An Ozark Requiem - Where the Red Fern Grows 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Being an avid reader my whole life, I don't know how I skipped over this book as a kid. Recently I decided to brush up on some classic literature, and I grabbed this off my bookshelf...wow. This has to be one of the most AMAZING American tales of all time...and it's definitely in my top five books ever.

Warning: it has a little flavor of Bridge to Terebithia in it because of it's terribly bittersweet ending...but it is well worth it.

The writing style is so easy to read and so engrossing, it's like the author is actually sitting across from you telling you the story.

This is a slice of Americana that all kids should read...it captures the Ozarks and the heart of a little boy who loves his dogs so well! The fact that the main character had to work so hard for what he wanted is such a wonderful message to kids today.

Where the Red Fern Grows is a little piece of the American dream, and it is a must read for everyone. No questions asked.

Editorial Review:

Billy, Old Dan and Little Ann -- a Boy and His Two Dogs...

A loving threesome, they ranged the dark hills and river bottoms of Cherokee country. Old Dan had the brawn, Little Ann had the brains -- and Billy had the will to train them to be the finest hunting team in the valley. Glory and victory were coming to them, but sadness waited too. And close by was the strange and wonderful power that's only found...

An exciting tale of love and adventure you'll never forget.

The enchanter Count Harken is back to take his revenge on the Red King's heirs, starting with Charlie Bone's family! Charlie's ancestor has been kidnapped and imprisoned in the dark, forbidding land of Badlock, and it's up to Charlie to save him. Traveling through a painting to the terrifying countryside, Charlie and his best friend's dog, Runner Bean, take up the quest. But when Runner Bean gets trapped, Charlie needs the help of his friends. Can they get past an army of trolls, rescue Runner Bean and Charlie's ancestor, and get out before it's too late?

Can Charlie outwit Court Harken and his sinister troops, or will the prisoners be doomed to being held captive in Badlock forever?

A Holocaust tale appropriate for younger readers 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

10-year-old Annemarie Johannesen narrates this story (based on real events) set in Denmark during WWII. The Danish resistance arranged to transport many Jews to safety in Sweden after they found out that Jews were being sent to concentration camps by the Nazis.

Annemarie is not Jewish, but her best friend, Ellen, is. Annemarie's family helps smuggle Ellen and her parents, along with several other Jewish families, out of the country. Lowry manages to give the reader a sense of the horror of the Holocaust without going into graphic detail.

Wonderful book 5 out of 5 stars.

Every few years I read this book over and love it every time. It is a great book to introduce kids to the plight of the Jews and non-Jews of German-occupied countries during WWII. My 10 year old read it and loved it too and it brought up a lot of questions. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her best friend Ellen Rosen often think of life before the war. It's now 1943 and their life in Copenhagen is filled with school, food shortages, and the Nazi soldiers marching through town. When the Jews of Denmark are "relocated," Ellen moves in with the Johansens and pretends to be one of the family. Soon Annemarie is asked to go on a dangerous mission to save Ellen's life.

Red Carpet HOT!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

The answer to your question is YES! You want this! You need this!! You gotta have this book right now!!!
For those of you who have the first Paper Fashions from which, there's no denying, you could get evening and wedding gowns out of, Paper Fashions Fancy is especially for all those Prom Queen nights and red carpet gala events, and let me tell you, the shoes are so much yummier in this one and there are tiara stencils!! Likewise, you can get fabulous daywear from the Fancy one too, and combining the two books-well, by the time I'm done, I'll probably need walk-in closets just for my teeny paper creations!! Endless possiblities just got more endless!!
For those of you who haven't yet discovered the delights of the original Paper Fashions, why not? Just kidding! It's not necessary to have both-just very highly recommended!!

