Two years later, this still brings tears to my eyes... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book was a gift from my mother in law to my daughter shortly after she was born. The first time I read it to her, it moved me so much that I could hardly finish. The story is simple, beautiful and still brings to me tears every time that I read it to my daughter. It is rare to find in someone else's words the complete expression of how much I love her and how happy I am that she was born into our family. The story tells how special the baby was to the world and how the earth celebrated her birth.

The artwork is stunning, the words lyrical, and I can't think of a book that I enjoyed receiving more since my daughter was born. She's not old enough to enjoy it as much as she will later & we have to be careful of the paper pages so they don't rip as she helps me turn them. Regardless of that, it's a wonderful thing to read & express to your baby how special she is to you.

Editorial Review:

On the night you were born,
the moon smiled with such wonder
that the stars peeked in to see you
and the night wind whispered.
“Life will never be the same.”

On the night you were born, the whole world came alive with thanksgiving. The moon stayed up till morning. The geese flew home to celebrate. Polar bears danced.

On the night you were born you brought wonder and magic to the world. Here is a book that celebrates you. It is meant to be carried wherever life takes you, over all the roads, through all the years.

This debut picture book by Nancy Tillman has touched the hearts of readers of all ages, from the youngest readers, to new mothers, to grandparents. A New York Times and Publishers Weekly bestselling book, On the Night You Were Born is sure to be a beloved addition to family libraries.

Hypocritical 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Seuss, turned holier-than-thou by his elevated status in society, decides to preach to us about the evils of industrialization. Does he realize that the many millions of copies of "The Lorax" were all made in factories, using paper that came from trees?

Imagine 5 out of 5 stars.

Is it a coincidence that Thneed rhymes with Deadly Sin #3? Growth for the sake of growth is where we are today. This too shall pass, UNLESS....

Review by Sherry North, Author, Because You Are My Baby

While most Dr. Suess stories are pure fun without any heavy message, The Lorax delivers an extremely blunt lesson on ecology. What's amazing is that Dr. Suess does this with a narrative that is engaging, entertaining and ultimately inspiring. You might think a book with such a heavy message could be a turn-off to young children, but I have found the opposite. My preschoolers find this story absorbing. I think they understand there is something truly important at stake, so the book means more to them than other Dr. Suess titles.

Editorial Review:

"UNLESS someone like you...cares a whole awful lot...nothing is going to get better...It's not."

Long before saving the earth became a global concern, Dr. Seuss, speaking through his character the Lorax, warned against mindless progress and the danger it posed to the earth's natural beauty.

"The big, colorful pictures and the fun images, word plays and rhymes make this an amusing exposition of the ecology crisis."—School Library Journal. Illus. in full color.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING 5 out of 5 stars.

Doomwyte is one of the best Redwall novels yet! It's a novel that anybody could love! It was filled with puzzles and action!

Usual fare from Brian Jacques 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Brian Jacques has produced another lovely tale of Redwall. Despite the fact that he follows the usual formula, it was still a good adventure and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

Editorial Review:

On a moonless night, two rats follow hypnotic lights into the forest, never to be seen again. Such is the power of the Doomwytes, sinister ravens led by the deadly Korvus Skurr. And when the young mouse Bisky persuades the creatures of Redwall Abbey to go in search of a fabled treasure, hidden long ago by one of the abbey’s most notorious thieves, they do not suspect Skurr and his ravens will be vying for that very treasure.

Bisky and his fellow Redwallers must summon all their courage to face the evil horde of slithering snakes and vicious ravens. From underground tunnels to the tops of trees, the fearless Redwallers, with the help of their woodland friends, battle some of their most vicious enemies yet in an exhilarating, terrifying treasure hunt.

Kids' Version of Marley and Me 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

While my 11 year old daughter would have been able to read the original book Marley and Me: Life and Love With the World's Worst Dog, some parts were not age appropriate for her. Luckily this version was written for kids to read on their own and retains all the humor of the original. It is a fun read for any kid who loves dogs and loves to laugh! This book is guaranteed to leave you laughing out loud, and reading passages to everyone nearby.

Editorial Review:

With an appetite for nearly anything he can get his mouth around, including couches and fine jewelry, Marley is always getting into trouble. But to his family, he is a dog like no other. In this adaptation of his #1 New York Times bestselling Marley & Me, John Grogan brings the Labrador retriever's heartwarming antics to life—and shows how one big, rambunctious dog can teach a family what really matters in life.

