proves worse than the predicament when an old lady swallows a fly.

A Beautiful Book & Great Story 5 out of 5 stars.

The illustrations in this book are wonderful. A true artist. Very cleverly hides the elves in each page and its much fun for a 3 year old to find them and the mice and birds too.

excellent retelling of classic Grimm fairy tale 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is a wonderful companion to any collection of classic fairy tales. The illustrations are lively and charming; the tale is retold simply and well. This book also does an excellent job of conveying what a cobbler does, if you are looking for some books to bring history alive. Not many children now think twice about where their shoes come from. Above all else, the illustrations really bring the tale alive. The quality of the expressions on each character's face is truly incredible and any small child can easily "read" along by seeing the delight on the faces of the customers, the patience and careful work done by the elves (you can practically hear them whistle as they work), the astonishment and gratitude felt by the shoemaker and his wife. This heartwarming story is a must for any preschool or first grade classroom.

Editorial Review:

A poor old shoemaker becomes successful with the help of two elves who finish his shoes during the night.

Make your kid into a pizza 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Petes's in a bad mood because he can't go oult to play with his friends on this rainy day. To cheer him up and pass the time, his dad invents a fun and unique game. He is going to make a pizza out of Pete! The book is very amusing as the dad rolls the dough (Pete) and sprinkles cheese (paper) and tomatoes (checkers) on the pizza. This could be a wonderful game to play with your own children. Loads of fun to be had.

A cute read! 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful and exciting book for all family members of every age. It's sturdy, nicely illustrated, easy to hold and to read. Talk about love in the family, this book illustrates to parents the importance of communicating, touching, and just having a good time with our children. Pete's a Pizza brings out the child in adults and keeps the child in children.

Editorial Review:

Pete's father starts kneading the dough. Next, some oil is generously applied. (Its really water.) And then some tomatoes. (They're really checkers.) When the dough gets tickled, it laughs like crazy.

Totally Awful 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Hey, I'm a lesbian mom myself. I have two great kids. I was given this book as a gift. What a horrible book. Difficult to read, full of 1970s impossible to comprehend propaganda. Almost seems like the crazy right-wing wrote it, there is so much to object to. How on earth is artificial insemination a subject for kids, and if it was, surely there is a less textbook, more creative positive way to portray it?? Surely. At best, this book is an artifact of good intentions, and little more.

A wonderful book 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

First of all, I'd like to mention that most of the bad reviews here are for the original edition and not the 10th anniversary edition. The latter contains no mention of artificial insemination or any other particularly controversial subjects. It is a sweet story in which Heather attends her first day of school and joins her class in talking about their families and drawing their pictures. All kinds of families are represented in this book, and Heather and her mothers are represented as a normal loving family. Also, an informative note from the author explains her reasons for changing the text for the tenth anniversary edition, which addresses the problems some reviewers had with the book as it was originally written.

Editorial Review:

Heather's favorite number is two. She has two arms, two legs, two eyes, two ears, two hands, and two feet. Heather also has two mommies, Mama Jane and Mamma Kate.

Cute and a bit creepy 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I had a copy of this book when I was a little girl, and I loved it. It is a slightly disturbing story of a lonely, needy doll who more than anything doesn't want to be alone, and makes friends with two teddy bears.

It's primarily a picture book of photographs of Edith, the doll, and her two teddy bear friends posed in scenes to help tell the story. As much as I like this book, I don't think that it's for everyone. Even when I was four or five years old I knew that something wasn't quite right with the story and that Edith was a little desperate.

There is a dark quality to the mood of some of the pictures and Edith has some abandonment issues. There is a part in the book where Mr. Bear spanks Edith (Edith over Mr.Bear's knees with skirts up and doll panties showing). Edith says she doesn't care about the spanking, as long as Mr. Bear doesn't leave.

There was a book written about Dare Wright(AKA- Edith) and apparently she was abandoned by her father and brother(played by Mr. Bear and Little Bear) and well...you get the picture.(no pun intended)

So, if you are a bit dark and twisted, like me, you will probably dig this book and the other Lonely Doll books. Maybe even check out the biography on Dare. If you are looking for a book for your child, the pictures are interesting, but be aware that it's a story about a maladjusted doll.

Editorial Review:

Once there was a little doll. Her name was Edith. She lived in a nice house and had everything she needed except someone to play with. She was lonely! Then one morning Edith looked into the garden and there stood two bears! Since it was first published in 1957, The Lonely Doll has established itself as a unique children's classic. Through innovative photography Dare Wright brings the world of dolls to life and entertains us with much more than just a story. Edith, the star of the show, is a doll from Wright's childhood, and Wright selected the bear family with the help of her brother. With simple poses and wonderful expressions, the cast of characters is vividly brought to life to tell a story of friendship.