Okay, so with this book you get;
*3 packs of sequins, beads and a sheet of sticky gems
*ribbons-5 little bundles this time, and gold thread too
*all new paper-it's brighter, printier (new word!), sparklier and includes a sheet of printed vellum and flocked paper too (like velvet)
*there's a cute little tube of pva glue and of course, 20 tiny hangers!
*there are 3 pages of soft plastic stencils that feature everything you need-new tops and skirts (that you combine to make dresses) and accessories, like Jackie O type hats, and dress trains, little evening bags and even the A-list must have, shades!
*there are clear, easy to understand instructions with diagrams, on using the stencils, scissor tips, gluing tips and plenty of examples throughout to jumpstart your own stylin' creativity!
*there are even tips about using color, patterns and creating sketch and inspiration books!

Basically, it's everything the first Paper Fashions is only even better~the artwork, the photographs, the works! The Klutz folk have really upped their game on this, and that's saying a lot, because the first one is fantastic! Extras in this one include ideas on decorating the hangers, making tiny necklaces and most importantly, a tutorial on RUFFLES!

Again, I reiterate that even though these books are aimed at female population, there's no reason any guys who like to design womenswear shouldn't get this too-you should! Some of the best womenswear designers are men!
Agewise, it's suitable for ages 8 and up, and by up, people, don't just get one for your kids or grandkids! If it sounds fun to you, go ahead and get one for yourself! I did, and I'm happy as a lark!

Editorial Review:

Introducing our Spring 2008 collection - Paper Fashions Fancy. This season it's all about glamour. We've designed a brand new set of patterned and colored papers, including some with glitter, foil, and velvety black flocking. There's a new selection of seed beads, sequins, ribbon, and more than a hundred sticky-back "jewels" for embellishing the fashions. And, of course, the tiny wire hangers are back - this time we include clever ideas for decorating those hangers to make them gown-worthy.

Christopher Chase's Favorite Book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is outstanding! It is the best book I have ever read. I like it because it is gross and very funny! I give it five stars.

Not that great 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

After two or three of these books, the plot becomes dull and loses its humor. Also, I would not recommend these for children learning to read and write as they are filled with misspellings (picher for picture and shurely for surely). I don't quite get why this is supposed to be funny, but it's confusing and ultimately detrimental for my 8 year old.

Finally, parents take note: Pilkey has created a lucrative business based on potty humor and his inability to draw above a 3rd grade level. This is the junk food of the children's book industry. Many young children will find these books funny, but just as we don't allow our kids to eat candy and chips all day, these books should be limited.

Editorial Review:

Tra-La-Laaaaa! Join George and Harold on FIVE hilarious adventures with the amazing Captain Underpants, as they duel Dr. Diaper, tackle the talking toilets, clash with the crazy cafeteria ladies, plot against Professor Poopypants, and wrestle the wicked Wedgie Woman. Overflowing with humor, action, and that world-famous cheesy animation technique, Flip-O-Rama, this boxed collection will make kids laugh until soda comes out their noses. Have you read your UNDERPANTS today?

A book that children (and adults) can easily get lost in! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

"Spying is one of the oldest professions in the world: evidence dates back millennia (which is truly unfortunate for a secret activity should leave no trace)."

The art of spying and secret identities is one of those typical and wonderfully creative childhood fantasies. With SPYOLOGY, young people now have a fun and fascinating introduction and guide to the fantasy. This large book is chock-a-block full of information, games and stories to inspire and challenge. Like all the volumes in the 'Ologies series, readers will come across fantastic illustrations and flaps and pockets galore in these pages. The red jewel on the cover is even a "magnifying filter decoder" that can be used to find hidden messages and pictures in the book.

SPYOLOGY, the publisher tells us, is actually a declassified document. It was the book of a spy named "Spencer Blake" on a top-secret mission that no nation will claim. The first thing spies-in-training will find is the mission he received, still in the envelope marked "top secret."

