NOT a Beginners Guide to Electronics 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I've always been particularly fascinated by electronics, circuits, and the whole realm in general, and I bought this book with the hopes of expanding that interest into a constructive hobby.

I have had basic experience with electronics in the past, and taken classes in Differential Equations, Calc 1-3, Linear Algebra, Physics, even some intro Electrical/Computer Engineering courses (all a long time ago though), but WOWee is this book complicated. It's 1300 pages and EVERY SINGLE PARAGRAPH is filled with mind crushing complexity.

Maybe it's all just above me, but from a complete beginners standpoint, this was far too difficult a first step.

I'll try to forge ahead (the author says don't get discouraged by the complex Math), but I have a feeling I will understand less and less the more I read.

Editorial Review:

This is the thoroughly revised and updated second edition of the hugely successful The Art of Electronics. Widely accepted as the authoritative text and reference on electronic circuit design, both analog and digital, this book revolutionized the teaching of electronics by emphasizing the methods actually used by circuit designers -- a combination of some basic laws, rules of thumb, and a large bag of tricks. The result is a largely nonmathematical treatment that encourages circuit intuition, brainstorming, and simplified calculations of circuit values and performance. The new Art of Electronics retains the feeling of informality and easy access that helped make the first edition so successful and popular. It is an ideal first textbook on electronics for scientists and engineers and an indispensable reference for anyone, professional or amateur, who works with electronic circuits.

A Fantastic Theory 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Even though these lectures are more than 20 years old, Feynman did an incredible job of explaining a fundamental concept in Physics. I can see now why he received the Nobel prize for his work in this area. I would call him the Carl Sagan of Physics, except that Mr. Sagan's popularity came later in time. QED is so bizarre and incredible, yet so accurate and powerful a theory that it boggles the mind! Mr. Feynman's explanation is so complete and articulate that anyone can understand it. This theory explains the physical underpinnings of most of our daily experience, the interactions of photons with matter, yet it is a complete surprise!

Editorial Review:

Celebrated for his brilliantly quirky insights into the physical world, Nobel laureate Richard Feynman also possessed an extraordinary talent for explaining difficult concepts to the general public. Here Feynman provides a classic and definitive introduction to QED (namely quantum electrodynamics), that part of quantum field theory describing the interactions of light with charged particles. Using everyday language, spatial concepts, visualizations, and his renowned "Feynman diagrams" instead of advanced mathematics, Feynman clearly and humorously communicates both the substance and spirit of QED to the layperson. A. Zee's new introduction places both Feynman's book and his seminal contribution to QED in historical context and further highlights Feynman's uniquely appealing and illuminating style.

Griffiths EM 5 out of 5 stars.

I didn't really learn vector calculus until this book came along. It does in a few paragraphs that takes a whole section in a calc book to do and makes more sense.

A road map to Electricity and Magnetism 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was a part of my favorite physics course ever, Electricity and Magnetism. The excersises are of great value to anyone taking entrance exams or the GRE subject test. Explanations may take a few tries to grasp fully but if you do the proper math reviews and take the time to become intimate with the material you will be rewarded with a superior understanding of the subject.

You need this book to understand the fundamentals of Electrodynamics 5 out of 5 stars.

I used the greek translation for my undergrad electrodynamics. I would agree with some reviewers that it might not be too mathematically advanced. But you need to read it to understand the fundamentals. It gives a very clear and crisp view of the fundamental theory of electromagnetism. If you want to go beyond that and use more advanced mathematics try Electricity and Magnetism (Berkeley Physics Course - Volume 2) which is an amazing book. I think with these two you are unbeatable.

Editorial Review:

Features a clear, accessible treatment of the fundamentals of electromagnetic theory. Its lean and focused approach employs numerous examples and problems. Carefully discusses subtle or difficult points. Contains numerous, relevant problems within the book in addition to end of each chapter problems and answers.

Gaps in conceptual explanations: not for the intelligent reader 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I currently use this book to teach at the University of Michigan. (I chose it because it's what has been used here before.) The book is written in an accessible, reader-friendly style. It has many examples and pictures, which make it attractive -- a feature, I suppose, that is necessary to hold an undergrad's attention in these times we live in.

