Perfect book for little ones! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My son is a little over 1 1/2 years old. I bought him this book and it is his favorite with the hidden animals. He really enjoys making the animal sounds. The pictures are great and makes learning fun!!

Fun book! 5 out of 5 stars.

My son, who is 11 months old, got this book a couple of months ago. He loves to lift the flaps and hear me make the animal sounds. I like the sturdiness of the book...it has already been through the ringers and all the flaps are still attatched! A good book for babies learning animals and their sounds.

Great little book! 5 out of 5 stars.

My daughter (now 2 years old) has loved this book since she was 8 months old. Its great for travel because it is small and because it has a lot of pages for a board book. I had to open the flaps for her when she was little but now she loves to do it herself. We used this book to teach her the sounds the animals make and now she is learning to say the names of the animals. It has held up well considering the heavy use its had. At two, it is still a favorite book. I'm glad we bought it.

Editorial Review:

Illustrated in full color. Open the barn door and take a tour around the barnyard to find out just who's making all those wonderful animal sounds.

Another Cronin/Lewin Smash Hit! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

(Speaking of "smash," poor Duck, one of the most beloved Cronin characters ever, experiences one in this book; read it and see!) This is another hilariously fun read for pre-schoolers and parents/teachers alike, with a very satisfying, laugh-out-loud, typically-Doreen-Cronin twist at the end. Special Note: Keep your eyes on those meteorologist mice! They are the most accurate forecasters I've ever seen!
Long live sly, irreverent Duck, my hero! He builds the best ticket booth I have EVER seen! Don't miss this book.

Editorial Review:

It's time for the annual Corn Maze Festival.

The farm is bursting with activity.

Cluck
Whack!

The chickens build a fence around the cornfield.

Moo
Thwack!

The cows give the barn a fresh coat of paint.

Thump. Quack!

Duck builds the ticket booth for the hot-air balloon ride.

Everyone is excited. Well, Duck is not excited exactly. But he has a plan. As Farmer Brown designs the corn maze for the festival, Duck does some designing of his own. Guess who's in for a big surprise?

The always-creative, always-hilarious, always-champions-of-corn-mazes pair who brought you Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type; Giggle, Giggle, Quack; and Duck for President have planned a terrific event. Step right up, folks.

Editorial Review:

"Beep! Beep! Sheep in a jeep on a hill that's steep."
This story, much like the jeep, gathers momentum from page one. When five foolish sheep cram into one jeep, their high spirits and occasional lack of foresight (like forgetting to steer) combine to make a riotous, if ill-fated, road trip. Plummeting over a hill, tumbling into a mud puddle, yelping for help, these muttonheads just can't get their act together, much to the delight of young readers.

Nancy Shaw's Seussian rhymes are guaranteed to tickle every reader's funny bone, while providing a great little learning tool, as well. Who wouldn't want to learn how to read, after hearing lines like this: "Jeep goes splash! Jeep goes thud! Jeep goes deep in gooey mud!" Well-loved illustrator Margot Apple humorously captures the dopey expressions and preposterous predicaments of Shaw's sheep. More wild and woolly misadventures can be found in any of Shaw and Apple's other sheepish titles, including Sheep on a Ship and Sheep Take a Hike. (Ages 2 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

One of Boynton's real winners 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This one is great for babies and toddlers, and even slightly older kids can get into it. It's one of the ones I really wish existed as a non-board book!

The illustrations are cute, the text is simple and catchy - what more do you want?

PERFECTION! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

There is no greater compliment than when a child tries to recite the book BACK to the parents. Boynton has accomplished that with "Barnyard Dance!" Our oldest daughter, who is three, has Developmental Apraxia of Speech. Words do not come easily for her. BUT she adores this book and tries to "read" it to us all the time. Guaranteed to please your little one, I promise.

A must have for toddlers! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of the cutest books ever written for little ones! Great quality for tiny teeth and fingers! It's so eye-catching and colorful, they all LOVE this one!

Great rhythmic baby book. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If you read this book naturally, the inherent rhythms of the text turn it into a little song unto itself. You can tap your foot to it. Our baby girl dances to the *words* alone.

