Editorial Review:

"[Dine’s] prose is a poet’s prose, often beautiful . . . [the book] reads like a skier on a slalom course full of jigs, jags, and quick jumps that capture a good amount of the fine surprises and sudden disasters in her life."—Norman Mailer

"Each piece or collage represents a thread of memories that veil and unveil other memories of loss, abuse, and fragmentation. Places in the Bone is an extraordinary work of literature written with grace, eloquence, and dignity—an important testimony of endurance as well as hope."—Marjorie Agosín, author of Poems for Josefina and recipient of the United Nations Leadership Award for Human Rights.

"I can't remember the last time I was so captured by a book's spell. Carol Dine brilliantly blends past and present events and emotions so that time becomes a collective experience, not a mere chronology. Although this beautiful memoir is full of sorrow, it is ultimately about the redemptive power of art and language."—Stephen McCauley, author of The Object of My Affection and True Enough

An Honest Account with a Sense of Humor 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

For those interested in a truly honest account of the transplant experience, as seen through the eyes of a devoted wife, this is a real page-turner. It describes the challenges and frustration they endure, her determination to make her husband a survivor so that he can see their baby grow up, and is sprinkled with a sense of humor that will make you laugh.

It doesn't sugar-coat the experience, but does help the reader to understand a lot of what people can expect to go through, hopefully preparing them to better deal with it themselves, if they need to.

Editorial Review:

Many fine books have been written by bone marrow or stem cell transplant survivors, but Across the Chasm: A Caregiver's Story offers a unique glimpse of the transplant experience - as seen through the eyes of a caregiver.

Twenty-seve-year-old Naomi Zikmund-Fisher was six months pregnant with her first child when she learned that her husband needed a bone marrow transplant. In the two years that followed, she grappled with the fear, exhaustion, anger, uncertainty, exhilaration and disappointments that are the core of the caregiver's experience.

Across the Chasm chronicles Zikmund-Fisher's day-to-day life, as she struggled to care for her husband, raise a young child, and maintain her sanity. With humor and candor, she offers a vivid picture of the emotions and challenges caregivers face.

Editorial Review:

We all hit a brick wall at some time in our lives. Starr's rose up inside her body in the form of a cancerous tumor lurking behind her chest wall and growing fast. With rare honesty, humor, and shine, Starr recounts her early terror and ultimate triumph as she scaled that wall and danced her jig on top.

Cancer has crept into most peoples lives one way or another, but we don't have to be a member of the tribe in order to resonate with Bone Marrow Boogie.

It is as much about love, family, and community, and about staying full present and alive during a mid-life crisis as it is a story of illness and recovery. It could have been divorce, remarriage, building a home, or even winning the lottery.

Big events call for a big response, and for Starr that included walking the talk and living to tell her story. She wrote because it satisfied her, it brought her into relationship with others, and because she thought it might make a difference to the rest of us. She got that right.

Editorial Review:

Memoirs from a deceased woman who battled one of the rarest forms of cancer - sarcoma - that resulted in nine surgeries in three years that included removal of her right leg, pelvis, and bone.

She shares her intimate feelings as well as treatment by several staff members who were not very nice! Having an excellent physician (and his staff) made her battle much easier.

The book discusses her survival: driving with the left leg, falling, undergoing chemotherapy and radiation; as well as what she did to live with the overwhelming pain.

Because most people only last six months (with the longest survival five years), she survived three years after diagnosis.

The book is written from notes of the deceased; but edited by the sister - also the caretaker. The author wanted to bring attention to sarcoma - so that more research is done on the subject. She was misdiagnosed for the first six months. By the time the correct diagnosis was made, the tumor weighed almost 10 lbs. It is a must-read.
