As far as good, clean, books for kids 2-6, thre are none better than the Little Bear series.

Wonderful stories all children should read 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a set of books that is perfect for children to read. Innocent, heart warming, and charming, Little Bear is a series that your young child will love to read again and again. Also, if your child loves the Little Bear series as much as mine do, there are dvds of episodes from the tv show based on these books that they would love as well.

Every American Child Should Know These Books 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought these books for my 4 month old daughter. We've already read them (just before bedtime) more than once. I grew up with these books and they bring back great memories of when I was younger. These books are great for bedtime with the real little ones, and perfect starters when they first start to read on their own. Every child should be familiar with these books. They are classics.

Editorial Review:

To celebrate Little Bear's thirty-fifth anniversary, three paperback editions in the series—Little Bear, Father Bear Comes Home, and Little Bear's Visit—have been slipcased in a boxed gift set for a whole new generation of children.

Simply Adorable 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

A Kiss for Little Bear is a charming story about a young bear who draws a picture for is grandmother. Not surprisingly at all, this picture looks like one of the monsters from "Were the Wild Things Are." Little Bear has his friend Hen deliver the picture to Grandmother Bear. She is so delighted with the drawing that she sends Hen back to Little Bear with a kiss for him. The simple kiss gets passed on, friend to friend ("telephone style") until it finally gets to Little Bear. Little Bear ask Hen to take a kiss back to Grandmother Bear. But Hen refuses because "kisses get all mixed up." In the end, the girl and boy skunk get married, because they enjoyed the kissing. It is all very sweet and innocent.

My copy is 40 years old. I remember my mother reading this to me. It was then passed to my aunt to read to her children. When I was pregnant, my aunt gave it back to me. I love reading this enchanting story to my daughter. We giggle and trade kisses and have a great snuggle right before bed. This is another memory filled classic that I am truly thrilled to be able to pass on. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Grandmother likes Little Bear's picture so much she sends him a thank you kiss. "Will you take it to him, Hen?" she says. Hen passes the kiss to Frog who passes it to Cat who passes it to Little Skunk until Hen decides there is too much kissing -- and finally gives the kiss to the Little Bear.

Editorial Review:

This is the first I Can Read Book ever, and the first of five classic Little Bear books, expressly designed for beginning readers. Elsa Holmelund Minarik and Maurice Sendak teamed up to create these simple stories that are deeply comforting and lovingly playful. In one story, "Birthday Soup," Little Bear cannot find his mother and presumes she has forgotten his birthday. With the prospect of guests arriving and no cake in sight, he sets out to make birthday soup (all his friends like soup). Just as the gathering is sitting down for soup, Mother Bear shows up with a big, beautiful birthday cake. "I never did forget your birthday, and I never will," she says to her son as he hugs her leg. In "Little Bear Goes to the Moon," Little Bear declares that he will fly to the moon in his new space helmet. Mother Bear tells him to be back by lunch, and he is. The gentle, teasing repartee between Little Bear and his mother will delight young readers, and the spacious layout and large type will encourage them to keep on reading! (Ages 4 to 8)

charming beginning reader 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

These stories about Little Bear and his friend Emily are a charming introduction to the world of reading for beginners. Little Bear is a sweet child to his mother and father and a good friend to Duck, Hen, Owl and Cat. Minarik's simple narrative will be easy enough for early readers, and Sendak's illustrations will hold their attention. The four stories are: Little Bear and Emily, about the friends' meeting; Duck, Baby Sitter; The Party at Owl's House, in which Lucy falls from a tree; and "Your Friend, Little Bear", about Little Bear's coping when Emily goes away for the school year.

Another good Primer from Ms. Minarik - a review of "Little Bear's Friend" 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am amazed at the sort of complex storytelling that Ms. Minarik can accomplish with fairly simple words. [Why can't more modern authors accomplish the same?!?]

In this book, Little Bear finds two new friends, a little girl named Emily and her doll, Lucy. Together they have adventures which include going to a party, a broken arm for Lucy, and tragedy of tragedies... Emily's having to go away at the end of summer to attend school.

Five Stars. Wonderful storytelling. Good Read-aloud. I would estimate that this "I Can Read" book is on the first grade level. [Other sources list it as a second grade reader: 2.2 Level.]

Principally the difficulty lies not in the vocabulary but in the fact that there is quite a bit of dialog and more words per page than is found in Ms. Minarik's earlier stories.

Editorial Review:

Little Bear meets Emily, a human girl, and her doll.`Once again Little Bear proves himself to be as wistful and tender a little creature as exists in the child's library.' —K.

Not a very animated reading 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I wanted to love this!

I like the Little Bear books and I like Sigourney Weaver. I don't know that I like them together. She just doesn't convey the sweetness of the characters with her generally flat delivery.

