Good book, too much fluff 4 out of 5 stars.

As you'll read in other reviews this book does a great job of laying the foundation on how to implement XP as a development process using user stories, iterations, and other concepts used in XP.

Where the book goes a little overboard is with some drawn out stories and examples that could be cut down. In reality I think this book could almost have 1/3 less long and been a 5 star book.

The concept of user stories has its roots as one of the main tenets of Extreme Programming. In simple terms, user stories represent an effective means of gathering requirements from the customer (roughly akin to use cases). This book describes user stories and demonstrates how they can be used to properly plan, manage, and test software development projects. The book highlights both successful and unsuccessful implementations of the concept, and provides sets of questions and exercises that drive home its main points. After absorbing the lessons in this book, readers will be able to introduce user stories in their organizations as an effective means of determining precisely what is required of a software application.

There are three versions of the second edition, only one of which has the CD:

The first one is published by the MIT Press, with the title "Introduction to Algorithms". This one has no CD. This is the one Amazon currently carries, so if you buy from Amazon, you get no CD.

The second one is published by McGraw-Hill, also with the title "Introduction to Algorithms". This one also has no CD.

The third one is published by McGraw-Hill too, but has the title "Introduction to Algorithms and Java CD-ROM". This is the one with the CD. It's much more expensive than the other two.

The CD in the third version contains implementations of the algorithms in Java.

To find someone that carries the CD version, search for this ISBN-13 number: 9780072970548 , or for "Introduction to Algorithms and Java CD-ROM" .

Note: Some listings that come up for the ISBN number will not be the correct version. Look carefully for "and Java CD-ROM" before buying.

This book is required reading for anyone who is serious about software development. If you want to go from good to great then do yourself a favor and get this book.

I was referred to this book from a colleague after a quick discussion on "Replace temp with Query" in our projects code base.

I thought I knew it all as a software developer, but reading this book, I soon came to realize that as a software developer I was leaving a legacy of code that was not at the standard it should be.

This book opened my eyes to some really simple concepts, for example, when trying to understand code someone else has written (or yourself in some cases) take the time to re-factor the code (i.e. Extract Method) so that the code is understandable, since most of the work is spent in trying to understand the code in the first place. This concept of modifying code as you understand it is superb.

I must say I was skeptical at first but the benefits are really starting to show. This book is written with the knowledge of Martin Fowler, and as such is written with experience of what it is like to be a developer in a commercial environment, for example, trying to explain to management the trade-offs of re-factoring first instead of "tacking on" that new feature. Something that is difficult in any environment.

This book will by no means solve your problems, but it will empower you with a new found love to make the IT project(s) you work on better (i.e. not thinking of the now but the future) practice some of the smaller concepts this book presents on a daily basis and the rewards are well worth it, break those bad habits today.

Wrong Approach For Christians to Use 1 out of 5 stars.

Buford attempts to provide a process for the middle aged ("half timers") to improve the second half of their lives. Buford believes:

"the second half of your life can be better than the first. Much better. But first, you need time to figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life. So he recommends that a reader call "halftime" to reflect not only on where he's going, but why. What is the source of Buford's wisdom? A "blend of personal insight, true-life examples, and quotes from those who have successfully navigated the exhilarating and potentially dangerous shoals of midlife."

Despite its portrayal as a resource for Christians, Half Time is essentially a "man made" process for making decisions because it:

1. wrongly assumes that everyone has a similar history ("first half" experiences) and needs;

2. measures success ("significance") by man made criteria;

3. replaces biblical sanctification (getting closer to God) with accomplishing certain steps to obtain significance;

4. presupposes that a "one size fits all" process will work to make major life decisions; and

5. gives the false impression that a formula can be implemented to secure one's future.

We are led to believe that there are many options besides learning Scripture to know God and acquire direction for our lives as Christians. Half Time demonstrates the danger of elevating "man's wisdom" above biblical sanctification (an intimate relationship with God) as a means of establishing goals or direction for ones life.

Teachings such as Half Time confuse the process of knowing God's will for our lives. It places action before relationship and puts trust in one's own calculations rather than in God. When we embrace self improvement programs characterized as Christian "teaching", we remain at the mercy of our circumstances. Man's wisdom is limited. By contrast, learning Scripture equips us to operate in the spiritual world. When we are consumed by God's presence in our lives, we are truly free of our circumstances -thereby able to successfully navigate and even minister in any situation. "Success" no longer depends upon implementing a plan that may or may not happen, but is measured by knowing God.
