Editorial Review:

On an island off the coasts of Virginia and Maryland lives a centuries-old band of wild ponies. Among them is the most mysterious of all, Phantom, a rarely seen mare that eludes all efforts to capture her--that is, until a young boy and girl lay eyes on her and determine that they can't live without her. The frenzied roundup that follows on the next "Pony Penning Day" does indeed bring Phantom into their lives, in a way they never would have suspected. Phantom would forever be a creature of the wild. But her gentle, loyal colt Misty is another story altogether.

Marguerite Henry's Newbery Honor Book has captivated generations of boys and girls both with its thrilling descriptions of true incidents from the tiny island of Chincoteague, and its realistic yet wonderfully magical atmosphere. This story of an animal brought into captivity poignantly reveals the powerful opposing forces of humans and nature. Wesley Dennis's pen-and-ink ponies are masterfully depicted with rippling muscles, shaggy coats, and free spirits. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

Classic Book & the movie was a masterpiece 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is a must-read for any child. When I was young I read lots of Jack London books and I also read the entire Walter Farley Black Stallion series. Walter Farley's books are written in a very simple style, easy for young readers to understand. The movie is a timeless classic & was so well done. Some children will find the movie slow (no talking during the whole island sequence) but if your child appreciates beautiful images, and is horse-crazy, they'll love the film. I now own a black Arabian stallion of my own...so be careful, Black Stallion books can cause a lifelong horse addiction!

The Life Saving Horse 4 out of 5 stars.

What would you do if your horse saved you from the frightening death of drowning? Then what would you do if that horse was taken away from you? That is exactly what Alec thought of in the fictional book The Black Stallion written by Walter Farley.

Alec was on a ship back to his homeland, when the ship got in contact with a glacier. No one even thought of about saving that horrible, kicking, horse in the stables. Though Alec knew it was the right thing so he went into the stables and saved the horse. As they jumped off the ship, Alec was too weak to swim. So the stallion swam miles with Alec at the end of the stallions lead rope, until they saw land. They were stuck on that island fighting to survive as their friendship grew between them. One day a ship came and saved them. In a couple of days they would be at home. The stallion was named The Black and was kept in an older barn behind Alec's house.

I couldn't put this book down. This whole series was amazing. Anyone who loves horses would love these books. This book made me happy, nervous, and sad. It also made me cry. I think everyone should experience these feelings when you read a book.

Editorial Review:

First published in 1941, Walter Farley's best-selling novel for young readers is the triumphant tale of a boy and a wild horse. From Alec Ramsay and the Black's first meeting on an ill-fated ship to their adventures on a desert island and their eventual rescue, this beloved story will hold the rapt attention of readers new and old.

Wonderful Collection 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a very fine collection of Ms. Henry's books. One of my very favorite books as a child was "King of the Wind" and it was because I was looking it up that I found this collection. For anyone, young or old, who wants to enter into the wonderful, and magical world created by a well-crafted story, these three books will take the reader, and transport her/him into the lives of Agba, Joel Goss, and Paul and Maureen Beebe, and the horses that meant the world to them. There just is nothing like the relationship between a horse and the person who loves (and is loved in return) that horse! And there is no feeling on earth like the one you get on top of a horse, riding off down the trail. These books give the reader a look into the changes the love of a horse can bring about in a person's life, and I heartily recommend the books, especially if you haven't got a horse!

Editorial Review:

Sure enough, Darby soon sees Snowfire chase Black Lava onto ranch lands. Her horse charmer sense tells her the Crimson Vale herd needs to return home or desperation will lead Black Lava into more danger. Between finals at school and an upcoming rodeo, everyone is too busy to listen to Darby's fears. Can Darby help Snowfire and Black Lava before their battle turns deadly?

Wonderful historical fiction for young people......!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

My seven year old daughter and I finished this book last night. She was very sad to have it end. What a wonderful account of the devastating storm that hit the islands of Assateague and Chincoteague and the relief efforts to rebuild the islands and the devastated wild pony population.

It was very heartwarming to read in the epilogue excerpts from actual letters of children that sent in their hard earned money to buy back the ponies sold at previous Pony Penning Days to replenish the wild herds of Assateugue. These children and others like them preserved a tradition that had been maintained for over 100 years and because of them continues on today. In fact, Marguerite Henry dedicated this book to those very children that made it all possible.

Marguerite Henry does an excellent job of using local dialect in the telling of the story, especially with Grandpa and Grandma. You can not help but become involved in the characters and their concerns become very real to you.

I read this book many many years ago and had forgotten a great deal of the story. One of the things I did remember was Misty being put in Grandma's kitchen to wait out the storm.

If you are like me and read this book many years ago I encourage to reread it. You will be glad you did.

Editorial Review:

A foal, born in the aftermath of a great storm, and her famous mother help raise money to repair the storm damage on Chincoteague Island and restore the herds of wild ponies on Assateague Island.

Darby Carter is a horse girl - she's always had a fascination and love for them, even though she's never owned or ridden one. But after saving a wild filly from disaster, she adopts the horse and moves to Hawaii to live on her grandfather's ranch.