Get this book. It's brilliant.

Editorial Review:

The literacy rate in Farmer Brown's barn goes up considerably once his cows find an old typewriter and begin typing. To the harassed farmer's dismay, his communicative cows quickly become contentious:

Dear Farmer Brown,
The barn is very cold at night. We'd like some electric blankets.
Sincerely,
The Cows

When he refuses to comply with their demands, the cows take action. Farmer Brown finds another note on the barn door: "Sorry. We're closed. No milk today." Soon the striking cows and Farmer Brown are forced to reach a mutually agreeable compromise, with the help of an impartial party--the duck. But this poor, beleaguered farmer's "atypical" troubles are not over yet!

This hilarious tale will give young rebels-in-the-making a taste of the power of peaceful protest and the satisfaction of cooperative give and take. Witty watercolors by award-winning illustrator Betsy Lewin (Snake Alley Band, Araminta's Paint Box) will make this a favorite for one and all, even if words such as "ultimatum" and "neutral" throw the younger set. A House Favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am SO SICK of this book. I have to read it over and over and over again all day long. My daughter (17 months) will pull it from the bottom of a pile of books and bring it to me to read. On the final page she pats the baby's face and says "Baby. Baby." It's a very sweet little book and worth getting; your child will love it.

Charming Text, Okay Pictures 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is a favorite for my two pre-school-aged children. We read it year-round.

The rhymes of the tale are engaging. (I love the oft repeated line: "Someone, someone," says Mouse.)

My only quibble with the book is the art work. It is not to my taste, though I think that that is more a matter of personal preference than anything else.

Christmas Story for Little Ones 5 out of 5 stars.

A wonderful little board book for the little ones. Nice size for them to handle! The Christmas story from the viewpoint of the stable animals is special. The colors are eye catching. Highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

She longed for adventure.

So she left her home and ventured out into the wide world.

The pleasures and perils she met proved plentiful: marauding pirates on the majestic seas, a ferocious lion under the bright lights of the big top, a mysterious stranger in an exotic and bustling bazaar.

Yet in the face of such daunting danger, our heroine . . .

She was brave.

She was fearless.

She was feathered.

She was a chicken.

A not-so-chicken chicken.

Her name?

A Look Inside Louise: The Adventures of a Chicken (Click on Images to Enlarge)

Louise Meets Some Pirates Louise Meets a Fortune Teller

Questions for Kate DiCamillo

Amazon.com: Tell us about Louise--how is she so brave? What do you do when you’re feeling a little bit chicken?

Kate Dicamillo: When I think of Louise, the words that come to mind are insouciant and unflappable. I suppose that when all is said and done, she is brave. But she's also kind of, um, *clueless.* As for me, when I am feeling afraid, I squawk and flap my wings and run around in circles and then I go ahead and try to do the thing that I'm pretty sure I can't do.

Amazon.com: I know pirates don't keep very good records, but have you found any historical evidence of chickens adventuring with pirates?

Dicamillo: Yes, it's true, pirates don't keep great records. But there are several diaries of chickens that have survived through the ages and they paint a quite colorful (and detailed (and sometimes horrifiying)) picture of the many adventures that chickens have had with pirates. I refererred to these diaries when I was doing my research. They were written in chicken scratch; it was slow going.

Amazon.com: If Louise, Despereaux, and Mercy Watson went on an adventure together, what do you think would happen?

Dicamillo: Wow, there's a picture . . . let's see. I can envision Louise standing on Mercy's back and Despereaux perched on Louise's head. *Anything* could happen, I suppose. And would. But I'm sure that whatever happened, it would involve toast, hot air balloons, cluelessness and Despereaux ultimately saving the day.

Amazon.com: This is your first collaboration with Harry Bliss. Did you have his style in mind when you wrote the story, or did you join up with him afterward?

Dicamillo: When I wrote Louise, I didn't have a particular illustrator in mind. But the chicken (the whole world!) that Harry has brought to life in this book has delighted and humbled me. He's a genius.

Amazon.com: You've written award-winning books for kids of every age. Do you tell a different kind of story for each age, or do you think all kids find the same elements appealing?

