A must read for young ball players 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

My boys (9 and 14) have read many of Matt Christopher's books. All are good, some are great treats. I gave a copy of "The Kid Who Only Hit Homers" to each boy on my baseball team last year. They loved it! This year I am giving each player a copy of Christopher's "Great Moments." I read this collection of great moments (an unassisted triple play in the World Series for example) to my boys and enjoyed every page. We re-read some of the stories they were so much fun. This is a must read for all young/new baseball fans.

Good stuff 5 out of 5 stars.

Matt Christopher is one of the best baseball writers for young readers out there. This is another notch in his belt. Pick this up.

Courage Displayed on a baseball diamond 5 out of 5 stars.

In Great Moments In Baseball History, you can learn a lot about some of the greatest players in major league history. Matthew Christopher, the author of this book, put together his view of a 9 tremendous, and courageous pitching performances, hitting clinics, catches, and life stories in this book. Some people who are in the book are strong, courageous, have stamina, but most of all, each person has their own little characteristic different than everyone else's. Anyone who asks me about this book, all I have to tell them is that it is a great read and a wonderful grouping of stories that any true baseball fan can enjoy time and time again.
All of these stories are incredible in their own special way. For example, there is a story about a pitcher who only had one hand and he threw a no hitter against a team who had in the previous week scored 7 runs against him, he showed to everyone that he had courage. Another story describes a pitcher who had cancer and was told that he would never pitch in the majors again, and it would be considered lucky to be able to play catch in the backyard with his son. Against all odds, after just 11 short months he was back in the majors and he was pitching great. Unfortunately he was diagnosed with cancer again and had his arm removed but he is still alive and well. Finally there is my favorite story of Joe Nuxhall who pitched in his first ever major league game at the tender young age of just 15. Although he was nervous he pitched well and was signed to a contract with the Cincinnati Reds at 16 years old (he was the youngest player ever to play major league baseball).
Matthew Christopher added great little details to every story to kind of add some drama to each one. For example, he told the audience how even though Babe Ruth was old and out of shape he could still hit three homeruns in a baseball game and have fun doing so. Another example is in the story of the pitcher with cancer, Christopher added in the detail of how he "might" be able to play catch with his son in the backyard to add some drama to the already dramatic situation. There are also so great word usages in the stories and he places every one of them in the perfect spot to help the reader make sense of everything.
Great Moments In Baseball History is a great book about heart warming, funny, and enlightening stories and people. Every story is different and exciting in that one special way that you can always remember. Also the author describes everything very well and it is easy to understand every word that is being said. Finally you can learn a lot from every person in the book and a piece of their life that may reach out and touch your own life.

Editorial Review:

Capturing the suspense and play-by-play action of nine major league plays and the personalities of the athletes that made them, a fan's treasury includes Willie May's 1954 World Series catch and Jim Abbott's no-hitter.

I would recommend this book not only to people who love soccer, but to everyone who enjoys a true story about a great athlete and role model. The story of Mia Hamm is basically about how she was introduced to soccer and how she follows her dream to be the best women's soccer player in the world.

The book is really better than it looks like! 5 out of 5 stars.

On teh field with Mia Hamm by Matt Christopher was a very goodbook. I didn't have a very good idea who Mia Hamm really was though. The only thing I know is a professional soccer player. I aw the book and it looked pretty interesting. I'm about a quarter of the way through the book and I'm liking it so far. Usually I don't read books , let alone a whole book.

Editorial Review:

Mia Hamm helped the 1996 Olympic team win the gold medal in soccer. Now for her fans and those who would like to know more about this fantastic athlete, this insightful story presents her complete story.

Not substantive enough 1 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I must agree with reviewer Ira Balli from London below. This book lacks substantive information regarding the quantitative methods and therefore is merely an introduction to quant ideas that have been discussed in the marketplace. Of course, anyone who might have proprietary and successful quant methods would be foolhardly to disclose them, so one should not expect that from any public writer.

As an alternative, some of the chapters covering quant strategies in "Trade Like a Hedge Fund : 20 Successful Uncorrelated Strategies & Techniques to Winning Profits" by James Altucher may be easier to read as introductory work.

Editorial Review:

Harnessing the Power of Quantitative Techniques to Create a Winning Trading ProgramLars Kestner Quantitative Trading Strategies takes readers through the development and evaluation stages of today's most popular and market-proven technical trading strategies. Quantifying every subjective decision in the trading process, this analytical book evaluates the work of well-known "quants" from John Henry to Monroe Trout and introduces 12 all-new trading strategies. It debunks numerous popular misconceptions, and is certain to make waves--and change minds--in the world of technical analysis and trading.

skateboard tough 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

What it's about is a boy named Brett was skateboarding on his driveway. Then a couple of construction workers hit a box while they where digging in the front yard. They gave the box too Brett, so he grabbed a screwdriver, and a hammer using it like a hammer and chisel too open it up. Then when he opened the box he found a skateboard with bog letters saying "the lizard'', but every time he steps foot on the skateboard he gets much better at skateboarding, he can do tricks he never could do on his old skateboard "the cobra''. But on3e of his friends W.E looked up on a search site "the lizard skateboarding'' and it came up with a story about a skateboarder who was about too go pro but then one day when he was skateboarding he came around a corner and got hit by a car, and his parents buried the skateboard in the front yard because they didn't want any bad memories of him. Then his nabor built a skate park in her back yard because of what Brett wrote on a newsletter too the editor. He entered one competition and he came in 1st place and his worst enemy names john entered the competition also but he came in second. This is a really good book and I recommend for people too read this

The Crakerjack Halfback Review 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The book Crackerjack Halfback by Matt Christopher is about a boy named Freddie Chase who is a football player.Freddies problem is he is scared to tackle.Freddie plays on the team called the Sandpipers and they're fighting to finish in first place. His coach named Coach Sears and his team mates are depending him.I've played football for five years and I can relate to Freddies touchdown experiences.I remember my coach yelling at me like Freddie's coach did to him.My practices were hard like his.

