This was our first Mo Willems book and my great grandchildren loved it!
Funny, well drawn, and contains a great lesson, too. We'll be adding to our Mo Willems library.

Not as interactive as other pigeon stories 4 out of 5 stars.

Our family loves all the pigeon stories. The Puppy version is very cute and kids can relate to the pigeon's plea. However this story has not been as much fun to read as the other pigeon stories because it is less interactive. In Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, kids get to enthusiastically tell the pigeon "no!" on almost every page which is most of the fun. This story does not give kids as much of an opportunity to play disciplinarian--a big and unusual role for a preschooler.

A Pigeon to identify with! 5 out of 5 stars.

The latest in the Mo Willems library of children's picture books has our favorite Pigeon begging for a puppy!

The great and bad thing about Mo Willems' books is that the pigeon exhibits some of our children's worst habits in how he pleads, begs, whines and demands that his needs are met. There was a time I stopped reading my daughter Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!, The and Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late! because I felt that pigeon was helping to contribute to these bad habits. I decided, instead, that these books are great tools to show a child what NOT to do (by emphasizing that when discussing aspects of the book with your child) and to show a child how silly these behaviors look. Aside from that, these books are just plain fun!

Any child can identify with Pigeon's childish behaviors and crazy antics. I also would recommend that if you like the pigeon books, you pick up the Trixie books Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale (Bccb Blue Ribbon Picture Book Awards (Awards)) & Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity. Great, fun books to read.

Editorial Review:

He really, really, REALLY wants one. He'll take really good care of it! What's the matter--don't you want him to be happy?
The latest book in the best-selling Pigeon series is the funniest one yet.

More Trouble For That Pigeon 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The Pigeon has enamored both my three year old daughter and me since we discovered this series earlier in the year. Author Mo Willems is a true genius; he manages to connect with toddlers and preschoolers every time, in every new book. Because the Pigeon sounds and reacts just like they do, the Pigeon series attracts and then keeps a child's attention through many, many readings. These books quickly become permanent favorites.

In DON'T LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS!, the Pigeon wants (you guessed it) to drive a bus. However, the bus driver has already left the scene and warned the young reader that they should not let the Pigeon drive. The Pigeon then weedles, rants, cajoles, and stomps, trying to convince the reader to let him do what he wants. My youngest loves that the Pigeon speaks directly to her, and she loves answering him right back. Believe me, with my daughter in charge, that Pigeon is not going to drive the bus.

DON'T LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS! also teaches the lesson that you can't always have what you want. If my child is asking for something she can't have, I just reminder of this story, and she understands. She doesn't like it, but she understands.

Books that get kids to interact with the story are pure gold and give children a life long love of reading. I personally thank Mo Willems for this series; it has made a lasting impression on my daughter and on me. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Editorial Review:

When a bus driver takes a break from his route, a very unlikely volunteer springs up to take his place-a pigeon! But you've never met one like this before. As he pleads, wheedles, and begs his way through the book, children will love being able to answer back and decide his fate. In his hilarious picture book debut, popular cartoonist Mo Willems perfectly captures a preschooler's temper tantrum.

I bought this book for both my youngest daughter and our cousin, both who were turning one.

Of course this book is way too advanced for them but I brought it to their 1st birthdays and had everyone who was in attendance sign it. I love looking at all the adorable things people have said and can't wait to show it to them as they get older.

Editorial Review:

Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you! Since 1959, Happy Birthday to You!—Dr. Seuss’s joyous ode to individuality—has allowed readers to experience firsthand the thrill of celebrating a birthday as it is done in Katroo. Awakened by the Birthday Bird, you (the reader) are swept out of town on a Smorgasbord’s back to begin a day and night of feasting and feting in such Seussian splendor that it will take 20 days to sweep up the mess! And while Random House can’t possibly compete with the folks in Katroo, we are making available a special Party Edition of the book—featuring its luscious full-color artwork printed on foil—to celebrate its 50th year in print. Consider it icing on the cake!

Editorial Review:

The strange, maniacal blue owl known as the Striga has been rousted from the Great Ga'Hoole Tree. Nyra, leader of the vicious Pure Ones, is either dead or laying low in some distant land, leaving the tree finally at peace. As if fed by an invisible spring, learning and the lively arts flourish at the great tree and spread throughout the owl kingdoms.

