100 Questions and Answers about Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplantation 5 out of 5 stars.

I first came across this book in the library at the local Cancer center and after my husband and I had both read it, we decided to buy our own copy. It is highly recommended for anyone who is waiting for bone marrow transplant ( most are done by stem cell transplants now rather than using surgery.) For us it helped to clarify the procedures I will be going through, and it helped us to know what questions to ask my doctor ...and to understand her answers. There is so much to learn about what will be happening to the patient and it is well worth while arming yourself with the knowledge. I felt really empowered when I read this book. It is dealing with a very complex procedure, but it is able to explain it in terms a layman can understand. A must-read for patients and their caregivers alike.

Very basic - starter information 3 out of 5 stars.

100 was simply too many questions for the subject, perhaps 50 of the questions are really important to someone so ill they are considering a stem cell transplant
Otherwise, as with the other title I purchased from this series, the book is clear, easy to read and worth the nominal purchase price

Editorial Review:

This text is a patient-oriented guide to dealing with a bone marrow or stem cell transplant.

Editorial Review:

Bone and soft tissue sarcomas represent only about 2% of all malignancies; however, their treatment – with the goal of curing the patient while preserving the functionality of the affected body part – can, unlike other malignancies, only be successful with therapy concepts devised by interdisciplinary teams. This volume provides an extensive up-to-date overview of the specific diagnostics and current treatment standards of these rare entities, presenting the various limb-sparing modalities for patients with bone and soft tissue sarcomas with special regard to innovative reconstructive options. The evaluation of quality of life based on validated scores and the individual methods of coping with the illness through creative artistic projects are also acknowledged and integrated in the whole concept.

Editorial Review:

In 1982, Dr. Robert Patenaude was diagnosed with leukemia. This book is the moving, first-hand account of his experience. From the first shock of hearing the diagnosis and the anguish of his hospitalization, to chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, the author gives a painfully frank description of his experiences and shows the incredible survival instinct that helped him beat the disease.

Patenaude offers the reader a complete and scientific understanding of leukemia. Each chapter is written in layman's terms and thoroughly covers the scope of its topic. Patenaude leads the reader through the different classifications of leukemia, how they progress and how they are treated. Scientific explanation is complemented by Patenaude's ability to explain the how and why of diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.

  • Chapter 1 tells Dr. Patenaude's own experiences with his leukemia.
  • Chapter 2 discusses matters relating to the circulatory system, such as: the cell; blood; plasma; types of blood cells; bone marrow; blood clot formation; and hemopoietic, cardiorespiratory, central nervous, digestive and urinary systems.
  • Chapter 3 describes different diagnostic tests: blood test; bone marrow puncture and the bone biopsy; rachicentesis; X-ray examinations; nuclear medicine; and surgery and diagnosis.
  • Chapter 4 examines malignant blood diseases such as cancer and the different types of leukemia and congenital diseases of the blood system.
  • Chapter 5 looks at the treatment of blood diseases: chemotherapy; radiotherapy; surgery; bone marrow transplant; and immunotherapy and gene therapy.
  • Chapter 6 offers practical advice for patients coping with effects such as mouth-related problems; loss of appetite and nausea, gastrointestinal problems, weight gain, and fatigue and anxiety.

Both expert physician and patient, he answers all the questions frequently asked by leukemia sufferers about symptoms, phases, treatments and research. Surviving Leukemia is illustrated with tables and includes a glossary of 300 medical terms.

Surviving Leukemia is a unique, exceptional book designed specifically for people with blood diseases, their families and care givers.

From the Preface by Dr. E. Donnall Thomas, 1990 Nobel Prize winner in Medicine

In the current high-technology context of medicine, it is not surprising that patients and their families have difficulty understanding what is going on around them. Most books on blood diseases are very technical, since they are intended for nurses and doctors. Therefore, I am very happy that this book has been published. It is very easy to read and will help all patients and their families.

Editorial Review:

Cancer-related bone pain is experienced by patients with primary bone tumours such as myeloma and osteosarcoma, but is more commonly seen in patients with malignant tumours that have metastasised to bone. Bone pain is one of the most common and severe forms of pain associated with breast, prostate and lung cancer, yet little is known about the underlying mechanisms responsible for the pain. Cancer patients identify bone pain as the most disruptive cancer-related event in terms of their quality of life and daily functioning, and it is also associated with increased incidence of morbidity, depression, and anxiety. Part of the Oxford Pain Management Library, this volume summarises the latest evidence-based and practical information on the management of cancer-related bone pain. Chapters cover the pathophysiology and clinical features of bone pain, general principles of management and the use of opioids and other agents. It will be an invaluable reference for all health care professionals involved in the management of patients with bone pain from various disciplines including palliative care, anaesthetics, oncology and general practice.

Blood and Marrow Stem Cell Transplantation 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is an excellent resource for BMT nurses. We use it at our center for quick reference, and for training new BMT nurses. It covers diseases that are treated with transplantation, effects of transplant on each organ system, different conditioning regimens and specific side effects common to each, oncologic emergies, nursing interventions, quality of life issues, future trends in BMT, ethical questions, and much more. The 1997 edition differs most notably from the 1991 issue in that the pediatric chapter was omitted. The book is thorough and user friendly, with easy to read charts that organize information for quick reference. I use the book regularly for practice and for teaching, and plan to purchase each new edition that is released.

Editorial Review:

In the few years since the first edition, there have been immense changes in the number of patients receiving marrow transplants, in the number of institutions doing marrow transplants and in the number of scientific publications about marrow transplants and related fields. This new edition reflects these changes and incorporates the most current resources and information to this growing field.
