Fiber Menace & My Experience with Fiber 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I can truly say after reading "Fiber Menace" by Konstantin Monastyrsky, that a lot of my previous suspicions were confirmed. I'd already been eating pretty low carb and thereby low fiber for several years after having discovered I had a gluten intolerance that caused me to have back to back sinus infections. My doctor suggested avoiding all gluten for a month to see if it might help. Since then I have had no sinus infections whatsoever and have been able to lose some weight as well.

In the book the author states that "If you're healthy and your weight is normal, you may stick with your usual diet, but just cut down on foods high in fiber, such as bran, whole-wheat bread, cereals, or beans. That's
really all you need to change." It may only need to be more strict for people who already have severe digestive disorders.

My diet has of necessity been pretty strict with my gluten intolerance, probably more so than the author would necessarily recommend, but I've found it bears out most of what he says about the digestive system and gut healing when fiber (and a lot of carbs) are withdrawn from the diet for a long time. At one time I'd had a hiatyl hernia and major heartburn, but that healed and I experience no more heartburn. It's sad that in our society we automatically turn to prescription drugs to deal with these things when they are very much curable with diet.

In the last five months, while making a point of cutting down on fiber and excess water consumption, I have lost 31 pounds and my HDL cholesterol has also gone up somewhat, which puts it in the high range. My cardiac risk ratio has gone down significantly as my CRP test showing heart inflammation is also down quite a bit.

I look forward to seeing more from Konstantin Monastyrsky.

A Terrific Guide 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Finding this book was such a relief! It is difficult to find quality reading material that deals with this subject, especially in such a comforting, and easy-to-understand format. As a cancer survivor, and somebody who has been through many of the things described in this book, I would highly recommend it to everyone diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer. This book will walk you through the ordeal beginning at day one.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Lange’s comprehensive overview of cancer and treatment options offers detailed information using simple, concise language and a wide variety of color photos and drawings. Found this in a chemo room. I wanted one! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

2 1/2 yrs after an advanced colon cancer diagnosis, I'm still under chemo treatment and doing excellently.:) I've learned a ton! I recently found this book in the "chemo room." It seems to be "talkin' my language." I plan to buy one for myself and for others that I find myself encouraging along the way.

Editorial Review:

One of the greatest failures of public health practices and policy in America is the mismanagement of colon cancer. Despite the fact that colon cancer is 90 percent preventable through safe, accessible, cost-effective screening tests, this terrible disease remains the second leading cause of cancer death. Each year, more than 150,000 Americans will die -- an unnecessary and costly human tragedy.

Despite the scale of the colon cancer crisis, there are few up-to-date resources available for the newly diagnosed and their loving family and friends. Although this book was conceived as a primer for those dealing directly or indirectly with colon cancer, it is Dr. Feinberg's fervent hope that it will also increase awareness of the preventable nature of this devastating disease.

Be proactive and avoid this cancer 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

As a two time survivor of colorectal cancer I think this the best book I've read on how to avoid this cancer, what to do if diagnosed with it and how to cope with it. If I knew then what I know now I would have been proactive in getting physical exams with the screening tests described and certainly a colonoscopy at 50 years of age. Sooner if certain symptoms or hereditary factors were present.

If you or someone you know is diagnosed with colorectal cancer the book's comprehensive treatment of the various options available and how to obtain the best care is extremely valuable. The advice given by the author rings true based on my experiences.

The recovering cancer survivor will also find a unique and comprehensive overview of lifestyle changes, dietary recommendations as well as vitamin and chemical supplements available to help you lower the chance of recurrence, backing up these suggestions with empirical evidence. This has been helpful to me.

I suggest you buy this book, read it, give it to anyone approaching 50 whom you care for and certainly anyone currently battling the disease or it's aftermath.

Editorial Review:

The latest edition in the bestselling What Your Doctor May Not Tell You series explodes the myths and misconceptions about the third most common-and second most deadly-form of cancer in the United States. Over 50,000 men and women die from colorectal cancer each year-a particularly alarming statistic since it is also one of the most preventable and treatable cancers. In fact, it is estimated that over one-third of colorectal cancer deaths could have been avoided. Now, there's hope. This invaluable book contains important information on beating colorectal cancer, including the six biggest lifestyle threats, the three nutritional supplements anyone at risk should take, the optimal timeframe for screenings, the pros and cons of new detection tests, and how to effectively treat cancerous and pre-cancerous polyps with both traditional and alternative methods.

For a lay person, this is the perfect book. It's easy to read, well laid out, and helps me understand not only how to deal with current problems, but also how to prevent new ones. I've already told by three adult sons to buy it, and now I'm going to tell my brothers and sister and their kids.

Colorectal cancer develops slowly over a period of several years, undetected, usually as polyps. It is a preventable and treatable disease if caught in time, yet most know little about how to read its symptoms. Written for the layperson, this book covers all the uncomfortable questions and answers about the disease, from prevention and warning signs, to screening and diagnosis techniques, to making decisions and developing treatment plans. Also included are positive stories about life after cancer by 12 survivors.

Editorial Review:

Despite the efforts of Katie Couric to draw attention to the importance of colonoscopy screening for the detection of colon cancer, this cancer still does not receive the publicity devoted to breast, lung, and prostate cancer. Yet colorectal cancer is the third most common malignancy in the world and is the second leading cause of death from cancer next to lung cancer. As a result, colon cancer patients and their families often feel isolated and do not have the support and information networks available to those coping with more publicized illnesses. In this helpful and inspiring book, Eliza Wood Livingston provides a wealth of practical information about colon cancer while telling of her own heroic battle against this challenging disease and her survival after a bleak diagnosis. Designed to provide both vital information and emotional support, Livingston’s story will help anyone faced with the difficult ordeals of surgery, chemotherapy, colostomy, and the emotional roller coaster that patients often experience. At every stage of overcoming these trying hurdles, she tells readers what to expect, helps them to be their own advocates and ask the right questions of medical personnel, and effectively conveys the comforting message that they need never feel alone. A very reader-friendly text, with many useful sidebars highlighting important points, makes this accessible book easy to follow for average readers.

Livingston points out that while society seems more willing to recognize and openly discuss other life-threatening illnesses, colorectal cancer has a certain sense of shame and secrecy about it. Her personal story of courage and complete openness about her condition go a long way toward dispelling the fear and embarrassment often associated with colon cancer. Most important, she gives fellow patients and their families hope that they too can triumph over this serious disease.
