A Terrific Guide 5 out of 5 stars.

Finding this book was such a relief! It is difficult to find quality reading material that deals with this subject, especially in such a comforting, and easy-to-understand format. As a cancer survivor, and somebody who has been through many of the things described in this book, I would highly recommend it to everyone diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer. This book will walk you through the ordeal beginning at day one.

This book presents an essential overview of all aspects of colon cancer, from diagnosis to dealing with life after surgery and chemotherapy. This is the most comprehensive and current book on the topic of colon cancer that I've been able to find!

What to do if you get Colon Cancer: A Specialist's Guide 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Very helpful, straightforward guide to help one understand a potentially terrifying subject. Mainly, it helped me think of what I should be asking my doctors, and to understand both their answers and my options. A calming, useful resource. Highly recommend it to patients & family.

Editorial Review:

Autopsy reports show that about half the U.S. population over the age of 50 has colon polyps. Since about 95 percent of colon and rectal cancers grow from these polyps, it stands to reason that most Americans should worry at least a little bit about this disease. The bulk of this book is for people who've already been diagnosed with colon cancer, but some sections give advice to family members of cancer patients. The entire volume serves as an argument to get regular physical examinations.

Editorial Review:

This book reviews the scientific literature on this popular supplement explaining the importance and many benefits of this substance. DHA is short for docosahexaenoic acid, which one of the Omega-3 fatty acids found in cold water marine sources such as algae and fish such as salmon, sardines, haddock and tuna. Omega-3 fatty acids are an essential part of our daily diet, but deficiencies are prevalent as few individuals consume its food sources on a regular basis.

This important structural fatty acid forms 25% of the brain. Adequate dietary amounts are needed to support healthy brain and visual formation throughout all stages of life (beginning in the womb via the mother). DHA deficiencies are seen among individuals with memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, ADD and ADHD (adults and children), addiction disorders (especially alcoholism), aggression disorders and schizophrenia.

DHA is also involved in prostaglandin regulation and production which have hundreds of important functions in the body such as regulation of cholesterol and triglycerides, clotting, inflammation, metabolism, insulin, etc. This is why sufficient levels of DHA are important for individuals with coronary artery disease, inflammatory disorders such as arthritis, allergies, asthma, and psoriasis, diabetes, and also cancer. DHA is even necessary for proper weight regulation.

New and exciting research has demonstrated how DHA supplementation can help many individuals with these conditions and many others. The book discusses the benefits of supplementation, reviews food sources of DHA, and even offers a few of the authors favorite salmon recipes.

A Gift of Life for You, Your Family and Your Loved Ones 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Why Die of Colon Cancer? by Francis G. Mackey, M. D., describes, in laymen's' terms, how one can virtually "immunize" oneself and one's loved ones against colon cancer, the second-largest form of cancer-killer that claims 60,000 lives a year. As such, this book is literally a "gift of life." The key: getting a colonoscopy, a painless procedure, every 7 to 10 years (upon reaching 35 if there's a history of colon cancer in one's family, or other risk factors; or, starting at age 40-50 if not).

Written in an engaging, straightforward, highly readable, and conversational tone- and a quick read (the main body is 80 pages)-Why Die? is one of the most important books to read this year for every adult who is 30 and over.

Why Die of Colon Cancer? is important and timely because it debunks as inadequate, misleading, and a waste of time and money the four other unpleasant colon-cancer diagnostic procedures that still remain widely recommended: the digital rectal examination, the fecal occult blood test, the sigmoidoscopy, and the barium-enema x-ray. Read this book, and you'll be armed with all the facts you'll need to talk your doctor out of these hugely flawed and dreaded procedures! As one who has had an uncomfortable and useless sigmoidoscopy and a painless and reliable colonscopy, I guarantee this knowledge is worth the price of the book alone!

The book (a) describes the colonoscopy, the procedure you should ask -- no, insist-- of your doctor; (b) persuades you or a loved one to get a colonoscopy, if you or (s)he is reluctant to get it; and (c) relates first-hand testimony by a very knowledgeable, insightful and compassionate doctor-patient-author of the consequences of colon cancer and how to cope with them. It is an excellent resource for those who have been struck by this terrible disease, and includes 33 pages of a glossary and appendices with reviews of helpful books and web sites.

Executives, doctors, and regulators of the health care delivery and health insurance fields will find Why Die? invaluable. It makes the medical AND dollars-and-cents case for the broad adoption of colonscopy screening by all health maintenance and care organizations. It also makes a great hand-out to patients who need colonscopies but are resisting recommendations.

Dr. Mackey wanted to make sure his last act of medical careÐ this book, a gift of life for us allÐ was published before he died of colon cancer. Please accept his gift. No one need die of this disease as he did March 17, 2001.

Editorial Review:

Cancer of the colon is the second most common cause of cancer death among men and women in North America. However, almost nobody would die of this kind of cancer if they had appropriate colon examinations beginning at age 50.

Francis G. Mackey, M.D., a retired cardiologist who has been fighting his own battle with colon cancer for the last two years, has written Why Die of Colon Cancer ? (Rutledge Books, Inc., December 2000, $11.95) an authoritative, thoroughly accessible guide to the identification and management of this prevalent disease. Why Die of Colon Cancer? demystifies a terrifying diagnosis to empower patients in the decision-making process of their own treatment.

