Editorial Review:

Miyax, like many adolescents, is torn. But unlike most, her choices may determine whether she lives or dies. At 13, an orphan, and unhappily married, Miyax runs away from her husband's parents' home, hoping to reach San Francisco and her pen pal. But she becomes lost in the vast Alaskan tundra, with no food, no shelter, and no idea which is the way to safety. Now, more than ever, she must look hard at who she really is. Is she Miyax, Eskimo girl of the old ways? Or is she Julie (her "gussak"-white people-name), the modernized teenager who must mock the traditional customs? And when a pack of wolves begins to accept her into their community, Miyax must learn to think like a wolf as well. If she trusts her Eskimo instincts, will she stand a chance of surviving? John Schoenherr's line drawings suggest rather than tell about the compelling experiences of a girl searching for answers in a bleak landscape that at first glance would seem to hold nothing. Fans of Jean Craighead George's stunning, Newberry Medal-winning coming-of-age story won't want to miss Julie (1994) and Julie's Wolf Pack (1998). (Ages 10 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Editorial Review:

When 13-year-old Julie Edwards Miyax Kapugen runs away from an arranged marriage at home, she becomes lost in the vast Alaskan tundra. Desperate to survive, she slowly befriends a pack of wolves, thus beginning a saga that is to continue over the course of several years, hundreds of miles, and three books. Following the gut-wrenching Newbery-winning classic Julie of the Wolves, Jean Craighead George created that rarest of beasts--the stellar sequel. Picking up where Julie of the Wolves left off, Julie follows the remarkable Eskimo girl's journey between two cultures: the traditional Eskimo way, living in harmony with nature, and the modern "Minnesota rules," relying on industry and cattle. It is only when Julie sets out to save her beloved wolf pack from her father that she learns how to reconcile the old ways with the new. With Julie's Wolf Pack, George continues the gripping Arctic adventures, now entirely from the wolves' perspective. Life on the Alaskan tundra is full of drama for the wolves: feast, famine, disease, puppies, challenges from rivals, and threat from humans. Without slipping into anthropomorphism, this book gives readers an extraordinary insight into the world of the wolf.

All three of these wholly spellbinding novels have been collected in this special boxed set of paperbacks--good thing, too, as you won't want to pause for a breath between any of them! (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Compelling 5 out of 5 stars.

Though this was a third book in a series, it was a wonderful read as a stand- alone novel. It is about an older girl who had lived with a wolf pack for seven months when she was lost in the Alaskan tundra.

This is the story of Kapu, Julie's half brother in the pack and his reestablishing the pack after the loss of his father.

It is also the coming of age love story of Julie and Peter and their desire to live as their ancestors did back out on the tundra.

Editorial Review:

From the author of the Newbery Medal-winning Julie of the Wolves and its sequel, Julie, comes a third exciting adventure about the wolf pack that saved the life of a young girl when she was lost on the tundra. Julie has returned to her family, but her wolf pack has a story all its own. Fearless but inexperienced Kapu is now the new leader of the pack. He must protect his wolves from the threats of famine and disease and, at the same time, defend himself from bitter rivals, both inside and outside the pack, who are waiting for their chance to overthrow him. The strength of Kapu's leadership will determine not just the well-being of the pack but its very survival.

Jean Craighead George's research and first-hand observation form this engrossing, epic tale that's sure to draw readers into the fascinating world of wolves.

The continous Alaskan novel Review on Julie 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is about a young girl living in Alaska, in the village of Kangik trying to get used to her new home. She hears that her father will kill her wolf pack if they kill another oxen. She then goes back out on the Tundra to find her pack and lead them to Caribou. This book is wonderful and teaches us about Eskimos and their traditions. It is a fantastic novel telling how one girl is so in touch with all other living things. If you love learning about other cultures or love Julie of the Wolves and want to see what happens next, then you have to read this amazing book!

Editorial Review:

Julie's decision to return home to her people is not an easy one. But after many months in the wilderness, living in harmony with the wolves that saved her life, she knows the time has come.

Julie is not prepared, however, for all the changes that she finds. Her father has forsaken many of the old Eskimo traditions. He has given up his sled dogs for a snowmobile, and now looks after the musk oxen that serve as the village's income. He will do anything to protect them -- even shoot any wolves that might threaten the herd. Julie knows that, like her father, she must find a way to reconcile the old ways with the new. But how can she do that without putting her beloved wolves in danger?

Julie of the Wolves was fantastic! 5 out of 5 stars.

Julie of the Wolves was fantastic! It is one of my favourite books. I think this book should get not just the Newbery Medal but also all the medals in the world! It talks about an Eskimo girl who is known as Miyax to her people but known as Julie to a friend in San Francisco. Because she hates school, she decides to marry so she can escape school. Her husband is rotten to her and she escapes to the tundra. She gets lost and is accepted by a pack of wolves. In the end, Julie has to decide her lifestyle-to be Miyax of the Eskimos or be Julie of the Wolves.

Julie, known as Miyax in the old days who lives in Alaska with her father, Kapugen after her mother dies finds herself lost in the artic Tundra after running from her husband, Daniel, at only 13 being forced to merrr him. After being in the Tundra where the lakes and rivers are frozen, where the dirt is solidly frozen keeping trees and large plants from growing she finds a pack of wolves. Slowly the pack of wolves begin to exept her as they near summer where she can not find her way home. Her favorite wolf pup, Kupa, named after Kupugen grows larger and bolder as he grows into the pack leader, though still is a pup when the other leader dies. Finally, after almost a year she finds herself in a village after leaving the pack finds her lost father alive. I recommend this book to all readers who like adventure, nonfiction, folftail, or a mix of all of these, this book is a book is a book of wonderfull description and a story worth reading.

Editorial Review:

"Miyax had been lost without food for many sleeps on the North Slope of Alaska. The barren slope stretches for three hundred miles from the Brooks Range to the Arctic Ocean, and for more than eight hundred miles from the Chukchi to the Beaufort Sea. Winds scream across it, and the view in every direction is exactly the same. Somewhere in this cosmos was Miyaz; and the very life in her body, its spark and warmth, depended upon these wolves for survival. And she was no so sure they would help."---from Julie fo the Wolves "When Miyax walks out onto the frozen Alaskan tundra, she hopes she is leaving problems at home far behind. Raised in the ancient Eskimo ways, Miyax knows how to take care of herself. But as bitter Arctic winds efface the surface of food, she begins to fear for her life, and turns to a pack of wild wolves for help. Amaroq, the leader of the pack, eventually accepts Miyax as one of his own defenseless cubs, protecting her from danger and saving portions of the daily kill for her. But as Miyax makes her way nearer to civilization, her life with the wolves, as well as all that she has come to learn about herself, are challenged as never before." (from back cover of case)

Editorial Review:

Miyax ha huido de su casa hace tres años. A sus trece años, no está dispuesta a convertirse en esposa, como les ocurre a otras niñas esquimales.
