Editorial Review:

Dark forces are at work at the House of Night and fledgling vampyre Zoey Redbird’s adventures at the school take a mysterious turn.  Those who appear to be friends are turning out to be enemies.  And oddly enough, sworn enemies are also turning into friends.  So begins the gripping third installment of this “highly addictive series” (Romantic Times), in which Zoey’s mettle will be tested like never before.  Her best friend, Stevie Rae, is undead and struggling to maintain a grip on her humanity. Zoey doesn’t have a clue how to help her, but she does know that anything she and Stevie Rae discover must be kept secret from everyone else at the House of Night, where trust has become a rare commodity.  Speaking of rare: Zoey finds herself in the very unexpected and rare position of having three boyfriends. Mix a little bloodlust into the equation and the situation has the potential to spell social disaster.  Just when it seems things couldn’t get any tougher, vampyres start turning up dead. Really dead. It looks like the People of Faith, and Zoey’s horrid step-father in particular, are tired of living side-by-side with vampyres.  But, as Zoey and her friends so often find out, how things appear rarely reflects the truth…

Pride and Prejudice 3 out of 5 stars.

For the first time ever, I liked the movie (w/Colin Firth version) way better than the book.

A Wonderful Read 5 out of 5 stars.

There are few things more comforting in this world that sitting down with "Pride and Prejudice" and a steaming mug of tea. My mother first introduced me to the world of Jane Austen when I was quite young and I will say that this novel is one of the most battered books on my shelf due to how many times I have read it - at least once per annum. For years, audiences have been charmed by the likes of Elizabeth Bennet, the story's sharp-witted heroine, and admired the well-born Mr. Darcy, her verbal sparring partner. There is evidence to suggest that this novel in particular held a special place in Austen's heart, though one could hardly fault her if this is the case.

It is impossible for me to resist being drawn in by the Bennet family - the tale of five sisters and an estate entailed away to particularly ridiculous male relation. Though it may be "a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife," the prospects of marriage for any of the girls are far from ideal. However, more than love and marriage, character takes the center stage of this novel and within its pages is material enough for endless study and enjoyment.

I hesitate to say too much more than that this novel is simply a joy to read; it certainly deserves its place in the literary cannon, withstanding the tests of time. I wish that all young girls would read it so that we may have more Janes and Elizabeths and fewer Lydias. I would also freely recommend a viewing of the 6 hour A&E film after you turn the final page, as it truly does justice to the story - not to mention Colin Firth makes a particularly dashing Darcy.

Editorial Review:

It's time to rediscover the wonderful books we all cherish.

Originally published anonymously in 1813, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is one of the most widely read and most popular novels in the English language. The courtship between the independent Elisabeth Bennett and the handsome yet arrogant Mr. Darcy illuminates the page in this wonderful novel of comedy and manners.

Editorial Review:

In this comprehensive and entertaining resource, David Macaulay reveals the inner workings of the human body as only he could. In order to present this complicated subject in an accurate and entertaining way, he put in years of research. He sat in on anatomy classes, dissections, and even reached inside the rib cages of two cadavers to compare their spleen sizes. He observed numerous surgeries, including a ten-hour procedure where a diseased pancreas was removed, as well as one where a worn-out old knee was replaced by a brand new one. This hands-on investigation gives Macaulay a unique perspective to lead his readers on a visual journey through the workings of the human body.

The seven sections within the book take us from the cells that form our foundation to the individual systems they build. Each beautifully illustrated spread details different aspects of our complex structure, explaining the function of each and offering up-close glimpses, unique cross-sections and perspectives, and even a little humor along the way. This one-of-a-kind book can serve as a reference for children, families, teachers, and anyone who has questions about how his or her body works. When readers see how David Macaulay builds a body and explains the way it works, they will come away with a new appreciation of the amazing world inside them.

A Stunning and Poignant Conclusion to the Books of Ember 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Jeanne DuPrau has written beautiful and poignant conclusion to the story of the City of Ember. As always,
the writing is perfect, with just the right combination of adventure and thoughtfulness. In this last book we
see what the future holds for Lina and Doon and while we are left with a feeling of hopefulness, there is also
a certain sadness as we see Ember fade in the distance. I hope to see more books from this creative and
talented writer in the future and recommend all the books of Ember to readers of any age.