I found the new age-y music distracting, too.

My daughter likes this, but I'd rather not be in the same room again while she listens to it. We've just listened to it twice, so I can't predict how well it will maintain her interest after repeated listenings (the Frances CD by Glynis Johns certainly has!). So, it's ok for Little Bear fans, but who knows how appealing this would be if she didn't already love the stories.

Editorial Review:

No one can resist Little Bear. This charming little fellow spreads happiness just by being himself. Now, for a new generation of children, here are the beloved stories of the adorable bear cub and his loving mother—and their friends Hen, Duck, and Cat.

This collection includes all five books: Little Bear, Father Bear Comes Home, Little Bear's Friend, Little Bear's Visit, and A Kiss for Little Bear.

This is a charming book that kids absolutely love! 5 out of 5 stars.
35 of 36 people found this review helpful.

My kids have been captivated by this book from the time they were barely old enough to look at the pictures. My oldest is almost five, and she still asks me to read this book, even though she has it memorized! It is a charming tale of Little Bear's visit to his grandparents' house. The love in this bear family is so heartwarming, and the sense of fun so nicely realized that adults will love it too. Maurice Sendak's illustrations, which have a 19th Century feel, are the perfect complement to this story. My only complaint is I can't find this book in hardback, and our paperback version is worn out! Two other books in this series - Little Bear and Little Bear's Friend are also great for kids from age 2 to around 7.

A Primer for 2nd Graders; Great Book for All - a review of "Little Bear's Visit" 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

There are four separate but related stories in this "I CAN READ Book" and they are all delightful. They flow from one to the other so that first story has Little Bear visiting his grandparents, while the second and third stories are tales that Little Bear's grandmother and then grandfather tell him. And the final story has Little Bear's parents coming to take him home after a wonderful, but tiring day of fun.

To parents and other caregivers this structure means is that we can read/or be read to big chunks or small.

Contents:

Grandmother and Grandfather Bear
Mother Bear's Robin
Goblin Story
Not Tired

Now my children like all these stories but there favorite is the one about the goblin who jumps out of his shoes. It never fails to get a howls of laughter from them.

Five Stars. Great artwork by Maurice Sendak. The stories are heart touching and humorous. The book is a Great Read-aloud and a more challenging reader for young children.

The reading level on this book is higher than some of the other Little Bear books and it is listed as 2.3 or suitable for a child reading at the second grade level. There is more vocabulary, more dialog, and more text per page.

good stories - slightly awkward format 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My 2 1/2 year old asks for these stories every night right now. The stories are mighty fine - if sort of retro - (mother bear is always baking cakes while father bear is off working) but in this case, I'm willing to overlook it because the tone is very sweet. This edition is a bit awkward - the pages are rather small and scrunched together. Still, a good buy.

We Love Little Bear 5 out of 5 stars.

My little 19 month-old daughter loves this book so much that I have had to tape some pages and the binding together. She wants us to read this book to her several times a day and she sometimes "reads" the book herself. The author does a great job in telling wonderful stories using words that kids can read easily.

A Classic Children's Book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I grew up reading and loving this book. My three children count this book as one of their favorites; they loved to insert themselves into the story. I wore out several copies with frequent readings. Now I am getting a copy for the next generation. They are also requesting frequent readings! This classic book is warm, affirming, and radiates love. The simple language tells an affirming story that resonates, depicting nurturing parents and a safe and accepting community. Sendak's simple illustrations are well matched to the text. I am dismayed to find that such a classic is becoming more difficult to find, as it is not as frequently reprinted as it used to be.

one that I have to hide 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

We have just about every Little Bear book and this one can be dangerous. I love all the others, and we read them often. This one however, we hide. My four yr old has gotten it into her head that if one bad thing happens, she is having a bad day. Th previous review tells you what happens, and how Little Bear is cheared up in the end. But it doesn't work for my daughter. So a little beware for those with kids who like to imitate their favorite characters. If it were not for her reaction to it, I would give it 5 stars, it is a good book that shows that even a bad day can be good because you have friends who love you. My daughter just ignores the last couple of pages though.

just like the show!! 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Little Bear is having a bad day. It starts when he gets out of bed and bumps his nose. Then he spills his milk, spills his paints, and loses his kite. He thinks that everything he does goes wrong. His friends remind him that he was still a good friend and it makes them happy to be with him. He decides that they are right. This story shows that no matter what happens you can count on friends and family to cheer you up.

This is just like the tv show. If you have seen that episode the book may bore you.

Editorial Review:

Little Bear's day isn't going well at all.

He spills his milk and he knocks over his paint -- what will happen next? It is going to take the help of some very good friends to help Little Bear feel better after his very bad day!
