A timeless masterpiece for children of all ages 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Horton Hears a Who is a masterpiece. Often heralded as a book on friendship, it is much more than that. Theodor Seuss Geisel was an outspoken critic of Hitler and Mussolini, and Horton Hears a Who has been said to have been Geisel's call to support the fledgling democracy in Japan after World War II. But Horton is much more than that. Horton Hears a Who is a reminder of the importance of protecting those weaker than we and a timeless call for people to unite and speak up for themselves.

Horton ! 5 out of 5 stars.

Very pleased with quick shipping, a quality product as described, and would do business again with Amazon. Saw the movie and read the book with grandkids. What a joy for them and me. Satisfied customer. psw - S.E.Oklahoma

Horton, My Hero 5 out of 5 stars.

If you haven't seen "Suessical the Musical" by all means do so. This clever adaption of Suess books and characters is just wonderful. The Horton books are primarily the source of this children's musical. Horton again shows what a fine elephant he is by standing fast to his ideals. Children can learn a lot by reading this rhyming, entertaining book.

Editorial Review:

Illus. in color. Horton, the lovable elephant, tries to protect tiny creatures on a speck of dust. An easy reader with delightful verse and pictures.

Gorgeous Illustrations 5 out of 5 stars.

Have always loved Bloom County. So when I was looking for children's books for my nieces I found this and the artwork is fabulous and the story is too cute for words. Great for someone tired of fairy tales and little princesses. The girls loved it very much!

Sweet, funny and touching 5 out of 5 stars.

I loved this book. I gave it as a baby gift to a die-hard Bloom County fan, and it is Berke Breathed at his finest. The illustrations are beautiful (of course they would be), and the story is touching without being cheesy. It is funny, too, in true Bloom County fashion. I recommend this to anyone (kid, adult, whatever)!

Editorial Review:

Pete is a perfectly predictable, practical, uncomplicated pig. At least, he was . . . before a runaway circus elephant named Pickles stampeded into his life, needing a friend. Pickles is larger than life and overflowing with imagination. She takes Pete swandiving off Niagara Falls. (Sort of.) And sledding down the Matterhorn. (Sort of.) Pete goes along for the wild ride and actually begins to enjoy himself . . . until Pickles goes too far. And Pete tells her she must leave.

Yet sometimes the simple life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Pulitzer Prize–winning cartoonist Berkeley Breathed offers two new irresistible characters and a heartfelt, hilarious look at the rarity of true friendship.

& has for years. This is a good story that teaches a kid to "hang in there" when things are unpleasant. It also teaches about keeping promises, & the good things that can happen when you do.

Teaching about loyalty and perseverance 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a lovely story about in my opinion the most lovable character of Dr. Seuss.

Horton agrees to take care of Mazie's egg and she never returns, but he sticks to his promise about caring for the egg no matter how many troubles it may bring him, and in the end is rewarded by the hatching of an elephant-bird.

Not only is it a beautiful story, with great rhymes, but it also teaches the importance of loyalty and perseverance to children. My son (3 1/2y.o.) got this story only yesterday and he already loves this book. So do I.

Editorial Review:

Illus. in color by the author. It's the talk of the jungle when an elephant hatches an egg. Extravagant nonsense and rollicking verse.

Great fun for the whole family 5 out of 5 stars.

My husband and I grew up on Babar. So when we saw this book we bought for our 4 month old son. He loves to hear our voices as we read to him and he also loves the bright colored pictures. We enjoy the memories that the stories bring back to us. A great addition to anyones collection.

TIP: We take the dust cover of any of his books that have dust covers and put them in plastic sleeves for later when we are sure he will not rip them up. That way when he is older the book looks like new even though it really is old.

"Do you see in this life how one must never be discouraged?" 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This one volume contains all six Babar stories written and illustrated by Jean de Brunhoff between 1931 and 1937, when the author died prematurely of tuberculosis. After seven decades, Babar the elephant is still beloved by young and old alike. Included are: "The Story of Babar"; "The Travels of Babar"; "Babar the King"; "Babar and Zephir"; "Babar and His Children"; and "Babar and Father Christmas".

From his earliest days, when his mother is shot by a hunter and he is left to fend for himself in the world, Babar is a curious and independent spirit. He makes his way to the city, where a kindly old lady gives him her purse; he purchases "a shirt with a collar and tie, a suit of a becoming shade of green, then a handsome derby hat and also shoes with spats". All decked out in new clothes, Babar is ready for whatever awaits, as he mixes with society, entertaining all with tales of his life in the forest. Later, when two of Babar's cousins arrive in the city, Babar outfits them both in new clothes. Returning with his cousins to the forest in the old lady's elegant roadster, Babar is so impressive that he is crowned King, his new fiancé, Celeste, the new Queen.

On their honeymoon, Babar and Celeste enjoy many adventures and misadventures all over the globe, returning to discover that the herd has gone to war with the rhinoceroses, a situation requiring careful strategy for success. Finally victorious, Babar promises to rule the kingdom wisely, and so he does in the following stories. In "Babar the King", the herd builds a city where all the animals peacefully coexist. There are schools, parks, automobiles; everything is perfect, save those few strokes of bad luck to remind Babar that we must never be discouraged in the face of adversity.

Each story is filled with realism, encouragement and hope in the face of difficulties, magical adventures touched with the give and take of life and the need to overcome challenges with a good heart. With a gallery of friends, Babar's life is defined by enthusiasm, a willingness to care for others and joy in simple things, family and community. Born in 1899, the author created an alternative universe in a country soon to face the First World War, his artistic vision come to fruition in Babar, a character beloved by generation after generation. Luan Gaines/2006.