Editorial Review:

It’s been several months since Lina and Doon escaped the dying city of Ember and, along with the rest of their people, joined the town of Sparks. Now, struggling through the harsh winter aboveground, they find an unusual book. Torn up and missing most of its pages, it alludes to a mysterious device from before the Disaster, which they believe is still in Ember. Together, Lina and Doon must go back underground to retrieve what was lost and bring light to a dark world.

In the fourth Book of Ember, bestselling author Jeanne DuPrau juxtaposes yet another action-packed adventure with powerful themes about hope, learning, and the search for truth.

A Great Start To A Fantastic Series 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This is the type of book that gets you hooked. You start reading and are enjoying it, but then the more you read the better it gets, the more you like it, you feel involved in the drama and action and want to help the characters, help them solve the mysteries and problems. I highly reccommend this book. It has an air of mystery and intrigue about it that fills you with curiosity for what will happen next. The author can perfectly relate to you the characters thoughts and feelings and not one emotion is out of place. The novel is not highly predictable so you don't feel like it's a waste of time to finish. This book has light humor in it and would be good for kids aged 8-12. It will even satisfy fantasy and sci-fi lovers alike. Not at all confusing, expertly written and worthy of five stars.

Editorial Review:

NOW A MAJOR motion picture starring Bill Murray, Tim Robbins, Martin Landau, Saoirse Ronan, and Harry Treadaway! This tie-in edition of The City of Ember features a movie-art cover and an 8-page photo insert. Jeanne DuPrau’s instant classic tells the story of the great, underground city of Ember, designed as a last refuge for the human race. But when the storerooms run out of food and the lights begin to fail, it’s up to two teens, Lina and Doon, to decipher the fragments of an ancient parchment and find a way out of Ember.

APA: the easy way 5 out of 5 stars.

Easy to follow- very helpful!!!!!!!!!!!!I return back to college to do my masters in nursing after a 10 plus absence, I had a lot of difficulty following the APA style but this book kept it simple and gave clear examples.I did recommend it to classmates who were experiencing the same difficulties and the reaction was positive. Thank you

Excellent, concise reference 5 out of 5 stars.

Having used MLA for all of my past academic work, I was completely baffled by APA's rules and intricacies. This concise reference helped me overcome my anxiety in one evening. My scores on APA style have been perfect since buying this book. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

This handbook is a quick and simplified guide to the APA writing style. It was developed as a condensed version of the official APA Publication Manual and designed to be utilized as a supplement to the actual guide.

The handbook is divided into three parts. Part one focuses on the mechanics of APA format as well as internal text citations; part two emphasizes the actual reference page entries; and part three provides a sample paper.

Love it! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I gave this to my daughter when she turned 5. It is a fun book, but helped my daughter express how she is feeling. There is a face in the back of the book that they can change to show different feelings. I recently bought two more of these books as gifts for little girls turning 5.

Such a sweet, intelligent children's book 5 out of 5 stars.

The Grandkids love this book! It's fun toread and they think the pictures are funny.

Might be better for older children, but what 4 yr old has a boyfriend? 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for my 3 year old and after one read I have put it away for a few years. Talk of boyfriends and crushes is something that can wait until she is a bit older. The illustrations are nice and the concept is good, but it is off the mark for the younger ones.

Feelings are oh-so important 5 out of 5 stars.

Recognizing our feelings and being able to name and claim them is so important to our emotional health. A meaningful book that travels through the variety of feelings a child may encounter in any day - from angry to joyful to confused to lonely to.... A wide range of feelings are included in this charming rhyme. This is a fun book which can start discussions about how we are feeling while emphazing to children that all feelings are valid. Ben Keckler, author of Incredibly Lonely, That's Me

Editorial Review:

A child's emotions range from silliness to anger to excitement, coloring and changing each day.

A Giant Leap Ahead 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I loved the original SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES. I devoured the whole set of five books within the same day. At the end of THE WRATH OF MULGARATH, Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi had hinted that there might be more to the Spiderwick story, and that definitely made me excited. A GIANT PROBLEM is now book two in the new BEYOND THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES series, and I must say that it's taken until this book to really make me enjoy these further adventures.

