This publication gives me a good understanding of the basics of using my PC, in words that were very easy to understand.

Editorial Review:

PCs are leaving the stores and landing on desktops faster than ever. Unfortunately, while PC technology has improved, the reference material included with most new PCs has not. Now you can throw away that jargon-filled owner's manual and replace it with PCs For Dummies, 7th Edition. Acclaimed computing author Dan Gookin takes readers by the hand, assures them that the Delete key will not wipe out a computer's memory, and leads them on a journey through Their new toy (uh, I mean tool). PCs For Dummies, 7th Edition, covers all the options new users want to know about, from Internet searching to using suite software and Windows (3.x, 95, and 98). It also explains the topics new users need to know like file management and basic, non-destructive troubleshooting. Readers will also enjoy coverage on using PC extension devices like scanners, digital cameras, handheld and laptop computers, WebTV, and network PCs.

Very helpful 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

If you have basic knowledge of computer parts, this book is excellent at helping you track down which part of the computer is most likely causing whatever problems you might be having.

Editorial Review:

A unique visual approach to troubleshooting PC hardware problems. Morris Rosenthal creates a visual expert system for diagnosing component failure and identifying conflicts. The seventeen diagnostic flowcharts at the core of this book are intended for the intermediate to advanced hobbyist, or the beginning technician. Following a structured approach to troubleshooting hardware reduces the false diagnoses and parts wastage typical of the "swap 'till you drop" school of thought. Flowcharts include: Power Supply Failure, Video Failure, Video Performance, Motherboard, CPU, RAM Failure, Motherboard, CPU, RAM Performance, IDE Drive Failure, Hard Drive Boot and Performance, CD or DVD Playback, CD or DVD Recording Problem, Modem Failure, Modem Performance, Sound Failure, Sound and Game Controller Performance, Network Failure, Peripheral Failure, SCSI Failure and Conflict Resolution.

*Would you like to use a consistent visual notation for drawing integration solutions? Look inside the front cover. *Do you want to harness the power of asynchronous systems without getting caught in the pitfalls? See "Thinking Asynchronously" in the Introduction. *Do you want to know which style of application integration is best for your purposes? See Chapter 2, Integration Styles. *Do you want to learn techniques for processing messages concurrently? See Chapter 10, Competing Consumers and Message Dispatcher. *Do you want to learn how you can track asynchronous messages as they flow across distributed systems? See Chapter 11, Message History and Message Store. *Do you want to understand how a system designed using integration patterns can be implemented using Java Web services, .NET message queuing, and a TIBCO-based publish-subscribe architecture? See Chapter 9, Interlude: Composed Messaging. Utilizing years of practical experience, seasoned experts Gregor Hohpe and Bobby Woolf show how asynchronous messaging has proven to be the best strategy for enterprise integration success. However, building and deploying messaging solutions presents a number of problems for developers.Enterprise Integration Patterns provides an invaluable catalog of sixty-five patterns, with real-world solutions that demonstrate the formidable of messaging and help you to design effective messaging solutions for your enterprise. The authors also include examples covering a variety of different integration technologies, such as JMS, MSMQ, TIBCO ActiveEnterprise, Microsoft BizTalk, SOAP, and XSL. A case study describing a bond trading system illustrates the patterns in practice, and the book offers a look at emerging standards, as well as insights into what the future of enterprise integration might hold. This book provides a consistent vocabulary and visual notation framework to describe large-scale integration solutions across many technologies. It also explores in detail the advantages and limitations of asynchronous messaging architectures. The authors present practical advice on designing code that connects an application to a messaging system, and provide extensive information to help you determine when to send a message, how to route it to the proper destination, and how to monitor the health of a messaging system. If you want to know how to manage, monitor, and maintain a messaging system once it is in use, get this book. 0321200683B09122003

Conquers the Leopard 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've been a Mac person since 1992 - just bought a MacBookPro and wss chugging along fine...till a couple of applications disappear from the Dock. (If you don't know what a Dock is, you really need this book!)

How do I figure this out? I type half a dozen phrases into the help form...no luck. So I look up this book and there it was. I learn all sorts of other things too.

Well, sometimes the online manuals just don't go far enough or they're too cumbersome to use. Who wants to spend half an hour tracking down a single phrase? When that happens, this book nicely fills the gap.

Easy and fun to read with many clear diagrams and screen shots. A nice companion to your new Mac!

Book 5 out of 5 stars.

There is so much information in this one little book. It's one of my favorites.

Best basic computer book 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent for learning the basics of computers and the MAC. I started with the PC but changed to the MAC and found the book to be an excellent introduction to basic use of the computer as well as MAC in particular. If I could have found a book like this one, I probably wouldn't have gotten the MAC. Written in very understandable language for the beginner.

Editorial Review:

A thoroughly revised edition of the classic Macintosh reference offers readers quick, easy access to the Macintosh environment. Original.

I acually read this book cover to cover theres alot of information in the book and its a great book to refer back to. Its really good as a companion with OpenGL. theres some directx stuff in it too but there seems to be more with OpenGL references.

how to live without it 5 out of 5 stars.

Real-time rendering is a perfect resource to bring always :) with you and read something about this world.

I find it really useful and elegant and complete

No source code. This makes this book absolutely meaningless. 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 32 people found this review helpful.

The primarily reason to buy that book was reviews. There is no CD and no examples. So if you are a developer and want to see some code or examples, do not waste money on it. I think I am the only one who gave this book 1 star. This makes this book absolutely meaningless.

Editorial Review:

Thoroughly revised, this third edition focuses on modern techniques used to generate synthetic three-dimensional images in a fraction of a second. With the advent or programmable shaders, a wide variety of new algorithms have arisen and evolved over the past few years.

This edition discusses current, practical rendering methods used in games and other applications. It also presents a solid theoretical framework and relevant mathematics for the field of interactive computer graphics, all in an approachable style.

and I always thought dummies books were for complete beginners... 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Caveat emptor to the absolute beginner. This book is not written for the beginning web page creator. It is not written in a tutorial style. It is good as a reference source as you study a true tutorial type book. It discusses tags and their attributes one at a time without showing you how they fit into your web page code. The beginning chapters throw lots of advanced features at you and tell you they will be discussed in chapter 19 etc.
I was completely overwhelmed after 20 min of reading. So what's a beginner to do? I recommend Create Your First Web Page in a Weekend. By the time you get half way through that book then you can use this dummies book as a reference.