Dicamillo: I don't think about what age the story is for or who or why. I just try to tell a story that makes me happy, one that makes me laugh, or cry; I try to tell a story that makes me glad to be here.

Kate DiCamillo is the acclaimed author of many books for young readers, including The Tale of Despereaux, winner of the Newbery Medal; Because of Winn-Dixie, a Newbery Honor Book; and The Tiger Rising, a National Book Award finalist. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Very Good Book 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is the story about the famous pig Wilbur, who was born tiny, but was saved by a little girl, Fern, and later saved by a spider named Charlotte.

Fern convinces her dad to let her take care of the tiny baby pig until he is big enough to go back into the barn. After he goes back into the barn, he still needs to be saved from being made into ham and bacon and sausage.

I loved the cozy barn life and the animals, and the relationship of Wilbur, Charlotte, Fern, Templeton, the sheep, and the geese.

I also loved the fair. I love fairs, so naturally, I loved this part of the book.

The first time I read this book was when I was thirteen. Back then, I really loved the book so much, and felt it was perfect and flawless. Since then, I saw bits and pieces of the movie when it came on tv (I'm not a tv or movie watcher).

I always knew I would eventually read the book again. I finally did. However, this time, I did not find it perfect and flawless. Although the storyline was still perfect and sweet, there were gross things in this book that did not bother me when I was thirteen. The older I get, the more sensitive I get. It's hard to believe I grew up in a farm/ranch situation and around "gross" things, but they didn't bother me back then; now I know I could never live on a farm again. That's why one star is missing; while I was reading this book, I couldn't eat or even think about eating - I'm that sensitive to "gross" things.

Editorial Review:

An affectionate, sometimes bashful pig named Wilbur befriends a spider named Charlotte, who lives in the rafters above his pen. A prancing, playful bloke, Wilbur is devastated when he learns of the destiny that befalls all those of porcine persuasion. Determined to save her friend, Charlotte spins a web that reads "Some Pig," convincing the farmer and surrounding community that Wilbur is no ordinary animal and should be saved. In this story of friendship, hardship, and the passing on into time, E.B. White reminds us to open our eyes to the wonder and miracle often found in the simplest of things.

perfect first book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My 6 month old absolutely loved this book!!! All we had to do was put it in front of him and he laughed like crazy. Beautiful pictures, and the perfect size for a baby to hold.

Baby Magic 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I don't know what it is about this book, but babies LOVE it. It's perfect for babies 5 months and up...easy to hold, easy to turn the pages, ok to gnaw on a little. The pictures are simple and clear. It's short on words, but inevitably you get into the animal sounds and talking about the animals and what they do. I include this with all baby shower gifts as a decoration to the top of the gift and my friends have all reported that their babies love this little gem.

Of all of the books my girls have loved to death, this is the only one I've actually gone out and bought again and again. It's a must have.

Engaging photos for little ones 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The photos in the book appear to be lifted directly from the classic "Little Duck" "Little Lamb" etc. stories. No story, just photos of animals and their names. My son loves looking at the animals and pointing to them when I say their names- it's a nice little book to take along in the car or diaper bag.

Editorial Review:

Photographed in full color. All the friendly animals on the farm--ducks, sheep, horses, and more--are presented and identified by name in lively, color photographs.

Everyone should read this 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This was my favorite book as a child and I still love the idea for the story--working hard to enjoy the fruits of your work, while those who do not contribute cannot expect to enjoy those same rewards. Last year I started a small project of giving this book to everyone I know who has small children. I even sent stacks to friends in other states who then gave them out to people they knew. I received some very kind thank you's and comments from people I did not know who appreciated the message of the book. I would recommend this book to both children and adults.

an old favorite 5 out of 5 stars.

Book arrived quickly, in new condition. The old-time favorite story with underlying moral....easy to read....many colorful illustrations that young ones like.

Editorial Review:

Beloved illustrator J. P. Miller’s graphic, colorful farm animals seem to jump right off the page—but they aren’t jumping to help the Little Red Hen plant her wheat! Young children will learn a valuable lesson about teamwork from this funny, favorite folktale.