Mixed in with Blake's notes is information on a variety of spycraft topics such as secret intelligence organizations, disguises, surveillance, codes, information gathering, gadgets, the history of spying and much more. There are several short case studies, spy glasses for disguise tucked neatly in a pocket, paper clues and pieces of ephemera. There are also codes to crack and secret messages, notes and letters to and from Spencer Blake, bills of counterfeit money and a wheel to decipher codex codes.

SPYOLOGY can be read as an adventure story, as a manual for learning the craft of espionage, or leafed through item by item as it catches the reader's eye. It is a book that children (and adults) can easily get lost in!

Editorial Review:

A spy reveals startling secrets and carries out a breathless mission — in an astonishing guide that takes the 'Ologies to a new level.

The year is 1958, and British spy Spencer Blake, aka "Agent K," is on an undercover mission to expose a deadly criminal organization. As he traverses the globe with his American and Soviet cohorts — from Scotland to Berlin to Las Vegas to Cuba — he furtively records his secret techniques in a manual for new recruits.

Once they've primed themselves on the essentials of spy craft, keen-eyed readers will discover that Agent K has been setting them challenges and clues to decipher all along. If they are clever enough to unravel them all, a great reward awaits!

Overall Great Book for Children 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Great book that is a good overview of the movie for children. They include a few weird words, such as 'holodetector' and may be difficult for young children to read as well as hard to describe what the word is (the best thing to say is 'computer').

Wall-e Book 5 out of 5 stars.

Great Wall-e book. Good synopsis of the story for young readers. In fact I read it to the party-goers as several of them had not seen the movie. It gave them a very good idea of what the movie was about and who Wall-e was.

What can happen when you start your own business? 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The narrator inherits an old lawn mower and starts a lawn mowing business. Before he knows it, he's got more business than he can handle and a hippie stockbroker making investments for him. Each chapter title has something to do with an economic principle and we are taken along on the ride as the young narrator learns more than he ever wanted to learn about capitalism.

Very quick read. Cute.

Editorial Review:

One day I was 12 years old and broke. Then Grandma gave me Grandpa's old riding lawnmower. I set out to mow some lawns. More people wanted me to mow their lawns. And more and more. . . . One client was Arnold the stockbroker, who offered to teach me about "the beauty of capitalism. Supply and Demand. Diversify labor. Distribute the wealth." "Wealth?" I said. "It's groovy, man," said Arnold.

If I'd known what was coming, I might have climbed on my mower and putted all the way home to hide in my room. But the lawn business grew and grew. So did my profits, which Arnold invested in many things. And one of them was Joey Pow the prizefighter. That's when my 12th summer got really interesting.

Will thrill Warriors fans with its trademark thrilling adventures and warm emotions 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Jaypaw remembers experiencing the presence of ancient cat warriors near him at Moonpool and attempts to speak with them again. The young warrior apprentice suspects that the ancient warriors could enlighten him, explaining the prophecy he heard in Firestar's dream: "There will be three, kin of your kin, who will hold the power of the stars in the paw." But, alas, the ancient warriors do not respond to Jaypaw's entreaties.

Now, though, Jaypaw must find herbs for his medicine cat mentor, Leafpool. He complies, but it's obvious that his mind is not on his job, and he inadvertently frightens away a thrush being stalked by warrior apprentices. Meanwhile, his brother, Lionpaw, wishes that it was time for his assessment as a warrior; he's tired of being just a warrior apprentice. On the other hand, Jaypaw knows he will not be a true medicine cat until Leafpool dies --- and he would never wish for that.

Hollypaw is distracted by thoughts that someday the Clan may expect her to find a mate and have kits. She knows she's not ready for those kinds of responsibilities, especially since she mostly wants to put her energy toward being an excellent warrior. In fact, her true secret ambition is to be Clan leader, and she definitely can't imagine combining that position with motherhood. As she ponders her future, Hollypaw is fascinated with the tales that Brook tells of growing up in the Tribe of Rushing Water. Hollypaw wishes she could visit Brook's tribe, but is sure she will never travel to the far distant mountains in which they make their home.