By sharing his intensely personal experience, Dr. Mackey opens an informative forum of discussion on the readily available preventative screening and the encouraging effectiveness of the most current therapeutic cancer technologies.

Editorial Review:

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) are complex diseases, which are subject to numerous medical researches. Despite increased knowledge on the pathophysiological process, many aspects remain rather unclear, especially concerning IBD. The aim of the researchers will be to prevent these disorders through early detection and intervention, thanks to genetic therapy. This book gathers current methods of treatment of these diseases and also presents the management of their complications. Authors finally intend to give a comprehensive overview of the newer therapies to bring the readers up to date.

Editorial Review:

For decades, while other cancers grabbed the headlines, colorectal cancer was quietly ignored. The lifetime risk of colorectal cancer in the general population is 2.5 to 5 percent. This means that twenty-five to fifty out of one thousand people will be stricken by this disease. Although data show that in America colorectal cancer incidence and mortality have been waning in recent decades, cancers of the colon and rectum still cause approximately 56,000 deaths annually. About 140,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

It is plainly evident that colon cancer constitutes a large portion of all new cancer cases, a little more than 10 percent. It is the fourth most frequent type.

For the lay reader wishing to know more about this disease that has become more prominent in public attention, Understanding Colon Cancer gives concise information and explanation. It covers fundamental knowledge about occurrence, carcinogenesis, genetics, diagnosis, staging, prognosis, and treatment, as well as forecasting the kinds of diagnostic tests and treatments that may be developed.

It reviews demographics, high-risk conditions, the sequence from bowel polyps to cancer, polyposis syndromes predisposing people to colorectal cancer, and the genetics of the disease. Discussed in full detail are the warning signs of the disease and the tests used for screening and diagnosis (fecal occult blood test, barium enema, sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy). The stages of the disease are examined, along with theories of how colon cancer spreads.

Two chapters focus on treatments, including surgery and chemotherapy. An entire chapter devoted to early detection and prevention discusses standard ap-proaches, as well as such new or emerging strategies as vitamins, drugs, and genetic screening.

What lies in the future for diagnostic testing and therapy? Understanding Colon Cancer concludes with discussion that forecasts the potential of genetic screening and treatment, of "virtual colonoscopy," and of new chemotherapeutic drugs, vaccines, and monoclonal antibodies.

Richard Adrouny has a private practice in Los Gatos, California, and serves as the director of medical oncology at the Community Hospital of Los Gatos-Saratoga. He is a clinical assistant professor of medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine and has been published in such periodicals as the New England Journal of Medicine, American Journal of Medicine, and Annals of Internal Medicine.

Editorial Review:

Differences in the diagnostic criteria for early cancer of the gastrointestinal tract between Japan and Western countries have been an interesting issue for some time, physicians in Japan being much more inclined to give a diagnosis of cancer than their European and North American counterparts. This book addresses those differences by contrasting the views of Eastern and Western endoscopists and pathologists on 24 cases presented in Part I. The following sections examine and discuss the Vienna consensus criteria, early cancer in Barrett’s esophagus, early detection of cancers, endoscopic treatments, the natural course of early cancer, and diagnostic methods and treatments for early cancer. These all deal with esophagus, stomach, and colorectal cancers. This book will be an indispensable and unique resource for all pathologists, endoscopists, and surgeons who are involved in managing gastrointestinal cancer.

Editorial Review:

This book overviews our current understanding of the biology of liver metastases, and reviews current methods of detection and diagnosis. Thereafter, the chapters offer objective and systematic reviews of each of the current major treatment modalities: surgical resection; destructive therapies; chemotherapy (systemic and regional); whether there is a role for radiotherapy; biological therapies (including hormone treatment antibodies and gene therapy); and lastly the decision making strategies that must be employed for successful multidisciplinary management. The book concludes with an overview of the health economics issues that must be addressed by all who practice in the field of treatment of liver metastases.

The book will be invaluable for surgeons in general surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, upper GI surgery, colorectal surgery, medical and clinical oncologists with an interest in liver tumours, and radiologists with an interest in liver disease.

Editorial Review:

To an outsider, Buddhist meditation can appear self-indulgent, time frittered away buttressing an intransigent ego. To an insider, such as Sandy Boucher, the dividends of meditation can come at unforeseen times, under extreme circumstances, such as facing down malignant cancer. Boucher, a counterculture patchwork of pursuits and causes, sews together a memoir of suffering to rival any proof of the Buddha's first noble truth. Although her surgery is a success, like so many other cancer victims Boucher's battle with chemotherapy causes the most damage. Having lost her home, her lover, and her health, Boucher collapses into the spiritual arms of her longtime meditation teacher Ruth Denison. Parallel to the drama of the cancer, we are treated to a minibiography of Denison, who proves to be an oasis of sanity in the desert of Boucher's life. Honest, occasionally compelling, and often unusual, Boucher's story contains glimmers of Buddhism's light amid many shadows of human frailty. --Brian Bruya