STOLEN STORY !! 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I came across a book called "Dog Breath" by Dav Pilkey. It's the SAME EXACT story as "Walter" but the dog has bad breath. This dog also fends off burglars and is saved from being given away. I was horrified. This book was published in 1994. Walter in 2001. Way to steal someone else's story for your own profit!!!

Walter the Farting Dog -- A Dog Trainer's Perspective 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I don't know how William Kotzwinkle and Glenn Murray learned of my dog George. Somehow, though, they must have heard the tale - like the fart heard round the world - and seen in his story the drama, the suspense to capture an audience and make their New York Times Bestseller dreams come true. They changed his name, of course, called him Walter the Farting Dog; but then that is common practice, "to protect the innocent" - I assume that means me. And they changed some of the facts of the case - again, common; a true story fictionalized to make it more difficult for casual acquaintances to put two-and-two together and identify my family as the agonists (not exactly ant- but certainly not pro-). But it's our story; really. And as Kotzwinkle and Murray benefit from its telling, here I sit, gas-mask mussing my hair, living the odorous reality of it all. It seems so unfair. Perhaps I should sue.

Chiefly I object to being portrayed as the kind of woman who would consider returning George because of his noxious smell. After all, my husband farts. In fact, he farts in bed. And not only does he fart in bed, he then proceeds to fluff the sheets to share his farts with me. It is egregious. It is gratuitous. It is, as he puts it, "The last bastion of manhood in a gelded world." (All right: I'm paraphrasing. The way he said it was ever-so-slightly more salty.) And I have never once (well, maybe once) threatened to send him back to his mother in England - so why would I return George?

Though, George does fart. Like Walter, he farts when he bathes and while playing. He farts as he walks around the house - in the dining room and kitchen. And he farts in bed. And while my husband, fair-minded man that he is, laughs and helps George to fluff the sheets (George having that no-opposable-thumb issue), I admit I am not so forgiving. "Outside," I'll say, and then, "Bedtime," as I hold the kennel door open and my nose closed and usher George into his own little bed for the rest of the night. Sometimes, then, I'll lie in the darkened room down the hall and wonder if the kennel has yet swollen to ten-times its normal size as George's hot-air inflates it like a balloon. The next morning it is always in its place, though. Flights of farts and fancy aside, George remains at home where he belongs. I open the kennel door, and with a fart and a stretch, George begins his day. I accept this. I would not give George up.

Aside from this one small error, however, Kotzwinkle and Murray got the story straight. We have consulted our veterinarian (who apparently is in the authors' employ), and we have tried various foods (though not lettuce and tomato sandwiches - everyone knows that George doesn't care for green food). Poor George does indeed get the blame for any and all suspicious smells, including those emanating from backsides decidedly less doggish (you know who you are, "Uncle Irv"). And while he has never in fact scared away nighttime marauders, guests who have over-stayed their welcome have occasionally been handed rather smelly, though figurative, hats as George has shown them the door. So you see: our story; not Kotzwinkle's and Murray's.

Yet, I suppose the story is theirs now, in a way; and because they have told it, it's become your story, too. For Kotzwinkle and Murray, from their objective (and odor-free) distance, have distilled our malodorous little family saga to its universal essence; have made it a story of compassion, a story of acceptance, and, ultimately, a story of redemption. And so, you see, I cannot bring myself to pursue legal recourse. In a way, I'm proud that our smelly laundry has been so publicly aired. If it can but help one family, one other Walter, or George (or 30-something English computer programmer) retain his happy home, it will have been worth the sacrifice. No other compensation is necessary. (But honestly, Kotzwinkle and Murray: now that you've sold a million copies, couldn't you at least spring for one bottle of Febreeze?)

Editorial Review:

Warning: This book may cause flatulence. This is the Spanish edition of the beloved New York Times Bestseller. Walter is a fine dog, except for one small problem: he has gas. He can't help it; it's just the way he is. Fortunately, the kids Billy and Betty love him regardless, but Father says he's got to go! Poor Walter, he's going to the dog pound tomorrow. And then, in the night, burglars strike. Walter has his chance to be a hero. Destined to become a children's classic, this story will have kids rolling on the floor with laughter. Adults are permitted to laugh too.

An Ozark Requiem - Where the Red Fern Grows 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Being an avid reader my whole life, I don't know how I skipped over this book as a kid. Recently I decided to brush up on some classic literature, and I grabbed this off my bookshelf...wow. This has to be one of the most AMAZING American tales of all time...and it's definitely in my top five books ever.

Warning: it has a little flavor of Bridge to Terebithia in it because of it's terribly bittersweet ending...but it is well worth it.