But unbeknowst to the Guardians, in a long-empty cave deep in the Northern Kingdoms two ruthless villains join forces to conjure an ancient evil, an evil that will do their bidding and wreak havoc on the world.

When word of this growing malevolence reaches Coryn, Soren, and the Band, the young king knows he must do two things: First, he must return the ember to the Sacred Volcanoes, for the same subtle emanation from the Ember of Hoole that stimulates the quest for knowledge and invention at the great tree, also magnifies the powers of those who seek to destroy it and all for which it stands. Second, he must gather allies. Two armies grow. Gadfeathers, bears, dire wolves, and greenowls join with the Guardians, while on the other side ancient evil takes to the sky.

Editorial Review:

Sesame Street veteran and Emmy Award-winner Mo Willems returns with a fast, funny follow-up to Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!--only this time, the short-tempered pigeon faces his perfect foil in a "special guest star" duckling. In the previous Pigeon book, author and illustrator Willems expertly distilled the escalating emotions of preschoolers all too anxious to get their way. The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog--also a simple and sparsely illustrated story--explores the flip side of that coin, exposing the poker-face persuasive powers of young negotiators. The pigeon just wants to greedily eat the hot dog that he's found: "Oooooh! A hot dog! Yummy! Yummy! Yummy!" Then along comes the duckling, "scooty scoot scoot!" with his insistent questions about hot dogs: "What do they taste like?...Would you say that it tastes like chicken?...Hey, I'm a curious bird." At first, the pigeon entertains the duckling, "Each morsel is a joy! A celebration in a bun!", but then he soon suspects the little bird might have designs on his delicious dog. In the end, of course, the clever duckling gets his way--and half of the hot dog: "You know, you're pretty smart for a duckling." (Ages Baby to Preschool) --Paul Hughes

Lasts and Lasts 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I read to my children every night, religiously. This is one of a very few books that we are happy to pick up and re-read. They enjoyed it when they were 3 and 5, and they still enjoy it when they're now 7 and 9.

As an added bonus for fathers, the theme is about little things we might share with our children that leave a lifelong impression. My dream is that I am creating one or more lasting legacies with my children.

Beautiful story 5 out of 5 stars.

I used this book in my classroom as an example for my students to write thier own story. My 3rd and 4th graders loved the story and it worked great for the lesson I was teaching.

Editorial Review:

Among the greatest charms of children is their ability to view a simple activity as a magical adventure. Such as a walk in the woods late at night. Jane Yolen captures this wonderment in a book whose charm rises from its simplicity. "It was late one winter night, long past my bedtime, when Pa and I went owling." The two walked through the woods with nothing but hope and each other in a journey that will fascinate many a child. John Schoenherr's illustrations help bring richness to the countryside adventure. The book won the 1988 Caldecott Medal.

The Pigeon Strikes Again 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

There is just something about that Pigeon! THE PIGEON HAS FEELINGS, TOO! is another installment in the Pigeon series by Mo Willems. A board book geared toward toddlers, THE PIGEON HAS FEELINGS, TOO! is part of the "A Smidgeon of Pigeon" subset of the Pigeon books which allows very young children to share in the enjoyment of the adventures and antics of Pigeon.

Don't get me wrong, though, this book is still classic Pigeon. In THE PIGEON HAS FEELINGS, TOO! the characteristic line drawings, simple and colorful, introduce toddlers to the concept of feelings, expressed in typical Pigeon fashion. Pigeon stomps when he is angry, mopes when he is sad, and dances when he is happy. The pictures elicit grins and giggles as this short story unfolds. The Pigeon is a unique and distinctive character, and his voice is perfect for young children to relate to. He pouts, he shouts, he gets very stubborn. Even the youngest readers/listeners know he sounds just like they do. He speaks directly to them, too, which just adds to the fun.

THE PIGEON HAS FEELINGS, TOO! is a great addition to any Pigeon collection. Cute, silly, and fun, your kids will have a great time with this book.