Editorial Review:

In 1931 Jean de Brunhoff created Babar, a little elephant who walked out of the jungle and into the hearts of civilized readers the world over. Widely recognized as the father of the picture book, Jean de Brunhoff wrote and illustrated six Babar stories before his early death in 1937. Every word and every picture of these classics is included in this big, inviting gift edition.

Excellent toddler book! 5 out of 5 stars.

My daughter loves this book! Never fails to get lots of belly laughs. The text in the thought bubbles is really secondary to the telling of the story that goes on via the drawings of Elephant and Piggie. This has been a bedtime favorite for some time and still has not gotten old - highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

Best-selling picture book creator Mo Willems continues his charming Elephant and Piggie first reader series.

The books feature two lovable and funny characters: an optimistic (and sometimes reckless) pig and a cautious, pessimistic elephant.  Children who sat on their parents' laps to have Pigeon read to them will eagerly take the plunge with these books to start reading on their own.  Each book has been vetted by an early learning specialist.  These sweet and surprising stories are a much-needed breath of fresh air in the early reader arena.

In There Is a Bird On My Head!, Gerald discovers that there is something worse than a bird on your head-two birds on your head!  Can Piggie help her best friend?

great early reader series 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

My son loves the whole Elephant & Piggie series. In fact, these books are what taught him to read at age 4. They are repetitive and use short, easy words. Plus, they are hilarious. My son wants to read them each night. "I Love My New Toy" was just as funny as the rest of the ones we have. Mo Willems is the best children's author out there, in my opinion. We have all of his books, and they get read repeatedly. The whole family enjoys them when they are read aloud.

Book Review: I Will Surprise My Friend 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Scaring people is fun. There is really no getting around this fact. Kids know this better than anyone. Mo Willems knows that kids know this better than anyone. And now he's gone and written a book about it. Fitting right in with previous "Elephant & Piggie" titles, "I Will Surprise My Friend" provides a situation kids will relate to, presented with playfulness, wit, and an ace sense of humor.

The story begins when Gerald (the Elephant) and Piggie come upon a squirrel who is about to surprise his friend. They like the idea so much they decide to give it a try on on each other. They creep up to opposite sides of a big rock and wait to get startled. This setup is ripe for some silliness. Gerald and Piggie both start to wonder where the other one is. They look around the rock at the same time - no one there. They walk around the rock at the same time - nothing. When our heroes finally give up and head out to find each other, they finally get the shock they were hoping for.

The author's knack for getting inside the head of youngsters and seeing things from their perspective is on display here. From the way Gerald and Piggie immediately want to try something they see to how they end up waiting for the other one to scare them, beginning readers will identify with this title.

Willems continues to get his PHD in emotive minimalist illustration in "I Will Surprise My Friend". Each page brings expressions and gestures that announce the mood of each character as clear as day. Similar to other titles in this series, the story is told completely through dialog in the form of word balloons. This makes it a good choice for some good ol' individual reading. And kids will definitely want to read this one - be sure to have a couple copies on hand.

A treat for the adults too... 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I have a 1960 edition of Oliver and love to read it with my kids. Oliver the elephant has a simple and friendly conversation with everyone he meets throughout his day. This is one polite elephant. Mr. Hoff's unique use of colors and the light-hearted story will amuse you and make you want to search out more of his books. I have to admit that's why I logged on to Amazon today--and was flabbergasted to find 127 titles pop-up when I did a search on "Syd Hoff". Looks like I've got some work to do!

Fun Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a fun book for children to read. Stronger readers need very little help reading the book.

Two boys' review: One of Syd Hoff's better books for young boys 4 out of 5 stars.

Amazon has this book available through their 4-for-3 promotion. Take advantage of the savings and build your child's book collection.

Like Danny's Dinosaur, Oliver the Elephant is a kindly big fellow with the heart of a child. Naturally, my two young boys loved the idea of playing with an elephant who would let them ride on his back and slide down his trunk.

My sons' bookshelf holds roughly 80-100 books and Syd Hoff has three titles in our collection -- Oliver, Danny and the Dinosaur and Happy Birthday, Danny and the Dinosaur.

Editorial Review:

"I always wanted to work in the circus," said Oliver. "I could be a dancing elephant."

But the circus already has ten elephants and they don't need another one.  So, Oliver must find somewhere else to go.  After a series of comic adventures, Oliver's unique charm and talent win him the attention he deserves, and his dream finally comes true.

This is a very cute little story of an elephant becoming comfortable with who he is meant to be. The characters in this story help Sooki the elephant realize he is just fine the way he is. It's an easy read with a sweet ending. Nice illustrations as well.

The book came very quick & in great shape. But I found the book at Walmart for less.

Cute, sturdy book and a lovely story -- but beware; this version's abridged! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have loved this book since I had it read to me many years ago, and am excited to share it with my own child. A word of caution, however, regarding the "Little Golden Treasures" version -- it has been abridged from the original! A purist like myself will prefer a copy of the full version. I may still pick it up for our child sometime down the road. The story is a lovely one and the pictures are beautiful.

Editorial Review:

After a parrot makes fun of Sooki’s big ears, long nose, and wrinkled skin, the “saggy baggy” elephant isn’t too sure of himself. But once he meets some beautiful creatures who look just like him, Sooki celebrates with a joyful “one-two-three-kick.” For over 50 years, parents and children have treasured this tale, with gorgeous art by Gustaf Tenggren, the illustrator of The Poky Little Puppy.

I am 27 years old, have 0 children, 1 Master's degree in Speech Communication, and love to read books by Mo Willems. I find his books to be inspiring, philosophical, witty, interesting and visually enthralling. This is my current favorite book, although it's hard to claim a favorite when you know that with Willems- the best is yet to come!