The story picks up immediately from book number one, and I had to go glance back through THE NIXIE'S SONG to remember different plot details. Pretty much, Nick and Laurie are off on further adventures to stop the coming onslaught of giants destroying by fire the whole of the state of Florida. A daunting task for two kids and a blind old man named Noseeum Jack. I had been hoping all along through the first book and in beginning this second one that the story would grow beyond stopping giants from randomly destroying things. Yes, the problem seemed large, but just not enough for me -- especially after the original five books. That's why I was pleasantly surprised and chilled to come to the twist ending of A GIANT PROBLEM. It took the whole series to a new height, and I am extremely excited to get my hands on book number three, which I won't even tell the title of since it holds a bit of the secret.

The writing is as usual superb, and the illustrations dazzling in that throwback style that DiTerlizzi is so brilliant at. Just looking at his drawings sucks the reader into another world. My only complaint is that I had to wait so long for book number two. I really hope that we don't have to wait another year before the final installment.

Editorial Review:

Talk about out of the frying pan, into the fire! I was pretty sure that my freaky stepsister and that freaky field guide of hers would ruin my life. But now it looks like they're going to ruin all of Florida, too! Okay, maybe that's not fair. Maybe all these stupid giants would be waking up anyway, but if it wasn't for her and that book, I'd be home playing video games and this would be someone else's giant problem!

A Wonderful Classic 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book touched me as a young girl. I think I read it about ten times growing up. It is a wonderful story about courage, survival, isolation, and trust. It is an amazing adventure and I recommend it for all children. The book is deserving of awards but I would have loved it even if it had been an obscure story that never won awards - there are a lot of good stories out there that are like that. I am going to buy an extra copy of this for a little niece, so she will have it to read in a few years. I think this type of book has the power to mold and shape lives, who we are and who we will become.

An empowering adventure story 5 out of 5 stars.

What a great book! Virtually every part of this book is writing at it's very best.

The setting is magical. Odell seems to tell us about another part of the island and the water with each chapter. I wish he had made a companion book to just explore the island.

The young girl is amazing. She's making spears, building huts, killing devil fish, dogs, and the like, she's exploring nearby islands, trying to escape. There's so many ways to describe her, but the simplest and the best has to be: COURAGOUS.

What I like about this book, is that Odell helps the young reader talk about some issues of life that for many young people is not talked about, subjects like loneliness, independence, loyalty, and death. This is a book that can start a great many discussions between teacher and student, and parent and student.

What makes this book even cooler for me is that it is based in large part on a true story!

I have to say that this book is truly one of, if not the greatest newbery books ever written.

Editorial Review:

The gripping story of young Karana, who survives by herself for eighteen years on a deserted island off the California coast.

Deplorable 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book heaps wickedness, cruelty, evil, and despair on its main character, and through him, on your child.

The pitiless scorn of his family, the contempt of the mouse council and all the mice, and the death sentence with which the tiny young mouse is condemned, all for being good, all for being different... all within the first few chapters... to offer this to a child as children's literature is utterly corrupt.

To give children's literature characters who engage in psychological torture for fun, like the rats... or a character whose father sells her for trinkets to a man who beats her until she loses her hearing, like Miggery, or a king who GIVES UP on the search for his captive daughter because it is simply too difficult... what is this book burdening my children with? I stopped reading it to them after Despereaux fell in love with the princess and was summoned to the council.

I read the rest of the book to myself, with a growing sense of disgust that somehow the Newbery award was granted to this putrid book. To recommend this book to other parents would be an act of depravity. To write it for children must have taken an unimaginable level of malice toward innocence and beauty.

Editorial Review:

This is the story of Desperaux Tilling, a mouse in love with music, stories, and a princess named Pea. It is also the story of Miggery Sow, a slow-witted serving girl with a simple, impossible wish. These characters are about to embark on a journey that will lead them down into a horrible dungeon, up into a glittering castle, and ultimately, into each other's lives.

And what happens then?

Listeners, it is your destiny to find out.