I like the book because its about football. My favorite parts were the games he played in.I would not change the ending of the book or its ending because it all work out for eveybody in the end.

I would recommend this book to another person because its about football. The type of person who would like this book is a person who likes football like me.

Editorial Review:

Freddie Chase is one of the best halfbacks on the squad, but he's got one problem . . . he's afraid to tackle! Will he be able to overcome this fear, or will it bench him? Illustrated.

Golf's never been so interesting 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Boy or girl, young or old, readers will love reading about Tiger Woods' inspiring rise to the top of the golf world. Overcoming racism, economic hardship, and personal limitations, Tiger leads the pack at an incredibly young age. My 9-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter and I read this together, and we were all equally enthralled and inspired by Tiger's story. It was accessible without being overly simple. We're looking forward to reading more entries in Matt Christopher's biography series.

The book tells you about his life and things that happened. 4 out of 5 stars.

Tiger is a very fast learner. He even learned when he was 8 months old. He went to many tournaments. His father was even in the Vietnam war. I liked this book because it tells about his cool life.

An exciting and fabulous book! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

On a 1 to 10 scale I would give this book a 10 because it is a funny, family sports book. Ken Griffey Jr.'s dream was to play in the major Leagues like his father, and he achieved it.

If You Like a Leftey 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is a good one to read if you like to read about the Seattle Mariners. They list Randy Johnson, Alex Rodriguez, Edgar Martinez and how they got their victory and got into the playoffs. It talks about when Ken Griffey, Jr. was a kid and how he grew up with his father, who played for the Cincinnati Reds. He practiced with his dad sometimes in Yankee Stadium, until his dad couldn't strike him out anymore. It says who he got married to, his likes, his dislikes. All in all, I rate this a 5 star book.

Big Ken Griffy Jr 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I think this book is a good one because it's talking about
how Ken Griffy Jr. played baseball. His old teamates Alex Rodriguez, Edgar Martinez and Tino Martinez really wanted him to stay in Seattle.
Now he's meeting new teammates like Barry Larkin,Sean Casy,
and Pokey Resse. He's still getting in the playoffs. His father
wanted him in Cincinati. Ken said the Yankees are so easy to beat. He still misses the Mariners.

Editorial Review:

Action photos, Griffey's stats, and a list of career highlights are included in this biography of the charismatic outfielder. Matt Christopher explores the paths Griffey has traveled, the hardships he has overcome, and the highs and lows of his career.

Must read at the Plate with Derek Jeter 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The book I'm reviewing is At the Plate with Derek Jeter by Matt Christopher. I think this book deserves five stars. This book is a Derek Jeter biography. A problem that occurs in this story is when he's in high school. He almost gets cut from the team. This tells you how Derek Jeter became a pro baseball player. I would recommend this book to anybody.

Emerson N.J. fifth grade student

Editorial Review:

When he was a little boy, Derek Jeter dreamed only one dream -- he wanted to play shortstop for the New York Yankees. Today, Derek Jeter lives that dream, and more. He has been the team's star shortstop since 1996 and is a major reason the Yankees have won three World Series in that time. His outstanding play in the field combined with his powerful batting make him a force to be reckoned with, but it's his positive attitude and hard work that have earned him the respect and admiration of his teammates and his fans. In a sport filled with superstars, Derek Jeter has proven he has what it takes to rise to the top.

Not for children who still believe in Santa Claus - zero stars! 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book is HORRIBLE. It very plainly states that "there isn't any real santa claus. Your mom gives you the things on your list". The author also has kids making fun of another child who still believes in the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. The children in the book are seven, the same age as my daughter. I just can't believe that a book my first grader can read would flat out say there is no Santa Claus. Stay away from this book if you want your child to still believe in any childhood magic!

No stars for this book 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If this is how you'd like your child to find out there is no such thing as Santa Claus, if you'd like to teach your child that it is ok to laugh at other kids for what they believe in, if referring to other kids as "dumb" or "stupid" is how you'd like them to treat people, then this book is for you. For me, I was appalled at the escalating references to there not being a Santa Claus. I was hoping as the book progressed that tone would change but it didn't. After reading a couple of chapters with my daughter I fast forworded to the end for the shocking conclusion. Needless to say, the book disappeared from her bookshelf without being finished. Shame on Judy Delton and the publisher. Now I have an eight year old daughter questioning Christmas and Santa Clause. A children's Christmas book should not be the way your child finds out there is no Santa Claus. This book should have been titled a "Pee Wee Christmas Dream Killer." At least we'd have some forwarning.
