The mom in this story is one smart cookie, herself, teaching independence 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I love this book because the mom is smart. She knows that if she explains everything to her little alligator, he won't really learn. So she allows him to go through a tough time while he figures out for himself the right thing to do. In the end she helps him prove to himself that he is as smart as she knows he is.

Preschool Class Learns PLEASE 5 out of 5 stars.

8 Children Under 5 all give this book two hands up! We love the sweet illustrations and the antics of this cookie lover. Learning to say please isn't as easy for some animals as it is for us kids.

Definite Hit! 5 out of 5 stars.

We all love this book (parents and kids alike)! It's cute, thoughtful, and inspires good manners. My 4-year-old has on several occasions acted out the entire story (right down to being a "kooky inspektor" and making his own cookies out of paper), and my 5-year-old quotes the whole thing. This is definitely one of those books that I've recommended to all of my friends for their children.

Editorial Review:

Alfie loves his mommy's cookies, and he wants one more than anything! But grabbing for one, fishing for one, and dressing up as a cookie inspector don't seem to work. His mommy says there is a better way. What is it? Beginning readers will learn proper manners with Alfie as his mommy teaches him to say the magic words.

My 3 year old son and 5 year old daughter love this book! It is a must read every night before bed. The illustration is wonderful and the story absolutely adorable!!!!

Getting into Bed Can Be Hazardous (when you're little) 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Like so many of us when we were children, our young hero in _There's an Alligator Under My Bed_ has trouble getting into bed safely due to the dangers that lurk under his bed. Since his parents never see the creature, he decides he must deal with it himself.

With one or two sentences per page, this is a great book to read to your toddlers and preschoolers to start a discussion about bedtime fears.

Why didn't his parents ever see the alligator? Can alligators really live under beds?

Taming 2's and 3's 5 out of 5 stars.

Storytime, as you can imaging, in a preschool can be a bit challenging to say the least. If we are have a crazy day, I just pull out "There's An Alligatior Under My Bed" and the classroom goes silent as a room full of preschoolers sit and listen quietly mesmerized by this story. What more can I say. I love this book!

The There's a Nightmare In My Closet, bringing back that story's imaginative young hero for an even funnier nighttime adventure. Full-color illustrations.

great book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I just purchased this title for my 4 year old daughter, and she (and I) really love it!!! The title of the book doesn't really grab you but it's a sweet story about how the neighbor Mr Grumps really doesn't like Lyle, has him banished to the zoo, and then Lyle ends up saving Mr Grumps. I really like the characters in this series because they remind me of real life people that your kids will have to deal with at some point or another. My daughter was totally engaged.

A Book to Remember 5 out of 5 stars.

I am now 21 years old and I can still remember the opening line to this tape. The Lyle books are wonderful for children and this tape is a great way to put your child to sleep. The Lyle books are truly one of my greatest childhood memories!

Why do people love this book?? 1 out of 5 stars.

I don't get it. My three-and-a-half-year-old son doesn't like it. It lacks the sweetness and focus of "Corduroy" or "The Snowy Day." It changes scene too often (and not in a good way, like Harold and the Purple Crayon). And the characters are unkind to each other until the very end. I bought this book based on good reviews, but without having read it myself. My mistake. I think this is not a great book for little kids to read, and I won't read it again with my son. Very disappointing.

Great books with cd's 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My husband and I absolutely love this series. It was made with adults in mind. It's not too kidish. We have the Miles the Crocodile, Charlie Bird, Ella Elephant, & Duck Ellington so far. We also have the Baby Loves Jazz CD (go baby go). It's great too. My 1 year old loves them all. We've been listening to them since he was about 8 months old. He listens to them every morning and night before bedtime. He's even started dancing to them. Now that he's a little older. He brings me the books and we read the little stories. I also dubbed these for my nieces who are 3 & 6. They really like them too. You can't go wrong with these books that come with the cd's. They are an excellent teaching tool as well as entertainment

A hit! 5 out of 5 stars.

This series is wonderful! Our two-year-old absolutely loves the Baby Loves Jazz series. We bought a few to start out, then ended up buying the whole set. Two months after acquiring them, she is still enamored and requests to listen to them and read them every day. Her favorites? Well, these are the words we hear most often: "Mommy, read Duck and Miles?" or "Daddy, listen to Duck and Miles?" Philly Joe is also high on the list. I recommend them all. The books stand out on their own, but the music is what makes this series really shine. For example, on Duck Ellington's CD, he does a great Monk style on one track, then switches to great impression of Coltrane's classic quartet on the next track, with a very nice McCoy Tyner impression. Lots of variety and high quality make this series worthwhile (though I could have done without Louis Lion's potty tune). Don't forget the Go Baby Go CD as well (a stand-alone CD without a book), which is perhaps a notch above the music on the book CDs. The ABC tune is her favorite on that one.

