Anastasia Krupnik: Being ten is no laughing matter. 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I read "Anastasia Krupnik: Being ten is no laughing matter," by Lois Lowry, to assist my daughter with her 7th grade language arts assignment. The book was very well written and enjoyable to read.

The story is set in Boston, Massachusetts, where ten-year-old Anastasia is struggling with an identity crisis, eccentric parents, and the pain of growing up an only child in a secular household. Her father is an English professor who writes poetry and her mother is an artist who forgets to do the laundry, which is why they both wear socks that don't match. Anastasia writes a poem without rhyme or meter and reads it to her class, but her teacher doesn't appreciate modern poetry; she gives her an "F" and tells her to follow the rules when writing poems. She has an on-again, off-again crush on a boy who doesn't like her, a grandmother who can't remember her name due to the onset of dementia, and a baby brother soon to be born: even her goldfish "blurps" at her from within the confines of its bowl.

At one point Anastasia decides to become Catholic, so she can change her name, but she soon changes her mind when she learns that stealing cupcakes from her friend is a sin and she will have to confess her sins to become a Catholic. Anastasia chronicles the significant events of her life in a green notebook, listing things she loves in one column and things she hates in another. Sometimes the things she hates become the things she loves and vice versa. By the end of the story, there remains only one item on the list of things she hates - liver - but the list of things she loves is long. The story is told with humorous effect, even though some of the things that happen are sad.

There are a few troublesome comments about her teacher's anatomy and conversations between Anastasia and her parents sometimes show a lack of discretion, but all things considered, it is the tender account of a prepubescent little girl with a prodigious intellect and an eagerness to learn and grow. I wouldn't go so far as to call it a coming-of-age story, but it will definitely hold your little girl's interest and in a subtle way, let her know that she is not alone in her quest to overcome life's many tribulations. It even has a happy ending to boot.

Editorial Review:

Ages 8-12. The first and best book in the very popular series describes the ups and downs of a precocious ten-year-old girl. Anastasia loves keeping lists of important information in her green notebook; when she discovers that her mother is pregnant, she instantly adds two new items to her "things I hate" list: "My parents" and "babies." But as the year passes, Anastasia finds that the items on her lists keep moving around; by the time her baby brother is born, the only thing left to hate is liver. An unusually warm, insightful and original portrait of childhood and family life, this is a special and memorable story. Horn Book called Anastasia "an amusing and engaging heroine" and The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books wrote, "the whole book is a delight."

Editorial Review:

"As soon as I finish this chocolate pudding, I'm going to jump out the window." Twelve-year-old Anastasia Krupnik has just discovered that her parents are planning a move to the suburbs. And she happens to know that people in the suburbs do not have meaningful paintings on their walls. They have paint-by-numbers pictures of kittens with big eyes playing with balls of yarn. And in the place of bookcases they have giant TV sets with bowls of fake fruit on top. One look at their future house in the suburbs, however, and Anastasia falls in love. It's not long before she's meeting the neighbors, including a handsome tennis player and a witch named Gertrude Stein. And it takes hardly any time at all before she's immersed in just the kind of complicated messes that she seems to specialize in.

Award-winning author Lois Lowry has an undeniable knack for knowing the minds of young people, from Anastasia's 2-year-old brother in All About Sam to the 10-year-old Anastasia Krupnik to the precocious preteen character in this engaging novel. Don't miss the rest of Lowry's Anastasia series--as wildly funny, touching, and loaded with personality as Anastasia herself. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

The best Anastasia book in the series 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I have always loved the Anastasia books. I think that they are quite funny and are very realistic. I think that this book is the best in the series. This book is very funny when dealing with Anastasia's problems and pitfalls. Overall a terrific book.

Editorial Review:

Help! Anastasia Krupnik's mother must organize her chaotic life. So Anastasia, who is a very organized person, and her father invent the solution to Mrs. Krupnik's problem: the Krupnik Family Nonsexist Housekeeping Schedule.

But when Mrs. Krupnik goes to California on a ten-day business trip, Anastasia finds that the problem isn't solved at all. It's hard to stick to a schedule that doesn't leave room for her little brother, Sam, who's come down with the chicken pox, and her father's former girlfriend, who's invited herself to dinner. How is Anastasia supposed to cope with these interruptions when she's planning her first dream-date dinner for Steve Harvey?

It's a cinch. As long as she sticks to the Krupnik Romantic Dinner Week Schedule, what could possibly go wrong?

Anastasia's Chosen Career 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Have you ever thought about what you would like to be when you grow up? Anastasia Krupnik is a 13-year girl (the main character in this story) who wants to be a fashion model. Her dad, Dr. Krupnik wants her to own her own bookstore. If you read this book, you will learn that Anastasia has many funny adventures and meets new friends. Like riding the bus into the city by herself and meeting Henry Peabody. To find out if Anastasia will be a model or a bookstore owner you should read this book. Take my word for it this book is funny, but you make the decision.

Boring, lame, and just plain stupid book 1 out of 5 stars.

This book got on my nerves. I absolutely hated it, and couldn't bare to read anymore about halfway through. If you want a horribly boring experience, go on, read it. If not, stay away from this book. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Anastia's Chossen Carrer 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

"SWM, 28, boyish charm, inherited wealth, looking for tall young woman, nonsmoker, to share Caribbean vacations, reruns of Casablanca, and romance."

To 13-year-old Anastasia Krupnik, this Single White Male from the magazine personals section sounds perfect. And really, she's not lying when she writes to say she is tall, young, hates smoking, has seen Casablanca so many times she can recite some of it, is quite sure she would like Caribbean vacations, and is definitely ready for romance. And later, when she writes to say she owns a sloop and that she races occasionally, well, that's not exactly a lie either. Tension and hilarity build as Anastasia digs herself deeper into this embroilment. When SWM writes to say he would like to meet her, it looks like the jig is finally up. How will our outspoken, fast-thinking, SWF get herself out of this mess? Anastasia, the subject of many award-winning books by Lois Lowry, is a terrific modern role model for girls. Headstrong, independent, warm, and open, she manages to pull herself out of every one of the many predicaments she gets into. As she struggles with the changing feelings of adolescence, she maintains a good, yet realistic, relationship with her parents and young brother. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

If you love funny you have to read this book! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I recently read the book Anastasia Absolutely By Lois Lowry. It is a book for all ages because it is very funny. It is a chapter book and the reading level is 4.5, but everyone in your family will love the book. The characters in the book are Anastasia, her dog, Mom, Dad, the police, and her little brother. Anastasia's mother tells her to take the dog for a walk and mail a very important letter to a publisher. Like most people Anastasia carries a plastic bag with her to carry her dog's dodo. When Anastasia gets to the mailbox she is not paying any attention and puts the dog's dodo in the mailbox instead of the letter to the publisher that is already a day late. Anastasia does not notice until she gets home what she has done. Obviously now she cannot go back to the mailbox and take it out. The next day on her way to school Anastasia sees the police at the mailbox. When she comes home from school the mailbox is gone. Anastasia thinks she will be arrested because what she did is a federal offense. This story takes place in the winter a few years ago. I recommend you read this book because it is a very funny book and everyone will love it. I give it 4.5 stars and one great review.

Editorial Review:

The trouble begins when Anastasia goes to the mailbox with two packages and her new dog, Sleuth. It's there that she accidentally puts the bag of dog droppings into the mailbox instead of her mother's package. When she realizes her mistake, Anastasia uses her school Values Class experience to help her decide what to do. But when the police take the corner mailbox, Anastasia's sure she's committed a crime that will land her in jail.
