This research guide was purchased for my classroom. In the first week I had it available, six students were on the waiting list to check it out. Once again Mr. and Mrs. Osborne have provided a teacher/student friendly support book for a Magic Tree House book.

IMPORTANT POLARbook TO HAVE! 5 out of 5 stars.

My mama is a man! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I just found out my mama is a man! By now he seems just like my mama and he did save my life. Here is the story.

In December 2006, my brother and I were born in Zoo Berlin. I don't remember this--my mama the man told me about it. I am so close with Thomas my mama that I understand much of what he says. Our bear mama did not care for us, so Thomas and the zoo took over when we were five hours old. A few days later my brother died and Thomas became totally devoted to my care. I had the best.

Thomas slept with me, he rubbed me, he fed me, he bathed me, rubbed baby oil into my fur, and he brushed me. See, Thomas really was my mama. When I was thirty-two days old, I finally got a name--Knut. Yes, I like it. Thomas named me. He even stayed with me constantly for the first four months like a real polar mama does in a den. Thomas told me so. He did not go home to his human family until I was four months old. I like them--they came to see us every day!

This book about my growing up time has other information besides what I have already told you. And wonderful photographs that children love. In fact, I was a celebrity here at the zoo for a long time. One man thought they should have left me to die when my polar mama deserted me. Hey, mister, no way! His letter to the editor made people mad. They started writing me 200 letters a week.

Thomas tells me when I am over a year old that I will probably want him to leave me alone--that polar bears like solitude. If he says so. But I am his son and I will listen. Listen, what I want you to take from this little talk is to take care of your planet. Global warming is reducing our living area. Some scientists think that polar bears may not be able to exist in the polar regions in your lifetime! I'm safe here in the zoo, but I do wonder what all that cold and ice and snow would be like. Maybe...Thomas says I would eat several seals a day in my natural habitat. Seals?

Knut
Zoo Berlin

Editorial Review:

When Knut was born, the first polar bear cub at the Berlin Zoo in more than thirty years, he was no bigger than a snowball and unable to care for himself. His mother, a rescued East German circus bear, didn't know how to take care of Knut and rejected him. Knut would have died if it weren't for Thomas Dorflein, a zookeeper who nurtured Knut, feeding him, sleeping with him, and giving him the love and attention Knut needed to thrive. But Thomas wasn't the only one who adopted Knut. The adorable little polar bear captured the world's attention, and now Knut is loved around the globe.

I purchased this book because I teach Spanish to children ages 3-6. It's a perfect book for learning animals and colors. The illustrations are simple and easy to understand. There aren't too many words and the repetitiveness aids learning. Kids are familiar with this book and love it. I recommend it if you teach little ones Spanish or if you speak Spanish to your young children.

Editorial Review:

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? is a classic of children's literature. Bill Martin's rhythmic text speaks directly to young children, and Eric Carle's gorgeous illustrations hold children enraptured reading after reading.

With this Spanish translation, Spanish-speaking and bilingual children will now be able to share the magic of the beloved Brown Bear and his friends.

love this book so much 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This was my sons first book he was ever interested in. At 7 months he was turning the pages himself and checking out every picture. Now he knows what's coming before he's even opened the page and if you read a line aloud he looks for the book. Needless to say we are big fans. Hopefully this book has started a love of reading that my son will carry with him for the reast of his life.

An HONEST 4 stars 4 out of 5 stars.

We bought this for our 8 month old infant. This was her first book. We now have over a dozen books and at 10 months, B is for Bear is by far her favorite, which is understandable at her level. I chose this book because I wanted a good sized board book with one image per page. At this young age, I didn't want to bombard her with multiple images at once. At this learning stage, the simpler, the better. I give this book four stars because a couple of the capitalized letters that proceed each phrase are hard to read, for example, F is for flower is "creatively" put on the side and makes it difficult for the young reader to make out the letter unless the parent turns the book at an angle. "K is for kitten" looks like an H. The text of these capitalized letters are supposed to look handwritten but too much so. Also, "I is for ink that makes my hands blue" was not a good item/ idea for that letter. The child in the picture holds up her blue hands and I hope my child does not associate the word ink with what are hands. An older child would understand but when they're learning letters and words now, this picture could create confusion. It is a beautiful book however, and for a child's first book, this would be my first choice because of its simplicity, nice large pictures, and the touch and feel features.

Editorial Review:

The ferocious, snarling beast closing in on you fast has a toothache. In the white wastelands of the Arctic, there is nowhere to hide. Where is that helicopter?

Despite surviving this nightmare, award-winning photographer Norbert Rosing loves the charming, playful side of the polar bear. Yes, they slashed his tires, but mankind is now ruining their climate and environment. Surely the bears' anger is understandable. Rosing's book connects children with the consequences of global warming, and gives practical advice on how to help save our white-furred friends.

Editorial Review:

On a freezing day in the arctic, two polar bear cubs venture outside with their mother. She teaches them how to use their claws so they don’t slip in their frozen world. Then she leads them across the sea ice, the only place to hunt for seals, their primary food. The bears need lots of fat to survive through the summer when the ice is gone and food is scarce.

Best-selling author Brenda Guiberson gives young readers a fascinating glimpse into the world of the polar bear. Breathtaking illustrations by Ilya Spirin bring the rich details of the arctic to life.

At about age four, children become fascinated with animals and want to learn more. From puppies to butterflies to elephants, this series animates the life cycles of children's favorite animals.

The Watch Me Grow series looks closely at the circle of life. It provides a solid foundation for immediate exploration of the natural world, and for future study of life sciences. With engaging, first-person text each spread draws children in to the individual world of one of the animals they know from the zoo. Each book in the series gives a clear view of one creature's life cycle.

"The charismatic appearance of the giant panda has made it one of the most popular animals in the world. It is also one of the most endangered, with estimates suggesting that just 1,000 are left in their natural habitat. Heather Angel has probably taken more photographs of pandas than any other living photographer. In this charming collection of images, she creates a unique and intimate portrait of these engaging and reclusive creatures. The full color photography is accompanied by engaging and informative, text giving an insight into the way of life and behavior of this iconic animal."

Great for young animal lovers! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

After our trip to Alaska my one and a half year old loves bears. She loves this book! The pictures are great and keep her entertained. However the book has lots of information that makes it appropriate for much older children as well. A book that kids would love for up to ten years- that is something I love! I would like to own several books in the Kids Can Press WIldlife Series.

Editorial Review:

The eating habits of bears is one of 14 topics in this clearly written look at three North American bears -- grizzly bears, polar bears and black bears. In this fascinating book in the popular and informative Kids Can Press Wildlife Series you'll find out how and where bears live, how they give birth and raise their cubs, what they eat and much more. Did you know? * Bears eat so much in the fall that they don't need to eat during the winter. * All baby bears have blue eyes. * Polar bears are related to dogs.