Learn colors as you listen to jazz with Miles the Crocodile:

When jazz is white, it’s like snow in flight,

Editorial Review:

With his "secret plans and clever tricks," the Enormous Crocodile desires to lunch not with but on a nice, juicy child. His croc companion, the Notsobig One, is the first to try to talk him out of his scheme, claiming children are no good to eat. "'Tough and chewy!' cried the Enormous Crocodile. 'Nasty and bitter! What awful tommyrot you talk! They are juicy and yummy!'" One jungle critter after another--from Trunky the elephant to Muggle-Wump the monkey to the Roly-Poly Bird--tries to prevent the Enormous Crocodile from carrying out his dastardly deed, but on he waddles toward the village. Unfortunately for him, the animals have a few secret plans and clever tricks up their furry sleeves, too!

This new storybook format of a fabulous Roald Dahl and Quentin Blake classic is destined to delight a whole new generation of young readers. The first collaborative effort of this picture-perfect creative match, The Enormous Crocodile's uniquely Dahl-esque dialogue and laugh-out-loud illustrations marked the beginning of a beautiful partnership. Some of their other creations include The Magic Finger and The BFG. Dahl is a master at giving readers a delectably sweet taste of vengeance. (Ages 6 to 10) --Emilie Coulter

Sooooooooo cute! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

A cute, hilarious, innocent book about a little crocodile named Achilles who decides he wants to hunt down little children, even though his parents keep telling him to eat bananas for breakfast if he wants to grown big and strong. Achilles is a very loveable character, and the punchline to the story is lots of fun. If you enjoyed this one, you might also want to check out Mo Willems' "Leonardo The Terrible Monster," which has a similar plot and an equally adorable hero. (ReadThatAgain!)

Editorial Review:

Oh, growing up is so hard! There's so much you want and so much you can't do yet. Little Achilles is a crocodile who decides one morning that he's grown beyond his diet of bananas. "Today, I’d really like to eat a child," he tells his mother. She reasons with him: "What an idea!...Well, children don't grow on banana trees, only bananas do, and that's what I have for breakfast!" But Achilles won't be swayed, not even by sausage or cake. And when he happens upon a girl child by the river, it looks like his culinary dream might come true...

French author-illustrator team Sylviane Donnio and Dorothee de Monfreid have perfectly captured the hubris of childhood in this droll story. Young Achilles is so darn cute, and so sure of himself, readers will fall instantly in love. And the encounter with the girl at the river bank is priceless. --Emilie Coulter

A charming children's classic 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I first read Bernard Waber's The House on East 88th Street as a child and was capitivated by Lyle the Crocodile. How I loved this story about a bright green crocodile living in a bathtub in a New York City brownstone.Though frightened at first, the Primm family is won over by their housemate. Lyle is amazing, he takes out the trash, brings in the milk, (this book was first published in 1962!)helps around the house, and loves a nice, hot bath complete with Turkish caviar! (We could all use a Lyle) The story of Lyle does not end here; Waber went on to write seven more titles about this lovable creature. Out of all the Lyle books, this is his best-known. This charming children's classic is suitable for small children between the ages of four and eight.

The magical world of Lyle 5 out of 5 stars.

The story of Lyle the crocodile who is discovered in the bathtub when Joshua and his family move into their new home. My mother first read this book to me when I was four years old. I am now 35! It is a truly wonderful childrens book. One of those that lingers in your memory as a world you inhabited as a child. Myself and my sisters adored the Lyle books and we are now buying them for our families. Endearing, amusing, full of the joys and sadnesses of life. Lyle is a childs world through a crocodiles eyes. Try them all. You and your children (of all ages) will love them!.

Editorial Review:

The first book in the Lyle series, this tells the story of how the Primms found Lyle the crocodile in the bathtub of their new home.

Class is in session! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As usual with the books of James Marshall, the combinations of the words and the silly pictures make this a very funny book. Fox lose his big part in the class play, is afraid to go down a slide for a fire drill, and is left in charge of the class by Miss Moon.

Editorial Review:

Starring in the school play means hard work, and being left in charge means keeping the class under control. Fox thinks there's nothing to it. And, when he's put to the test, will Fox retreat? Never! A Puffin Easy-to-Read Book, Level 3.

Classic James Marshall 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

If you have a child between 3 and 8, you should buy this book. The late, great James Marshall (Edward was a pseudonym) had the rare ability to tell a story using easy-to-read words, but still with genuinely surprising and humorous twists. This book's ending is a brilliant twist, which I will not spoil here.

If you don't have a child the right age, you should buy this anyway, but you may have to think of an excuse.

This book ranks with Marshall's best, which also include the sublime "Three By the Sea," as well as the better-known "Miss Nelson" and "George & Martha" books.

A note to the publisher: You really should keep James Marshall's better books available in hardcover library editions. This guy's best works are classics, and they'll continue to sell for at least another century.

Editorial Review:

In three separate episodes Fox wants to play with his friends, but duty in one form or another interferes.