When Jaypaw at last is able to communicate with Rock, one of the ancient cats, he doesn't get the clear-cut answers about his destiny that he seeks. However, he learns from others that the Tribe of Rushing Water is in peril --- and he knows that somehow this will affect his future. Lionpaw is also hearing tales of the Tribe of Rushing Water mountain home, from Stormfur. He longs to explore the area, knowing that he's seen only a very small part of what the world has to offer.

When strange cats approach ThunderClan, Brook knows them. They are Tribe of Rushing Water warriors Talon and Night. The two strangers request Stormfur and Brook's return to the mountains, to help save the Tribe. When ThunderClan rallies to help, Lionpaw, Jaypaw and Hollypaw are determined to go as well. When Firestar finally agrees, they are thrilled. But they have no way to guess the perils and the rewards they'll encounter on their quest.

OUTCAST will thrill Warriors fans with its trademark thrilling adventures and warm emotions as Lionpaw, Jaypaw and Hollypaw continue to grow and change through tough challenges and interactions with others. Readers will count the days until the next epic and entertaining Power of Three installment is available.

There will be three,
Kin of you kin....
Who hold the
Power of the stars
In their paws.

A secret prophecy shapes the lives of Firestar's grandchildren, but only one of the three knows about it. Jaypaw is captivated by the power it promises, and he believes the key to that power may lie buried in the distant past -- with the ancient cats who once walked these woods and now prowl through his dreams. His search for answers leads him toward the mountains -- the home of the Tribe of Rushing Water. Lionpaw and Hollypaw feel drawn to the mountains too, for different reasons.

But the mountains hide secrets as well as answers, and if the three cats find a way to get there, they may discover more than they ever expected.

An Exciting Survival Story 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Hatchet is one of Gary Paulsen's finest works. I think his goal was to establish a great young adult novel that is easy to become immersed in. He looks to create a book that is enjoyable and also has a lot of useful information about life in the wilderness.
Paulsen, a writer from Minneapolis, writes young adult novels usually about nature. He has written over 200 books, short stories, magazine articles, and plays. He enjoys dog sled racing and has participated in many Iditarod races.
Brian Robeson is trapped in the Canadian wilderness with nothing more than the clothes on his back and a hatchet, given to him by his divorced mother before his trip. He crashes from a bush plane after the pilot has a heart attack and the plane runs out of fuel. He is forced to eat whatever he can find, which includes fish, turtle eggs, wild berries, and a few birds. Isolated from any outside help, Brian must find out on his own by making fire by hitting flint with more flint and other survival tactics. Many dangers seem to get in Brian's way as he tries to get by until he can be rescued. Among these dangers, Brian must face a porcupine, a moose, and even a tornado. Will he survive the elements and get rescued or will the wilderness be too much for him to handle?
I feel that Gary Paulsen has achieved his goal with flying colors. You could read this book over and over again and still find inspiration from it. Hatchet sparked the mind with exciting conflicts and kept me entertained from cover to cover. I felt that Hatchet has a certain special touch that no other writer could compare. If you are ever stuck in the wilderness, do not look for a survival guide, look for Hatchet. It will teach you more about the wild than most guides out there.

Editorial Review:

ALONE

Thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson is on his way to visit his father when the single-engine plane in which he is flying crashes. Suddenly, Brian finds himself alone in the Canadian wilderness with nothing but a tattered Windbreaker and the hatchet his mother gave him as a present -- and the dreadful secret that has been tearing him apart since his parent's divorce. But now Brian has no time for anger, self pity, or despair -- it will take all his know-how and determination, and more courage than he knew he possessed, to survive.

For twenty years Gary Paulsen's award-winning contemporary classic has been the survival story with which all others are compared. This new edition, with a reading group guide, will introduce a new generation of readers to this page-turning, heart-stopping adventure.