When she gets there, she's instantly in love with the pastures and horses that inhabit Io'lani Ranch. Excited for her own horse -- dubbed Hoku for the star emblazoned on her chest -- to arrive, she's surprised when the wild filly is a lot wilder than she remembered.

Darby is going to have to work hard with Hoku if she ever expects the horse to trust her. As unpredictable as the weather, Hoku is a horse to be wary of. But Darby has a strange connection to her, no matter how distant she may seem.

Horse lover or not, I think anyone can enjoy this book. The characters are so authentic and lifelike, it feels like I know them personally. I have no doubt that this will be an excellent series, and I'm dying to get my hands on the next book.

Darby Carter loves horses, even though she's never actually ridden one. Darby's grandfather is an expert rider—in fact, he owns a horse ranch in Hawaii. So when he agrees to take her in—along with the beautiful mustang Darby saved on the range in Nevada—she knows she can't refuse, even if she is a little terrified!

But Darby's filly arrives in bad shape, and Darby's grandfather wonders if the wild horse will ever trust a human again. Can Darby take the reins and save her horse—or has she lost the mustang forever?

A wonderful, wonderful set of stories... 5 out of 5 stars.

I read these books as a little kid... The illustrations are incredibly beautiful and lifelike, and the stories are equally enjoyable. Billy and Blaze's adventures would capture the heart and mind of any child -- or even adult! - with their emotional strength and superb literary quality. I can't recommend these books highly enough... every one of them.

Editorial Review:

Billy was a little boy who "loved horses more than anything else in the world." Imagine how happy he was when he got his very own pony for his birthday! From that day on, Billy was seldom seen without his new friend, Blaze.

Riding through fields and woods, Billy and Blaze learned to trust and understand one another -- and to jump over fences and fallen trees with ease. They were a great team, but were they good enough to win the gleaming silver cup at the Mason Horse Show?

This is the first book in the classic Billy and Blaze series. Sensitive drawings and easy-to-read words capture the warmth and gentle understanding between a boy and his horse.

Welcome to 'Moku Lio Hihiu', better known as Wild Horse Island. THE SHINING STALLION is Book 2 of Terri Farley's PHANTOM STALLION, WILD HORSE ISLAND series, and right away readers will join main character Darby Carter as she challenges her brand new filly Hoku in a nose-to-nose standoff. Darby has just moved in with her newfound grandfather, Jonah, at Iolani Ranch, his Hawaiian home, but between an error she makes handling one of the horses - and a clash with stylish older cousin Megan -things aren't going as well as she'd hoped. And then there's the alarming nighttime visit from a fiery black stallion that only Darby has seen. Is he the deadly 'Shining Stallion', a chilling island legend? Can Darby stop him from hurting anything - or anyone - else? Mystical tales from Hawaii's past and a magic bracelet charm enter the mix. Not to mention an all-too-modern crime, the theft of priceless Hawaiian artifacts.

The many methods and responsibilities involved in caring for horses blend nicely with the stallion mystery, making this an ideal book for serious young riding enthusiasts. But all readers will appreciate the exotic Hawaiian setting and spunky heroine as she struggles to win her place among the people and animals of Wild Horse Island. (Note: While THE SHINING STALLION succeeds as a stand-alone story, beginning with Book One might give a fuller picture of Darby's friends and family, especially her absent parents and enigmatic grandfather, Jonah. But the 'Darby's Diary/Dictionary' postcript does offer basic personal facts plus helpful Hawaiian terms and lore.)

Ms. Farley has a refined, classic writing style and flawless good taste. She avoids current slang and references to cell phones or other technology, giving her work a refreshing, timeless quality that still feels contemporary. The dramatic, satisfying final chapters retain enough mystery to carry Darby into her next adventure. No doubt her fans will be waiting.

Ever since Darby rescued her wild filly mustang, she's been having a tough time at her grandfather's ranch. And after she accidentally endangers one of his loyal and steady horses, she can't help but wonder if she really belongs on a horse ranch at all.

But then a shadowy horse shows up, prowling the grounds at night. Could it be the legendary Shining Stallion of Hawaii? And why is Darby the only one who has seen him? One thing is certain: When the mysterious stallion sets out to challenge the wrong horse, only Darby can stop him—before anyone gets hurt.

in this series. They love them.

Lovable Colt and good book 5 out of 5 stars.

The colt in this book is super lovable and the black sand beaches sound really cool.
Darby is out riding Navigator when she finds a cremello colt all on his own. It turns out that the colt belongs to Darby's aunt Babe who she meets in this book for the first time. Darby has to catch the colt before some one else does. some one else who only cares about the reward money. She also has to deal with Duxelle (Dew-shell) her cousin who is tall, mean and Darby accidentily gives the nick name "Duckie" too. I liked this book alot. and I'm going to buy it.

Editorial Review:

Darby is nervous about starting at her new school in Hawaii, and when she gets there it's even worse than she thought. Within the first week she's made an enemy—her stuck-up cousin from the other side of the island.

At least Darby has a new horse to go home to: a beautiful colt that she found abandoned on a remote beach. Darby loves the colt, and she knows he needs a good home. But when her new worst enemy's parents call to rescue him, will Darby be able to let him go?