Editorial Review:

How does it feel to be a Pigeon? Well, the bus driver is trying to get him to act happy, but as we all know, this is one bird that is not going to be told what to do! Throughout this hilarious board book, Pigeon runs through his signature gamut of emotions while attempting to thwart his old nemesis.

A Penguin State of Mind 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

While there are other characters in the funny pages that I do like, such as Charlie Brown, Ziggy, Marmaduke, the dog from Pooch Cafe, and Mooch and Earl, no one compares to Opus. He is never unkind, he finds beauty in everything, and he is a bird of strong convictions. When I found these same traits in human form, I married him. Opus, a longtime resident of Bloom County, then Outland, and most recently a star of a self-titled comic strip, officially retired on November 2, 2008. There are several compilations of his comic strip, a few other books featuring him, and there is this story: A Wish for Wings That Work. You don't have to love Opus, or even know who he is, to appreciate it. It is all about a bird who wants nothing for Christmas save a pair of wings that will actually enable him to fly. When he is called on in an emergency, he realizes that he can fly, as all penguins can (underwater, of course), and that his gifts are special, just as everyone has gifts unique to her or him that make them special.

I have been reading this story for several years to my students, starting when I taught in an inner city high school in NY. A Wish always evokes some interesting discussions, even though it appears to be a picture book for younger children, they ALL take something away from having read it. And don't think it isn't for you or your children if you are not Christian. Santa and anything religious are secondary to the theme of loving yourself, even if you perceive your flaws (which we all have) to be huge. I have had it confirmed by one Jewish student and several Muslim students that the only concept that resonates is acceptance of self, something that many children can't have reinforced enough. A Wish for Wings That Work is a wonderful story with a great message and beautiful illustrations, a lovely book for any age.

Editorial Review:

Opus the penguin wants nothing more than to be able to fly--one thing that penguins cannot do--until one Christmas Eve, Opus realizes his greatest dream. Reprint. PW.

Two boys' review: It is just a bedtime book, not a social message 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The years haven't been kind to this book. The illustrations are somewhat dated and, judging by the other reviews here on Amazon, there's an angry contingent of parents with abandonment issues who would rather you skip this book for a guide to raise Indigo Children.

I'm just here to review a bedtime book for my two sons.

More than with most books, I really have to act as I read this book to keep their attention. I'm the cow with a nasally Blue Blood voice, I'm the dog with a droopy drawl, and I'm the snort...SNORT!

My boys like this book and we read it regularly at bedtime. Their bookshelf holds roughly 80-100 books and P.D. Eastman occupies two titles in our collection -- A Fish Out of Water and Are You My Mother?

Adoptive Daughter loves it 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

We adopted a little girl from abroad. She is still a toddler and too young to discuss adoption. We got her this book to see how she would react. It has become her favorite that she MUST have read to her every night. We feel it is helping resolve issues she might have with being adopted. She especially likes that she can take control of the little bird herself and move it through the scenes to its mother.

Great book - for any time BUT bedtime! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The pigeon throws all the standard tricks to get you to let him stay up late, you say no a lot, he falls asleep and dreams of having a hot dog party. Everybody's happy!

His arguments range the gamut from almost-sincere to positively silly to, of course, none at all. Great fun, can't find words to express that.

This book will tend to hype a kid up. If you are reading this at bedtime, put another, calmer book after it in the line-up. Something like "Goodnight Moon" or "Goodnight, Mr. Night" or "The Going to Bed Book". However, for daytime storytelling this is definitely great for the more fidgety kids, who get distracted at storytime easily. It *demands* audience participation.

All the excuses kids can think of... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Mo Williems catches all the excuses kids can think of to avoid sleep. My 3 year old daughters typical excuses are 'I need a glass of water', 'I'm not sleepy at ALL' rubbing her eyes, even 'I have to clean the house'(taking a hint from my wife who has a habit of cleaning while I put the kids to bed.)

This book is hilarious because you can totally relate. I love how with each turning of the page, the background gets darker and darker. I love his Pigeon series but I have to say that this is my favorite.

Editorial Review:

It’s getting dark out, but one stubborn Pigeon is NOT going to bed! Toddlers and parents will love this interactive bedtime romp, which puts readers back in the driver’s seat, following all of Pigeon’s sly trickery as he tries to outsmart the inevitable bedtime.