The writing style is so easy to read and so engrossing, it's like the author is actually sitting across from you telling you the story.

This is a slice of Americana that all kids should read...it captures the Ozarks and the heart of a little boy who loves his dogs so well! The fact that the main character had to work so hard for what he wanted is such a wonderful message to kids today.

Where the Red Fern Grows is a little piece of the American dream, and it is a must read for everyone. No questions asked.

Editorial Review:

Billy, Old Dan and Little Ann -- a Boy and His Two Dogs...

A loving threesome, they ranged the dark hills and river bottoms of Cherokee country. Old Dan had the brawn, Little Ann had the brains -- and Billy had the will to train them to be the finest hunting team in the valley. Glory and victory were coming to them, but sadness waited too. And close by was the strange and wonderful power that's only found...

An exciting tale of love and adventure you'll never forget.

THE TALE OF A VERY PUSHY MOUSE! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is the first offering of a wonderfully delightful series of like stories for children. If You Give a Mouse A Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff and illustrated by Felicia Bond tell the story, and the problems you might run into, if you should happen to give a overly active and demanding mouse a cookie. The story begins with a young boy innocently setting by his sidewalk in front of his house. A hungry mouse comes along and the problems begin.

This is a progressive type of tale, where one act of generosity keeps growing and growing. "If you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of milk. When you give him milk, he'll probably ask you for a straw. When you give him a straw, he will ask........." And it goes on and on and on until the poor kid pretty well has a completely trashed house and is exhausted trying to fulfill the escalating requests and the subsequent mess the requests ultimately cause. A pushy mouse and cookies, we find, are not a good combination!

The text is delightfully simple and keeps you turning the pages, page after page. You actually find you self wanting to see what the little rodent is going to ask for next. The story is simple and there is no bang, bang, crash crunch plot nor ending. The only problem I find in this aspect is that in this day and age, I find some children (and even more adults), who have the attention span of ferrets on coffee and if the story is in the least bit mellow, their minds simply cannot track. This is a minor problem though, if it is indeed a problem.

The art work by Felicia Bond is quite well done and goes perfectly with the text. The pictures are simple to understand, cute and quite eye catching. I liked them.

This is one of in a series of books by this team. Others include If you give a Moose a Muffin, If you give a Pig a Pancake, If you take a Mouse to the Movies, If you take a Mouse to School and If you give a Pig a Party. All are as well done. I have noted in reading this book and others in the series that the kids love them and will always ask for repeat readings.

Short and Sweet 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Sheep in a Jeep tells the a rip-roaring story of a bunch of sheep who get into a lot of trouble with a jeep. These rhymes and more abound in Sheep in a Jeep.

The cute sing-song words to this book make it perfect for toddlers. It's short and sweet, so it can keep their attention. There are plenty of animals to capture the interests of little ones. And finally...it's short..did I mention that?

This is one of my little girl's favorite book and I don't mind reading it over and over again.

Great rhyme book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great rhyming book with sight words. A wonderfully illustrated board book that is great for kids...especially those with parents who own Jeeps.

Toddler's delight 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

What makes Sheep in a Jeep such a delight to read is its unabashed use of onomatopoeia. Indeed, some of my daughter's first words were "splash" and "thud" as she recited along this favorite story.

With every page Shaw's vivid vocabulary comes alive in perfectly-metered rhyme, adeptly complimented by Apple's whimsical illustrations. In a format just long enough to delight, and short enough to entertain, it's little wonder Sheep in a Jeep has been such a longstanding favorite.

I can't recommend it highly enough for your own little ones, and it makes a great baby shower gift inclusion!

scratch & sniffs defective :-( 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My child loves this book ( she assumes it is the Little Bear from the TV series she loves too) and after enjoying it at someone else's house, I bought it only to find only one of the scratch & sniff stickers that works (the pine tree). One was entirely missing (chocolate) , and the rest have absolutely no smell and are shiny like they never had the microencapsulated smell particles applied. Such a disappointment, since the story is all about smelling the smells! Seems like others have had this problem too.
I decided to buy smell stickers myself from a website and put them in the book. More expensive, but at least it will work for sure. We will have to get by with cinnamon smell for the gingerbread boy as I couldn't find gingerbread stickers.
I also wrote to Random House, but am not really expecting them to have replacement stickers.

Editorial Review:

Christmas is almost here! Little Bear can smell it—and so can you! The air is filled with the aroma of gingerbread cookies, minty candy canes, the piney Christmas tree, and yummy hot apple pie. Celebrate the holiday season with this classic Golden storybook which includes six scratch-and-sniff scents.