But what annoys me is the absence of conceptual rigor/detail and the sudden jumps in explanation. I want my students to be able to see what is going on and appreciate the simple elegant logic of microeconomic theory. Instead the book reads like it's delivering information to you, but isn't really explaining why it makes sense.

Here's an example. In Section 4.2 on Income and Substitution Effects, the effect of a price change is decomposed into income and substitution effects using constant utility. But as many of us know, there's an alternative way to do this too, which is holding purchasing power constant. For some reason that approach isn't mentioned. Instead, the text reads as though we were interested in the constant purchasing power approach, but then suddenly switches to a constant utility approach by saying "This substitution is marked by a movement along an indifference curve." But why? Wouldn't any intelligent student at this point start wondering how we went from purchasing power to utility? Flip back to Section 4.1 and find that the word utility has been quietly introduced there in a sentence that's in parentheses: "(Because the price of food has risen, the consumer's purchasing power -- and thus attainable utility -- has fallen.)"

Pooh. I don't like books that sneak important ideas into parentheses in order to avoid answering the all important question -- i.e. "Why?"

Editorial Review:

This book is well known for its coverage of modern topics (Game theory, Economics of Information, and Behavioral Economics), clarity of its writing style and graphs, and integrated use of real world examples. The emphasis on relevance and application to both managerial and public-policy decision-making are focused goals of the book. This emphasis is accomplished by including MANY extended examples that cover such topics as the analysis of demand, cost, and market efficiency; the design of pricing strategies; investment and production decisions; and public policy analysis. Economists and strategists looking to stay current with economic information.

Great to assist with signal analysis 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am currently taking my first semester in systems and signal analysis. While the subject matter is a little intimidating in terms of math, this outline cuts through the generalities and provides great, worked out, stepped out examples for everything from the basic properties of LTI systems to convolution, laplace transforms, z-transforms, fourier analysis, and space state analysis. Between the class text and this outline, I am very well prepared for future classes in signals and systems. I would recommend this book to anyone who feels they may need a little help with signal analysis, especially since the price is right.

Editorial Review:

The effects of DSP has entered every phase of our lives, from singing greeting cards to CD players and cell phones to medical x-ray analysis. Without DSP, there would be no Internet. In recent years, every aspect of engineering and science has been influenced by DSP because of the ubiquitous desktop computer and readily available signal processing software. This book provides engineers and scientists, who are relative beginners to DSP, their best opportunity to learn the basic mathematical and practical-engineering aspects of the burgeoning field of DSP. The book strikes the right balance of mathematical level, and practical engineering guidance, making it accessible to the beginner without dumbing down the topic of DSP. This edition of Understanding Digital Signal Processing will continue bridging the gap between DSP theory and practice. The presentation of additional quadrature processing material makes the book more relevant, and useful, to DSP practitioners in the burgeoning fields of digital communications and wireless networking systems. The new digital filtering material covers modern filter design techniques not covered in our competitor's books. Finally, the popular 'Digital Signal Processing Tricks' material will be expanded to further aid working DSP engineers solve their day-to-day signal processing problems as they design and build commercial products and aerospace systems.

Just Plain Mean 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

According to some other reviews this text makes an excellent reference for professionals. However, they've already taken the tests, and been through the classes. In short they already have their Phd. If you know the majority of readers of your book are coming to you to improve their understanding or learn entirely new material, why would you make difficult stuff even harder by intentionally omitting derivation steps in every section of every chapter. With the deadlines and time constraints associated with student life it's almost impossible to get through all the difficult derivations in the reading before even getting to the sometimes insane problems in a reasonable time. Either try to make the reading as clear as possible, and the problems challenging, or reduce the difficulty of the problems and have the reading challenging like it is now, but don't challenge the usually involuntary student readers with both difficulties. I may change my opinion later, but for now I feel that the level of difficulty and style of this text is based largely on the cruelty of the author.

Editorial Review:

A revision of the defining book covering the physics and classical mathematics necessary to understand electromagnetic fields in materials and at surfaces and interfaces. The third edition has been revised to address the changes in emphasis and applications that have occurred in the past twenty years.
